part of the problem is that the GOP will elevate some random's tweet as the national Dem policy.

Oh, look at this woman - who's running for city council in Portland - saying that police funding should be slashed! Dems want Anarchy!

And then the people who only casually pay attention, see this regurgitated by every conservative media outlet, TikTok video, Podcast, etc., and think "hmmm, Dems are crazy!"

They don't even need to use anyone running for office. Everyone knows who votes for who. You see a guy with wrap-around oakleys and an American flag shirt, you know what tribe he belongs to. So all it really needs to be is anyone with blue hair or black-brown. Right wingers are immediately going to associate that person with Democrats.

Yep. They used Black America's reaction to that to fire up the ole hate machine. Disney makes a movie with ethnic representation and it turns into "they are trying to replace us". Has shit all to do with what Democratic politicians are running on.

The other thing is Trump's current bullshit, to wit authoritarianism, bad economics, thinly veiled racism, petty retribution for political enemies, should have been obvious to anyone paying attention since 2016.

To most of us, the choice is binary:  Trump, or not Trump.  But it's a little more complex than that, because a vote for anyone other than Harris was effectively a vote for Trump.

I don't dip my toes in here too much but I'm curious what the Surly CR thinks about this guy. My first exposure to him was his appearance on Rogan and I'm not sure I finished the pod but I was intrigued by the niche space that he is attempting to occupy.

I saw an ad earlier today about him asking for donations and was tempted to drop a few simoleons.

I've used "moderate" to describe myself in the past but I don't think I like that label because it kind of implies I don't give a shit. I have serious issues with both parties and the system as a whole but this dude piques my interest and is someone I would vote for (I vote dem all the time in case anyone was wondering - just not a straight ticket guy).

Like all of you I'm frustrated with the state this country is in right now - and while I don't agree with and have a problem with a lot of the rhetoric on this board I also want the best for the people in this country.

Guys like this that attempt to occupy middle ground without conceding integrity or ethics could be very valuable for the democratic party.

He's the best Democratic candidate for a statewide office we've had since Ann Richards.

Yeah, it's pretty simple. Nobody will take him seriously until he can actually say "holy crap shit is really bad I should have helped keep Trump out of office."

FFS he can't even articulate why Harris is a dipshit, he just says it as if it's fact. He came in here saying he wanted an honest discussion but he can't even explain his starting position, which makes honest open discussion impossible.

Talarico is very very close to the ideal Texas Democratic Senate candidate:

White male.

Super duper duper Christian and knows how to articulate that to people across the spectrum.

Speaks Spanish.

Background in education and is able to seem authentic and come across as a true public servant rather than a super-ambitious power hungry egomaniac (which was what I thought killed Beto).

Legislative experience.

Understands that the way for Democrats to message is to constantly reframe almost every issue as a class (rich vs poor) issue instead of whatever bullshit the MAGA side is spouting.

The one thing he’s missing is being pro gun.  I haven’t seen much from him on the topic.  But he needs to learn how to shoot and if/when he wins the primary he needs to release an ad showing him frying bacon on an AK47 that he just emptied the clip on.  Texans are fucking morons and won’t vote for somebody they think will take their guns.  And if there’s an attack on Talarico, it’s that he’s too soft of a personality.  Undoubtedly the attack ads will say stupid shit like “Talarico wants to take your guns and let illegal immigrants walk through your yard…”

He probably doesn’t have a chance.  He will have a better shot against Paxton than Cornyn.  But I do think he’s a better candidate than Beto was.

Disagree about the learning to shoot thing. Every Dem that's ever tried to have a photo op with a gun (except maybe Jason Kander)  has come off looking stupid and awkward, and the gun crowd will jump on any awkwardness no matter how minor. Tim Walz, a lifelong bird hunter, had a double clutch trying to break open his O/U shotgun and the usual suspects called him a fraud and said he wasn't really a hunter despite the fact that anyone that's ever put more than 50 rounds through an O/U has mistimed the thumb latch/ break open movement.

I also take issue with "super duper Christian."  I mean, it is true that he appears to be a serious Christian that takes seriously the teachings of Christ.

But that's not what Texas "Christians" want.  At all.

At some point, us rationals hope that someone like Talarico can summon our better angels  We are Texans, most of us, and feel like they have to be there somewhere.  But the way Abbott, Paxton, and Patrick continue to plumb our depths without ballot box penalty seems to show that is futile.

By super duper Christian I mostly meant that his faith is at the forefront of his presentation and it is authentic and rational enough that it *should* be able to neutralize the way right wing politicians try to monopolize the “Christian values” crowd.  I echo your skepticism that it will work, but I think it has a better shot than other Dem politicians and I don’t think a guy like Talarico has been tried before.  He’s unique in the right ways.  Does that mean he’ll win?  Probably not.  But I think he’s by far the best chance they’ve got.

Unless there was another blooper, you are misremembering.  He was trying to unload an A400 Beretta.  I distinctly remember because he was using one of the ugly ass blue (BLUE, not rust blued) receiver models, which are set up specifically for clay shooting.  *Most of the ones you find on the shelves are 30/32" barrels, and they all have extended bolts and a flared/enlarged loading port.  It's kind of the opposite of the guy who brings his camo SBE to the 5 stand.

And anyone who's handled semi-auto shotguns knows unloading them can be less than graceful.   It was funny to Pubs because they were being force fed that he was the most masculine masculine to ever masculine, in the history of masculinity - a walking, taking set of bull balls.  It was funny to me in that had he chosen a traditional upland arm, he likely wouldn't have fumbled it away.   Also had to struggle with my thoughts on whether he really was a life long hunter who is white trash enough to bring a flashy clay gun to a stately upland hunt, or did one of his aides run down to the nearest beer bait and ammo and grab the coolest looking thing they saw?   Hell there are ranches in S Texas that you wont get an invite back to showing up with that bullshit.  A governor that's a lifelong hunter knows those types of things.

Jesus this is such bullshit, and you know it’s bullshit.
Are you actually saying that a competitive clay shooter who is comfortable using an A400 xcel (which is a legitimately great sporting gun) shouldn’t bring it out in the field for an occasional hunt?  That’s absurd. What a joke, especially coming from you. You voted for a guy who said we should take guns without due process and another who called an AR-15 a “machine gun” while using it to cook bacon.

Yep, I think I was confusing John Kerry's flop with Walz....FWIW, my kid has a Cole Customs A400 we bought him when he was shooting 4H shotgun sports. It's also his dove gun, his duck gun, and his Turkey gun...because it's the only shotgun he owns. And I've won plenty of money in the Wednesday night 5 stand pot with my old flat black AL391 field gun.

But this is "Exhibit A" in what I'm talking about... There are no votes for a democrat to win by flirting with the gun crowd. They will always find something wrong with what you did, the way you did it, the gun you were using, your boots looked too new...whatever.

No, it's not bullshit.  It's a great gun for sure, if not for being soooo picky on light rounds.  I've got a 20ga 400 and have a 28 lined up for myself at some point.   Note - a "competitive clay shooter" shouldn't be fumbling shells.  That's for guys that shoot a work tournament 1x a year.   Second, he was shooting in the "Governor's hunt" - which, to me, isn't just you and your boys at the lease busting up dove.  A fucking pheasant hunt with politicians and millionaires - there shouldn't be anything without double barrels there.  I'm sorry, you are wrong on this.  And I was told he was a lifelong hunter, not a clay shooter that didnt have room for a purpose rig.   You ever notice how upland guns run 26" barrels, not 30-32?  No obnoxious bolts and flared ramps either.  Blue receivers?  Must just be my mistake.

Trump is very likely the worst gun president we've ever had.  He would have already done away with them if it wouldn't make the libs happy.  I trust Obama 100x more on the 2nd A, but then again, he knew what a proper gun was for a state event (as evidenced by his pics at Camp David).

*It's possible I'm giving Walz too much credit, but then again, I figured you, with the circles you seem to run in, would know the very common upland etiquette as well.

For educational purposes, pic of a gun room at quail focused ranch here in Texas.

Cole is a bad ass rig, congrats to both of you.  Reminds me of how i learned our high school team got a shooting team years after I graduated, a Caesar Guerini sticker on some girls truck - must be nice.

And unless you were using the Xtrerema or whatever their waterfowl line was, then you were right at home on the course.  Fucking 390 and 391's were THE SA clay gun for a decade or two.  Just like this purpose built 400 would be, blue receiver and all.   There's hundreds (thousands) of 391's and 400's on clay shoots going on right this second (ftr, I exampled a camo SBE for a reason).   I don't know your kid or if his love for shooting/hunting matches his fishing, but when he's out of school and a professional, it would not uncommon to have a waterfowl gun, and a dove gun, and a OU in case that rich friend you have flies you down to the ranch for a quail jaunt.   For example, by the time he's on a second or third career and running for VPOTUS .

It's simply not a discussion, when hunting upland with monied people, bring the apropos gun.  This is clip on ties to a black tie event type shit guys.  Easy.

I'm on one of our local courses once a week for ~25 weeks/year.   If you stay there long enough, you'll see lots of things.

I don't care that he's a D or an R or L or I or CPUSA, we just have near polar opposite visions of the country we share.

Like I said above, I found it less funny than I did Cruz attempting to fish, or many other poser photo-op blooper.  I don't golf or I'm certain I could find ways to poke fun at Trump about it.  Maybe JD V will take up something I know something about so I can laugh at that, too.  How could I forget the posts above?  We can all point and laugh at Cornyn for his basement sale Cavendars outfits and his brisket.  It's all the same cosplay shit.
