Not real sure where to put this, but it's been eating on me for a bit. My youngest daughter is a 5th grader at an elementary school in the OKC metro area, where she's part of the middle school cheer squad for youth league football.

This past Thursday, she brings home a flyer and raffle tickets for a fundraiser to help cover traveling expenses and uniforms and the like. Here's the flier and the raffle prizes (with all the personal identifiers white'd out)

IMG_2228.thumb.jpg.a1c024969e401a2891719d47c0153651.jpg

So my 11-year-old daughter is peddling raffling tickets whose prizes are all firearms. Now I've spent most of my life in the patch in western Oklahoma. I've seen gun raffles and the like before. I've never had a kid pushing those tickets or drawings though. Certainly not mine. No one else has batted an eye, but this feels all sorts of fucked up to me.

We live in a sick country

Well the Oklahoma version of "A Christmas Story" seems beyond fucked up, even for Oklahoma.

For all the "I'm a 2A freedom defender, responsible gun owner, and FFL dealer exemplary", I could not imagine in a million years using 11 year olds as your Biz Dev team.  Even if the money went to finally cure cancer, it just seems like an odd path to glory.

I don't have a huge problem with the plinker or the deer rifle, but that Taurus 9mm is incredibly inappropriate. That gun has literally no purpose but killing a human being.  I realize I'm asking a rhetorical question but how can people be worried that Lonesome Dove will "sexualize" a fifth grader with internet access, but not think that raffling off a Saturday night special will teach them disdain for human life? Sick, sick stuff.

Exactly. The last time I checked, you can't instantly kill someone with a book. What fucked-up irony that there is now a non-zero chance that a raffle prize for a middle school fundraiser may end up killing said middle schoolers before they leave middle school.

The thought crossed my mind. I don't know most of these folks as well as my wife, but the interactions I have had with them point to trolling a longshot. I don't think the folks in charge of this thing have the required grey matter.

No, I am not shocked.

For such a flat piece of prairie scrub, education in Oklahoma has been an endless uphill battle. Actually, it's not really a battle anymore. It's a shitty grudge match between parents trying to give their kids a better education and Mr. Ryan Walters, who continues to try and "Tex-orida" the curriculum or outright take control of school districts.

Also, it is Oklahoma. See above re: grey matter

Texas Cancels School Over Concerns Extreme Heat Not Safe Environment For Shootings

PLANO, TX—Citing faulty HVAC systems and temperatures over 100 degrees, Plano Independent School District in North Texas canceled classes Friday over concerns that the extreme heat made its campuses unsafe for mass shootings. “We take the well-being of our students very seriously, which is why we have suspended in-person school until the heat dies down and our buildings can be shot up without the weather putting anyone’s health at risk,” said superintendent Theresa Williams, explaining that the last thing the district wanted was for school shooters to pass out from dehydration or heat stroke. “We know that a disaffected assailant’s aim can be affected if the heat makes them too woozy, and that’s not a risk we’re willing to take. This is also out of consideration for the police, who would be standing outside in the blazing heat while the shooting took place inside.” Williams added that students would be better off if they spent the day doing all their shootings inside their air-conditioned homes.

“This shooting was racially motivated and he hated Black people,” Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said at a news conference. He said the shooter, who is White and shot himself after the attack, left behind evidence that outlined his “disgusting ideology of hate” and his motive in the attack.

All three victims were Black.

This is a natural and desired consequence of their openly preached ideology of hate. Demonize BLM, “thugs,” “urban hoodlums,” “most crime is black-on-black,” etc ad infinitum (seriously, it goes on and on and on)….and this is so predictable that it is clearly INTENTIONAL.

No, my friend. It's not a troll. Their ilk operates with a supernatural level of confidence that most people agree with them because they are so obviously right. It makes them argument-proof. It is the key graviton of what pulls this republic down.

The ascendency of over-confident Idiot World astonishes me. Ironically, I hope, that sorta makes me an idiot, too.

I was pretty happy until I opened this thread. Now I'm reminded. Gun culture. Idiotocracy. The fucking heat.

Oh, and I have read zero about this but my prediction is that DeSantis will have (had) a rational and reasonable response to this tragedy and we'll all be a little safer and the world a little more harmonious. 🙄

damn, I barely got through that without throwing my keyboard.

I forgot about this from May:

Quote

WASHINGTON – Today, the NAACP Board of Directors issued a formal travel advisory for the state of Florida. The travel advisory comes in direct response to Governor Ron DeSantis' aggressive attempts to erase Black history and to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in Florida schools.

The formal travel notice states, "Florida is openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals. Before traveling to Florida, please understand that the state of Florida devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by African Americans and other communities of color."

https://naacp.org/articles/naacp-issues-travel-advisory-florida

Sadly accurate.  Desantis predictably called the advisory a stunt.

It's not really a surprise to me at all that racist violence often manifested in mass shootings have increased.  The glee at which my friends who I thought had racist tendencies, let their guard down more and more as Trump became a Republican political leader and then President.  Words like "There were very good people on both sides." When on one side their were people desiring equality for all Americans and on the other side were Nazi's and other other assorted KKK like groups.  My racist friends heard the dog whistle.

Slowly but surely the racist jokes that used to be whispered, gradually gained volume.  They also gained more and more affirmation for like minded rural raised racists like themselves.  Who finally had a guy who understood their racism... he was the greatest President ever, because he understood the oppression and victimhood of the high school educated white man.  Who was angry about... damn near everything in their lives.

The one thing I have noticed in my lifetime is that the people I know who are openly racists and bigots are pretty stupid as a whole.  A few have college degrees, but most were small town raised young while men, who remembered what use to happen to "uppity N-words."  They liked the way things were back then, and they can lay ever problem at the feet of someone other than themselves, or their white parents and grand parents who actually ran the governments of their towns and counties.  Indeed even today, attempting to prevent black people voting is number one concern of the Texas Republican elected leadership.  Republicans now honestly believe that state governments rather than local governments deserve control when black people come into power in cities.

I expect a few more years of uptick in racism that has been stoked time and again by the GOP.  I expect these to be manifested in mass shootings, by people who vote Republican if they vote. And it's not going to change until the GOP gets some political beat downs in traditionally GOP strongholds like Texas.  Which of course will simply steer more hatred towards non-whites, by the party that is controlled and ruled from top to bottom with enormous influence from Rural racists.

There are shit ton of angry uneducated white men in this country.  The GOP has an overwhelming firm grip on this demographic, and it's the place where the most racist Americans proudly participate in politics.  And yes, uneducated, angry, racist white men that then to overwhelmingly vote Republican are and will continue to be a danger. Because after all... "there are very good people, on both sides!"

Brisket's hyperbole will never not be funny to me.    Even funnier when I consider he's got his on type of hate that he's OK'd with himself for 1/3 to 1/2 his countrymates due to their fucking policies on taxes and giving free shit to poors.  Absolutely LOL worthy.

Charlotte.  Buffalo.  Jacksonville.  Charlottesville.  Tree of Life.  El Paso.  Cedar Glen, CA. (just last week).

We have a very serious problem with a well-armed extremist terrorist movement, energized and encouraged by the political leadership of exactly one "side."  Turn off Fox News and the various conservative mouthpieces shouting repeatedly that minorities and gays are a deadly enemy whose existence threatens "our way of life" (that's not even a dog whistle, it's a plainly stated "here boy, come here!"), and these acts of terrorism fall off the cliff.

If Fox News and Ben Shapiro and Matt Walsh and Alex Jones were instead "Al Qaeda news" and various dudes with arabic names using the exact same rhetoric except with regards to American white folks, Fatty would be pissed off that Biden hasn't taken them out with drone strikes yet.  Yet because they rally support for his "team," the EXACT same terrorist techniques that Al Qaeda uses are not just overlooked, they are FUCKING REWARDED WITH HIS VOTE.

There are no dots to connect.  It's a straight fucking line.  American conservative rhetoric relentlessly paints blacks, browns, jews, and queers as deadly enemies.  What should any good person do when faced with deadly enemies?  Well, exactly what these fine patriots at the locations listed above have done: eliminate them.

And Fatty would equate that with....people making policy arguments for, say, a Universal Basic Income.  Jesus tapdancing motherfucking Christ on a goddamned pogo stick.

This is the thought that pains and keeps it real for me. The 52 year old lady, along with the two men, aged 19 and 29, left home to go the Dollar General. As we do everyday, they had a reasonable expectation they would return home, as had been the case countless times before. You just don’t want to believe that you’ll be shot to death because of a fateful decision to go the the store around the corner.

Quite literally one out of maybe a hundred mass shooting events and it’s a problem on “both sides.”

You know what? I’ll play. I’d like to eliminate those rare situations where a “libtard” carried out a mass shooting event IF it means we get all the right-winger events too. Let’s get rid of AR-15’s and similar, at least raise the age limit to buy/own one. Let’s enact strong red-flag laws. Let’s treat mental illness seriously. Let’s do all the things. My guess is your zeal for all of that goes go just about zero.

Oh it’s pretty fucking far from a both sides issue.  Take “white male” and AR15 out of our search criteria and tell me what you find about 4+ victim shootings.

me thinks you don’t gaf about mass shootings unless it fits your criteria.
