Beto is a great "town hall" type speaker when he can move around and vibe off energy and spin his yarns (because he does talk around a bunch of stuff before landing on his points a lot like in the kneeling video), but the debates with the bright lights behind a lectern with a finite amount of time doesn't suit him and his charm/style. Either that or maybe he is confident pontificating to Texas Southern students but the career politicians can be a bit scary to outsiders/mavericks without the killer "political" instinct. He should definitely take some coaching on the public speaking stuff.

Qft.

Beto moves too much. He needs to slow down and stand still. He also needs to address the danger of bumper-sticker type slogans. Ted’s discussion of civility was laughable at best.

Beto is a nice guy and a good man and so he will lose. We will get more Ted Cruz and like it.

There’s the troll we’ve all come to expect. Can’t even troll without the dig on the HBCU. Well done.

Beto crisscrossed the state speaking on an a variety of colleges campuses both large and small. What made you decide to focus on his interaction with TSU students?

I thought Beto represented himself well with confident, calm, measured responses and had some nice digs at his opponent.

Ted Cruz was a spastic, disingenuous, nervous wreck who stroked the conservative snowflake's fears with standard GOP rhetoric.  And in his final sign of disrespect for Republicans' intelligence, ended the debate saying he would be the choice of hope over fear.

Advantage Cruz.

Cruz is the clear winner of this one. Beto just isn’t willing to go for the throat.

I missed the debate but that is the sense I am getting from the random clips and the various internet takes out there. I am glad Beto went after him a little bit this time around but it seems forced/awkward when he does. Which is weird because I have no doubt that he believes Ted Cruz is a massive sack of shit just as much as millions of Texans do, yet it seems like he doesn't want to be going there. Maybe he doesn't want to HAVE to go there. Whatever it is, it seems off.

The good thing here is I really doubt anything in this debate is going to inspire any Cruz sympathizers to get to the polls. Conversely, lighting up the Twitterverse and Cruz making an ass of himself with the non-political question (not sure if funny or sad? whynotboth.gif) may give some younger, easily distracted Beto leans that were questionable the extra nudge by keeping it fresh in mind. All about turnout at this point anyway.

I’ve been trying to find some good Ted Cruz highlights for balance but whoever operates Cruz’s twitter feed fucking sucks.  He’s probably off watching porn again.

He needs to keep on talking about his lying, that was beautiful.

as someone said, he needs to be more still and iron out the point slowly, remember your dealing with idiots voters here so stay simple

Cruz posts tweets where you can click a "#ChooseCruz" button and it vomits out some bullshit from your account automatically.  That's what you're seeing.  The time when there were a fuckton of them at 3 in the morning was a bit more believable as "this is a russian troll farm" rather than just run of the mill dumbasses, which is what this likely is.

Beto is a natural on the campaign trail, he does seem to get a little jittery in other events.  The last debate certainly, at times in this one, and even on Ellen, you could see the nerves a bit.  I'm not going to pretend like I can judge this debate impartially, or that it matters even a little bit, but Cruz fucked up more than Beto and Beto got some good digs in.  I don't see this one as being a victory or a loss from either camp (mostly because we are at a point where people look at the same thing and see entirely different things), but not sure how this would have been a big Cruz victory.

I think it's a little bit nerves on camera and mostly anxiety trying to get his message across in 60 - 90 seconds. In long form he eviscerates Cruz, short form he looks like he's running at 1.5 speed. Beto isn't good at sound bites. Voters can't understand things that are longer than sound bites.

I'm getting the same vibe from this race I got from Kerry in '04. There is so much delusion among my liberal brethren and sestren, but these are people who never leave their bubbles online or in real life. On the west side in Houston the Cruz voters start where the Heights and Montrose end. City of Bellaire is full of 'em. Middle-middle class 'hoods like Westbury and Meyerland too. And that shit gets even redder the farther west you go, all the way to Austin and San Antonio.

These Bubble People say Beto trounces and "destroys" Cruz at every debate. Of course they think he does. And in a rational world full of thinking people, that would be the case. Unfortunately that is not the world Texans live in right now, and the only way Beto could beat Cruz would be for Cruz to sodomize a blue-eyed child on TV. Maybe that would do it...Maybe not.

Man, I think I will have to abandon my Facebook feed for weeks after Beto goes down -- the wailing and flailing and rending of garments is gonna fucking blow. There are about 100 people on there who will probably need to be put on suicide watch and I am only half-joking.

God I hope I am wrong, but I could see this train coming with Bush in 04 and I even saw it very late with Trump in 16. When 60 Minutes did that town hall with those union stiffs in Ohio and they were all voting Trump I knew Hillary had blown it. Election Night was not a shocker.

Texas will literally be Nazi Germany and everything is rigged if Cruz wins. (According to FB and Reddit)

Exactly my point if you read my post, he’s awesome at the high energy, walking the stage and stadium tour. He’s like the band that is awesome for stadiums and arenas but might not be best suited for a low key venue or something.

Anyways I said TSU because wasn’t that his last stop on the college tour? I saw someone post about it just last week I thought, so I thought it was the most topical college to point out.

This. Well said. Beto just needs some minor tweaks and coaching on strong, pithy hits. The long and drawn out stuff is good when it’s just you on stage and your audience is intelligent and can follow you, but not for Idiocracy voters

No way anyone can say this was a big Cruz victory, I think people are hoping/needing Beto to be perfect and when he’s not there are lots of minor criticisms. But also, it’s a good sign that the criticisms are so minor as to be ticky tack like he deals with a bit of nerves or whatever. It’s like when a football team needs to not only win but have style points to get into the playoffs in the eyes of the pollsters.

Beto's chances hinge mostly entirely on a huge surge of voters (nationwide) that negate the polling, and probably still then needs a bit of help from.... markets shitting the bed, Trump having another Helsinki moment with the Saudi crisis or whatever other thing that comes up, and (not going to happen) maybe some Mueller shit popping up in the next few weeks.

He's very close. Nate Silver was in an article a day or two ago talking about how the media is fucking no up polling again. In his model, Beto went from 1 in 3 chance to a 1 in 5 chance in the last month or so. That's not that huge of a change but the media narrative has been Beto is done.

What is 7 points in terms of votes?

I agree, but... HRC was a terrible candidate and the conservatives hate her so the Republicans - like always came out and voted. That source of votes is reliable but it’s also largely tapped out. We have 1.6 million newly registered voters and we have swells of people coming to rallies. They won’t all vote for Beto and not all attendees will even vote at all but I do think his formula is clear and it can work. He’s said he’s going after the non-voters - and with Texas at the bottom of turn out he has a lot to work with. Registration drives, young people, and an army of GOTV folks and probably including on campus machines he really could do this with the cash he has. The moment voting for Beto and getting that sticker becomes cool on campus it’s going to go viral. His rallies on campus show the potential and he might do it. And meanwhile folks talk about the liberal bubble but the real battleground with adults is in the red suburbs outside the blue cities. Lakeway and surrounding areas are a good example - it’s 50/50 here and 10 years ago it was all GWB country. Beto and the Dems are making inroads in reliably red parts of Texas either through attrition, migration from blue states or even changing hearts and minds and even then only if bc Cruz, Trump and the others are such turn offs. So what I disagree with is the need for a Trump gaff or failure or some outside cause. Beto has the cash and has invested in the game plan enough that it’s either going to work or it won’t but I do think the outcome was determined weeks or even months ago as the strategy and implementation plan was finalized. I think as long as he’s within 5-6% in polls his plan can work. I don’t know if it will, and I’m not going to predict bc if it works it will be entirely unpredictable though in hindsight totally clear. If he loses it will be the same narrative olds vs youngs, fear tactics, Texas is reliably red and all of that.

How is this even a race? Cruz is a poor man's max headroom running against a flesh and blood real person.

Maybe it's the whole vampire/zombie craze going on.

he'll raise your taxes, increase regulations, socialize medicine, OPEN THE BORDERS, soft on crime, legalize drugs and take away your guns.

Isn't that the standard Republican response to everything?

love y'all for trying to talk me off the edge.

given it was a tuesday night debate, I think a big victory for Beto out of that is the clip of big laughs from the audience as he points out the hypocrisy of Cruz talking about a partisan circus given Cruz' last 6 years in Congress.

Saw Beto’s first negative ad against Ted this morning. It’s him talking about Ted wanting to limit access to healthcare.

EVERYBODY. TALK. ABOUT. HEATHCARE.

Over and over and over and over.

It's consistently the #1 or #2 issue among people likely to vote in 2018.
