I've watched a lot of Caleb Downs the last couple of years, both at Bama and OSU.

To me he's just an average future NFL hall of fame safety. Nothing special.

This guy may have downs^^

I think Downs is one of the best defenders in CFB without question. That said, part of why Barron won the Thorpe is because Downs’ numbers were trash. He changes games and that sometimes doesn’t show up in the counting stats, but you figure he’d stumble into a few more than zilch in some categories.

Note: this predates the playoff run and I haven’t looked to see how those games may have changed his numbers. Pre-playoffs, he had a bunch of tackles and little else.

Idk sure felt like he changed the game when he prevented us from going to a national championship

No doubt he's a great player, but you can also chalk up our offensive ineptitude on a lot of things. But I would have him top 3, no doubt. He'll be a top 8 pick when the draft comes. He can cover in space, but what I meant by saying he's not a game changer is just that he's not constantly trying to murder the QB coming off the edge, which makes the secondaries job much easier.

Practice notes from today (IT)

Spoiler

Texas Football was back at work on Monday morning with a (shoulder) padded practice and eagerness to jumpstart Week 2 of fall camp.

Ohio State is a few weeks away, but Texas is still focusing on competition at most spots and trying to find the right mix on a loaded defensive roster. Other than all of this being prep for the opener, they haven’t specifically prepped Ohio State yet, at least not to IT’s knowledge.

Speaking of the defense, PK’s side of the ball had a really good day in pass defense.

A handful of passes tipped at the line of scrimmage resulted in turnovers. Anthony Hill had a pick of Arch Manning. Cornerbacks Kobe Black and Santana Wilson also had interceptions. Per multiple sources, after a strong summer, Black is shining in the secondary. In a continuation of spring ball, Wilson has a knack for finding the ball.

In addition, Michael Taaffe and Malik Muhammad had interceptions in 7 on 7.

Colton Vasek got work with the ones when Colin Simmons went out. So, Vasek played Buck. They know what they have in Simmons.

Graceson Littleton and Wardell Mack were at Star today. No Michael Taaffe. IT asked a source if Jaylon Guilbeau could return to Star. “We’ll see. Kobe Black is playing really well. Warren Roberson, too.”

On the offensive side, not the best day for the signal-callers but the offense did a solid job running the ball. Tre Wisner had a good day after missing the previous practice and DJ Campbell also returned.

Jaydon Chatman had a strong day at LT. Nick Brooks was solid at RT, but it’s clearly Brandon Baker‘s spot. Baker is getting better each practice per a different source than the one that was high on him recently. Nice confirmation there. Obviously tackle is extremely important, especially in light of the loss of Andre Cojoe.

With the end of the Jake Majors era at center, Cole Hutson and Connor Robertson are both ready to go at the position. It’s becoming increasingly obvious how valuable Hutson is to the OL and team. His ability to fill in at guard is important but we’ve even heard he could be an emergency tackle. Robertson’s growth would make it possible to move Hutson if need be.

Another bright spot on offense was Emaree Winston who made a few big plays. Smart, savvy, and solid open field player. Good route runner thanks to good footwork.

They had DeAndre Moore in Wingo’s spot and Emmett Moslely and Daylan McCutcheon splitting reps in the slot. Parker Livingstone continues to be the main field receiver.

The backup quarterback spot remains in the hands of Trey Owens but he is being pushed by Troy transfer Matthew Caldwell. They had offsetting picks today. Our source indicated Caldwell is good and it’s making Owens and KJ Lacey up their game, on and off the field. Owens is responding positively.

Ryan Wingo didn’t return to practice as expected. We’ll see if that changes on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s practice is at 3:00 PM. Steve Sarkisian will be available afterwards.

I've mentioned it before, but we are in such an odd roster cycle along the OL. Hutson, Goosby, Neto, Cojoe, Chatman, Robertson and Campbell are all in at least their 3rd year in the program, but a handful of them are pretty much complete unknowns.

I wonder if Neto or Baker (or Cojoe) would have bounced to the portal if the staff brought in another proven player at guard or tackle. That trade-off may have helped us in the short run, but we would still be facing the same depth questions we have today.

The 2022 OL class was awesome, but choosing to only take 3 true tackles (Goosby, Payton Kirkland and Baker) in the 2023 and 2024 classes is hurting us badly right now. Chatman and Cojoe felt like coinflips to stick at tackle if everything went right with their development.  It was pretty well known heading into the 2023 season that Banks was going to be 3-and-done, Agbo was going to struggle to ever get on the field here, and Williams was a promising wildcard with the potential to be a 3-year player. That should have increased the urgency to get another tackle or two in the pipeline in the 24/25 classes.

I don't think many programs are walking around with amazing tackle depth in the era we are in, but we do feel a guy or two thinner than we should be, and I would probably say that even if Cojoe were healthy.

Only taking 3 OL in 2024 was a fuck up, IMO. Looking at our offer list for that cycle, I think the other guy we wanted was DeAndre Carter out of CA that ended up at Auburn. Don't remember what the story was there. Needs to be 4+ bodies every year like clockwork, ideally 5 if they can find good ones.

I heard he has cement in his cleats. I would try to cross train him though. I think Chatman could start at tackle for quite a few teams in this league, he’s athletic and has a nasty streak. Brooks is supposedly solid, but Freshman typically get QBs killed.

I think it’s been mentioned by some 9.95ers he might be a year away but the staff is still high on him. Same with Kibble.

Taking only 3 in that class was an unnecessary risk, especially following a developmental class in 2023 where they took Payton Kirkland as the second tackle take and the odds that kid would actually stick around to develop were always around 0%.

No, at 6'7" 360+ he desont have the feet (amongst other traits) to be a tackle. He's a big ass road grader guard and that's ok, seems Flood is ok with it too.

There isn't really even clear evidence that those huge braces make a real difference, sadly. One key reason is apparently that rotational stresses are frequently a major if not the major factor in failure of the ACL.

Definitely the major factor.  Outside of direct contact, most ACL tears (especially in women’s sports) are plant and turns.

Tuesday - Bobby

Spoiler

Tuesday

Since the inception of the coaches poll, Texas has never begun the season as the no. 1 team in the country.

Texas received 28 first place votes. Ohio State, who ranked no. 2, received 20.

Penn State (14), Georgia (3) and Clemson (2) were the only other teams garnering first-place votes.

Here’s the entire list.

https://sportsdata.usatoday.com/football/ncaaf/coaches-poll

**

These rankings really only tell us two things:

1. The expectations other coaches (and SIDs) have for teams in 2025.

2. The respect of the programs at the very, very top.

**

If this list is an accurate assessment of pre-season belief in each team across the country, we should really be talking about a top 9, instead of a top 10 or top 25.

Look at the overall point totals. There is a huge gap in expectations between the first nine schools on this list and the 10th and below.

Notre Dame, Oregon, Bama and LSU join the top 9. Yet there are more than 200 points worth of difference between no. 9 LSU and no. 10 Miami.

It’s such a big difference that it’s almost the same amount between nos. 1 and 5 as it is nos. 9 and 10.

All this to say, there are really nine teams who I believe are genuinely “expected” to make the college football playoffs. Texas, obviously, is one of those.

**

The loss of Andre Cojoe is significant. Back-up offensive linemen, especially ones with experience inside the program, are very valuable.

Cojoe’s unfortunate injury reveals a thin depth chart at tackle. The only back-up with beyond one semester of experience on campus is Jaydon Chatman.

Sure, Nick Brooks is doing great things.

But let’s remember, this is already a “new” offensive line heading into the season. Brooks, while an outstanding talent, would be yet another new face that must be counted on.

It’s a tough loss for Texas.

The Horns surely can not afford to lose another tackle.

**

Jonah Williams is back on the practice field and said to be full go. Williams is working with special teams and at safety.

I think we can comfortably surmise that one of them was the guy who was severely dehydrated. Bobby wouldn’t say who that was at the time.

I have heard from multiple people that Williams’ hamstring continues to be a bugaboo of his carrying over from the spring. I hope he can keep it loose from here.

Flood has not taken a lot of true left tackles, at least according to the industry "professionals". Goosby is probably the last true tackle that Flood has taken. He is a size queen. Lot of RT/Guard combo type players. Keep in mind I believe that NFL RT is more than capable of playing LT in college and even some guard/centers can work.

Proper hydration and fueling for elite athletes is “taking care of your body.” I wouldn’t read too much into it. As much as we make fun of Herman for his pee chart, it was correct. The labeled statements were just poorly done.

Yeah, they’ve missed five days or so at this point. That should tell you it was clinically significant, even if it’s just precautionary at this point. I've seen patients get rhabdo or heat stroke just by being outside for too long under poor hydration and mild exertion. Serious dehydration is not hard to manifest in extreme heat and humidity like they were in, especially under intense physical exertion.

Also, "personal issue" is often a guise in sports for "medical issue." Of course, I'm just speculating, but this is a pretty simple philosophical razor here. I'm with @closetojumping on this one.
