Quoting for the future.

Peak Sam Ehlinger was actually pretty damn solid. Also, none of us will ever know what Sam’s potential could have been in a real offense.

I had minor knee surgery six weeks ago. I was cleared to go for a 2 mile jog this morning.
Got dressed, went out the front door.  Unfortunately, I have forgotten how to run.
The last time I checked, I had an IQ of 142, but this is just mind bottling

i’m trying to think of another qb in the history of college football who has been scrutinized as closely or as harshly through four career starts as arch manning, and i can’t think of anybody. not even close really. it’s actually wild. the. wry same media who propped him up to be “a generational talent” before he’d had a chance to prove anything are now all tearing him down. an alarming number of Texas fans (many of whom worshipped quinn) are joining in. i’m not too worried about it, because his maturity is on another level, but it is very strange to watch. unprecedented.

True.

Also, declaring Arch's ceiling after 4 starts, possibly dealing with a shoulder injury in 2 of them, is remarkably stupid, even for Surly.

Here is your friendly weekly reminder that through two seasons and 26 games, Colt McCoy had 51 touchdowns and 25 interceptions.  He still holds our school record for interceptions in a season.  Then he was a two-time Heisman finalist.  So maybe everybody could calm their tits, yeah?

reptitions matter but it doesn't matter it's obvious his QB coach and HC are telling him not to. There was at least 3-5 opportunities where he should have taken off instead of ripping low percentage throws. It's just brain dead of Sark to not tell his QBs, especially athletic ones like Arch, to not take free yardage.

The market for "free" yardage is determined by demand/risk. There was little demand for free yardage in the game thus acquiring it and assuming the risk would be poor judgment. (Not bad for an RTF grad!)

It is equally braindead to tell your QB—a QB for all his flaws at present is the only one on the roster who can take the team deep into the CFB playoffs this year—to run the ball in any situation against San Jose Fucking State.

Correct, IMHO.

Further, Manning needs work on seeing the field as a passer not a runner. He's playing like a very promising QB in his first year starting. We've got some lesser opponents lined up, this is an opportunity to work on weaknesses not strengths, IMHO.

I despise the dull minded sportswriting world that has treated his first year starting as a coronation. Then they get all mad because they look like idiots for expecting so much, so, naturally, they believe the problem lies with Manning.

When I used to buy Dave Campbell's mag every year, they had a run of being wrong about who would win the SWC. After about seven consecutive faulty predictions, whoever wrote that column (Dave hisself?) stated that the onus of being chosen by Dave Campbell's Texas Football to win had been too much for those teams.

Sure, Dave, you weren't wrong; they just couldn't take the pressure of your correctness.

So it goes here.

I think we win it all next year with Manning. Maybe by the end of this year, he'll be playing like a veteran and we will do well should we make the playoffs. Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy ride. Should be exciting no matter what.

Fellas, great idea here: in a QB room with a journeyman and 3 freshmen, lets have your (possibly hurt) QB1 on his 4th start run the ball around against a high school opponent instead of using the snaps to work on his throwing decisions and mechanics.

You act like the not running is just a SJSU gameplan and it’s not. We barely ran him against OSU when we needed something to jump start the offense. I completely understand not having a bunch of runs against SJSU. I don’t understand not running against OSU. Sark doesn’t like his QBs to run and that is stupid when you have a QB who is capable of making dynamic plays with his legs.
Injuries happen in football whether your qb runs the ball or not. Limiting your playbook out of fear of injury is just dumb, especially when the offense struggles to move the ball as is.

Man, anyone who watches that clip above & thinks Arch doesn't look hurt, I dunno what to tell you.

Is he hurt bad enough or in an area where he's risking more damage by playing? No way for us to know. But it's pretty evident to me that he's dealing with a physical problem that's limiting his throwing ability. He did mostly do better today than a week ago, so who knows? Maybe it's improving somewhat. We'll see.

If he is hurt and it isn't him just making goofy Manning faces my guess is "rotator cuff weakness".  Having a son that was a pitcher through high school dealt with that.  You can play through it some (not generally wise as a pitcher, not sure what implications are for a QB but imagine similar) but you are going to lose velo, command etc to some extent.

General approach is 2-6 weeks with no activity and some PT.  That first part probably ain't happening in this situation.

Arch Manning injury update: Did Texas football QB get injured vs SJSU?

Texas football quarterback Arch Manning said he wasn't dealing with any pain when he met with the media following the Longhorns' 38-7 victory Saturday over San Jose State

The ABC broadcast showed Manning grimacing as he released a pass intended for Ryan Wingo over the middle that ended up well off target.

"I got to make that throw," Manning said when asked about the play and his facial expression thereafter. "He ran a good dig route, so I got to make that throw."

So what was with the grimace? Just something he does without realizing?

"Probably so," Manning said. "I don't even know."

Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian brushed aside a question about Manning's health, too.

"I don't know," he said. "News to me."

Manning improved upon his subpar showing last week against Ohio State, completing 19 of 30 passes against San Jose State for 295 yards, four touchdowns and an interception.

His four-touchdown showing matched his career high, equaling his four-TD mark after coming on in relief of Quinn Ewers against UTSA last season. He also rushed for an additional touchdown Saturday.

Manning was lifted in the fourth quarter with the Longhorns holding a 38-7 lead as the second-team offense entered. Though Sarkisian said the backup situation was "fluid," when asked about it earlier this week, he elected to go with the veteran Matthew Caldwell in garbage time. Caldwell completed two of his three passes for 22 yards.

Fellow baseball dad here. It's obvious he is dealing with some kind of arm issue because I have: 1) eyes; 2) common sense.

I don't care what anyone says in a media interview.  What are he and Sark gonna say?  "Yeah, Arch is battling a sore shoulder but we're having him play through it anyway."

Is there an arm injury that makes it easier to heave a 50 yard missile downfield than it is to toss the ball to a WR crossing about eight feet in front of you? He is having a very difficult time with that. It's like Bizarro Ewers.

Not sure what it is, but Arch to Wingo connection is nonexistent through 2 games. It has looked really ugly at times

Sure, like I said as a pitcher you lose a bit of velo with a minor shoulder injury but the part that affects performance more is that you lose command as you start to compensate for pain or the potential for pain and have trouble hitting spots.

All that said, remember this is in the blood

Don't worry, next summer you will get to hear all about how A) Arch's arm is fully healed and feels better than ever and B) how he's spent all summer working out with Wingo and developing a great rapport

He seems better at deeper throws with air under them, like long toss, which actually requires less arm strength and exertion than "pull down" or "mound throws," to continue with baseball analogies.

Obviously, I don't know fuck about shit here (none of us do).  I'm probably just wishcasting that's it some injury issue that can be healed vs just not being very good at throwing the thing he's supposed to be good at.

Good lord man, dial back the grievance lol. Arch is making a bunch of bad decisions during games. He will develop.

But it's extremely aggy to wag your finger and tut tut at fans who want to see a good product on the field and not just ugly penalty and mistake filled football. Accepting mediocrity is how you end up perennial 8-4 records

Sark had no problem running him last year, on several designed plays. Arch needs to read the field and he is only going to get there through reps.  Zone read , RPOs would immediately improve our offense. And we have plenty of RBs who can tote the rock in the RPO. If Arch happens to pull one and scampers tor a TD tha is gravy.  Also, we have to have a lineman who can play fullback. We should hammer their lines a couple times a series for effect.

Wtf...

I was disappointed last week but not surprised. That was a tough game against a good defense in a hostile environment with the weight of the world on his shoulders.

This week I thought he looked like a great, young QB. Just keep throwing the ball and let him run the full offense until we score 50. He will continue to progress and be the player we all hope he will be. The more reps, the better.

I think the team looks really talented and will be competing for a NC at the end of the season. The D was dominant and the offense looked much better. Loved the way Baxter ran and Clark looks like he has a little something. It's going to be a fun season!

I thought he looked better. He did account for 9.8 yards/att, over 300 total yards, and 5 TDs.. He still doesn’t trust himself over the middle of the field. That is where a lot of the off target throws are and where the turn downs have occurred. His pocket feel was really good. He is really helping the OL in pass protection. Easy mover
