btw, i have it on very good authority that giving paid time off to go vote is some sort of that scary socialism / communism stuff! i bet it started in California or NYC!!! cause thats where socialism was born.

Well I don't agree with Beto and his socialism. He has no substance. Most Texans agree with this. LBJ was one of the worst presidents in history because of the mess that he created with the Great Society. Welfare has had a very detrimental effect on this nation. Whatever. Everyone has their opinion. God Bless whatever side you are on.
I don't agree with the canadian, so i guess we're even

I definitely would. But watching my home state become progressive over the next 30 years will be a lot more satisfying than moving elsewhere.

It will probably happen unfortunately with all the Californians moving here. It's getting crazy out there. Sadly.

That, my friends, is the problem with today’s “conservatives.”

Got to get back to the Cowboy game. Half is over. God Bless all, no matter what side you are on. We are Americans after all. We just don't all agree.

I’d still like to hear why being progressive is sad. Don’t deflect and run away now.

OK, since we seem to have run him off after these questions, I’ll go.

Progressive means being open to (and maybe even accepting of) ideas, people and cultures unlike your own.  But no, the only people who matter are white, ostensibly straight Christians. Anything else is terrifying!

That’s what the Republican Party has become, or maybe always has been during my lifetime.  Shame on me that I didn’t figure that out until I was in my late 20’s about a decade ago.

And yeah, I’m a straight white Christian whose parents have never voted anything but Republican. I used to vote straight R as well, until I started thinking for myself, and listening to the viewpoints of others that didn’t look like me (or, more accurately, an older version of me at the time).

The insult questioning the Americanness or the Texas bonafides of a liberal, progressive, or non-Republican is one of the oldest, most unoriginal, and idiotic plays in their book. Personally, I like how that script has flipped with Cruz and Trump for a change.

No thanks to LBJ. You can thank good ol Ronnie Reagan for ending the Cold War.  Hey if you think it's right for people to pop out kids and live off the government then that is your opinion. If you think it's ok for the U.S to pay for medical care and support illegal aliens then that is your problem.

Negged for distorting history and the present. Lying. A lot of people began to escape poverty under LBJ. A lot of black people found it easier to vote. Hunger in America was addressed.

Ronald Reagan wasn't worth a cup of the sweat off of LBJ's balls. Reagan's smiling avuncular face was the curtain stretched across the hate engine we're dealing with today. Limbaugh, Atwater, Stone, Manafort, and Ailes flourished under his rosy sun. President Dumbass didn't even know it was going on.

My state's great embarrassment is going for a phony Texas looking guy on a horse who didn't know his ass from his dick but could read lines like a high lever B movie actor. This country of morons lapped it up like a dog laps up vomit. It was the beginning of this slide.

LBJ's bunghole needed room. You could tell he was an awesome politician and can extrapolate so much just by listening to that 2 minute youtube clip. That era of politics is fascinating and one of my favorite politicians to hear stories about is Ann Richards. Also, I love Bill Clinton and think he is the best President we've had in my liftime. But I also think Obama was a damn fine one and history will look kind on him. Also, I think George W. has really grown on me and I appreciate the heck out of him.

I guess what I'm saying is, this era of politics is like when WWF was in the Attitude Era and I miss the good ole days. Make America(n Politics) Great Again.

Speaking of Reagan, he is pretty much the opposite of the modern day Trumpkin GOP

Give me a fucking break.  It took the GOP to pass the Civil Rights Act. The only reason LBJ pushed the CRA was this statement

“I'll have them niggers voting Democratic for the next two hundred years”. [Said to two governors regarding the Civil Rights Act of 1964, according to then-Air Force One steward Robert MacMillan]

LBJ was a fucking, corupt, racist pig and the fact you idolize that POS speaks volumes about your ignorance

Abbott commuted the death penalty of somebody in Fort Bend County who murdered his parents or something, and it pissed a whole lot of people off.  I have relatives who voted for Trump, who swore to vote against Abbott for it.  When it happened, a bunch of people flipped out on Facebook about him commuting the sentence, claiming that Abbott was paid off, etc.

That’s a very un-Abbott thing to do. What’s the back story?

Hi I’m a 6th generation Texan with a degree in Government, so I feel qualified to say that you don’t have a firm grasp on some key concepts.

I bet you like your middle class welfare, though. You know, the kind you don't know about or conveniently forget about. You should thank the government for helping you get where you are in life.

Yea LBJ was a racist. That’s true. He also did more to advance civil rights in this country than any president not named Lincoln. The fact that you dispute that and speaks volumes about your ignorance.

Oh and just an fyi, Lincoln was racist too. It’s possible to understand that people are flawed but sometimes make the right decisions. Thankfully people like Lincoln and LBJ did the right thing despite their abhorrent views.

LBJ realized he would lose the South for decades. He is quoted as saying so. He chose to the right thing.

And turn off your hate radio and trying reading a book by an author not named DeSouza or Maltin. They're pandering ideologues.

I already did. And the GOP wasn’t exactly lock step. Their southern congressman weren’t in favor of the civil rights act and voted against it. The breakdown of the voting is pretty clearly based on union states vs confederate states

https://www.texastribune.org/2018/02/22/texas-gov-greg-abbott-thomas-whitaker-death-sentence/

Quote

More than 10 years had passed and nearly 150 people had been executed since a Texas governor last spared an inmate from a death sentence.

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott broke that streak at the last minute Thursdaywhen he accepted the state parole board’s rare and unanimous recommendation to grant clemency for death row inmate Thomas Whitaker. Abbott's order came down less than an hour before Whitaker's scheduled execution. Whitaker was set to die for the 2003 murders of his mother and brother in Fort Bend County.

..

Abbott, a staunch supporter of the death penalty, said he granted clemency for Whitaker for many reasons: The triggerman in the murders got a lesser sentence; his father, a victim of the crime, passionately opposed the execution, and Whitaker had voluntarily waived all claims to parole in exchange, meaning he will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Quote

Whitaker, 38, planned the murders of his family with his roommate, Chris Brashear, who shot the murder victims and Whitaker’s father, Kent, as they all came home from dinner one evening. The roommates had planned the murders to get inheritance money.

He was sentenced to death in the murders in 2007, despite pleas for a life sentence from his father, who survived a gunshot wound to the chest in the shooting. The prosecutor rejected a guilty plea offer because he said Whitaker wasn't remorseful and was being manipulative. Brashear got a life sentence and is eligible for parole in 2035.

Not sure why so many people got pissed, but it was a thing around there.   Maybe the family was well-known.
