It really is.  He went full Jose Mourinho and tried to win a game 1-0 after scoring in the 2nd minute.  Grealish came on way too late.  And he put three young guys into the biggest pressure PKs of their lives without even getting much action first.

Southgate strikes me as having a little Tom Herman in him, as in he wants to show everyone that he knows better than what consensus standard coaching dictates because he's just so much smarter than everyone else.

Your second paragraph is I think spot on, and the first too

Sorry Captain Ron for being bitchy. Just a raw nerve hoping for glory for Saka, and not just that final PK. He’s such a great kid. Frustrating to watch it all go down the drain due to poor management.

Oh well, back to watching Atlanta United fuck it all up and waiting for PL 21-22.

But for real, nothing is more lame than a championship game decided by penalties.

actually, i would say a game decided by a controversial flop in the box in regular time (ie England Danes) but yeah this is kind of high drama and bad mechanics to end it, agreed

Two cold subs and a teenager take PKs before Grealish. Yup. Well done Gerth.

yeah that is confusing man. i never understood putting in cold specialists in big pressure situations. did they not sub in the 2 PK specialists with some time left in the first 120'?

The best team won.

Fortune favors the bold as they say, and after that first Luke Shaw goal, one team was clearly the bold.  Expecting your team to defend for 80 plus minutes and not give up an equalizer is a bit much. England's strength is in it's young attacking talent. They would be wise to develop a playing style that takes advantage of that. All they have to do is look at the team that beat them today that remade their style and is on average a much older team.

On the penalties, professionals have to be professionals. I get the selections can be head scratching, but some of these guys are clearly trying to overthink how to take a penalty. Hard shot, upper corner. That's it. The jumpshots and pausing etc, is more of a benefit to the keeper. The worthy criticism is not bringing in Rashford and Sancho earlier and maybe finding another spot for Saka in the lineup, but ultimately the fault is theirs not the manager.

Yup, the racist shit will be off the roof, but those guys have to ignore it and get on with it. Mercifully for them, the wait won't be long until they have to play in another major tournament

politics and soccer (especially international soccer) are inextricably linked.

Sure.  So if England had won, pro-Brexit folks would be legit in linking the game with politics?  I'm just not a fan of politics mixing with sports regardless of anything else.

Yeah, you take away the Russian portion, you're talking about a continent smaller than Australia that somehow divided itself up into about 50 countries.  It's beyond incredibly heated in Europe after you strip away the bullshit illusion of the E.U.  It's what happens when thousands of years of warfare percolate up to a single football match.  Shit talking and drunken politics are rule the day.  I can't believe how many American football fans don't understand this.  Every Euro or WC, a bunch of guys in jerseys around the U.S. remind me of Paul Giamatti in 'Too Big to Fail' and whimper out, "I don't understand why there has to be so much hostility."  Having said that, it was a great fucking tournament and fun to watch alongside La Copa.  Gold Cup should be decent as well.

If we can't make fun of England's football, or their politics, can we at least make fun of their royals?

I think of Anthony Jeselnick's bit about his mom and her obsession about Lady Diana.  Her whole house was plastered with photographs of the Princess.  From.......right after the accident.

Sounds like soccer outside of MLS is not the sport for you.

Perhaps I enjoy the beauty of the game without the insertion of personal politics.  And, yes, I get historical grievances in Europe (and New Zealand I guess), but Taika Waititi knew exactly what he was doing with his tweet.

The politics in the Euro is kind of what makes it a lot more fun.

Hell, France is a much better team than England, but they see themselves as rivals because of shit like the 100 years wars from the 12th and 13th century and the whole English kings claiming to be kings of France.  It is fucking fun.

Um, 1998 and 2018 Wold Cup Champs and 2006 runner up as well as 1984 and 2000 Euro champs as well as 2016 runner up compared to England with one WC champ from 1966 and Euro runner up this year. At least historically, France is the better team. France also didn’t get to play all but one match in this Euro at home…

I went in slightly rooting for Italy just because Engerland just seemed a tad uppity this tourney.  The "Bring it home" was offputting.  Ended up watching with an English family a d they were super cool, so I kind of switched to England.

Oh well.  I still love "What We Do in the Shadows".
