You know what'll happen in this state which already has a marked shortage of doctors and nurses, right?  The legislature, executive branch, and bench come at them from one side.  Then you start getting women suing doctors for failure to provide necessary procedures.  Pretty soon, even general practicioners start leaving the state.  We're gonna be proper fucked in a decade or so.

Unfortunately, this needs to happen so the retarded right can see how bad their policies are for the people. Then again it wouldn't shock me to see them spin it on the Dems...

Much as I hate that word, I chuckled as I thought of that old joke, "What does the 'N' on the Cornhuskers football helmet stand for?  Knowledge."

What does the "R" after Paxton's name stand for?  Retarded.  Or in Ken's case as well, RightHypotropia.  But also, mainly retarded.

Oh, so it's just responsible policing of hospital policy?  Okay, remember that when their Covid protocols come up in the next election cycle.

It is not that either.  Not sure where you are going.  The Cox case can only be used as a precedent for women wanting abortions that refuse to follow the legal requirements to get an exception.  And SCOTX and the AG's office have said that avenue is closed.   And in that narrow window, the AG and SCOTX are correct.  We all agree the law sucks but it is standing law.

Paxton's sudden embrace of the minutiae of hospital policy is curious, if not disturbing.

And "where I'm going with this."???   I'll tell you.  On 2 January, I'm in a caravan of trucks (hint, hint---the logo is a horse) with a half dozen women to New Mexico to receive medical care.  We should have the funding in place for their lodging secured by end of this week, Christmas at the latest.  I'll deadhead back and they can get bus or train tickets back from same pool of funds.  Nobody's gonna stop our trucks, not in pro-business Texas.  When they've recovered and rested, they can travel back at their convenience.

I'm tempted to send photos of the trucks crossing the border to Paxton and Patrick as a "fuck you", but it would just draw unnecessary attention to the drivers who are trying to do a solid.

We already have laws that deal with medical reasonableness and things like experimental drugs and procedures.  These are not, at all, issues that the medical world hasn't dealt with before.

When the penalty is spending your life in prison, it is 100% something the medical world hasn't dealt with before.  That's the whole point.  It's what they want the law to do -- be so vague, with such a draconian downside, that it functions as a complete ban on ALL abortion, including procedures that are necessary to save the life of the pregnant woman.  This situation is not a glitch, or an unintended consequence.  It is 100% the intent and purpose -- it is terrorism by legislation.

Get used to it, we're gonna get a lot more of it.

My internet hyperbole (and frankly, that of Brisket's as well) aside, this may actually and objectively be one of those moments in history.  Where one person represents the struggle and suffering of thousands or millions even.  And their stories are usually crushed by the media or history or revisionism.  But once in a long while, one narrative emerges because it just "checks all the boxes."  Plus it's just coming at a weird time in the election cycles of the federal level and even too early for Texas.  This just feels strangely different for some reason.  I'm sure it'll be old and forgotten news by the Sugar Bowl, but there's something here that feels unique.  But during this holiday season, I have full faith and hope that everybody will fuck up everything as per usual.

Fascists don't give a fuck about whatever lever they're using to exert power against their "under" groups. It's historically consistent for fascists to find something and abuse and weaponize it to their own ends. And the second they're defeated on it, they'll move onto the next angle to keep trying to realize their preferred ends. You can't fucking take anything they say seriously - it wrongfoots any meaningful attempt to contain the damage they can do.

It’s a double edged sword, but the Republicans are incapable of letting this be forgotten. We’ll have lots of reminders/repeats as long as they have power to do so.

Well, what are you running---Class A or Class C?  Last time I checked with you heading west, you kept driving into the sunrise.  That's why we were worried.

We have a few drivers volunteering with space in the cab.  It's just a small gesture but every little bit helps.

We seem to be getting to the point of "do you want comfort or solutions".  I don't disagree with your post in spirit.  I have readily agreed on the intent of the statute and think it is repugnant.  I am hopeful the Zurawski case will help.  But if it doesn't then a different approach is going to be needed or else we all just join the choir and bitch.

There are dudes in here doing exactly what Smith did to Winston in 1984. Telling him that the laws in Oceania are not madness, are not insane, not contradictory because the "true citizen" knows 2+2=5. Say it Winston: "2+2=5" Say it!

Eventually, Winston says it: "2+2=5." Now dead inside, the torture is stopped and Winston is released, a "free man."

That's exactly what this abortion law, Paxton, Texas S. Ct (et al) are counting on. Complete Orwellian doublethink.

I have said from the begining that the Texas law is madness, contradictory, hypocritical, ghoulish etc.  I have said it perfectly summarizes the current Texas GOP.   I am suggesting ways to get the law repealed.

There is no way to get it repealed or changed. Because 1) it is EXACTLY how the GQP wants it, and 2) the Texas GQP could slaughter puppies on the Capitol steps daily and never lose a voter because Texans can’t vote for socialistcommunistlibrulhippiedemocrats. The GQP has license to be as cruel as you can imagine, and then double it, and that’s the entire fucking point. It’s not a byproduct or unintended consequence - it’s the essence of who they are.

So…all we CAN do is bitch, resist, work underground, and use this to hurt the GQP in national elections in areas where their support can be eroded.

This is 100% correct. I said basically the day after dobbs was leaked that no doctor will perform these procedures anymore.

It’s can be clear as fucking day that an exception applies, and doctors still won’t do it (without some sort of TRO, court clearance, etc.)

But why if it clearly qualifies as an exception?

Because the only GUARANTEED way to not get indicted for a 1st degree felony is to just not perform abortions.

Can’t imagine that many future OBGYN physicians would ever want to start a new practice in Texas. Of course, the GOP people in charge will never experience this problem because they’re not the ones on the lower end of the income scale who will face the doctor shortages.

many GOP voters will experience doctor shortages especially in rural areas.  And they will blame Obamacare.

They appear to be active in Texas.

Speaking of Texas, Paxton wants his revenge, and is showing that he has decided as a big fish in a small pond who will never get out of Texas, that he will try to remake it in his cock-eyed image.

Three court of criminal appeal judges up for reelection targeted by Ken Paxton’s political revenge machine

Paxton promised to go after the Republican judges over their 2021 ruling that struck down the attorney general’s ability to unilaterally prosecute voter fraud.

Quote

Attorney General Ken Paxton is turning up the heat in the Republican primary for Texas’ highest criminal court, where three judges are up for reelection.

Paxton has long made clear he would be going after the Republican judges over their 2021 ruling that struck down the attorney general’s ability to unilaterally prosecute voter fraud, saying that his office must get permission from local county prosecutors to take on such cases. The three judges up for reelection next year — Sharon Keller, Barbara Hervey and Michelle Slaughter — were all in the 8-1 majority.

Quote

Now, Paxton’s plan to unseat the judges is coming into focus. Primary challengers to all three judges filed Saturday, two days before the deadline. And in an announcement first shared with The Texas Tribune, Paxton’s allies have started a new political action committee, Texans for Responsible Judges, that will work to defeat the incumbents.

“Despite Texas’ reputation for conservative leadership, the Court of Criminal Appeals remains plagued by judges who’ve abandoned their conservative roots,” the PAC’s executive director, Sam Vrana, said in a statement. “Their decision to strip the Texas Attorney General of the power to prosecute voter fraud has left Texas undefended against liberal district attorneys.”

To be clear....y'all live in a hellstate where the nutbar extremist AG and your state GQP leadership, which runs literally EVERYTHING, thinks that SHARON FREAKING KELLER is too much of a "libtard" to stay in office.  Sharon.  Freaking.  Keller.  Look up her history.  Here's a fun episode:

Quote

On September 25, Keller refused to keep her clerk's office open an extra 20 minutes to receive a last-gasp pleading from the attorneys for condemned inmate Michael Richard. Richard's lawyers were having computer problems that prevented them from turning in their motion on time. The 49-year-old murderer was executed just hours after Keller locked the door.

Richard's pleading was a complicated procedural move that followed a U.S. Supreme Court decision earlier that morning that raised doubts about the constitutionality of lethal injection. That gave Richard's lawyers an opening to stay their client's execution until the Supreme Court revisited the issue.

But Keller's decision to close her court at 5 p.m.—a move that has since been blasted by even her Republican colleagues—violated the court's unwritten policies for handling executions. It also broke sharply from tradition. In Texas, it's not unusual for judges and clerks to take last-minute pleadings at their homes. On execution day, the courts don't have a strict closing time.

Keller's actions also defied the Supreme Court decision from that day, which has resulted in an unofficial nationwide moratorium on capital punishment. Maybe she didn't make an intentional end run around the highest court in the land, but that was the effect. To be more blunt, the effect was to kill a man months before his execution would have proceeded, assuming the Supreme Court would have allowed it at all. To date, Richard is the last U.S. inmate put to death.

And today....she's a pussy libtard who needs to go.  This fucking state, man.

You know this already, but all of this is because the Republican primary is the real election. Primary voters are going to pick the most conservative candidate, full stop. Ken Paxton coming out and saying someone isn't sufficiently conservative is a devastating attack in the context of a Republican primary.

But then so what in the general election? Of course the Democrat will point out that the Republican candidate is an unhinged reactionary, but your average Republican voter will just chalk that up to partisan mudslinging. In reality, Karen from the Woodlands and Billy Bob from Odessa know fuckall about the candidates for Court of Criminal Appeals (to be fair, I barely do either). They see an (R) and a (D) on the ballot, know that they're Republican voters, and mark the person with an (R).

The question is how far can the state Republican party go before people start to notice, care, and vote accordingly? I'm a pessimist at heart, so I tend to believe the line is pretty fucking far. My guess is that to the extent that people even pay attention, there's a lot of the same rationalization we saw with Trump - "listen, I don't necessarily agree with everything Ken Paxton does, but I could never vote for a Democrat that wants to flood our country with transgender illegal immigrants and allow abortion on demand at 39 weeks".

Bingo.

I was only pointing out how shitty it is that - in the only election that matters - we've got party leadership saying, about the meanest, batshittest people around.....they're not mean and batshit ENOUGH.  This is Hitler pitching a fit because Himmler is only exterminating the jews, and not also turning the skin of every victim into a custom-tailored suit, so Himmler has to go because he's a jew-lover.  Sharon Keller is being attacked because she's not mean and conservative enough.  Sharon. F'ing.  Keller.

Re: Brisket -- Yeah it's fucking stupid and crazy. The court ruled against Paxton because that's the only result the law dictates. You think the CCA is bad now, wait until Paxton's candidates get in and don't know what the fuck they're doing at ALL.

I'd add just as an aside --while Judge Hervey is conservative, she does a shit ton of work for actual innocence projects, along with pushing legit forensic science training and education for the judiciary and bar. A net positive for the criminal justice system.

I really can't wait for the finding out portion of the equation for Kenny. I'm really sure now that it must be just around the corner.....

What would be nice is if she or some of the others that Paxton is going after, would take the next few years and prepare to go after him in 2026.  They have the dirty laundry on him.  They have long track records.
