by holding a gun to the head of their own voters and forcing Democrats to be adults in the room. This is the first time the Democrats have said “pull the trigger,” and it has clearly unnerved the GOP caucus.

And this is the only play.  It's actually the smart and winning play, because it creates a real intersection: it's clear that the American electorate (or a very big and important chunk of it) only responds to pain -- their own pain.  And the Republicans are saying "give in or we hurt them!"  Fuck yes, go ahead and hurt them.  Do it.  Because (1) that's the only way those voters will learn, and (2) you (Repubs) will be the ones doing it.  Go ahead.  Start shooting hostages, so the world knows in clear detail who the fucking murdering terrorist is here.

Along those lines, as I pondered SNAP benefits ending the other day, my first thought and instinct (a pretty predictable Dem-type thought, by the way) was "I should write a fat check to the food bank."  But then I stopped.  And remembered the lesson I just typed above.  Nope.  The only way we're going to learn anything is by touching the hot stove and actually feeling the pain.  So....we need folks going hungry.  Really hungry.  Like, desperate hungry.

Is that fucking awful?  Of course it is.  Will plenty of people who didn't vote for this shit be caught up in that pain?  Absolutely.

These are gruesome times.  When you understand the reality that the only way we MIGHT get out of this is if enough Americans feel truly awful pain.....then you actually need to allow things to happen that will cause that pain.  So, here we are.  What a fucking horrible place to be.  But hey, Republicans, you keep saying "I'll do it!  I'll pull the trigger!"  Well, at long last.....

Every map of the United States that shows the concentration of a bad thing is the same map. And look, I want the best for those people because they are my people. But they also keep voting for people who put them in harm’s way. It was always going to come to this. The sooner they understand that, the better.

SNAP is ~$100B a year...  US Grocery market is ~$900B a year. Of course not all US Grocery is SNAP eligible, so let's be conservative and drop $100B from that $900B.

If we agree with those numbers, SNAP is 1/8th of the US Grocery market.

Let's say we don't agree and SNAP is 'only' 1/10th of the US Grocery market (because I don't know if convenience stores that accept SNAP are counted in that number)

How long are US grocers going to be ok with 1/10th of their usually "guaranteed" revenue not being available?

(1) They'll bitch.

(2) Trump will tell them to STFU, because "nobody knows about groceries more than me.  Groceries -- it's an old-fashioned word, but nobody understands groceries more than me, believe you me.  I understand groceries like no one has ever seen before."

(3) If any of them keep bitching, Trump will have the DOJ sue them for some bullshit and extract a $100 million "settlement/fine/penalty" for them to have the right to continue doing business.

Things like snap payments, Medicaid expansion, and ACA credits are force multipliers. The pain will spread farther than the direct impact of the cuts, especially Medicaid and ACA. Loss of rural hospitals in some cases will kill the largest employer in the communities.

Those healthcare workers and their spouses will pull up stakes. That will affect retail, real estate, finance, schools, etc. Pain is coming. It’s not the brave thing to do for Dems to distance themselves as much as possible from the cause of this pain, it’s the smart thing.

Absolutely, and great post.  For this crew to claim to be financial geniuses, nobody understands finance and economics better than me, they don't have any fucking understanding of ROI, multipliers, or the velocity of money at all.

The very communities that voted for Trumpco at the highest rate are going to be the ones eating a 10-layer shit sandwich as a result of his regime's complete and total destruction of our systems.

Yep.  Pick a theme, and HAMMER it.  Trumpism did it with illegals and xenophobia.

We need to do it with billionaires living the life and fucking you over while you decide whether you can afford Hamburger Helper this month.

Show a picture of Trump's dining room

And then a picture of the American people's dining room: a table with meager food, scared kids, and worried parents.

Over and over and over.

You realize that most red state voters using aca subsidies don’t think it’s the aca? In oklahoma they say “we don’t need Obamacare we have SoonerCare.” They also think their welfare isn’t welfare only the Blacks are on welfare. I personally don’t even care about the fucking aca at this point the bottom line is that the right refuses to govern in good faith. They refuse to negotiate. They support a president who literally says he only cares about his voters and thinks it’s funny to use ai to drop shit on those who don’t vote for him. The bs message they have up on government webpages is all it takes, no dem should vote for a single thing proposed by republicans period. Yeah let planes crash, who cares at this point. Either the US voters figure it out or we collapse. If it’s the latter lets speed it up so we can start fresh sooner rather than later.

I remember back when this was a hot topic the first go round or two, I'd always get idiot patients bitching about obamacare.  When I'd take a peek at their facesheet and they had 'obamacare', if I had an extra 5 minutes I'd point it out.  It was worth wasting my 5 minutes to put them in their place and have a good laugh.  This wasn't a rare scenario, at least 1-2 bozos a week and that's in the Chicagoland area.  I can't even imagine Oklahoma.  I'd always leave with, 'without obamacare, I wouldn't have seen you today...so maybe that's a good thing?'.  It's been years since I needed to see patients to make a living so when I do round, I deliver good care, but I also say whatever the fuck I want.  If they don't wanna see me again - excellent.

I have mentioned before that I love going to grocery stores (One of my fascinations in being autistic has always been numbers.) and I will just walk around looking at prices to see what they are marking up. They have significantly raised prices at Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club. I watch the way they raise prices and then three weeks later put up the rollback sign like they are saving customers money. I won’t explain all the prices changes I see because honestly it’s a boring discussion, but I see it happening. Costco has done a much better job with their price control, which is no small miracle to pull that off out here considering almost everything is shipped here from the mainland and then Japan, Korea, China and the Philippines among a few other countries.

The grocery store is my escape to be with my thoughts, drink a beer, and shop for the week.

I stopped taking the kids as much now that they’re older. But I loved when they were toddlers and you could quiz them on colors or animals or just talk to them.

Now it’s kind of a beating taking them bc all they do is ask for junk food and fight with one another.

Nope, give me a cold draft beer when I walk in and I’m happy to kill a hr + taking a stroll through H-E-B and getting centered. Peeping hot moms is also a nice bonus.
