Transfer Cycle 2025-2026 - Sunday, Bloody Sunday

I would like to know, for the guys who came in as 4- and 5-star prospects but never saw much playing time like Owens and Ffffffranch, is it more likely that these dudes who other big programs also pursued are busts or that our staff is so bad at developing talent that lesser players are prioritized in spring, they get to hoard all the opportunity behind the scenes, and that's how come so many touted prospects don't see playing time even when the starters have been pulled?

I haven't yet seen evidence that the guys who portal out of our program go on to prosper, but I will be very interested to see what happens with Owens, Baxter, Ffrench, and the other dudes who had been top HS prospects

Owens was a low four star, he wasn't in the same galaxy as Baxter and Ffrench

I said in an earlier post there should be a total restructure in the organization and it will take a while to get there - NFL model - president - >GM -> head coach. Now I don’t know exactly how college football orgs restructure but having the GM report to the HC, maybe? I’d argue the GM should be and could be the #1 position in the program within a decade.

The situation is fluid. I could guarantee that the rules will change this year and next year when the portal opens, there will be a totally new dynamic.

Personally, I think the move should be a return of freshman football with coaches and games. Freshmen would be on scholarships with schools paying as little or as much as they want to bring in guys. Then as players develop, use the current system but with multi-year contracts.

Very few top prospects should be playing their first year. WR is basically the only position where you can get by on athleticism and a few weeks in the playbook.

And I get that, but surely all the practices and scrimmages were enough for the staff to quantify how badly we want to hold on to these younger players and how hard we would fight to keep them from portaling.

was just thinking through something similar , especially with the raise in scholarship limits or maybe similar to the NFL the scout team becomes more an official group

This seems like a strange portal pitch.

Pro sports teams certainly use it - not surprised it’s made its way to college recruiting.

All this solves is giving you, the fan, insight into if a freshman is developing and worthy of retaining in the offseason. Unfortunately, nobody gives a shit.

They saw enough that Owens and Ffrench were seemingly last on the depth chart for this year. Doesn't really mean they would be busts two years from now. But, yes, coaches should have a good idea on where they are and how much they are worth the effort/$$$.

Skipping 4 pages because wtf, but am I (or really bama fans who are the target audience) to believe that the bama site has heard about the smothers issues and part of their response was to ask our other rb or his agent about it- and the response was that they’d probably ask to be released from their signed deal?

Keep an extra 5 to 10 percent (unless it’s Cal) of your NIL. That’s considerable I’d think.

This is not new. Owens being in the program for a year and still sitting at 3rd string while a transfer newcomer takes mop up duty just means that Owens didn't develop to match his high school rating.

I'm not sure what else you want people to say here.

Hadn't really been in the convo since he visited a week ago

  1. I would watch the games as it would be more of a return to "college" football and I might feel closer to it as it would have given me an opportunity to play at UT when I was younger.

  2. As for college programs, it would make it a little easier to keep guys on campus who are already on campus and it would save schools money on recruiting guys who are just mercenaries and who are going to transfer for more money anyway.

  3. It would bring additional revenue to the school through freshman games.

  4. It would require very little change from the current system as it is more of a natural evolution.

I wouldn’t wish cancer on anyone, but some of you guys are making a compelling argument for me to consider it.

Nothing seems true....

But this made me poke my head over there and it's eerily similar: "Smothers can'trun anyway if don't fix OL," "Coleman would be nice, but we don't need him. We need OL."

I spoke with two agents last night for a while at Chalmers. They showed me their text threads from Brandon Harris - each of these guys reps multiple players currently on the team or were on the team and are in the portal and were not from Lionheart.

What I saw was horrifying. They then proceeded to tell me for 10 minutes straight how much they fucking hate Brandon Harris and that their official opinion is that he is the worst GM all of college sports.

I share this opinion.

These fellas really sound like seasoned pros and not popdick twenty-somethings snowflakes who get their panties in a knot when anyone is a meanie meanie doo doo head to them :eye roll:

With the Minnesota and Iowa LB’s off the board, do we have any info on Ulave?

I’ll do Harris’ job for half his pay.

Things like this ought to be finding their way to the stakeholders in the program such that something is done about it. Whether that is sark on his own (should be some self preservation in action here but alas) or cdc and/or other money forcing him to make a change. If it’s really that bad and obvious.

That's my point. If these dudes turn out to be studs, that reflects very poorly on Sark and the staff. Owens for example, nothing to be ashamed of when the people ahead of you on the depth chart are Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning. Caldwell, though, probably should feel a bit of shame. Is that because Owens was a bust, poorly evaluated, poorly developed, or something else? One thing's for sure, the only guy from the 2024 Texas CFP Semifinal team with a chance at winning a natty is Bert Auburn.

Both of those players are safeties. The LB was from Wisconsin. Uluave is currently visiting us.

Yeah sure, that’s a safe assumption. Both him and flood. We don’t tolerate underperformance at Texas.

It's what message board geniuses would do. I can't speak for Bellmont because I haven't spoken with Connor Stroh's agent.

Sometimes people just bad fits with the system, team, coaches, culture, etc. But I don't think we have lost someone to the portal yet and regretted it in hindsight.

I'm not defending anyone. I'm saying that this isn't the portal of last year where you land somewhere it is meaningful financially because it doesn't matter if schools have collectives or not anymore. Every team has at least a 10M warchest this go around. I can't believe how hard it is for some of you to understand. It's like you haven't been paying attention at all.

To be explicit. Things that worked in 2023 and 2024 simply do not work at all today. Mechanically they were still at least similar to 2022, the numbers got bigger but it was largely the same.

2026 is a complete reset. The rules have changed completely and so has the compensation across the board.

Finkley might end up a late draft pick, but he left because we had Moore+Simmons.

You could also say that Lacy’s development made Owens economically unviable. Does Texas want to spend money on a guy that was surpassed by a younger player? They also are paying a 5 star recruit legit money to sit on the bench this year and develop. Only 1 QB can play at a time. Given the growing concerns about ROI on NIL, I am not sure carrying 4 QBs will be viable

Billy Glasscock before he left for Ole Miss? So that would be 4 semi-finals teams

I think what you’re saying is more programs have money to spend, and are willing to spend it in year 3 of the portal. My first thought at hearing that is “OK, adjust on the fly and outspend the competition”. But I also wonder if Texas a year ago recruiting on “Texas will be preseason #1 w/ Arch the Heisman favorite” is a lot easier than Texas recruiting off the season they just finished. The narrative outside of Texas has changed. If that’s the case, you’ve lost some of the “get me to the NFL” ability you had the last couple of years. At that point, it’s use your considerable financial advantages, and if that’s not enough in this current environment, there’s not many more paths other than re-setting “hope” through a coaching change. Seems to be the natural progression in professional sports which is what we are talking about in the NIL era
