Texas Football 2025 Fall Camp - Kicking the Sonofabitch In

The last time I saw Sark talk about Baxter in an interview, he seemed to go out of his way to mention that Baxter might not be ready until a few weeks in to the season.

If he’s contributing by November I’ll be happy.  I wouldn’t expect much out of him this season.

Not surprising given the severity of his injury. I wouldn’t expect him until after OU or around there.

Who's ready to overanalyze throws against air?

I'm ready to overanalyze the repeated examples of play-action bootleg passes while taking snaps from under center that we're being fed of Arch.  Big time Peyton vibes.

This is also the second time we've seen Manning put a ball on the back corner pylon to CTJ's son.  I'm not entirely sure how you defend that route if Arch can drop a ball in like that to a 6'4" receiver running full speed to the back pylon:

I fully expect the defense to be elite and have never said otherwise. I opted for brevity in my post above but I can go into detail.

I don’t think we’ll force as many turnovers. 22 INTs last year was the most we’ve had in 15 years (side note: 25 in 14 games in 2009 is absurd). We had 16 twice since then with a typical number being 10-15 (more games now means a slight uptick in expected number of course). Taaffe is the only DB that has shown similar to instincts to Barron and Mukuba, which can be developed but is also something that will often show immediately in the elite guys (like Barron in 2022).

Beyond our personnel, this defense could also be worse statistically without an actual drop in quality due to the step up in QB play we’re likely to see this year. And I don’t mean that to take away anything from last year’s defense. They were awesome. I can’t stress enough that this is not a ‘they ain’t played nobody’ post. We just might not get the same gifts from Sayin and Lagway that we got from literal walk-ons a year ago.

Of course there are reasons for optimism. Atticus mentioned McDonald and Williams. I really like both of them. Williams particularly seems like a guy that creates turnovers, including fumbles. I still remember Sark talking him up as a future first rounder in his ‘23 signing day press conference and he’s been great when he’s played. I’d add Hill and Lefau in there as well. Jaylan Ford led the team in INTs in 2022 because he was so good at pass drops. Hill and Lefau had 1 each last year and could easily combine for a couple more due to continued improvements in drops (Hill) and increased playing time (Lefau).

Point is, we’re going to develop guys and have an awesome defense but I’m expecting the INT number to drop a bit towards the 1/game number, which is still good.

And to the other end of the turnover and field position discussion, our defense stands to benefit from fewer short fields due to our own turnovers, missed field goals, and blocked/fake punts. It was pretty incredible how well the defense held up when put into bad situations last year.

We'll force more turnover because QBs are going to be getting rid of the ball before the play calls for it.  And because continued pressure and hits will force fumbles from said QBs.  Our DTs are going to be better than last year.  We don't have any questionable talents like we did going into last year.  Alex January is going to be better (before he's through) than Collins, Broughton and anyone not named Sweat and Murphy.  And I'm not positive on that.  I shit you not, we're going to terrify offenses this season.   The only game I think we might lose is at tOSU, just because it's the first game.  And we probably win that one.  And then Katie bar the door.

We have a coach and qb who both love deep shots.  It's going to happen a lot.  Sark has a whole year of not being able to take them them pent up inside.

Littleton getting all first-team nickel reps is super interesting. He’s like 2022 Guilbeau beating out Barron. Also heard Cunningham ran with DBs, I thought dude was going to bulk up 20 pounds by fall camp.

NOTES

– Freshmen DB Jonah Williams and freshman CB Kade Phillips were not fully active in the first practice of fall camp. They were mostly bystanders in the period that media was able to view.

– I thought S Derek Williams Jr. was limited a bit as well. He is still sporting a big brace on his knee as he returns back from an ACL. Williams was on the field but probably closer to 75% than full speed in my opinion.

– RB CJ Baxter was also sporting a big brace on his right knee. Baxter worked in the team drills and looked to be a full participant as far as I could tell.

– I was blown away watching DL Josiah Sharma in pads. He was without question the largest defensive lineman from a physical standpoint. He also was moving incredibly well. Stock definitely rising off of the first watch for the freshman from California.

– During the punt portion, I pulled out my stop watch for hang times on new P Jack Bouwmeester. @Bobby Burton and I looked at each other after a couple of boomers in awe.

1st Punt: 4.78

2nd Punt: 4.75

3rd Punt: 4.91

The first group of gunners I noticed were Warren Roberson and Ryan Niblett. Xaiver Filsaime, Tre Wisner, DeAndre Moore, Graceson Littleton all factored into the rotation as well.

– It was Michael Taaffe who broke out the team for the first practice of the spring after warmups and stretch lines.

I like what I saw from the Texas quarterbacks. Trey Owens had a few nice passes, KJ Lacey received some praise from the Texas coaching staff and new transfer QB Matthew Caldwell can really spin it as well. The ball looks different coming off his hand than the two others.

But of course, all attention goes to Arch Manning in these situations. Manning undisputedly is the heart beat of the offense. Several times you can hear Arch let out a "Let's Go!" after another quarterback connected with a WR to end a drill. Often times put his hands up replicating a touchdown signal as well. He was fired up to be back on the practice field.

– New TE Jack Endries received some run with the first team as media was asked to leave the field.

– As for freshman LT Nick Brooks, I imagine he will work from behind the line to start fall camp, much like the remainder of the freshman in fall camp, but even more so after his offseason commotion.

***

Texas added a cooling pod in between the Bubble and the practice field. I noticed the running back unit stopped inside in between practice periods to cool off before heading back down to the field for a team period. A couple of Texas spokesmen said the training staff also has crates of Gatorade and fruits cut up for water periods.

Again, it was probably 99º on the afternoon for day one.

I saw a lot of Texas players changing cleats or cutting the tape off of their ankles due to the heat as well.

Not having to watch Silas Bolden test my blood pressure 4-5 times a game is one of the things I'm most looking forward to this season. When that motherfucker is completely done with football we're going to we're going to find out he's moved onto high wiring between sky scrapers and wrestling alligators just for shits and grins.

He never lost one all season that I can remember. Wish we had him back this year. Our main problem on both return units is we had one of the worst blocking units in the country. Even Houston and Oregon St routinely gave those guys much better blocking than we ever did at any point last season. That was ridiculously disappointing

I was assuming that was a case of making the transfer "earn" his spot, similar to Shannon running out at first team (if you can call what he does running).

Spencer Shannon broke 5.0 in the 40 during summer drills, sir. Let’s see you approach that.

All this comment says to me is that "red zone scoring percentage" expressed as a ranking is not a useful metric for evaluating an offense.

Would you rather have Texas' offense from 2021 / 2022, or Texas' offense from 2023 / 2024? I know which one I prefer.

If the data tells you something useful then it's great. If it tells you something you know to be bullshit, then it's just more noise.

It's pretty useful in determining how many TDs you score when you're in the red zone

Day One Impressions:

- Michael Taaffe broke the team down to start practice. Last year, it was Quinn Ewers on day one and Barryn Sorrell on day two.

- Last year, we would have graded the punting unit a D or so. With the new punter, Texas has a chance to get a A or A+. More distance, significantly more hang time. It is literally like the difference between daylight and dark. Texas now has a punter with an NFL caliber leg.

- Josiah Sharma has a chance to be a special player at Texas.

- Emaree Winston has a tremendous catch radius.

- Jack Endries is well put together physically, but he is not physically imposing. Good hands, exacting route runner.

- Emmett Mosley looks the part physically. He looks more like a junior or senior than a true sophomore. Good hands.

- I like the improvement I saw from Michael Terry, Jamie Ffrench and Kaliq Lockett. They almost looked out of place in the spring. Not anymore. They have upped their game IMO.

- DeAndre Moore was first team punt returner, followed by Daylan McCutcheon, who was followed by Ryan Niblett.

- Alex January, Cole Brevard and Maraad Watson look ready. Today. Impressive conditioning for big guys for first day of practice in this heat.

- Levon Johnson was held out of much of practice with what looked like a sprained left ankle that was heavily taped.

- Both Kade Phillips and Jonah Williams were held out. Steve Sarkisian said in his post practice availability that both had hamstring tweaks that they are monitoring.

- My favorite plays of practice were the long throws from Arch. The deep ball will be a fundamental part of 2025 unlike any previous year under Sark. Or really any Texas coach.

RE: Baxter I think we’ll be fine. He’d be nice to have against fOSU and Florida. I hope he’s back by OU, but Gibson probably gives Texas 85% of what Baxter does.

This is what I wanted to hear regarding Baxter. Hope he continues to get stronger during the course of the 3rd and 4th games of the season.

Who’s the Golden this year? I dont think there is one. That’s the ceiling on the offense.

I think Arch’s legs will solve most of our redzone issues.

The defense doesn’t have a ceiling in my opinion.
