This is a very understandable process playing out. Go to Texas, get a nice number, come back to current school, say "you don't need to meet that number just get close"...done deal.

All the bashing on Sark, Harris, Flood makes it sound like they are just getting played and being stupid for going after all these long shots. In all things sales/deal related, being played (often knowingly) is just part of the game. If being column fodder (to get more $) gives Texas a shot, it's worth playing it through. Worst case, you've forced Mich, Fl, Lou to spend resources retaining their guys. If they didn't have a backup plan, yeah that's dumb. But just going to the next best option seems like an obvious plan? If we end up without some reasonable upgrades at OL/RB/LB when the portal closes, that will suck. But I wouldn't bet on it playing out that way.

We have enough dudes on squad now to play 7 on 7. That’s about it.

What the actual fuck is going on... we went from looking to fill in spots to now a wave of young players transferring out

Bo Barnes sucks, but Washington was proabably always gone. I'll be shocked if Spencer Shannon sticks around too. The staff things Townsend is a stud, and we've got Emaree Winston doing much better early than expected.

As I was saying yesterday it was likely an either/or situation with Kobe Black and Mascoe. I'm happy making that trade but Black wanted to start and he just realistically isn't beating out Phillips, Littleton (if he goes move fully to corner as most expect) and Mascoe. Hopefully they still get something worked out because I think Black has finally turned the corner. No pun intended.

I get Washington and Black. Both appear to have been beaten out by freshmen. Currently, I think Black is the 4th best CB. I was wondering if he would move to star and compete with Mack. Washington is behind Townsend. The Bo Barnes one is tough. He was one of 2 scholarship LBs to play in the bowl .

The Flood of bad news keeps rolling in

you-you-de-niro.gif

We have the worst timing in history when it comes to having a billionaire sugar daddy available to pay our football players.

Texas needs a new GM and a new O-line corch in the worst way.

Based on the on-field results, Flood doesn't appear to be a great scout/talent evaluator, nor does he appear to be a great teacher of the position.

The Bo Barnes portal entry is a red flag, but with a fresh coach in Muschamp on D, I'll reserve judgement for now.

This lack of portal commits, along with this mass exodus of players, has me wondering if Sark & Co. are fully focused & dedicated to the Texas Longhorns, or if there is distraction or hidden NFL interests hindering his current contractual duties. I digress.

Well there goes one of the up green arrows from earlier in this thread.

Washington was never mentioned in that.

He was behind Townsend, Shannon, Masunas and maybe even Winston.

He is probably the least surprising portal entry in the last week.

Welp Sark is a bitch but al least all of our Saturdays are freed up in the fall.

There's a base level of talent that the staff have already let walk, Barnes, Lefau, Moore, Wisner, etc. If you end up in a spot, where "the next best option" isn't an upgrade from what you let walk, then you've failed in the portal. The more we miss, the closer we are to that reality.

When perception of a program sours this drastically and quickly, it's up the HC to simultaneously fix it and reassure everyone he's done so. None of us can do that for him.

A penny for CDC's thoughts right now.

I was talking about this at lunch with a fellow Texas recruiting obsessive.

We both decided that something has to be up with Flood / Sark / the OL room. Putting my homerism aside, this is an excellent program in a great city. We have consistently been putting OL in the NFL since Sark arrived. We have plenty of money and have not been tightfisted in our offers for quality OL. It's tempting to chalk it up to simple incompetence - we put all our eggs in the Michigan basket and it fell through, and we didn't bother tampering with anyone else. But it seems like it's more than that. It seems unlikely that Flood and Sark, both of whom have plenty of experience in this sort of thing and have had success in the past, are just dumb.

I don't mean it as a conspiracy theory or anything. But something stinks about this whole situation. There are just too many quality OL across the CFB landscape for it to be this hard for Texas to bring in a few. Even a dumb coach should be able to land a few without trying that hard.

I think an interesting data point on the struggles so far has been that Texas hasn't lost a single recruitment yet to someone other than the incumbent school. I think it truly shows that the fault lies solely with the staff. Level zero, I know that money is NOT the issue. And I get the argument that some folks won't change jobs and move across the country for a small raise. But Sprague turning down 1.6M to go back to a place that was embroiled in scandal for 900k is disconcerting to say the least

Should just shut the program down and put the money into quidditch.

This insinuates that we don't already have the most NIL galleons invested in the team

To be clear, there’s no true “souring” outside of us message board recruiting losers as of yet.

The “souring” will come in the field next year if we are unable to plug some of these holes over the next week.

They moved JJR to LB for the bowl game and he out snapped Barnes. To my limited eyes, Barnes struggled to run fit for much of the game.

It sucks to miss out on our primary targets, but missing them along with all these guys coming off the books means we have a lot of money and motivation to get quality guys looking for a place to play. The staff just needs to identify the right ones.

The good news is there’s about 4600 players in the transfer portal. 50 of those are from us.

The bad news is none of the 4600 wanna come here

If you tweet this number out, i bet we can find a replacement by the end of the day.

Rumint is. Texas is going to 6 man football this summer

Lulz ... someone named "Scrap" apparently entered the portal.

If Texas misses on Coleman and the Vandy guy ... we'll be left going after ... oh, forget it.

He looked like a freshman out there. Definitely not ready for the speed of the college game. I am just saying guys like Black and Washington were beaten out by younger players, so it makes some sense. All Barnes has to do is turn his head to the left and then the right to see an open path to the field.

I doubt we're the only CFB junkies folks noticing the cascade of misses in Austin, but you're right in that the true results will have to play out on the field. For now, we fans are just wheezing canaries in the coal mine.

yay, another day of losing more than what’s coming in!! We are absolutely dominating this transfer portal thing by waiting in the weeds. Must be some new tech

I guess we are a feeder school now to the big boiiii programs

I would also just not try to tamper with Michigan players in the future. Those guys tend to stick together and regardless of their coaches being dipshits, their players seem to have a good culture and seem to like it there. If we have 1.6 mil to spend on a RT, I don't think we'll need to go that far down the list.

Jordan Washington is in the portal now?

Telling Washington to be fat and slow somewhere else

We are so fucked, we’re to the point of actually needing Mack to go down to Florida and kill himself with all the recruiting.

Wouldn't it be simple game theory for any mid tier OL, LB, RB, WR wanting a raise to enter and await Texas offer, then counter to their original school?

Yep. The trick is making them an offer they can’t refuse (no murder)…..

I’m worried you will take super glue and glue yourself to the tv for maximum focus. you still can’t figure out its past the bitch point? We have a 7 on 7 team right now. You really might glue yourself to the screen…sheesh

24 minutes ago, The_Great_Hornsby said:

I think we are seeing that in action this year. Unless we are willing to go to Tech levels of overspending, it's just easier for them to ask for a match and to stay. And we have been targeting schools with the means to match our offers. That's the problem.

Hard to call it overspending if it's what's required to overcome inertia. And what's this means to match talk? Why not all-in?

Washington has been recruited over three times and any snaps he might have gotten are going to the Michigan St transfer.

Re: Our GM - part of being a GM is knowing what players are actually available and which are using you as leverage. This isn’t recruiting - this is NFL style free agency. Harris thus far looks clueless.

Washington was passed up by Endries, Townsend, Winston, and Shannon. Black got beat out by Phillips and he's not starting over the Rutgers transfer. There's going to be more transfers. I'm surprised 1-2 of Lockett, Ffrench, Terry haven't hit the portal.
