I think it's the tipping point.  February Freeze, Covid BS, and now this.

Eventually people will realize that all they need to do to have a normal life is not vote for scumbags.  Now, whether than can actually vote or not is the another issue.

It seems it's just being accepted as the norm.

Nope

Yep.

Actually policy and outcomes don't matter.  Can't vote for anything but an (R), because Socialism and the Dems want black antifa illegal aliens to live in your house and rape you.  Boom, done.

The Thujone cartoons are real.  Texans would rather eat leaves out of their hats next to their collapsed homes than vote for another political party that might...oh, I don't know, try to actually govern and run a functioning state.

I think the abortion law is an overreach that might be the final straw for a lot of people, especially women.

I think there’s a ton of moderate suburban republican women that don’t care because there’s no way THEIR daughters would ever be in a situation to need an abortion because they are good Christian girls.

THeres also probably a ton of “good Christian girls” that have had abortions that didn’t tell mommy and daddy.

Is bongo playing Matthew the only shot at taking down a GOP Governor? Of course, I’m assuming he’s a Democrat.

I have seen nothing but hypothetical polling to show he’d be competitive.  He’s taken no public stances and there’s been plenty of opportunities to start building a platform against Abbott. He’s not done that.

And they can afford to go to another state to have it done.

no one in bible study ever needs to know.

One of many reasons Christians are shit.

He's made statements that he is not Democrat or Republican.... my guess he would decide what he needed to run as to give him best shot to win if he decides.

Here are his statements on his affliation:

Is McConaughey a Republican or a Democrat?
He says he is neither. McConaughey describes his party affiliation as "aggressively centric."

"Look, I’m a 'Meet You in the Middle' man. When I say 'aggressively centric,' that sometimes gets parceled over there with 'Oh, that’s a shade of grey, a compromise,' " he told the Statesman.

In the past, McConaughey has spoken out against political extremes.

"You need liberals. What I don’t think we need is the illiberals, and what I don’t think that some liberals see is that they’re often being cannibalized by the illiberals," he said on "Good Morning Britain" in December.

“Now, you know, there are extremes on both sides that I think are unfair — that I don’t think are the right place to be," he continued. "The extreme left and the extreme right completely illegitimize the other side … or they exaggerate that side’s stance into an irrational state that makes no sense."

All comes down to who runs. You can't trot out another candidate like Lupe Valdez and expect to beat Abbot. While seemly a fine person she didn't have have the charisma or political polish to handle a state wide race.  Personally I'm hoping McConaughey does step up and run.

Ideally the Dems will put up a moderate woman from the private sector with proven executive leadership success.

Any ideas?

They could try that, or they could try to win by putting up the typical old white dude. I don’t like it, but if you’re going to compete in this fucked up state it has to be male, pale and stale.

That's a fun spin on the Male, Pale and Yale original idiom-- did that get traction to be more "Joe Biden Six Pack" or maybe because we are in the South?

I'd vote for MM.

After a legislative session where people supposedly wanted property tax relief and winterizing of the power plants and instead got Dan Patrick’s weird shit, I’d imagine that most Texans are unhappy with the state government.

we probably needed the ice storm to hit during an election year for it to have an impact. Most people will have forgotten it by the time they vote.

Among Trumpkins.  Who are not the majority of voters, and may not even be the majority of the GOP (but they are loud enough to drown out the others).

This.  Need an Ann Richards type.

And the Dems have to assume that Abbott will be too much of a pussy to debate.

If it happens again, I’m still skeptical. All some people ever want to do is own the libs.

Those people who care only about owning the libs are not the majority.

A shitload of us here are former Republicans.  Some of us left years ago, some of us were still Republicans up through Shaggy, and then Trump happened.

The problem is the Dems don't know how to capitalize on a lot of moderates not wanting to associate with the batshittery that is driving the GOP.  If you don't give them a viable option, they'll just pull that (R) lever.

I have faith that ERCOT will find a way to remind everybody of last February, but I also have faith that the Dems will fuck up their candidate selection, canceling that out.

I think Dems believe (and not without good reason) that support from the GOP refugees is a half mile wide and an inch deep. They observe with some astonishment how Republicans can misbehave with an impunity that is rarely extended to Democrats. How else can  the migration from Obama to Trump be explained?

Well that’s about to change.

MM could run as a moderate/conservative dem and win. Does he want to? I have no idea.

We might need someone with a little more fire in the belly to lead the effort to unfuck Texas than a moderate conservative might have.

What the state needs now is a moderate conservative dem who actually gives one flying fuck about the state. That ain’t a coming from the GQP we know that. Abbott is deeply unpopular. It’s there for the taking.

Abortion is now illegal in Texas.

Joe shithead can sue anyone who has anything to do with an abortion in Texas for money.

That same asshole can walk around the streets of Dallas, Houston, etc with an AK and nobody can do anything about it. Even the cops.

The power grid failed in February because the temperature got below freezing and hundreds of people died and everyone else lived in temporary squalor for a week.

The Capitol got ransacked by thugs and almost overthrew democracy.

All of that happened since the last election less than a year ago and some of y’all think nothing has changed.

That might be what the state votes for but our needs far exceed the moderate conservatism MM or anybody of his ilk might provide, imo.

The Democrats need to put up someone that will run on legalizing marijuana, not taking guns and getting rid of this abortion law. Is that possible? Can the democrats leave guns alone or the idea of taking guns alone?

Can Republicans leave abortion alone?  Or the border?

I think all of that and more has made a shitload of people uncomfortable with where the GOP/Texas/etc. is headed.

I forgot who posted this, so apologies, but it's what the GOP in Texas is turning into in the minds of a lot of people, including moderates.

You are leaving out one important thing.  Over the last 4-5 months, Abbott has reversed course in the middle of a fucking pandemic and has been trying to fuck with school districts and parents in Texas trying to stay masked up and do virtual when things got bad, and Paxton has gleefully been there beside him, throwing gasoline around everywhere.

There's over 5 million school kids in Texas, and almost every one of the millions of their parents, with the exception of the weird home-schoolers and anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers, want their kids to stay in school, not catch it, and not have to quarantine.

They want their sports and other extracurricular activities to go on, particularly high school parents and alumni.

Fucking Abbott and Paxton tried to wage a full-on war against those parents with stopping local districts from mandating masks, and those parents aren't forgetting it.

And Abbott and Paxton did it very visibly in the public arena, and they wanted you to know that they were the ones pushing against it.

They wanted full credit for this as Delta went fucking haywire and filled up our hospitals, including our children's hospitals.  They gave no fucks when ICUs filled up.

What they did was not leadership, it was not normal, it was not the actions of somebody who gave a shit about their kids, and everybody saw it.

When have Democrats done anything other than leave guns alone? Seriously.
