He was like some kicker whisperer.  Don't think we ever missed a game winning kick in his era.  Some big ones too.  Walk on Bailey against Nebraska in the snow when Lawrence got hurt.  Lawrence against NU in the Big 12 title game.  Tucker against A&M.  Mangum against Michigan.  Probably more I am not remembering.

Stockton pinged one in to beat Oklahoma St in 98, I think.

Would love to get Luke Wafle to go with Carlton for the EDGE takes.  The other likely options are Dre Quinn and the Duncanville kid we recently offered, Barnes.

I didn't know the Mangum kick vs Michigan was partially blocked until years later

A guy I know played on that team and told me Mangum had to take a piss really badly and did not have time to go to locker room.  So shortly before the end of the game, the team gathered around him and he pissed on the field.  Not sure if this guy was messing with me, but that is what he told me.

Lawrence wasn't hurt, it was the lefty transfer punter from Vanderbilt (Greg Johnson). who was also 2-4 on the day. Lawrence didn't become the full time kicker until 2008.

5-star Henderson has 8 OVs set with major* programs, so getting him to make an unofficial here all the way from Florida is an incredible pull by our staff… I’m assuming this is another LaAllan Clark relationship? This dude may turn out to be a major rainmaker.

(Vanderbilt one of the eight, maybe majorly ok after last year 😅)

He’s at the precipice of an enormous crossroad.

I get what you are saying, kind sir.

Having hiked up to the precipice of the numbered peaks at Breckenridge, I can assure you, there are no crossroads there, just a one way trail up.

The ride down? Standing at the top of the world, the purest of wind blown snow, the glitter filled air with newly formed ice crystals. Adrenaline overwhelms the rational thought processes. You gently slide over the edge, and immediately you are sliding face first towards the snow fence before the rocks that define the cliff, and the recreational skiers down below.

Somehow, you make it down, alive and in one piece. One more data point of a charmed life lived. Back among your people, the rational thinkers, on the marked trails.

The moment defines you. Skiing is meant to be a gravity sport, with the skis pointed downhill, not up. Time to grow up, old man.

Yes, the kid has a big choice in front of him. Choose wisely, son.

I assume 6th Street is asking that to highlight that Texas already has 2 in-state WR commits and neither is a difference maker and highly ranked. If he wasn’t pointing that out, I guess I just did.

I still think things are fine if Texas lands Finley and Lott.

I dont mind the strategy of taking a couple lower ranked dudes the position coach has an affinity for, specifically at the wide receiver position.

WRs usually aren't shy about moving on when it becomes clear they aren't good enough, and the identification of Dudes seems to come into focus alot more quickly than other positions.

Longhorn netdom legend and personal friend to a number of us, PhxHorn, used to have a saying to address this POV:

”The problem with taking a bunch of guys that are there more as program fits is that, well, eventually you have to play them. “

RIP Phx

That caught up to Mack. Can it catch Thirteen Win Theven? Well, the portal says “hopefully not”.  Parker Livingstone, however, says “probably so”.

I can't decide if I want him to be the greatest WR in the history of the program or for him to never play a single snap.

Him being awesome would provide endless entertainment for me and this board for years. I’m not talking about catching two long bombs against Sam Houston. Let him light up Ohio State and OU.

Just to be clear, I'm only applying the tired "3 star specials" argument to one single position. Everywhere else I want pedigree because without it you'll get physically overmatched.

At WR though some dudes are better at 7 on 7 than actual football. By the spring after their freshman season it's much clearer who those guys are

Slx’s dad passed away in Carefree, AZ way before NIL. Transferring is easy,  there are no more program guys and we have a coach who operates more like Jack Welch and Nick Saban trimming the fat than fucking Butterteeth.  And there is no way in hell that you can compare Brock Fitzhenry at a 5’8 170lbs from Hicksville Giddings to two well built 6’0” guys who run sub 11 100M from Pearland and Waxahachie.

On top of that, we’ve signed legit blue chips in Wingo, Ffrench, Lockett and Mccutcheon in consecutive classes, so it’s not like the staff is going all in on “under the radar” guys. We’ll probably end up getting 1-2 of the highly rated players in this class, based on recent recruiting, and it’ll be a moot point.

Yep. We signed what was probably the best WR class in the country last year, I didn't expect to do that two years in a row. If we land Lott, its all good imo.

Brown caught 54 balls at 20 ypc at Waxahachie.  He's going against above average DBs at Duncanville, DeSoto and Lancaster, so I'm thinking this guy really shouldn't be under anyone's radar.  I've missed before, but I like his profile and his tape, smooth no wasted motion.

I saw the Kohen Brown interview on OTF with Rod, CJ, and Jeff.   He’s an impressive kid.  High energy, confident, and seems to have elite work ethic.   He’s built for a WR and runs a 10.6-10.7 100 m.  Was 2nd to DK Moore in yards in his district going up against D1 athletes.  Dude is take all the way.    This guy is a 3 star the same way AD Mitchell was a 3 star…

Also, ND was pushing to get him as well.  His 100m time basically has all the schools knocking on his door now.  Saw what you want about Freeman and ND, they can evaluate talent and develop them.

Uhhhh did you see their WR room last year? It was... uninspiring.

Riley having him in the class at SC is a better indicator. Speaking of that, was he a numbers casualty or a real decommit?

I did.  I’m not going to hold the room against Freeman.  Jaden Greathouse was a very good eval on their end.   Dude has been there, what 2 years?  We had plenty of holes on our roster in year 2.  He’s offering and pushing for the same guys we seem to be.  Finley, Brown, KJ Edwards etc.  And yes, I do agree that Riley taking him is another indicator.  Riley knows about offense but I’d take Freeman as an evaluator of Riley at the college level all day every day.

His name is spelled with all “A’s,” like his grade since he arrived at Texas. Keep kicking ass, LaAllan.

Edited to add he’s also allegedly a helluva edge coach, with his own training academy before joining Ohio State. Here’s his list of pros he’s worked with in recent years:

The fundamental question is, will I be as effective as a boss like my dad was? And I will be, even more so? But until I am, it's going to be hard to verify that I think I'll be more effective.
