Texas Recruiting Notes 2022 - Idiotic Slapfights Unrelated To 2022 Recruiting

(Bobby Burton) Friday: High School v Portal

Quote

Steve Sarkisian is trying to remake the Texas program and turn over its roster. And he clearly needs to. If nothing else, this week has driven that fact home. Sark needs to keep the good players and weed out the malcontents, all while attracting new players that fit both his schemes and the team culture he’s attempting to build. The job ahead looks difficult, but it’s far from impossible. We at Inside Texas expect the transfer portal to play a major role in Sark’s plans for the future. And that makes sense. After all, Texas already starts three transfers on defense, two of which Sarkisian brought in this past off-season.

**

Building through the portal is one thing. However, being forced to remake an entire roster from it is another. I think the portal, if relied on heavily, will quicker solutions but possibly mask long-term issues. What’s the biggest issue? Texas can’t go so heavy in the portal that they fail to address the need for elite high school talent that the staff can develop. Why do I say that? There are VERY few elite players in the portal. While some will point to Heisman front-runner Kenneth Walker at Michigan State as an example of a terrific portal talent, he’s the exception rather than the rule.

The majority of elite players, the real difference makers, will still be inked via traditional recruiting. That’s why this weekend, and really the next month until the mid-December signing period, will be key to the Horns’ future. Sark and his staff must connect on several of these remaining high school recruits. The portal is nice for a quick fix. It has changed college football, and will allow teams to find players at positions of need. But the high school route, that’s where the vast majority of the difference makers will be found.

**

Couple of related notes: Compared to Texas’ three, Kansas on Saturday night is expected to start nine transfers, four on offense and five on defense. And Kansas’ coach Lance Leiopold is the only other first-year coach in the Big 12 other than Sark.

I mean, I'm not expecting a Kenneth Walker III Heisman candidate in the portal.  But a Dillon Doyle or Siaki Ika or Tyrique Stevenson or Charleston Rambo or Henry T'oto'o would be nice.

We better…along with 3-4 all-conference OL grad transfers from the MAC or CUSA type conferences.

I laugh out loud when I see people say stuff like this. As if Texas is going to sweep the transfer portal and reshape our entire roster in one season. This is fan hope talking and not reality.

Yep. We will be extremely lucky and fortunate to get 3 or 4 starting caliber out of the portal. The rest will be Ovie Oghoufo/Devin Richardson types.

I remember when Rambo first entered the portal, he was poo poo'd by most of the board.

He is so much laughably better than any receiver we have other than Worthy and we showed little to no interest.

He committed to Miami one day after Sark was hired. Which was also one week after he officially went into the portal. Some coaches were in a better position to take advantage of the portal last year. He likely has Miami pencilled in when he announced. Sark doing nothing in it this year, would be a fireable offense.

Texas was not in a great position to take advantage of the portal because of how late Sark was hired after Urbs jacked us off and didn't finish.

Players will enter, coaches will get fired or get bigger jobs, more players will enter.

Texas gotta be aggressive and sell a vision and playing time.

Yeah I don't blame the coaches for not getting more from the portal last year. They got here late and more importantly they didn't fully know what they had on the roster.

Obviously those excuses no longer apply. Gotta crush it this offseason.

(Justin Wells) Humidor: A large visitor list for an important recruiting weekend

Quote

It’s an extremely important weekend in recruiting for Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns. This list mostly includes visitors, but there are a couple mentioned who weren’t scheduled to visit Austin this weekend.

QB Devin Brown, Corner Canyon (Draper, UT) (USC) – 2022 (OV): This recruitment has interesting written all over it. The odds Brown will sign with USC are slim. Texas, Ole Miss, Ohio State, and others have put in the time and have the four-star’s attention. The family likes Steve Sarkisian. Brown’s QB trainer, former Arizona State quarterback Rudy Carpenter, is a huge fan of Sark and what he can do with prospective signal-callers. There’s a small contingent that believe UT might quietly lead here. This weekend should tell us more.

RB Jamarion Miller, Legacy (Tyler, TX) (TEXAS) – 2022: This is the first time the Millers will see Austin since September. While he’s 30 yards shy of the all-time rushing record at Legacy, which he’ll attempt to break tonight against Garland, he’s ready to enroll early and get his college career started. Alabama is lurking and that should always give you pause, but this weekend is an opportunity to put a little more distance between the Horns and Crimson Tide. Texas has home field advantage over Alabama.

RB Rueben Owens, El Campo (El Campo, TX) – 2023: If you couldn’t tell, the state’s top tailback for 2023 really enjoys the recruiting process. He’ll be back in Austin on Saturday, and the hope is he’s accompanied by his mother, who has yet to travel with Owens to UT. Relationships remains strong, but Owens is the type to change like the weather.

WR Brenen Thompson, Spearman (Spearman, TX) (TEXAS) – 2022: If an injured foot wasn’t keeping him out of last week’s season finale, it wasn’t going to stop a trip to Texas either. If anything, he should wear his boot so he drives faster. The four-star commit and highest rated pledge for UT’s Class of 2022 will be back in his future home of DKR on Saturday.

WR Matthew Golden, Cain (Klein, TX) – 2022: Golden informed IT at 9:18am Friday that he will not be able to make ti to Texas Saturday. He only wants to go when his mother can make the trip with him. IT believes the playmaker will set foot on campus prior to making a decision in December.

WR Jordan Hudson, Garland (Garland, TX) (SMU) – 2022: IT stopped by Garland High practice Wednesday. There isn’t anything new to report on the SMU verbal. Texas remains after Hudson, but there isn’t a visit scheduled. If Hudson were to make a move, it wouldn’t likely be until after Garland’s season, or if Ra’Shaad Samples leaves SMU. Where Samples goes, should he leave, would impact Hudson’s recruitment from a Texas perspective.

OL Devon Campbell, Bowie (Arlington, TX) – 2022: (OV): Nobody has seen Texas more from the 2022 class. The 6-foot-3, 315-pound monster is finally using his official visit to Austin. Not to mention a weekend full of elite offensive line prospects, getting them all together a month before NSD seems ideal to help build consensus around the potential for early playing time. The chatter around the Bowie program earlier this week was Texas and Alabama are mentioned the most. That doesn’t mean Oklahoma doesn’t have a real shot. USC’s head coaching search helps everyone else under consideration. Campbell will very likely make a final official visit to Georgia. He will announce his decision at the Under Armour All-America Game January 2.

OL Kam Dewberry, Atascocita (Humble, TX) – 2022: (OV): Texas A&M is being pushed hard by family members. That’s not to say Texas doesn’t have a shot. The success of Kenyon Green at Texas A&M, and the Green family’s proximity to College Station has been discussed at length within Dewberry’s family. The Texas A&M push by some close is also telling. You don’t make the push if Dewberry is already leaning to staying close to home. Oklahoma was in a good spot prior to last weekend‘s visit to Texas A&M.

OL Kelvin Banks, Summer Creek (Humble, TX) (OREGON) – 2022: If the five-star offensive tackle wants to stay closer to home, Texas might be the spot. That’s a rather large “if” when discussing the 6-foot-5, 315-pound prospect. He remains solid to the Ducks after receiving his Under Armour jersey on Thursday. But Sarkisian and Flood aren’t giving up that easy. And Banks appears to be listening to the pitch in Austin more than College Station. If Banks ultimately flips, it will be due to needing to stay closer to home for family reasons. He should get some good face-time with Coach Flood, Coach Sark, and a few potential future line mates.

OL Neto Umeozulu, Allen (Allen, TX) – 2022 (OV): Of all the offensive line targets, this one is the most difficult to read. He’s traveled around the country, but it’s hard to pinpoint where each school places. Alabama wants him, so that’s good to know. As does Oklahoma, Texas A&M, USC and Texas. With his little brother and fellow UT offer, Zina Umeozulu joining him for this visit, that definitely helps the Horns.

OL Connor Robertson, Westlake (Austin, TX) (TEXAS) – 2022: Bash Brother No. 1 is coming. A staple of this class, and part of an incredible run at Westlake that could result in a 6A three-peat.

OL Cole Hutson, Frisco (Frisco, TX) (TEXAS) – 2022: Bash Brother No. 2 is coming. Playoff bound with his fellow Racoons, when Hutson and Connor get together, good things happen. Maybe the most mentally prepared pledge to enroll early next year.

OL Harris Sewell, Permian (Odessa, TX) – 2023: Texas is playing behind here, with OU and Notre Dame setting the pace. That’s the bad news. The good news is he really likes the UT staff and wants to return and learn more about the Longhorns’ plans. He has the small-town mentality, which this staff will have to overcome.

OL Isaiah Robinson, Lamar (Arlington, TX) – 2023: This guy just keeps growing. On the radar for awhile, the now 6-foot-7, 280-pound offensive tackle plays a premium position of need for the UT program. OU, Texas A&M, and Baylor are pushing for the four-star, but IT gets the sense Texas is a quiet leader today.

OL Gibson Pyle, Cain (Klein, TX) – 2024: Pyle’s father played offensive line at UTEP. He’s in tune with the recruiting process, and is following every school’s depth chart and situation that could present itself in his son’s recruitment.

DE David Hicks Jr, Allen (Allen, TX) – 2023: The state’s top-rated prospect in On3’s 2023 rankings, DJ Hicks has dude written all over him. OU, Alabama, and Texas A&M are making strides with the five-star. It’s Texas’ turn to make some hay.

DE Zina Umeozulu, Allen (Allen, TX) – 2024: The little brother of four-star Neto, Zina is a righteous dude in his own right. He holds double-digit offers including Texas, LSU, Alabama, OU, and Texas A&M. He’s a potential freak and should be treated as such.

EDGE Derrick Brown, Texas High (Texarkana, TX) (TEXAS) – 2022: Even though he couldn’t technically sign his LOI on Wednesday, Brown still went through the ceremony of inking with UT with family and friends on hand since he’ll be enrolling early in January. He’s Texas’ best recruiter right now.

EDGE Braylan Shelby, Friendswood (Friendswood, TX) – 2023: Another strong athlete Texas has viewed as a viable option that is probably an in-person spring evaluation.

EDGE Kam Bizor, Yates (Houston, TX) – 2023: At 6-foot-3, 240 pounds, and holding a Cal offer, Bizor is a unique prospect with interior defensive line potential.

LB Payton Pierce, Lovejoy (Lucas, TX) – 2024: The former Allen linebacker is killing it at Lovejoy this season and colleges are noticing. Arkansas, Virginia Tech, Missouri, and Tulsa are his early offers. Reminds of a younger Bumper Pool.

LB Dean Ford, Morton Ranch (Katy, TX) – 2024: Really interesting young prospect who looks like a spring evaluation type of prospect. Linebackers coach Jeff Choate will evaluate football IQ and instincts thoroughly at the position.

CB Denver Harris, North Shore (Galena Park, TX) – 2022: We’ll add a note later today as we seek to get the absolute latest. Our last intel had Denver and key family members making the trip to Austin.

CB Bravion Rogers, La Grange (La Grange, TX) – 2023: One of the better instate defensive back prospects for the 2023 cycle, Roy brings speed – 10.69 100m last spring – and tenacity to the position. His eight offers include Texas, TCU, Michigan, Tennessee, and Baylor. Rogers has been on TCU’s campus more than any other, and the Horned Frogs were the leader prior to the coaching change combined with Texas offer. Rogers was on campus for the Rice game earlier this season.

DB Larry Turner-Gooden, Bishop Alemany (Mission Hills, CA) – 2022: After taking an official to Austin last month, the 6-foot, 180-pound four-star has kept the Horns in his sights. Penn State, Arizona State, and Maryland are also in the hunt. Penn State might be the biggest threat to UT. Turner-Gooden says, “Just going there with family to see a game. I pretty much saw everything already.“ He’ll be at USC on December 10th. IT is paying attention to that hire with LT-G’s recruitment in mind. Though he doesn’t have a preference for the USC job, if the Trojans hire James Franklin, we’d bet he stays home. If not, UT is likely in the driver’s seat. He’s going to sign early and then announce at the All-American Game in San Antonio on January 8th.

DB Brian Hollins, Mansfield (Mansfield, TX) – 2023: The 5-foot-11, 170-pound corner has good film to go with his three early offers – Arkansas State, Illinois State, and ULM.

DB Aeryn Hampton, Daingerfield (Daingerfield, TX) – 2024: The latest offer from the sophomore class shows Texas is becoming more eager with its early instate evaluations. Hampton will have 25+ offers in 18 months, and the Horns were his fourth. He has never seen Austin so this is a treat for the 5-foot-10, 180-pound On3 four-star.

ATH Rodney Hall, Permian (Odessa, TX) – 2023: While he may play quarterback for MOJO, the 5-foot-11, 175-pound athlete is probably a defensive back at the next level. He’ll be riding with four-star teammate Harris Sewell for his first trip to Austin.

(Eric Nahlin) Humidor: Information on the Longhorn program heading into Kansas

Quote

Chris Beard’s hoops squad isn’t the only UT team taking on a traditional basketball power Saturday night. In Steve Sarkisian’s Thursday press conference he made the point most of the players are bought in. We put that statement to our sources with one estimating 90% of the team was bought in, with 10% being “just here.” We believe even Sarkisian himself would take umbrage with that high of a percentage of buy-in, but the point being is we haven’t heard Bo Davis’ tirade was emblematic of a total team-wide issue. The case could definitely be made the team lacks vocal leadership (we’ve been saying that) and even the player-driven accountability Davis was attempting to deliver.

Now, we will say we’ve heard from different people things might be worse than people realize — namely entitlement and players tuning out the coaches — but we haven’t heard that from our best sources. We’re mentioning it here because we won’t pretend to know the full story and if this team continues to crater down the final third of the season it would lend more credence to that notion. That issue, if it is true, likely stems directly from how the season transpired. We even saw it in 2017 after the team suffered a long stretch of heartbreaking losses.

In short, at least as of now, this seems more like a team on a four game losing streak than a program in turmoil. Two things are for sure: Texas needs to win these last three games, and then Sarkisian needs to make a full-on assault to improve culture through player turnover and looking at every aspect of his managing process to see if there are areas that need to be tweaked or outright altered. Funny enough, just settling the quarterback position would go a long way, because winning is a panacea.

*****

Speaking of quarterbacks, we’ve received predictions for both Casey Thompson and Hudson Card starting. We lean towards Thompson getting the nod based on snap allocation this week, but, as Sark said on Thursday, both will play. Our sources says Casey’s thumb is fine. Sark said as much after the Iowa State game but then changed his tune on Monday. We don’t believe the thumb is a current issue.

We’ll go a bit more into running back detail right before kick-off. There’s a lot of uncertainty right now. Regardless, we do believe Jonathon Brooks will receive a fair amount of touches. He’s improved from when we saw him earlier in the year, and he already looked pretty good then. Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown has been bitten by the injury bug, but where as some others were in green non-contact jerseys this week, he was full-go on Thursday. We expect him to play. Jaylan Ford had increased reps this week and will play a lot. Alfred Collins should be good to go.

*****

Considering everything going on, it was a focused week of practice. There was more teaching than usual as coaches slowed things down due to so many players missing time. At one point this week over 10 guys were out for various reasons. Beyond running back, another position group was hit particularly hard.

*****

As of last night, the videographer hasn’t officially been kicked off the team but IT has heard he was voted off by the team leadership group.

It's the fact that we are 2/3rds of the way into the season and noone can name the starter. Ewers could settle the debate.. maybe. But hell, some of his decisions over the last year have me holding my breath a bit if he does come here.

This is just dumb. His family is one of the wealthiest families that I know. They travel all over the place. There is no small-town mentality whatsoever.
