Jesus tapdancing Christ, it was ONE GAME.

Sark has been fucking up red zone trips FOR YEARS.

Obviously, the right answer is that they both have to do better.  But I'm afraid that one of them isn't capable of it.  And I'm a Sark fan.  But this Achilles heel of his can fuck up absolutely everything.  It is a way bigger deal than several misfires from a green starting QB in the toughest game of his young life.

Fuck, this is ridiculous.

You're blinding yourself to truth. I'm sorry. He was fucking terrible yesterday. No play calling was fixing that. Blaming that play on Wingo is absurd. You have no fucking clue what you're looking at.

I'm not the guy who blamed that miss on Wingo.  That was a terrible throw.

Man, that first missed throw to a wide open Moore really set the tone.

Out of the first 10 throws, three were uncatchable, 2 were barely catchable and made the play very difficult (and weren't caught), 1 was a very bad decision into double coverage. I think that is a pretty good summary of his day.

A tattoo???

Tatoo place on Sheppard inside the loop has a sign out by the road, get the tatoo, your family is already disappointed in you.

After watching parts of a number of games and two full games the past few days there has been a few apparent things about quarterback play.

First, experience matters.

As a few posters here have already mentioned, Sayin didn't exactly kill it yesterday which isn't an excuse for Arch's play, but snaps in live game action matter./

Arch, Sayin (who reminded me of Bryce Young),  and Ty Simpson all struggled yesterday and missed throws that have to be made if you are going to win games and compete for titles. Simpson is a damn junior and his 43 throws yesterday were damn near as many as he had in three years prior at Bama and it showed multiple times in the game.

Second, the fit of the quarterback and scheme is damn important. FSU's quarterback looked like he was made for the offense,  Dampier of Utah was a fucking machine as they destroyed UCLA , and even Arnold looked productive at times in an offense that didn't ask him to do what he can't do to often against Baylor.

Makes me wonder if coaches at times really don't know what skill sets work best in their offense.  Not sure if Arch really was comfortable with what Sark was asking him to do, but that will play out.

Finally, most media don't know what the fuck skills and abilities make a successful quarterback.

Late in the game Arch makes the deep throw to I think the Horns tight end and Gus Johnson proclaims that was a professional throw.  Actually, Gus, I saw similar throws made a few times yesterday.  Putting the ball up in a jump ball situation isn't that unique and if that is all it took to play in the NFL then Anthony RIchardson's arse would be starting for the Colts.

What matters is throwing receivers open, what matter is not just completing passes but putting that ball in a position where only the receiver can make the play and often times puts the receiver in a position they can make a play after the catch.

Arch missed a number of those, but I guess since I am not a Horn alum I can be a bit more patient .

You would think reading this thread that this was a UCLA board and you might be thinking that regardless of how hard or far NIco can throw a football he has zero leadership or understanding of an offense and the passing game.

Yes, I know he is a Manning, big fucking deal, that is worth zero point on the board.  I think I recall hearing Klubnik was MVP of the Manning passing camp and a top ten pick and he looking pretty damn blah when it mattered against LSU at home.

That throwing motion ....Matthew Broderick GIF

Also, he held onto the ball way too long. Good thing out OL gave him plenty of time or we would be looking at a bunch of sacks.

Arch played like shit but that sideline pass to Endries was a legit dot. Great throw with the arm strength needed to fit that in a tight window.

Was legit,   great arm strength, but once again not unique, and if want to have a log career playing on Sundays you need to make those throws he missed and make the right decisions.

Sad thing is even on the big plays (Endries and Livingstone), it took great throws by Arch. That is not to excuse the misses. Not much to like about the passing game. Endries will be a player, but the WRs need to step up there game

His footwork and mechanics seemed solid throwing from the pocket.  On the run, he gets wonky and sidearmed.

I did like that throw late where he had to have heard the hoofbeats coming up from behind but stood tall and got the ball away.  Ewers would have bailed to his right and gotten clobbered anyway, most likely injuring his pancreas in the process.

The full game summary of his throws was slightly more gruntling than I came away thinking right after the game.

Just spitballing, but Ewers lost much of his playmaking abilities that he had over the course of three years here. He did stuff in 2022 that he either couldn’t or just wouldn’t do in 2024. Now Arch looks like he was mentally fucked from the kickoff and missing throws he should make in his sleep. Is this paralysis by analysis? Thinking too much instead of just playing?

The WR bubble screen to the short side of the field that looks like a loss of yards no matter how perfectly the ball is placed?  I mean its 4 v. 3 and there doesn't appear to be any room for the WR catching the ball to use the blockers to interfere with the the LB who is coming in to blow up the play.  Not to mention the safety about ten yards deep who can clean up any mess if needed.

Looking back at this is really helpful.  Arch had some nice throws and had some bonehead ones too.  Guys were open all day long.

tOSU rushed 3-4 mostly sometimes 5 and the OL and RB pass pro was REALLY good. Almost no pressures on arch.

if arch is accurate on 5-6 more throws Texas wins.

obviously sarks 4th and go for it suuuuucks. Fix that Texas wins.

I’m not sure we are that far off if this was truly just the jitters. We’ll see.

I haven't read this whole thread and don't know if it's been mentioned, so sorry if it's already been discussed...

My wife who is a physical therapist and paid no attention to the game yesterday, watched some of the highlights (lowlights) with me today, especially a bit that was "every Arch Manning pass attempt."  She asked, "What did they say about his shoulder injury?"  I said, "Nothing, why?" And she said, "when he's throwing sidearm it looks like he's guarding against some kind of injury.  And in a lot of cases he looks like he doesn't have much power on the ball, is that normal for him?"

In retrospect that would explain a lot.  I obviously hope it's not the case.

As an independent viewer, I too was surprised at how poor Manning played.  I will have to lay some of the blame on the coaching staff for not scheduling East Cupcake University in Week 0 giving this guy a chance to work off some cobwebs before facing Ohio State in Columbus in the opener.  Thought some of the red zone play calling did him no favors as well.  Just my 2 cents.

A lot of room for improvement here but he definitely showed flashes. The throw to Endries to start out the final drive was on point. The out route to Livingstone was a pretty good throw as well. Hopefully as he gets more experience, the game will slow down for him.

I keep thinking back to the development arc Sam had in 2018. He looked rough against Maryland and to a lesser extent Tulsa, then things really started to click for him.

This is excellent too. Mechanics not decision making. In fact he was working progressions pretty well. Thinks it was panic and said tOSU defense was ultra complex. Does say sark is a bit predictable too. Shows tOSU defense pretty much ready for sark’s tendencies - this O guy goes that way, another one is coming this way tendency.  The motion disguising zone with a DB following and sark calling a man route that ended in a zero loss sack was impressive.

also makes a reference to an NFL coach that said Arch can’t layer the ball doesn’t have the touch pass yet (at all).

Gave kudos to the open WR that arch missed for not having bad body language. Lots of cat and mouse games but tOSU was prepared for sark’s tendencies

I think Sark's offense has had its biggest problems when defenses switch up from the pre-snap read (line up in Man - play zone or vice versa) into what they actually end up doing.  Ohio State did a lot more of that than I saw when I watched it live.

The Film Guy review also shows just how good Caleb Downs is as a football player.  Running up into the box knowing a run is coming.  Jumping routes.  Dude is just awesome.  Really reminds me of Ed Reed at just being on another level mentally than other players.

He seemed to have a good pocket and decent time.  We watched him last year make throws on the run. We watched his touch. His accuracy.   Yesterday we watched him fail to hit water from a boat. The first pass wide open 20 yards would have been such a statement and it looked like a 1 armed invalid with cerebral palsy throw it.    His touch. His accuracy. It’s like he went in absolute reverse.  Short in the dirt at the feet or 4 feet over head.  Basic shit that trey owens or case McCoy fucking Tyrone swoops could do.   I really hope the hype just ducked him in the head. Because we all saw Quinn regress through the years and never improve on anything beyond 8 yards.  I just cannot beleive that was normal calm cool swagger nuts hang arch.  That shit was first time Ever playing qb. Arch is gonna hate that film.  we have guys open downfield everywhere and he has time. pockets were mostly clean. the clock in his head is obviously going faster than it needs to and he's hitting checkdown after checkdown.

almost no anticipation as well.  the throw to wingo on the crosser is horrible everything(footwork, arm angle, timing, etc).

He did have about 5 really good throws but that was about it.

Wingo’s route on the interception was awful. Arch threw a poorly times meatball but still. He did arch no favors. Has there been any conversation so far on the new-ish wr coach and his development skills?

100% this.  He was sped up for no reason because he got solid protection most downs.  But he sub-consciously sped himself up which led to him not turning his shoulders or feet towards the target.  It's almost like he was trying to show he could make all these Matthew Stafford type of arm angle throws without his feet underneath him.  It was very strange because the mistakes he was making in technique are extremely foundational and simple.  It's stuff that he's been taught 1000 times, but it's what happens when you're confused, processing slowly and the clock in your head is so sped up, you cheat on your mechanics and make bad and inaccurate passes.  He just needs to chill a bit.... slow himself down and process quicker.

The criticism of Sark is just laughable, and prove that if a coach starts listening to the fans, he will soon be sitting with them.

OSU's weakness is DL depth.  The game plan was to run right at them with some sideline to sideline to wear them out in the first half, keep the score close, then loosen it up in the second half and win in the 4th quarter against a tired D.

It would have worked with a QB that was an average college passer.

Two concerns that are both personnel related:  1. The QB is inaccurate and has poor touch on the ball; 2. the inability to punch it in within the 5 yard line.   They are related, because if the QB is not a threat to throw when the field in compressed near the goal, then the D can stack the box for the run

Maybe Mr. QB whisperer needs to live up to expectations? If he can't show progress despite developing a QB for 2 years, then get someone who can.

Worse than I remember. I’m still not sure which receiver he was trying for on the pick. Also, that 2nd & 5 miss to Endries was just as bad as the 3rd and 5 miss to Wingo. The bright spots were bright though?

Exactly what I thought it was. He sucked on short and intermediate. He had some dots up the sidelines. He had athletic ability outside the pocket and looked more comfortable on quick drop throws than he did on complex routes and drops

One thing Arch needs is some discretion in changing the playcall. The most grievous example was on the fourth down at the goal line. He should have been able to look across the field and either call timeout or change the play. If Sark isn't calling the plays that make him comfortable, then he needs to change the play. THis is also another way to knock down Sark's tendencies to call shitty plays.

We've seen the tape, we know what he can do. With even an average game from Arch we would have won this handily. I am not worried at all. Love the "adopted" joke from Payton.

Downs also signaled a different zone coverage when arch looked and then went back to cover three and arch never saw the lie and a guy was wide open in the spot downs pre snap faked to. Caleb downs really might be the best CFB this year

Yeah, that was encouraging.  tOSU was only rushing 4 most of the time, but their guys were not winning the 1v1's at all.  Arch had plenty of time.  He just saw 7-man coverages and didn't make decisions quickly enough.  But that can be worked on, and that secondary is excellent.

I expect Arch to be in a much better place by the time we go to Gainesville.  He can grow a lot with 3 games and a bye week.

Yeah, more experience hopefully helps Arch -- welcome to "The Show".    Colt and VY had bad games too
