Yep.  Ubiquity of firearms is a broad problem.  Anyone, anytime can get any firearm they want, about as easily as ordering a #3 combo meal at the Wendy's drive-thru.  That's fucked in the head.

But keep whistling past the graveyard.  It's a super-genius path that will end GREAT for all of us gun owners.  Check out the pulse of this country on firearms: it has gotten much, much more hostile to gun rights and ownership in general, and that's due to the 1-2 punch of 1) firearms being used in high-profile crimes against innocents (read: not just drug deals -- it's easy to avoid getting shot in a drug deal, just don't engage in them....it's a lot harder to avoid getting shot when you go to school or Wal-Mart), and 2) the gun nut crown repeatedly telling the rest of America "get fucked.....wait, not just get 'get fucked,' but on top of that, we're going to pass laws making guns EASIER to get, and EASIER to carry everywhere!  Because fuck you!"

If you're too dumb to see how that approach will eventually end in the repeal of the 2nd amendment and a gutting of private ownership of firearms as we know it, I can't help you.  I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Your response ignored your unsupported allegations that this is a Republican issue.

So....I just made up all of the legislation making it easier to get and carry guns....and all of the legislative action blocking any measures to make it harder to get a firearm...and the GQP SCOTUS decision in Bruen?  I mean, I admit that I have an active imagination (there's this scenario involving my wife and one of her friends, and a hot tub, and we all have just the right amount to drink.....), but I'm PRETTY sure I didn't imagine all of those things.

Dude.  There is one party that is "no to any gun control or restrictions and in fact, let's make guns EASIER to get and carry, and actually make them talismans of toughness and manhood!".....and, ummm, it's that one.

no, in all shootings it's the guns.  it's not called gun violence because of knives or cars.

Or maybe....just maybe....it could have been harder to obtain.

The fact that we have REPUBLICANS who are actively making it harder to access a video of hot lesbian porn action than it is to buy a handgun....yeah, that's kind of our exact point.

You know better than this.  Legitimate gun purchases require background checks.  Criminals don't follow laws.

You just felt like walking right into this one, didn't you?  Why don't we take a look at what the NC GQP legislature just fucking did:

Quote

RALEIGH, N.C. (WGHP) — North Carolina will no longer require anyone buying or selling a handgun to get a pistol purchase permit from their local sheriff’s office, eliminating the sole background check required for private sales.

The North Carolina Senate passed SB 41, the “Guarantee 2nd Amendment Freedom and Protections” bill, on Feb. 16, and the state House passed the bill on March 15, sending it to the governor’s desk. Gov. Roy Cooper issued a veto on March 24 in an attempt to strike down the bill. The state Senate voted to override Cooper’s veto on Tuesday, and the state House followed on Wednesday.

Until now, anyone who wanted to sell, buy or transfer a pistol in North Carolina was required to either have a concealed carry permit or get a pistol purchase permit from the sheriff’s office in the home county of the person buying or receiving the gun, per General Statute 14-402. Pistol purchase permit applications required the payment of a $5 application fee.

Now, with the passing of this bill, the state no longer requires a permit to sell, buy or transfer a handgun.

The date on that action?  March 31, 2023.

The GQP made it EASIER to obtain a handgun, eliminating the SOLE background check on private sales.  We don't yet know where this shooter got his gun (it hasn't been recovered).  But it's plain as day: if you want to obtain a handgun quickly in NC, without ANYONE knowing about it, the GQP legislature took action to make that EASIER.

FOOTNOTE: not that it matters.  After the SCOTUS decision in Bruen, if someone had challenged the old law requiring permits, it would have been struck down, because Bruen literally means that any gun law passed after 1791 (or that doesn't reflect a law that already existed in 1791) is unconstitutional.

Private sales?  Big whoop.  What percentage of total gun transfers is that?

I bought my lever .308 Savage 99 that I hunt with from my BIL's 30 years ago after my FIL died, and to use your words "without ANYONE knowing about it" -- do you really want to make a big issue out of stuff like that?

P.S. -- Thinking about it, most all of my current firearms (10-12?) have been inherited or gifted.  My experiences with the current background check scheme relate to a youth 20 gauge and a .223 that I bought for my son as he was growing up.

Yes.  I do (and I've both bought and sold firearms in private sales).  And I want to make a big deal out of a hundred other things.

You can't get past the fact that not only is every measure that could even slightly limit the ability of guns being handed out like party favors completely opposed and blocked by the GQP, IN FACT, they have been passing laws left and right making it FUCKING EASIER TO OBTAIN AND CARRY A FIREARM FUCKING EVERYWHERE.

No, there's nothing we could do to prevent all gun deaths.  But the current GQP strategy of "not only do nothing, but undo even the few things we've already done" has the exact opposite result.

Here's an easy one: it is easier for an 18 year old to get an AR-15 for the purpose of shooting up a school in Uvalde than it is for that same person to buy a fucking BEER.  That....is insanity.

And all gun purchases are legitimate, then?  Guns and drugs are moved around Texas and surrounding states using two methods.  Neither of which are criminals.  They use clean citizens and law enforcement.  this black market of just thugs and drug dealers buying guns from one another mythology is fascinating.  10-20% of legit product from gun manufacturers are immediately moved off the supply chain and put into the hands of a robust distribution network of law enforcement officials who safely transport them to far away states.  They are then turned over to "thug arms dealers" who can then move them locally for cash.  If there were people of color buying up dozens of assault rifles, we'd probably hear about it.  You cut out the middle man, manufacturers get the weapons as "overages" to LEOs who move the products under their own protection to points distant.  From there, it enters what appears to most Americans as the "drug/criminal" network.  It doesn't just land on a truck and then a gun dealer with some strawman buyer.  That happens, but not en masse.

State police and large muni agencies.  We keep the nation up to its neck in guns and drugs.  It's not driven around by Juan in an old Odyssey van with "IN TOW" written on the back in soap.  Apparently that's kind of a give away.  The machine feeds itself.  Believe me.

i also read your subsequent posts. they do not get much better.

comparing a (legally bought, in most cases) ar-15 to a knife, a car, a hammer, a fucking rock is serious self-delusion zone. or flat out dishonest. i haven't figured which.

To be fair to global religions, a number of civilizations found homicide really uncool for millennia before the Ten Commandments.  They just didn't have government mandated posters to codify it for school shootings.  They also didn't have poster-tacky for said posters.  Shit took a really long time to invent, believe it or not.

Let's take your premise at face value.  Is it your position that every law must be 100% effective to be worthy of passage?

Obviously not.  Murder has been adjudged as illegal for a long time.  Yet it still happens, notwithstanding the legal (and moral) constraints against it.

The non-murderers have a constitutional right to defend themselves from criminals (who assuredly will be armed regardless of what sort of law is invoked).

So then, it's purely coincidental that other countries don't have nearly as much gun violence as us, I suppose. Their murderers just opt not to use guns for purely personal reasons. That about the gist of it?

So now we are letting the grieving victims decide what’s best for public consumption?  This isn’t gory pics, it’s a document that could be used to learn more about the asshole that did it, and potentially why they did it.  I’m pretty sure one could glean some information from that.  OR, this particular asshole checks ALOT of the boxes that people don’t want to discuss.  Im sure that’s not it.

And clearly no other mass shooting should be discussed until fattyflattie is satisfied with the coverage of the Nashville murders. It's so very reasonable and just the way the world should work.

BTW, I don't care if they find Nancy Pelosi is responsible. I don't have unlimited team loyalty nor does any non dead-ender GOP that I know. If somebody breaks the law and harms someone else, go ahead and investigate, indict, try, and punish.

My stance on mass killings and the solutions to this problem including stricter gun control and no AR-15s doesn't pend on some lunatic's ability to shout "both sides!"  I don't cling to any thread I can find to maintain an insanely disengaged worldview where things are simple and I must be and have always been in the right.

ETA Clearly I'm behind on the thread. The shooting in Austin is just another grim day in the gun culture of the greatest country in the world envied by all.

I wonder if, relative to the US, the UK and NZ have a bunch of people dying because criminals have illegal guns and the "non-murderers" don't.... Oh, they don't have this issue. Fancy that. Wonder why that is....

Shrug. More guns is the answer.
