A few team notes from OB

* After several conversations with people behind the scenes, I sensed a lot of positivity and optimism that Texas would play about as close to a complete game as possible on Saturday. I was told that Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian challenged his players to improve in every area this week, and his team responded accordingly.

* I was also told that Sarkisian “chewed their asses out” this week. From what I could gather, it sounded like Sarkisian channeled his inner Nick Saban and went “old school” during practices.

* This has been a week of accountability during practice. One person told me that too many units have underperformed and were seemingly waiting for Arch Manning to bail them out. I was told that every unit needs to step up on Saturday.

* Alex Dunlap recently questioned if Derek Williams has officially handed the torch over to Xavier Filsaime. I was told that Filsaime has seemingly beaten out Williams for that spot.

* I asked about receiver Ryan Wingo, and those close to the situation believe he is putting too much pressure on himself. They believe that if Wingo can mentally relax and stop pressing, he will reach his full potential.

* The same applies to Colin Simmons. One person said Simmons is “too excited and amped up.” He is another player on this roster with a high ceiling, and the staff wants him to mentally relax and not press.

* Based on my conversations this week, I would be surprised if we saw Texas freshman safety Jonah Williams anytime soon. He is still recovering, and Sarkisian is not going to rush him back until he is ready to fully participate.

* I was told that the staff is excited about Justus Terry’s future at Texas. For now, Terry is not big enough to play on the inside. According to Alex Dunlap, Terry had seven snaps against San Jose State. It appears Terry will benefit from another offseason with Texas strength and conditioning coach Torre Becton to prepare for a permanent move inside.

* One person told me that Daylan McCutcheon is one of the smartest and most instinctive freshman receivers some members of this staff have seen. That is one of the reasons why McCutcheon is ahead of the other freshman receivers from the 2025 class.

UTEP sucks, but covering a 41.5 point spread while missing 5-6 starters would be solid.

The offense taking a step forward without Moore, Wisner, Mosley, and a potentially limited Endries would be encouraging regardless of the opponent.

Covering spreads like this generally depend on how motivated the coach is. Is he Kiffin/Franklin and cares about covering, is he Kirby Smart and doesn't want to embarrass overmatched teams, or is it a staff that's just working on shit?

Massive line swing. Spread is down from -41.5 to -40.5 today.

That's hardly a massive line swing. Doesn't even cross a key number

Looking to see better effort from Collin Simmons rushing on the edge and Anthony Hill absolutely annihilating receivers over the middle. Arch said his play was sloppy last Saturday so I’m hoping to see a lot more improvement. But also, better play calling please

They shouldn't need them to soundly beat UTEP. Not just win, but roll over.

Exactly.  If they move the ball at will and the defense doesn't have stupid penalties and shuts them down, we should see a dominant 30+ win.

Does this mean no more Oline belly flops?

And honestly, I really only fucked one that was uglier. Just the one. And this is a valid criticism.

On the other hand... don't hate me because I'm beautiful.

Bumping this because there hasn't been a post here since yesterday morning and we play a game today.

Our fan base is in a strange spot right now. We need a 63-3 type win in the worst way.

I rewatched the San Jose St game last night (the Texas Clips version with only the plays, that lasts about 40 minutes).

We're closer on offense than I originally thought, mainly because so many plays are just one stupid mistake away. Nice end-around to Moore, but Jags gets called for holding. A huge play over the middle to Wingo... until he drops it. Wingo wide open and Manning misses him. OL opens a hole, but Clark misses it and falls down. Long throw to Jags but called back. And again. Jags wide open in the middle of the field but Manning doesn't see him. Etc. etc. etc.

I'm not really sure why we're this out of sorts, but watching other games last weekend, it's certainly not limited to just us. A lot of that can, hopefully, get cleaned up quickly.

Anyone who wants the glass half full can rightfully point to the fact we had 470 yards and should have still covered the spread despite all the times we stepped on our own dick.

I don’t see any position or aspect of the offense as being completely inept like OU last year or anything like that. It’s just a lot of little things adding up right now and we only need to clean up like half of it to properly complement this defense.

Our fan base has been a collection of mewling vaginas. It's not their fault. I'm sure this is exactly how they view the rest of their life. We all had expectations of a dominant team. Because that's not what we're seeing, we're acting like spoiled brats.

Maybe I've tempered my expectations a leeetle bit since the preaseason? But not by much. The only player/position I'm truly concerned about is Conner Stroh. I just don't think that guy has it. I remember thinking the same thing about Mike Williams, and then he had an unbelievable final season, but I don't believe that's what we're seeing here. He just doesn't have whatever it takes to be successful as an OL. Footwork, meanness, strength, balance. He's a fish out of water out there. Not real high on Hutson, either, but I've seen so many mediocre to poor centers at Texas in my lifetime, what's another one?

The rest of the team I see all kinds of potential. I realize that means they haven't done it, yet, but I remain optimistic it will happen. And the defense looks outstanding, as we all expected.

Some of the grumblings are of the "Our head coach is Steve Sarkisian... why is the defense yet again so far ahead of the offense?" variety. Certainly at some point we will get a 2019 LSU type offense that just blows the doors off everyone from game one, right?

I'm not that picky.

Frankly, while I'd be disappointed if we never win a national championship again in my lifetime in football, I'm just pleased we're relevant again. I can't believe we've had two long strings in my lifetime where Texas was irrelevant, but here we are. I remember all the whining about Bowden finishing in the top 5 at FSU 14 years in a row, but so many people concentrated on how few titles he won. I know OU fans were frustrated that they'd make it to the playoffs and then get blown out over and over again, but I'm envious of their conference championships.

I certainly feel like this team can make the playoffs, reach the semis, and then we'll see what happens. And it's not like I look at this roster and worry that the window is closing. We look set up for success for a while as long as Sarkisian is here and locked in.

I feel like some people could at least be in more of a wait and see mode. I guess folks are, but their emotional chips seem like they're being pushed to the under expectations side of the ledger. But that's their business. I just know I don't share the same sentiment of a lot of our more vocal participants here.

While we were irrelevant, it seemed we were always on the brink of being back. How the Horns ever become irrelevant is a baffling thing.

Not that baffling. Hire the wrong coaches over and over again.

How about we limit the god damn penalties today, huh?

Want to see this fucking team come out pissed and ready to take it out on UT El Paso. Is that too much to fucking ask for??

To paraphrase Scipio Tex from his podcast.... We need to absolutely roll these guys on offense, because if we don't then something is very fundamentally wrong. They are bad.

I wish the game were at their stadium. It looks so cool at night on television. Regardless of whatever it actually is like in person. The miners have a cool stadium.

Doesn't really matter if we win by 1 or 81...
