Trump and FIFA are made for each other. Not only will FIFA not push back on Trump, I bet Trump finds a way to pull a billion from FIFA.

edit: to be clear, a billion for trump, not for the US.

Yeah, I know. FIFA is as corrupt (or worse) than Trump. They're a match made in heaven.

FIFA being quite possibly the most corrupt sports organization in the world leads me to believe that the World Cup ain't going anywhere and will likely go off mostly without a hitch, few people may end up in El Salvador but compared to all the slave labor that was used to build the stadiums for Qatar in 2022 and whatever funny business went on in Russia in 2018... probably not that big of a deal.

That's a real bitch take.  Have all of the disdain for Trump.  If you like to root against America, move out of the country.

yeah sorry, i'm absolutely rooting against the current iteration of America. blind nationalism in the face of unrestrained destruction, idiocy, cruelty and avarice is for children.

It’s all been for home field advantage. Anyone wearing a Mexico jersey will be detained. Boom home field for USA and the weak ass soccer team they seem to put out there every few years.

I’m fine with the rest of America hosting. I hope the United States itself suffers as much global embarrassment as possible for its shitty decisions.

Telling someone to move out of the country because they say something you don't like is actually the bigger bitch take.

At this point getting canceled might save us from watching our pathetic men's national team shit the bed on home soil:

Half our regular players are taking the summer off — the year before the World Cup.

I think the gold cup game tomorrow is gonna be nuts. I have tickets for Tuesday to Club World Cup at the Rose Bowl. Rayados vs Inter Milan, have those DHS and ICE mfers said they are doing security for that also or is it just Miami?

we’re just crushing it hosting the club world cup one year before the big one:

the incompetency of the USSF, the corruption of soccer, the incompetency and corruption of trump- something historically comical and/or awful is going to define this world cup.

I’ll take everything you can possibly think will go sideways next year will indeed do just that.

"I love America more than any other country in this world, and exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually."

-- James Baldwin

The "if you don't love it here, you can git out" person is not a patriot.  That is the mentality of someone who can't or won't think critically, and worse, someone who doesn't want others to, either.  Blind patriotism is for fools.

As for how Trump affects the World Cup, my main fear is that by then it looks like the best terrorist target ever to a lot of pissed off people.  Which sucks, because I love football and I'd like to go.

Fuck off, Bob.

I'm at least confident that that made you feel better.

It's our collective fault, even if we didn't vote for him.

It's our fault if we don't fix your democracy.

You mean our democracy.

And your logic is flawed. Democracy requires a buy in for, and support of, democracy from all parties.

At the risk of repeating myself, fuck off, Bob.

No it doesn't.  It never has. There are always folks who support all the other forms that are worse.

Own your shit, at least until a revolution starts.  Then you can wash your hands in calm self-rightousness.

As to the subject of this thread, as a chubby mexican, I just pray that Ttump doesn't fuck with Diego Luna.

Again, faulty reasoning. “All parties” is not equivalent to everyone. Just because the US includes a pro-Putin faction which is anti-Constitutional Republic ought not threaten a Republic to which all parties are committed. Republicans opting out of democracy is on them. Every last one of them.

he brings juventus into the oval office and then starts talking about men playing in women’s sports, and asking the players if they think a woman could play for them.

i will never understand how so many tens of millions of americans aren’t embarrassed by this clown.

it's absolutely mind-boggling. and yes, i was surprised at how easily a black man broke them.

it makes me realize how little i actually share with my countrymen. i take solace, however small, in knowing i am on the right side of this history. it's not going to save any of us from the grotesque monsters in charge, but my conscience is clear at (the very) least.

“It was all a surprise to me, honestly. They just told us that we have to go, and I had no choice but to go, so I showed up. I guess it was a cool experience, obviously.  Being in the White House as a first time, it’s always wonderful, but I’m not one for the politics, so it wasn’t that exciting. It was a bit weird. I was caught by surprise when he started about all the politics with Iran and everything. It was kind of like, ‘I just wanna play football, man.'”

— Tim Weah (fourth from left) on his visit to the White House, where a Juventus delegation met with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office. The bulk of the questions during the media availability were not about Juventus or the Club World Cup — the Juventus owner John Elkann, Trump said, is a “friend of mine” — but about whether he will order attacks on Iran. Other topics: the U.S. Civil War — whether it could have been avoided — and travel bans — their impact on the 2026 World Cup. Trump himself brought up the issue of transgender athletes.
