Eric Nahlin: Texas' success of landing must-get recruits continues with Ryan Wingo

Quote

If this article title sounds familiar to you I wrote something very similar immediately after Colin Simmons committed to Texas on August 10th. That article stated, “For the sake of clarity, let’s consider a must-get to be a recruit that can’t be replaced in the cycle. If anyone fits that bill it’s Simmons, but there have been plenty more in Steve Sarkisian’s relatively short time in Austin.”

Indeed there have been and there will plenty more, but let’s talk about the latest example — On3 Industry Ranking five-star wide receiver Ryan Wingo. Like most five-star recruitments this one had plenty of twists and turns, especially considering the number of visits Wingo took to schools across the country.

On3 reflects Wingo took four visits to Texas A&M and Arkansas each, five to both Notre Dame and Tennessee, and eight to Missouri, which is just two hours from his hometown of St. Louis. One of Wingo’s older brothers attended Arkansas while another attended Missouri. In addition, both Georgia and Michigan received official visits. Texas received four documented visits, with his official visit in mid-June serving as Texas’ big bounce from challenger to leader.

In the end it was Missouri, buoyed by a strong year for the Tigers and star receiver Luther Burden, who took the lead from Texas. While apprehension and defeat set in for Texas fans of the sort who buckle at any negative news, the Texas staff never stopped driving home to Wingo what put Texas in a strong position over the Summer; specifically, Steve Sarkisian‘s offense and wide receiver Xavier Worthy‘s usage rate resonated with Wingo.

Another big element of the recruitment was Wingo’s relationship with new receivers coach Chris Jackson. Jackson, hired in January from the Jacksonville Jaguars, was playing from behind other recruiters but he hit a home run on his trip to St. Louis in May. In an effort to make up for lost time, Jackson spent all day at St. Louis University High and met with the school’s principal and teachers in an effort to get to know Wingo better.

With Missouri surging this Fall and the situation looking dire for Texas’ chances, Jackson made his way back to St. Louis to watch Wingo play on October 13th. Following the visit, information began to emerge that Wingo was closing in on a decision. That’s exactly when Texas stepped up its efforts and let him know how much of a must-get he was.

Adding Kobe black puts us at #5 class in the nation with 20 commits.

Who is number 6 you ask? That would be your redass ball-squeezing whoop gig em Texas A&M Aggies with 21 commits: a third of which are likely actively looking for any other school to match their NIL so they can defect.

I prefer this be reserved for codaxx since it’s well fucking warranted, but this one time I’ll allow it.

I'm pretty stunned that this is still a busy Mizzou board because the format hasn't changed in 20+ years. That said, there is some solid thread title hilarity over there right now:

Thread title: “we stopped recruiting him.”

We are currently 6 or 7 by average recruit rating
