Columbus ought to be on fire now with the riots from this hire. Wow.

On top of the news yesterday that they poached Ross Bjork from aggy to be their new AD.

Yes, the same Ross Bjork that massively fucked up aggy's latest coaching search.

Methinks Columbus is about to go through some shit.

Sources: Texas A&M adding Jordan Peterson to the staff

JOHN BRICE        21 HOURS AGO

Jordan Peterson, who’s been a key cog in Lance Leipold’s Kansas rebuilding project, is on the verge of a new challenge.  Sources tell FootballScoop that Peterson is a top target to join Mike Elko’s inaugural Texas A&M staff in a senior defensive assistant coaching post and the deal is expected to be completed today. Billy Liucci has just shared the same.

Peterson is a former Aggies player who launched his coaching career at his alma mater before he added stops at Fresno State for five seasons and three more at New Mexico before he logged four seasons with the Jayhawks.

Peterson was elevated to co-defensive coordinator for Kansas after the conclusion of the 2023 regular season. He had been an on-field assistant coach three of those four seasons at Kansas.

Won't be surprised if Danny also helps coordinate the defense with Akina.

Arizona to hire former Mountain West head coach to coordinator spot

Former New Mexico head coach Danny Gonzales is expected to take a prominent role on Brent Brennan's Arizona staff, per ESPN.

ZACH BARNETT   7 HOURS AGO

Former New Mexico head coach Danny Gonzales is set to join Brent Brennan's new Arizona staff as special teams coordinator and linebackers coach, according to a report Wednesday from ESPN.

The Albuquerque native has spent his entire career in the Southwest. He played safety and punter at New Mexico and coached at UNM, San Diego State, Arizona State and then a 4-year run as head coach at his alma mater.

Gonzales's 2-year run at Arizona State came as defensive coordinator on Herm Edwards's staff in 2018-19

Brennan's Arizona staff is expected to include defensive coordinator Duane Akina, senior San Jose State assistant Zo Carter, and has announced Cullen Carroll as head strength coach after serving in the same role at SJSU.

Sources: LSU moving to bolster offensive staff with former Tulane OC Slade Nagle

The former Tulane offensive coordinator will fill the vacancy created by Mike Denbrock's departure for Notre Dame.

ZACH BARNETT  7 HOURS AGO

Brian Kelly is expected to bolster his offensive staff by hiring Slade Nagle as LSU's tight ends coach, sources told FootballScoop on Wednesday.

Nagle spent the past eight seasons working under Willie Fritz at Tulane as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He was set to take the same role on Fritz's Houston staff before opting to remain in his native Louisiana on Jon Sumrall's staff.

Nagle spent the 2009 season as an administrative assistant working with LSU's special teams. He's spent the majority of his career in the Pelican State, coaching running backs and special teams at his alma mater McNeese for four seasons before coming to Tulane in 2016.

Kelly is re-tooling his offensive staff following Mike Denbrock's departure for Notre Dame.

Joe Sloan and Cortez Hankton will serve as co-offensive coordinators, with Sloan, the quarterbacks coach, serving as the play-caller. The Tigers will look to replace the Heisman Trophy-level production of quarterback Jayden Daniels, along with a first-round pick in wide receiver Malik Nabers.

Arizona's staff gonna be difficult to manage... seems like "too many cooks in the kitchen"

Dino Babers returning to Arizona as offensive coordinator

ZACH BARNETT       2 HOURS AGO

Dino Babers is returning to Arizona as offensive coordinator, sources confirmed to FootballScoop on Thursday.

I'll be his second stint in Tucson. He was there from 1995-2000, serving as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the final three of his six seasons. In 2000, when Babers was U of A's offensive coordinator, he worked above a 27-year-old GA named Brent Brennan.

Arizona represents Babers's first OC appointment in more than 20 years. He left Tucson to serve as Texas A&M's offensive coordinator from 2001-02. It'll be his first job as an assistant since 2011, when he was Baylor's special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach under Art Briles, and before landing the head coaching job at Eastern Illinois. He'd go on to lead EIU, Bowling Green and Syracuse for the past 13 seasons.

The return to Arizona represents the 15th move in the former Hawaii player's well-traveled career. Babers entered coaching at his alma mater in 1984.

Interesting Staff move at Arizona...

Sources: Arizona making significant hire, landing Gaizka Crowley as program's new G.M.

Crowley has previous ties out West from running UNLV personnel, also was a top XOS director

JOHN BRICE    4 HOURS AGO

Just a few years ago, Brent Brennan nearly was Arizona's choice for head coach.

Now that Brennan is atop the Wildcats program, he's working to ensure Arizona keeps momentum and puts key pieces in place for future success -- on and off the field.  To that end, multiple sources tell FootballScoop that Brennan is hiring away Gaizka Crowley from Lance Taylor's Western Michigan program to become Arizona's general manager.

For Crowley, it's an imminent return West after his key work helped overhaul the roster at UNLV before spending the past year helping Taylor set the foundation of his WMU program.

A Florida State graduate with prep coaching experience, Crowley continues to rise rather rapidly through the ranks of collegiate personnel -- in large part because of his excellent background at XOS Digital --  now known as Catapult.

It was with the company now ubiquitous in college football for its video platform that allows in-depth analysis and scouting that Crowley's eye for evaluating personnel began to shine and also when he garnered the attention of college coaches.

Following his time at XOS, Crowley was quickly hired by Southern Illinois to run its personnel department, excelled there to land the UNLV job and then was a key early hire for Taylor as the former Alabama player and top ex-Notre Dame and Louisville assistant filled out his inaugural head coaching staff.

Crowley, now, is returning West for his first opportunity to help guide a Power 5 personnel department.

Missouri hires Corey Batoon away from South Alabama to be its defensive coordinator      January 27, 2024

Quote

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Missouri hired Corey Batoon away from South Alabama to be their defensive coordinator on Saturday, replacing Blake Baker, who left earlier this year for the same position at Southeastern Conference-rival LSU.

Batoon has previous experience in the SEC after spending five years at Ole Miss. He also coached at Florida, Hawaii and Florida Atlantic, among other places, before landing at South Alabama, where he orchestrated one of the nation’s best defenses.

The Jaguars finished 15th in the Football Bowl Subdivision in total defense at 313.2 yards per game.

“Corey has been a part of championship-level teams at every stop,” said Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz, whose team went 11-2 and won the Cotton Bowl this past season. “He’s a veteran coach who’s battle-tested and has an ability to break things down and teach the game at a high level. I’m excited to see him bring those skills and experience to fit with our defensive approach.”

Brian Early (DL) reportedly leaving Houston for Missouri

DOUG SAMUELS        29 MINUTES AGO

Quote

Following an 11-2 season, Eli Drinkwitz recently brought in a new defensive coordinator and now appears set to add one of the most well respected defensive coaches in college football.

Houston defensive line coach Brian Early is leaving to join Missouri's defensive staff, Matt Zenitz shares today.

New Houston head coach Willie Fritz had retained Early as part of his inaugural staff, but Early nows appears to be on the move to the SEC.

Early just wrapped up his sixth season with the Cougars and previously spent five seasons coaching the defensive line at Arkansas State.

At Houston, part of Early's responsibilities were to recruit the top junior college players, and that was an area the program had success bringing in and developing guys like Tank Dell (a 3rd Round pick of the Texans), and defensive backs Gervarrius Owens and Damarion Williams going in the 7th, and 4th rounds, respectively.

With previous stops at Central Arkansas (FCS), Arkansas Monticello (D-II), and a number of Arkansas high schools, Early also has a season of previous SEC experience as a member of the support staff at Arkansas. He was a defensive quality control coach for the Razorbacks in 2013.

At Mizzou, he joins the defensive staff of new defensive coordinator Corey Batoon, who was recently hired from South Alabama to replace Blake Baker, who left for LSU.

Coach Flood not included in this list  🤘

Who are the candidates to become Boston College’s next football coach?

Head football coach Jeff Hafley is leaving Boston College to become the defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers.

BC athletic director Blake James said a national search for his replacement will begin immediately. Here are some possible candidates, listed in alphabetical order:

· Matt Applebaum. If BC wants to lean into its identity as “O-line U” and hire someone already on the staff, Applebaum is the guy. A perk of promoting the offensive line coach is that the Eagles would be more likely to retain the majority of their standout line. That continuity could have a ripple effect on the rest of the roster. Applebaum, 40, doesn’t have any head coaching experience, but he has been a tight ends coach, offensive assistant, and offensive coordinator.

· Kevin Beard. If James wants to hire someone from his previous stop, the University of Miami, Beard could be a prime candidate. Beard, 43, won a championship as a player at Miami and has since coached at Miami, Georgia, Tennessee, Toledo, and Miami again. He’s currently the wide receivers coach there.

· Jason Candle. Candle, 44, has a 65-35 career record as a head coach and is the reigning Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year at Toledo. If BC prefers someone who has a proven track record as a head coach and is looking to make the leap to the Atlantic Coast Conference, Candle could be a viable option.

· Liam Coen. The Kentucky offensive coordinator grew up in Rhode Island and played at UMass. Coen has coached at Brown, Rhode Island, UMass, Maine, and Kentucky. He has interviewed for several NFL offensive coordinator jobs. According to 247Sports, Coen, 38, is an early potential candidate for the BC job.

· Brian Flores. Flores, 42, one of the more prominent candidates on the list, is currently enjoying success as the Vikings’ defensive coordinator. If he’s content in the NFL, that’s where he’ll stay; if he wants to return to his alma mater as head coach, he’d likely be a front-runner. The former Patriots assistant and Dolphins head coach has never coached in the college ranks.

· Al Golden. Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator played for the Patriots in 1992 and coached linebackers at BC from 1997-99. He has head coaching experience at Temple and Miami; however, it’s important to note that it was James who fired him at Miami in 2015. If either side harbors any resentment, that would rule him out; if not, Golden, 54, checks every box.

· Jeff Monken. He has a 105-71 head coaching record at Georgia Southern and Army. He has held the Army job since 2014 and earned Football Bowl Subdivision Coach of the Year honors in 2021. Monken, 56, is one of the most experienced names on the list but doesn’t have any ties to New England.

· Bill O’Brien. While this is unlikely, given that he recently accepted a position as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator, it’s not impossible. O’Brien, 54, grew up in Boston and attended St. John’s Prep. He’s had many stops over the years in both college and the NFL, including multiple stints with the Patriots. He was head coach at Penn State in 2012-13 and with the Texans from 2014-20. If he wants to return to his roots, BC could potentially go that route.

· Steve Shimko. Like Applebaum, BC’s offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach already knows the players, staff, and program well. His promotion theoretically would increase the odds of blossoming star quarterback Thomas Castellanos staying. Shimko, 34, would be younger than the typical head coach, but he has experience coaching a wide variety of positions and has coached with the Seahawks.

· Al Washington. The 39-year-old Notre Dame defensive line coach played defensive tackle at BC from 2002-05. He coached special teams/defensive line, running backs, then special teams/defensive line again at BC from 2012-16, and has since held positions at Cincinnati, Michigan, Ohio State, and Notre Dame. It would be a logical and linear move for both sides. Former BC star Will Blackmon already endorsed Washington, noting: “I’m dead serious.”

Report: Wink Martindale Finalizing Contract as Michigan's New DC Under Sherrone Moore

Screenshot_2024-02-09-09-25-21_kindlephoto-18719732.png.e1e7fd9400030f2891894f93cf22699d.png

ADAM WELLS      FEBRUARY 9, 2024

Quote

New Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore has filled one of the marquee positions on his staff for the 2024 season.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, former New York Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale is finalizing a deal to take the same position with the Wolverines.

When Jim Harbaugh left to become head coach for the Los Angeles Chargers, he took several key members of the Michigan staff with him. Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter joined Harbaugh in Los Angeles.

Special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh, Jim's son, was linked to the Chargers. It appears the 34-year-old will join Mike Macdonald's staff with the Seattle Seahawks. Macdonald was Michigan's defensive coordinator in 2021 before being hired by the Baltimore Ravens.

Moore promoted Kirk Campbell, who has been on the Wolverines' staff since 2022, to offensive coordinator. He is also retaining the title of quarterbacks coach that he held last season.

Martindale is the first major outside hire Moore has made, though he's connected to the Harbaugh family. The 60-year-old worked on John Harbaugh's staff with the Ravens from 2012 to '21, including his last four seasons as defensive coordinator.

After leaving the Ravens following the 2021 season, Martindale was hired by the New York Giants to be their defensive coordinator.

There were reports of a contentious relationship between Martindale and head coach Brian Daboll throughout the 2023 season that ended when Martindale parted ways with the Giants following a disappointing 6-11 record.

When Martindale's hiring becomes official, he will be taking over a Michigan defense that led the nation in points allowed per game (10.4) last season. The Wolverines have ranked in the top 10 nationally in scoring defense in each of the past three seasons.

Kind of a strange move, HC to OC in the same conference without being fired, but it could be that the new landscape of college football led to this. He may not be cut out or doesn’t want to deal with NOL, transfer portal, etc..  I’m not shocked to see coaches that have been around for a while say later with this nonsense. Or the Bucknuts offered him a metric crap-ton of money for less work.

Counterpoint: he has a losing conference record in the Big X after 7 seasons. He's not a terrible coach, and UCLA doesn't have a lot of options better than him, but my guess is he would put up a similar record at UCLA as well.

UCLA has way more buitl in advantages than Minnesota.  And I'm a Gopher fan (pops was a grad).  We just need someone with the fire to WANT to do this.  And I think he does.
