Underrated factor. My wife has a bunch of coworkers with high school aged kids in The Woodlands, etc. The ones that aren't going to UT or aggy all want to go to LSU, Bama, even Arkansas. It was eye-opening to me to learn that, but we hear it again and again.

Are SEC football powerhouses offering a better education than Tech, Texas State, UTSA, etc? Of course not. The difference is big time sports and the associated campus life. My bet is that most Texas public universities are fairly concerned about their branding/perception right now.

Mine both went to UArk, the cost was less than what it would have cost going to TT. (One was top 8% at TWCP and the other top 1/4 but couldn’t get into UT as both want to go the business route and had no chance at McCombs… now one is on the Deans list in Supply Chain but the other is going to transfer to TT (where he originally wanted to go before following his twin to UArk) as he hated the social scene at UArk… (Woodlands kids mainly went Greek in Pike and Fiji and both were tossed off campus the past year and it’s tough to go Greek for boys if you aren’t from select Dallas schools)

Did they not get a bid from other fraternities or did they just say to hell with it after Fiji and Pike got tossed? In my experience, fraternities sole purpose is to have as many dues paying members as possible to finance big ass parties.

Man Akers was so close to national titles in ‘77 as well as ‘83. His legacy could’ve been so different. Great defensive coach.

If Curry just got the hell away from the ball, so much would have been different for UT over the following decade. A triumphant Akers gets buy-in from boosters + recruits after reaching the promised land and competes on even terms with Switzer, Sherrill's momentum at A&M is blunted, and we don't panic-hire McWilliams. Once Switzer is busted and Sherrill fizzles out we run the SWC in its final years before heading to the Pac-10 in 1992 on a high note, while A&M and Tech are relegated to joining the Big Eight.

Instead 1985-1995 was a absolute graveyard of a decade where Switzer, Sherrill and Slocum took turns beating us every season.

About 50% of the kids at UArk are Greek so if you aren’t in, social scene is tougher. What mine didn’t realize is that a bunch of houses either limited to Arkansas kids only or the pipelines for Texas kids is mainly  6-10 high schools out of the DFW area. And most of their rush is durning the summer and freshmen show up with “pre-bids” before rush even starts so remaining slots for the big ones are limited. (He did get bids from some of the smaller ones but only wanted one from the big 10). Twin brother didn’t give a shit about going Greek and is having a blast…

To get this thread back on track, I think the moral of the story is for $5M would you tell your kid to pledge a crappy frat and have those bozos as "friends" for life in exchange for a 25% parental advisor's cut, especially if you thought your kid might not pan out in the end

That's fanciful.

First of all, Akers shouldn't have sent Curry out there in the first place. Just send out the regular punt team. They'd never practiced it. Akers put Curry in a position to fail, and that's all there is to it.

Secondly, Texas was going down to mediocrity whether Akers won the championship or not. That '83 team was ridiculously loaded. But the recruiting behind that team had already been eroded.

Third, Akers wasn't that good of a recruiter. He recruited well in spite of himself. He would regularly slow play players, telling his staff, "you got to make them want it." He was terrible with African American families. Completely tone deaf. The staff would prep families for his in home visit, telling them what he'd say before he'd say it so they could just nod their head at how ridiculous he sounded rather than get offended.

Also, I don't know what you mean by a panic hire. The athletic department was poor at the time. Deloss Dodds wisely took a back seat regarding the head football coaching hire because he didn't want that to be a part of how he was measured for doing his job. If he just took marching orders on that hire he could go back to fundraising and make that what he was measured by.

There's also no way the state legislature was going to let Texas go anywhere without A&M, Baylor, and Texas Tech. Not without paying the price of opening up the PUF to all state schools, which wasn't ever an option.

Taking this back to recruiting, Iistened to Bobby and Gerry from yesterday's recording on my morning run and while most of it has been covered up thread, I think it's a few points are interesting and not getting sufficient attention (combining my thoughts with theirs below):

1.  Texas has a strategy in how it's allocating money, and while it's reasonable to think they are having to make adjustments, the basic outline of it follows a professional drafting model in which the team assigns a player a value.  That value is somewhat predicated on the player's demand, what was spent in the last class, and position group budget.  I'm presuming most smart teams are organized in this method, but losing the Ojo's (big guarantee on a riskier outcome) is likely a way for the smaller D-1 schools to remain an annoyance.

2.  I would also suspect these are exceptional but we'll see.  Basically, if the bottom 35 (of the top 60) D-1 school each offer an Ojo like NIL offer, that's probably compelling to a lot of the top rated prospects.

3.  Bobby wrote about this in what was posted up thread, as well, but the allocation of money amongst the top 25 or so is going to make for some interesting and diverse roster constructions, and maybe some of this ends up impacting stylistic choices, too.  For example, Texas and a lot of the SEC teams are chasing the same caliber of offensive line talent with the same basic scouting criteria (size, chiefly, over other attributes).  Maybe there's a market efficiency for going after cheaper, smaller lineman and tailoring the offense around the athletic limitations (obvious example is an offense that executes a lot of pulls, misdirection, options, etc.) in order to free up money for skill positions.  I doubt Texas would experiment here, but it might be the sort of thing a Vandy should try.

4.  Gerry reiterated that Texas will continue to pursue Malakai Lee and Winfield from USC, and hasn't given up on Jamarian Carlton (presumably getting Double Eagle offers).  Mark Bowman has an open offer, so does Lott.  It sounds like pretty much anyone who is at the top of the board is considered open until signing day, regardless of commitment status, and Texas is counting on coaching staff turnover, NIL chaos, and 2025 on field performance to have at least a few of these become open to renegotiation.  I'm guessing that's true for our current commitments, too.

5.  I know we're all gritting our teeth reading anything like "Texas is going to play by the rules" and "Texas won't be the first team to engage in NIL chicanery", but we are fortunate that Texas is coming off two very strong seasons in both on field performance and recruiting classes.  It's not just that there's talent on hand, it's that there appears to be a significant enough amount of player leadership that recruits can see how that's contributing to wins and draft positions.  It's going to be a lot easier to fend off Baylor, for example, offering someone like Okpala an extra $100K and/or early playing time if there's very clear developmental superiority and a team of aspirant professionals.

6.  Taking it back to recruit through the whistle, Sark hasn't historically moved on to subordinate choices but I think the roster needs and expansion under House would justify it.  There's going to need to be space for a Broughton to come in and develop for a few years at a lower payroll number even if he's not playing until year 3 or 4.

Broughton was a high 4 star. ESPN had him as the 79th best player in his class and 247 had him as the 10th ranked DT. That puts him squarely in Double Eagle money. Is that the type of guy you want to pay and store for three years? That would make an awfully expensive bench.

I didn't want to make my post even longer than it was, but the recruiting rankings look to be increasingly inaccurate relative to team internals (particularly if teams start diversifying player evaluations), and with the stakes getting higher (because of labor costs), smart teams are going to need to get a lot more professional about scouting and hiring.  You're not going to have a Saban who tolerates a 50% wash-out rate when there's so much money tied up in first and second year players.

Probably a more analytically minded organization might rate based on likelihood to contribute in year one, year two, etc., with the most compensation going for playing early (less risk).

Anyway, that's a long winded explanation for why Broughton is probably overrated if he was a 2026 recruit with the same rating on the recruiting services, but if teams start prioritizing early playing time then he's not a 4 star if he has to cook for two years before he's ready for spot duty.

I did think he's worth mentioning because he's very much a recent example of someone who needed to develop, and might be a good template for the back 5 or 10 players in a recruiting class in which most of the money is going to the headliners.

It’s pretty compelling to tell a kid, this is the number we have for you, but if 2 of our guys in your room go pro because they’re likely first or second day picks, then we’ll touch base on some different numbers in December. But we’ve gotta wait until then.

I didn't write on this because it probably needs to be better researched, but I have a feeling that Notre Dame is going after a certain fit at receiver rather than chasing after the best athlete/highest cost.  it might be a good example of a team acknowledging budget limitations, but also that they don't want to have to rely on a Carnell Tate or Jeremiah Smith to have a good offense.

I know a lot of them and you are correct.  If the House stuff proves to be a paper tiger watchdog, and if the Orange get a good coach, watch the $$ pour in to their basketball program.
