Arch came out and said exactly what we all saw. He wasn’t good enough, and some of you will still come on here and deflect and try and lay blame elsewhere. Sark didn’t call a perfect game, but he called a good enough game for us to win even if the QB was average.

young QB....huge stage....incredible pressure.....and yet I never saw any coach try nd calm/ settle him down. They were treating him like a pitcher carrying a no hitter into the 8th inning.....no one dared talk to him. Strange to me.

Is he worse than Kyle Flood?

The offensive line penalties and missed assignments looked like Flood had the new guys in midseason form.

They didn’t want to jinx the shutout he had working.

The o line was far from the problem. He had plenty of time all day

The QB had over 200 total yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT.  What do you think average against maybe the best defense in the country on the road looks like?

I'm frustrated with Arch missing so many throws, too, but if Coach doesn't inexplicably start calling Tim Tebow runs inside the 10-yard line, we win that game 21-14.

The play calling should really never have a bad day, and this has happened a bunch of times with Sark.  I'm way more worried about that than I am about Arch Manning.

A unit that makes penalties in crucial situations is not “far from the problem”.

It is part of the problem.

And when it doesn’t get fixed year after year, it is a glaring part of the problem.

And their blocking on the last (offensive) play was shit.

Sark should go pass heavy the next 3 games to get Arch comfortable. Assuming he only plays 3-ish quarter in each, he needs as many passing reps as possible.

No need for Wisner or Baxter to carry a heavy load. Get Christian Clark and Simon some touches. Keep that room fresh and healthy for conference play.

OL was fine yesterday. If we got a comparable level of play at QB we win by double digits.

This bothered me too. Him and Quinn were often pictured under that same overhang staring off into the distance last year. Maybe it's just bad memories so I hated seeing it again, but damn I hate seeing him look lost on the sideline. Fire yourself up and get your team going. Or is there no other leader to go and fire him up and wake him up a bit? I get the team knows him better than I do, but are the days of lighting a fire under your team's ass gone? Vince would have had a half like that and still be bouncing on his toes on the sideline ready to make it right. Either you're going to be the leader of this offense or you're not.

Maybe don’t ignore he was 17-30 and set a record for inaccuracy percentage and you’ll realize that was a below average game from Arch. He realizes it not sure why that is so hard for some of you.

When Arch (or Quinn) is on the sidelines you get to see the moments the TV producer decides they want you to see and only those exact moments.  Making a judgment based on those combined 30 seconds of sideline footage in a +3 hour game is a lame lazy take.

Good god. Y'all are delusional. Arch wasn't kind of bad. He was fucking completely incapable of executing basic plays. Play calling isn't go to fix that. Arch has to play better. And he knows it.

Agreed. But I'm assuming there are Surly posters at the games that keep an eye on the sidelines. I'm curious what our QB's communication is like with assistants while defense is on the field.

You said that Sark called a good enough game to win with average QB play, and that is not correct, because the average QB is not a fucking battering ram inside the 10-yard line.

We got enough from Arch to win this game (200+ total yards, 1 TD, 1 INT).  We didn't get enough from Sark.  Give it to Baxter and Wisner, who were having perfectly good days, inside the 10.  Call a WR screen.  Literally anything other than what Sark called.  How many fucking goal line stands does Ohio State have the last couple of years?

I'm not saying Arch was fine.  He needs to be better, and he will be.  But the play calling in the red zone has been a persistent issue for years now.  That is, without question, the bigger concern.

Commentary this whole year was Arch had nerves of steel.  He’s a Manning. He was born for this moment.  He’s been groomed for this.

I think the moment was just too big for him yesterday. #1 team, all that attention, playing the champion their house.  He shit the bed.  In fact I’m kind of relieved he was that bad because no d-1 qb can be that bad.  I’ve seen him make the throws.  He has a great arm

The only reason we all know he’ll be better was because that was so bad. The floor and ceiling expectations for our season are now lower. We may have the best defense in the country but it won’t matter because our QB play is below average

Jesus tapdancing Christ, it was ONE GAME.

Sark has been fucking up red zone trips FOR YEARS.

Obviously, the right answer is that they both have to do better.  But I'm afraid that one of them isn't capable of it.  And I'm a Sark fan.  But this Achilles heel of his can fuck up absolutely everything.  It is a way bigger deal than several misfires from a green starting QB in the toughest game of his young life.

Fuck, this is ridiculous.

The criticism of Sark is just laughable, and prove that if a coach starts listening to the fans, he will soon be sitting with them.

OSU's weakness is DL depth.  The game plan was to run right at them with some sideline to sideline to wear them out in the first half, keep the score close, then loosen it up in the second half and win in the 4th quarter against a tired D.

It would have worked with a QB that was an average college passer.

Two concerns that are both personnel related:  1. The QB is inaccurate and has poor touch on the ball; 2. the inability to punch it in within the 5 yard line.   They are related, because if the QB is not a threat to throw when the field in compressed near the goal, then the D can stack the box for the run

Yep. A high school qb could’ve done better than that.  Arch had the yips.

Blaming the 3rd and 5 crosser miss on Wingo and not Arch is quite the take. A really, really bad take. In your attempt to gloss over a terrible QB  performance you actually try to pin the blame on a side armed, 2 yards behind the receiver pass on Wingo somehow. Bravo sir for a 10/10 fan delusion post.

It hit his hand.  And he jumped.  Both feet left the ground.  Why?  It touches his hand a foot off his back shoulder.  He never stops.  I’m not sure he slows.  Then leaves his feet.  You can take a screenshot with the ball out of the hand with the ball out in front of Wingo.  It’s like he saw it late or was trying to keep his stride for the big play rather than just catch it.  But sure, go with your initial impression and dead set on any alternative theory.

Ah the arrogance of the white man.

I fully admit this is overanalyzing, but based on yesterday's performance I think Sark did Arch absolutely no favors with how he used him post-Mississippi State game last year.

Arch only saw the field again in high pressure situations. Throw into the fire vs. UGA when Sark benched Quinn. Used as a battering ram in the A&M and playoffs. All those positives from Mississippi State game (yeah, they suck on defense, but still Arch was fantastic) and being comfortable as a pocket passer got thrown out the window for the rest of the year. It's clear Arch was WAY too tight yesterday and some of that could have carried over from second half of season last year.

The offensive line not only was far from the problem but they played really well. Arch had clean pockets and we had success in the running game against a great defense. After rewatching the game this morning Stroh was extremely effective in pass blocking and so was Baker. Obviously two false start penalties need to get cleaned up but both tackles straight stonewalled their edge rush.

So is he playing games with his feet to keep defenders keying to the other side, or is he just getting lazy with his footwork?  Because guess what the ball missed to the side his lower half was still pointed towards.

Is that how they teach footwork at The Manning Pass academy? That has to be the worst possible mechanics a QB can display aside from tossing the ball underhanded granny style.

the latter.  that was the point of the tiktok I posted above.  Everyone is trying to be Mahomes these days.  You're not mahomes and you don't need to be.  Set your feet and stop fucking around on a simple crossing route.

He is running a fucking shallow crosser to beat man coverage dipshit. Wingo is going full speed and Arch is supposed to lead him across the field not sidearm a ball two yards behind him. Yes Wingo contorted himself and got a hand on the ball in the process but you have to be fucking retarded to lay blame on the receiver.

Yeah, that was encouraging.  tOSU was only rushing 4 most of the time, but their guys were not winning the 1v1's at all.  Arch had plenty of time.  He just saw 7-man coverages and didn't make decisions quickly enough.  But that can be worked on, and that secondary is excellent.

I expect Arch to be in a much better place by the time we go to Gainesville.  He can grow a lot with 3 games and a bye week.

I agree with this take, and the decision not to permanently bench Ewers in the first Georgia game kind of came home to roost yesterday when the moment looked too big for Arch.

This seems to be a huge part of the red zone problem.  Whenever we play quality teams (here I am referring to injuries, etc., not simply the fact that they are quality teams), some combination of QB, OL, and RB are experiencing dysfunction such that the offense as a whole has become pretty one-dimensional and predictable.  Bring that offense into short-yardage and fuhgeddaboutit.
