Jared Verse is the only one coming to mind at the moment. But he was the exception rather than the norm.

Drew Sanders? Or at least we thought he was a DE.

Sanders is a guy we may have won if he hit the portal today. I believe he hit before NIL was real, and at the least before Texas even had HWH functioning, which means we had zero infrastructure at all. He was skeptical of Texas.

that being said, 2 guys in what 3 years against every other ncaa team? I feel my point has been made. Feel free to go get Ovie again. Or you know, give a fuck about retaining him.

Did Oscar Giles recruit and develop better DEs than Bo Davis has so far at Texas? For all his reputation as a lazy recruiter, DE wasn't one of our weaknesses under him.

You're comparing Oscar Giles to Bo Davis....

First off Bo > Oscar

Second off you're comparing Giles to the wrong coach in this scenario

There were several edge players/DE who were open with the fact they didn’t feel like they were fully developed under Giles/Herman/Orlando. Probably not a coincidence the only P5 job Giles has ever held in his career is Texas.

And as was pointed out above, Bo Davis doesn’t coach the ends.

The swamp folk won a title in ‘19… Simmons was probably ~3 years old when we last competed for one… That doesn’t help our cause.

We came within a pubic hair of beating the swamp folk (and should have won the game) with Tom Herman as our coach.  That should help our cause.

Sorry, who was Ossai's recruiter and coach? If not OG, that guy was pretty good. We haven't had that kind of an EDGE player for a few years now. OG developed some good DTs here also.

Almost wins from four years ago in the second game of the season by a coaching staff that is no longer here are typically HUGE in recruiting.

What about an actual narrow win by a staff that's no longer in Baton Rouge? Not to ignore LSU's title, but that trophy obviously wasn't won by Kelly's staff. We can try to pick the right indicators all day long, but who knows which of them (other than NIL, presumably) outweigh others?

Somewhat comparable to NCs won by a completely different coaching staff when the recruit was 13.

I don't know if this comment was meant to be taken seriously, but I'd contend they aren't comparable at all. A recent national championship elevates LSU's esteem.

Playing that same team closely at home isn't going to be remembered by any recruit unless they happened to be at that game.

Wells on some 2024 targets

Spoiler

Inside Texas takes a closer look at the latest from a handful of 2024 defensive targets in Saturday’s recruiting intel.

Wardell Mack, CB, Marrero (La.) John Ehret

The 6-foot, 175-pound On3 four-star took official visits to Texas and Florida in June, but skipped his LSU unofficial in late July. That sounded alarms that another one of the Pelican State’s top prospects might be looking out-of-state.

Texas might be pushing the hardest at this stage, sources tell Inside Texas. UF’s Billy Napier and company are giving Mack the full-court press, but his relationships with Terry Josephand the UT staff is stronger than ever. Texas has prioritized Mack, even seeing him more than any other program in the spring.

There’s buzz a decision might come this month, before the beginning of his senior season. At this stage, it appears to be a Texas-Florida battle. Florida State is your sleeper here. I’m considering an RPM, btw.

Dominick McKinley, DL, Lafayette (La.) Acadiana

The 6-foot-5, 280-pound On3 Industry Ranking five-star might live in Louisiana, but it’s beginning to look like he might be out-of-state bound. Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M are all pushing their chips to the center of the table.

The family wants him to decide before the senior season, and that remains on the table. McKinley’s crew is looking hard at academics and team culture.

Bo Davis has put Texas in a tremendous spot for the product from Da Boot. To the point, the Horns could land McKinley and wrap up defensive line recruiting in 2024 that day.

Eli Bowen, CB, Denton (Texas) Guyer

The 5-foot-9, 180-pound On3 three-star cornerback dropped his top two schools on Friday; Texas and Oklahoma.

It’ll be a Red River Shootout for the metroplex area defensive back. Eli’s brother, Peyton Bowen, plays safety in Norman for the Sooners, so he has that natural attraction to the program.

From Texas standpoint, they’ve always held Bowen is high esteem, but with priorities on the table like Kobe Blackand Wardell Mack, I’m hearing the Horns might be looking elsewhere for the time being.

Inside Texas would pick OU at this stage in the recruitment

From LSU 247, staff/mod posts in a thread on Dominick McKinley.  These were in response to the Hank South CB, and quotes from his Mom, that he may decide Sep 1.

(Wish their DL coach the best with his health, of course. )

Net, they seem to think Texas is in a good position.
