Beto is really the only candidate who can clear the field.  His fundraising prowess--especially if joined with the Obama machine--would deprive Warren and Harris of needed funds.  And his grassroots organizational support would make him a very formidable candidate in Iowa.

If Obama throws his weight behind Beto--behind the scenes, of course--it would be nearly impossible for any other challenger to put together enough of a coalition to overcome Beto's advantages.

Good thing I held on to my Beto clipboard.

My complaint with Beto remains the same. He should let slip the dogs of war. He doesn't have to get down in the muck, but he damn sure better be ready to fight. The worst mistake Obama made was expectations for the unwritten rules and norms to be followed. Those days are over. Expect no quarter and offer none in return.

Beginning to suspect that this guy is a fraud.

Quote

O’Rourke’s wealth and connections helped him crush Hernandez (except in poorer, heavily Mexican American districts in South Texas, which Hernandez won). The national Democratic party and even progressive media outlets ignored her. O’Rourke essentially treated her as a nuisance, refusing to debate her, and Hernandez reports that when she met with him after the primary, he refused to make commitments on important progressive issues. Hernandez’s account of their meeting should be read by any member of the left who considers O’Rourke a reliable ally:

SH: He kept staring at me with his hand to his chin. I told him, “How do you expect people to vote for you, if you vote against us? If you vote for a seven hundred billion dollar military budget that is not earmarked for Vets? When that money could have been used for Medicare for all or college for all or a list of other things.” I mentioned I didn’t like how he followed the DCCC script on Medicare for all. He countered that he does not follow Party lines. He took offense and explained why he did not sign on to H.R. 676 because private health care would not get paid. I asked him to cosponsor H.R. 676 even if he doesn’t think it will pass. It’s a show of good faith and support for Medicare for all. He told me that he was not going to sign H.R. 676 just because it is what people want or because it is popular…. I asked him to explain why he was running, why he got into the race. I don’t have healthcare. I do not have a good paying job. Our families and our communities are impacted more than he is.

Interviewer: What did he say?

SH: He said he is running because he believes every Texan and person in the USA deserves affordable healthcare, schooling, and ways to support their family. I expected a candid response and I got his campaign speech. I wanted to get to know him as a person and instead I got what you see on television, a politician. I treated him with respect, I was honest and blunt. After all of that I wanted more

When you have far left candidates criticizing you for not being progressive enough, and Republican candidates warning voters that you are more liberal than you let on... you are probably perfectly positioned for a national race.

I have a feeling this is going to be like Clinton/Sanders all over again in that a good number of the left is going to criticize whoever runs as "not being progressive enough". The left would be wise to tell them to fuck off. The first goal is to defeat Trump, don't lose sight of that in the search for The Perfect Candidate.

I see a lot of similarities that provide cause for concern.

And yet I observe that we could do a lot worse.

I'm on the same page.  Most of the criticisms I had of Obama as a candidate, I have for Beto (lack of experience as a gov't executive, no real foreign policy chops, etc.).  That said....I think it's rather clear that we the people have decided that those things don't fucking matter in the slightest.  We're WRONG, but those seem to be the new standards.

Those aren't really my issues with Beto.  My issue with Beto is that there is scant evidence that as President he would support truly progressive causes and meaningful change.  His parroting of the "affordable healthcare" line is a giveaway.  Another Obama admin isn't going to do anything to address the underlying issues of this country and eventually we'll just end up with an even nastier reaction from the right if those problems are left unaddressed.  The next time the right comes to power we may not be so lucky.  They might land someone in power who is actually serious about their project.  Imagine if someone like Stephen Miller or Michael Anton were President instead of Trump and how much worse that would be.

No politician, right or left, is going to upset the American ruling class. That's why Democrats are all neo-liberal capitalists, even the ones who claim to be socialists.

You don't believe that Anton is a fascist?

I know he is not even remotely competent. He could be a card carrying Nazi, doesn't matter.

Brace yourself for this. You know how bad Trump is at everything? Manton is demonstrably worse. There is no way he would have convinced a bunch of rubes to vote for him. Trump did at least have a schtick and instinct for that.

I realize this guy came into y'alls consciousness during the run up to the election and all, so you may not really have a feel for him.

I think Biden only works if he commits to only one term, to basically unfuck everything Trump has ruined while also selecting a young and strong running mate like Beto who can run after him.  Still, the Democrats have the playbook... they need young and passionate.  Even Carter was only 52, even if he looked like he was 87.

These are shills for Bernie... they're already attacking other Dems, and specifically Beto, because Bernie is running again.  Sanders needs to understand the place where he can do the most good is right where he is.  He would make a lousy candidate.

Fuck Biden(76), Fuck Hillary(71) Fuck Bernie(77),  Fuck Pelosi(78), and all the other geriatrics that were asleep at the wheel in DC. Fresh blood is needed on both sides of the aisle if we have any hope of unfucking the clusterfuck that is our government. These fossils are the reason we are screwed, not the salvation. All this shit happened on their watch. Move along, failure noted.

The thought is nice but it’s an atrocious idea/strategy and isn’t realistic.

It’s surrendering the value of incumbency for nothing and no one goes through the living hell to become president for just one term.

Fuck Joe Biden, he needs to sit the fuck down and retire. If he made it through two terms he'd be pushing 90. I'll take a hard pass on anymore geriatric old fucks taking this country's highest office if you don't mind.

Honest question-has any serious presidential candidate (once past both primaries on both sides) ever verbally committed to the electorate that they would not run again if elected?  I'm talking about the first time out?

I voted for Beto.

The only way I will vote for him is as the Democratic nominee.

I will not vote for him in the primary.

if you bunch of fucking retards put some got damned socialist geriatric as the D nominee then Trump is going to get reelected.  As much as you and others here lament the old dumbass poors that voted for Trump, you 'not voting for him (beto) in the primary' means you are actively going to attempt to choose someone that can't/wont' win a national election.  Ergo, you're voting for Trump in the primary.  Great job Dennison.

He may not be the best candidate and is up there in years, but if Trump isn’t in jail, seeking assylum at some embassy, or dead from a massive heart attack and is running for president again, then the dem nominee needs to be Biden.

Trump can’t win without Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania and the dems nominating Biden ensures that Trump can’t win those states, and therefore trump cannot win the presidency again. A nomination of Warren or Kamela puts those states in jeopardy and that simply cannot be allowed to happen. I think Bernie wins those states as well but don’t think he’s gonna be the nominee, and am not sure about Beto yet but its a possibility.

If Trump isn’t running then I don’t really give a shit, nominate someone not named Hillary and I’ll be happy.

The economy is going to crash before that Election Day.

While you may be right that’s not something I’m hoping for, even though Trump must not be re-elected. Having the economy crash is not the way to do it, or at least I hope not. I’m thinking/hoping we are heading into a mild recession like the one that got Clinton elected in 92. Not that I want any recession but I think its got to be inevitable at this point. Thanks Republicans.

The Republicans can't win if Texas goes for the Democrat, irrespective of what happens in Michigan or Pennsylvania.

In other news, The New York Times has a real nasty story about Elizabeth Warren and the trouble she's having with progressives over her stupid DNA test.

Oh I completely agree. If trump loses Texas it don’t make a shit what happens anywhere else. Can Beto win Texas? I think maybe he can, but it will be very close.

Biden/Beto is the strongest ticket. And I don’t think it really matters which one is the President and the other is Vice President.

My fear is that the dems wont allow that because they think they have to have a woman on the ticket. They don’t, but you’re gonna see a lot of articles in the next two years talking about how they must have a woman on the ticket to win, despite evidence to the contrary.

The New York Times is the Fox News of print journalism sometimes.

This is one of those times and another example of the big money scared to death of Warren.

What a worthless article.

Hate to go all Brisket but an economy crash might be the quickest way out of Trumpism for America.  We’ve basically voted our way into it.

If there are no real consequences for our poor electoral decisions, how are we ever going to learn?

Don’t worry, America would recover.  It always does.  It would also create some great buying opportunities.

While you are probably right, if trump is the president when the economy crashes the risk of an extremely negative outcome go way up as opposed to when we are in a normal presidency, which is basically most every presidency before this one. Not that it would happen but just talking about acceptable levels of risk.

If there's a serious economic collapse plus Mueller comes out with GOP treason I think dems are looking at constitutional amending majorities in Congress and state legs. That may be what it takes to clean this shit up.

What do you see that would indicate an economic crash? Or do you mean stock market crash?
