Underrated factor. My wife has a bunch of coworkers with high school aged kids in The Woodlands, etc. The ones that aren't going to UT or aggy all want to go to LSU, Bama, even Arkansas. It was eye-opening to me to learn that, but we hear it again and again.

Are SEC football powerhouses offering a better education than Tech, Texas State, UTSA, etc? Of course not. The difference is big time sports and the associated campus life. My bet is that most Texas public universities are fairly concerned about their branding/perception right now.

Mine both went to UArk, the cost was less than what it would have cost going to TT. (One was top 8% at TWCP and the other top 1/4 but couldn’t get into UT as both want to go the business route and had no chance at McCombs… now one is on the Deans list in Supply Chain but the other is going to transfer to TT (where he originally wanted to go before following his twin to UArk) as he hated the social scene at UArk… (Woodlands kids mainly went Greek in Pike and Fiji and both were tossed off campus the past year and it’s tough to go Greek for boys if you aren’t from select Dallas schools)

Did they not get a bid from other fraternities or did they just say to hell with it after Fiji and Pike got tossed? In my experience, fraternities sole purpose is to have as many dues paying members as possible to finance big ass parties.

Man Akers was so close to national titles in ‘77 as well as ‘83. His legacy could’ve been so different. Great defensive coach.

If Curry just got the hell away from the ball, so much would have been different for UT over the following decade. A triumphant Akers gets buy-in from boosters + recruits after reaching the promised land and competes on even terms with Switzer, Sherrill's momentum at A&M is blunted, and we don't panic-hire McWilliams. Once Switzer is busted and Sherrill fizzles out we run the SWC in its final years before heading to the Pac-10 in 1992 on a high note, while A&M and Tech are relegated to joining the Big Eight.

Instead 1985-1995 was a absolute graveyard of a decade where Switzer, Sherrill and Slocum took turns beating us every season.

About 50% of the kids at UArk are Greek so if you aren’t in, social scene is tougher. What mine didn’t realize is that a bunch of houses either limited to Arkansas kids only or the pipelines for Texas kids is mainly  6-10 high schools out of the DFW area. And most of their rush is durning the summer and freshmen show up with “pre-bids” before rush even starts so remaining slots for the big ones are limited. (He did get bids from some of the smaller ones but only wanted one from the big 10). Twin brother didn’t give a shit about going Greek and is having a blast…

To get this thread back on track, I think the moral of the story is for $5M would you tell your kid to pledge a crappy frat and have those bozos as "friends" for life in exchange for a 25% parental advisor's cut, especially if you thought your kid might not pan out in the end

And we wouldn't be tortured with "10 to 9" jokes ("What time is it? It's 10 to 9!") from JAWJA forevermore. 🤬
