Yep - the ESPN power thing has been high on us all year including as I recall in all 3 of our conference losses so I don’t put much stock in it.

I just want to see how next year’s squad is looking, watch my Horns one more time in a game this season, have some NEISD recipe enchiladas whilst drinking beers from Washington with mdmost and then wait oh so impatiently to see how it plays out next season.

Pretty much. I will be very surprised with a win here.

Meaningless bowl games often come down to who's the most motivated. Washington seems much more excited about this game than Texas. I think I heard that none of their players are skipping. I expect us to lose convincingly, but it will be good to see the new guys and to get Quinn and the OL more live practice reps.

Maybe we’ll beat them… no, never mind that.

I doubt Manning arriving in 2023 has any bearing on how important the game is to Ewers.

If Texas is a couple of scores worse without Bijan, all the more reason to start getting his replacement(s) up to speed ASAP.

I think that we will be much more motivated than what some think. New guys want to make an impression. They will want to show the coaches what they can do for next season.

Same for ousux.  Lots of opt outs and FSU is motivated to get that 10th win plus all the players coming back.

I looked at Washington's schedule. They only played 3 teams with a winning record, losing to UCLA and beating Oregon State and Washington State. Their opponents combined record is 65-72. The only message board you can read is Hardcore Husky and they base their confidence in Penix and their hate/disdain for Sark. Their running game is meh. Teams that beat them ran the ball on them.

Not a ton of in here, but it's at least something about the game...

Spoiler

Kwiatkowski Seems to Relish Idea of Slowing UW Offense, Penix
The former Husky defensive coordinator has quickly rebuilt the Texas defense.
DAN RALEY12 HOURS AGO
Pete Kwiatkowski, for all of the positive things he did over seven seasons as this tough-guy University of Washington defensive coordinator, represented the beginning of the end for the Husky program when he left Jimmy Lake's staff for Texas two years ago.

Once he took the Longhorns job, the UW defense seriously went in the tank for the entirety of the 2021 season, giving up huge amounts of yardage game after game, in particular a groundswell with 343 yards rushing at Michigan and 329 more yards permitted Oregon at Husky Stadium.

This week, Kwiatkowski and the rejuvenated Huskies reunite for the first time since he moved to Austin, Texas. With his short, bristly hair, he still resembles a Marine drill sergeant.

Sitting down on Monday for an Alamo Bowl news conference, this Coach K acknowledged his prior ties to the Montlake program but he hardly was sentimental about it.

"I know a lot of those guys, recruited a lot of those guys," he said. "Obviously, I have a history with Washington."

That's where it ended with Kwiatkowski. He's in the midst of bringing back Texas to a level of defensive ferocity it hasn't experienced for several years.

Kwiatkowski has never spoken any ill of Lake, the head coach he abandoned and previously his Husky co-defensive coordinator. Still, it must have taken some getting used to, taking orders from his one-time equal.

It didn't hurt either that Texas offered to double Kwiatkowski's salary, bumping him from $980,000 to $1.7 million, reason enough to move to the Lone Star state.

Steve Sarkisian didn't know Kwiatkowski when he pursued him for a job, but he knew of him from prior meetings on the field.

In 2012, Sarkisian was the UW head coach and Kwiatkowski the opposing Boise State DC when their teams met in the Maaco Bowl and the Huskies won 28-26. However, Kwiatkowski's defense forced three critical turnovers that kept the game in question.

Three years later, Sarkisian was at USC, coaching what would be his last game with the Trojans, when Kwiatkowski's UW defense came up with three interceptions in a 17-12 upset win in Los Angeles.

On what amounted to an exit interview with Seattle's KJR radio on his way out of town, Kwiatkowski explained his reasons for taking the Texas job.

"We started started talking about his vision, direction, the staff, and one thing led to another,” Kwiatkowski told the station. “If you pair that with the staff he’s putting together, the guys I know on the staff, I’ve been here seven years. I think the timing was right for me to make this move and try another adventure, another challenge, and see where it takes me."

As for the current UW defense, Kwiatkowski's imprint still runs pretty deep with these guys. Eight of the 11 UW current starters are his former players. He coached Tuli Letuligasenoa, Faatui Tuitele, Bralen Trice, Alphonzo Tuputala, Alex Cook, Asa Turner, Dom Hampton and Mishael Powell, though only Letuligasenoa and Turner were first-teamers at the time he exited.

Kwiatkowski has put together a veteran Longhorns stop unit of mostly upperclassmen that permits just 21.2 points per game, or a little over half of what the Huskies average. He has some overly athletic players up front and an exceptional linebacker in junior Jaylan Ford, the leading Texas tackler with 109 and someone who was in the running for Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors.

While the UW enters the Alamo Bowl with a glistening 10-2 record, the Husky defense still hasn't totally recovered from that two-year-old defensive coaching change and the ensuing 2021 downturn, with the defense still a little too generous in serving up points and yards.

One player who Kwiatkowski doesn't know personally at all is UW quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who arrived from Indiana this past spring, but the defensive coordinator is fully aware of him. He seems to relish the opportunity to try and stop Penix and the Husky offense.

"We have a huge challenge in front of us, for sure," the coach said. "I know the guys are excited about it — the top-rated offense in the nation. That's why we go play. We have a great week of practice and preparation and then go out there and cut it loose."

ESPN power thing has us as a 75% chance of victory or whatever the fuck that means. I'm sure Huckleberry will correct that. Either way we could be fucked with new guys getting hit behind the LOS.

Texas is a 3.5-point favorite after all the declarations. My system has Texas as a much bigger favorite because it doesn't consider that stuff. Klatt could get some very favorable odds on Washington -13.5, he should look into it.

to be fair, Washington also beat Oregon.  The Pac 12 had 7 teams finish above .500 (including Washington).  UW didn't play USC or Utah, the top two teams in the conference.  The other 4 teams were Oregon, Oregon St, Washington St. and UCLA.  UW went 3-1 in those games.  UW played 2 cupcake and their "big" nonconference game was home against an underachieving Michigan St team.

Texas is definitely the more battle tested team.

Yeah sorry,  I knew they beat Oregon and forgot to count it.

The key to beating Washington is to shut Penix down; they win by out scoring their opponents.  They have to establish the pass to open their run game.

If Texas does not pressure Penix he could easily pick the defense apart.  Texas has faced passing teams all season long so this is nothing different...front four have to push the line back into Penix and mix the blitzes.  Penix has been injury prone in his career so they won't call too many QB running plays but he can scramble for yardage if the pocket breaks down.

UW's defense is porous and teams have put points up on them.

Hopefully Ewers has used the extra time to work on his game.  If Texas can get the running game going it will make it easier for Ewers to hit his passes.

Same. The NFL scouts should make them play. "You can declare for the draft, but we need to see one more game out of you for final evaluations."

Easy fix.  Stop supporting the NFL.

The world was a better place when you were either for Rutgers or Princeton or no one.

This is great value Texas.  Our two best players missing impacts how Sark can call the game.   When they stack the box and dare us to pass, like everyone else did, running anyway won’t work.  Have to throw first to set up the run, which means we lose if Ewers is still playing afraid.

Losing Overshown and Johnson could also hurt on special teams since they made a lot of plays in that area.   Need the P and K to have good games.

Just because they scare me to death doesn't mean we don't win by three touchdowns.

Play every down like it's your last - SCARED TO DEATH!

You look over there at the huskies and their great tradition of being left behind in a drying conference and just wow ya know

Somehow you managed to omit UW's biggest win of the year, at rival Oregon (#6 at the time), snapping their 20+ game home winning streak

Incredibly impressive omission 🙄

We can't all have the wonderful tradition of going to 3 Alamo Bowl's in 4 years. That's gotta be special

Still funny though. That would be like me looking at Texas' schedule and calling Oklahoma your best win.

You guys did get a big win at KSU, but other than that I see a bunch of moral victories and a win vs. UTSA

Since this was a message on a Texas message board, it wasn't necessary for to recap the good/bad/suckitude of some of our games. Go back and look at the game threads and you will see that there's probably a minimum of 50 pages per thread of every game. It's all been discussed. A lot of us don't stay up late to watch Pac 12 games, therefore most of us haven't seen UW play. I was just looking for a quick recap of your season. No where did I say "their schedule sucks worse than ours, we should win win convincingly". I was just pointing out identifiable stats.

That being said, I hope all that Big Penix energy everyone is talking about, turns out as limp as a 95 year old man without his viagra.

You didn't have to stay up late to watch the biggest games we played this year. We were on primetime a lot - vs. MSU, Oregon, Washington State, UCLA

It sucks for us Michigan State ended up sucking ass, but still
