Well that indeed is a hot sports opinion I will give you that.

Think about that statement. You could argue that all of those guys came from OLs that were equal or worse than the Texas OL(bama is the only one you can debate) and that doesnt take into account that Texas could bring in Jesus Christ to come and play WR and at least 40% of the post would bitch about it.

Well Jesus Christ couldnt hit the curveball, so not sure he can catch 50/50 balls. Need tape.

Serious ass question, would Flood have taken Kasey Studdard?

No way he would have taken Dan Neil and probably not Doug Dawson who was only 250 or so after baseball season when he graduated high school. He would have taken Gene Chilton. Studdard is kind of iffy at 6’3” 308 when he graduated from Texas but was probably pretty light when he came to Texas.

I admire your optimism. The only problem with it is that we had the exact same situation last year and didn’t adequately address the OL, and the argument could be made that cost us a national championship last year. So being concerned about the OL is not just two guys from Michigan. And I bet you’re fatter than me.

Bobby didn't say that. That was me.

We literally have had two guys turn us down for less money to stay at Michigan and to go to Ohio State.

Yes, for many the biggest bag is all that matters. But if you have pro aspirations there is a point of diminishing returns. That's what people have been saying about Coleman, but it should be qualified that if Tech comes in with an absurd offer it might be worth doing time in Lubbock instead.

My response was really triggered by the suggestion that Texas was "cheaping out" (for lack of a better term.) That just isn't the case. We've already seen two players take less money than what Texas has offered to play somewhere else, so the issue isn't that Texas isn't paying enough.

In general, we (aka I) hire too quickly and fire too slowly.

I would have a bit more faith in this staff if there was a still a spring portal. Seems like they did most of their work to fill up the biggest weakness last year (DT) in the spring. If they don't get something done in the next week on the OL, what are we looking at? Grad transfers? Woof.

I just want to say one more thing about Flood, who has been bashed enough around here. His lines at Bama were great. He didn't recruit those guys. He inherited them. The ones he did recruit to Bama? It looks a lot like Holmon Wiggins record there at WR (Hi Brocks!). He took the garbage we had here when he arrived and made them serviceable. He didn't fuck up the guys we brought in from the pancake factory. I don't think the guy is a bad coach/technician, but holy fuck he has done zip to indicate he has any sort of acumen at evaluation. I don't trust him to evaluate what's left in the portal. I certainly don't trust his high school evals. We mocked A&M and Jimbo for recruiting cubes for years. Well this mother fucker is a bigger cubist than Pablo fucking Picasso.

You can blame Harris directly for having several meetings in which he is the only staff representation and he walked out thinking the player was good to go, and the player walked out thinking they’d been given an exit interview and then submitted paperwork for the portal. A recent example is Bo Barnes. Plenty of others.

I have met with and spoken to Harris directly. He is an unimpressive buffoon who thinks he’s really smart. He’s not well-liked among players or staff and he’s at Texas because he’s zero threat to Sarkisian’s agenda except when accidentally and actively fucking it up.

When people on this board, usually after signing periods and portal periods when the dust settles and Texas has done well, rush to give Harris praise and passive aggressively make comments about doubters and haters questioning him or Sarkisian, all they’re doing is telling the rest of us that they are know-nothing dunces.

And yes, Sarkisian was happy to see Glasscock go and he’s become one of the best in the entire country. Kiffin, asshole and sociopath that he is, doesn’t give one shit about being questioned by his staff. The right answer wins for him, that’s it. I expect him to do well at LSU accordingly.

Curious - do you think Burton chooses to ignore those issues (presumably because Harris is a source or he doesn't want to step on toes) or does he actually believe his schtick that Harris is doing a great job? Every time I hear him knee jerk defend Harris on livestreams I immediately think "I wonder if CTJ is listening right now."

My hope right now is that after the Bo Barnes debacle Muschamp influences Sark to get rid of Harris because Harris is messing up Muschamp's roster.

Well it is going to be very interesting to see how the Portal closes for us this season. Right now, no matter what factors you use to grade Sark and Co, the grade is not a good one.

What I am a bit concerned with is that the lack of success is now working negatively against us in multiple ways.

1) The unexpected defections at LB for example. 1) Might kids seeing that from the depth chart, they are now starters and deserve starter money? IF you were in a business where there was great scarcity for your position, and you were elevated into a high earning position of the former employee, would you NOT expect comparable compensation? Then we dick around thinking we have some badass on the hook and then the position gets even thinner. Making the existing LB's even more valuable, from a negotiating standpoint.

2) For whatever reason we did not hang onto near as much depth on the team as anyone here expected. I think that's a very fair statement. In sales for example every sales guy wants the giant account. But it's the small and medium accounts (with less competition) that pay the bills day in and day out. The elephant can put you over the top, but if you lose that elephant and don't have enough steady small and medium accounts you get fucked in the end. That is sort of where I see us now. In that it would have been cheap and easy to secure a fair amount of the kids that hit the portal. COMPARATIVELY, to where we are now. Bidding for a smaller and smaller pool of players.

3) We now seems are more desperate for warm bodies than we have been? And that makes us look more desperate. Which again drives up the costs of acquisition in a market with rapidly shrinking supply. With no Spring Portal there is no time for make ups, if we can't close quickly on some warm bodies we better have the most talented group of incoming freshmen we have ever seen to fill the potential gaps.

Now it's possible that we close strong, fill the gaps and have some of the young incoming guys really step up. But right now, I am not in my usual "in Sark I trust" mentality. Mainly because there is no makeup exam, spring portal opening anymore. I hope that my fears are completely unjustified in a week. However, my concerns about retention of existing players is something I think going forward Sark and Co are going to have to get a better handle on. Continuity and Culture are truly the foundation of great teams. Right now we are very weak on the continuity aspect IMHO.

Do you imagine our communications conclude with "you're going to take less money to stay with Michigan? Okay then."

Again, it might be they did, but having this occur across multiple prospects at different schools in a 48-72 hour period?

I've been in a sales for 20 years, and I lose or win deals from time to time that aren't about money, but it's the exception. I have a hard time believing there isn't some opacity with what's being offered by the other schools.

When the portal closes on the 16th that’s our roster for next year. There is no second portal season.

We technically get an extra five days (January 20th-24th) to go after players on the two national title-game teams.

Part of the problem appears to be that other teams garbage looks more appealing than your own garbage - so players that would normally be depth are getting NIL offers at other schools in excess of what Texas or anyone would want to pay for a backup or depth piece. This isn’t new or unusual - NFL fans have watched it happen on their teams forever. The problem is that in college football, with long term contracts non-existent, roster turnover is extreme. So Texas, and others, are left trying to hold on to and replace starters while the rest of the roster walks.

What I’m saying is, muledick.
