Everything is a total fuckup by Dems according the "we're losing because of messaging" crowd. The republic will fall, and Democratic historians will blame the Democratic Party instead of the actual perpetrators. It's self-crippling. It's blind to the game at hand. It's also evidently an addiction.

As to the post, what is not praiseful about the word "masterful?"

"Masterful gambit" is a catchphrase/meme. Sarcasm.

Setting aside whether or not the ACA subsidy vote matters politically, why do we think that it will even actually happen? Because John Thune pinky promised? That's the most shocking part of this to me. The GOP is just gonna say "lol jk" and let the Dems go cry in NYT op-eds.

You didn’t get the policy you wanted because *you* haven’t won enough goddamn elections. But what you did get was an opposition successfully throwing sand in the gears.

Opposition is defined by how much shit you can get away with fucking up.

This isn't wrong, but the Dems are still wrong and are still pathetic gaping vaginas which is an insult to vaginas because vaginas actually have a noble purpose even the gaping ones.

It's wrong because here's how much an actual opposition party, defending the very existence of the Republic, should be willing to fuck up: everything.  All of it.  Until the mid-terms.  Because...and this is really, really, really fucking important...their opponent has clearly demonstrated their willingness and desire to fucking END THE REPUBLIC.  They will fuck up EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE.  These are not "policy arguments."  They are existential fights in a total war.  You wage total war by...waging total war.  It's a shitty, shitty thing to start.  And I really, really wish the GQP hadn't started it.  But here we are.

Fights like this one end like this:

It’s not going to happen. Fetterman and the capitulating Dems get nothing. Oh and Trump will still continue to impound funds and fire people/shut down agencies he doesn’t like while also illegally funding his priorities. Just a masterclass in how to be a useless politician in the twilight of American democracy

Johnson calls the House back..also, Johnson is still a huge pussy

Quote

Johnson doesn't take any questions at press conference

House Speaker Mike Johnson notably refused to take questions from reporters in the House Radio-TV gallery, where members are required to take at least one question.

"There were probably lots of questions, but I'm going to get a lot of my own questions answered later today, so stay tuned for more," Johnson said.

Yes and most importantly- how much longer can he simply refuse to swear in the rep from AZ? Is there a court case filed on this yet? How is every member of Congress not worried about this precedent?

They know it's going to fail. They want it as an issue for the mid-terms.

Twilight?

Dude.  It's midnight on December 21 above the Arctic Circle.  Nothing but darkness.  And the calendar is going to stay frozen on this solstice of the Republic.

Not for nothing, the Democrats got full funding for Agriculture guaranteed adding it to the Defense and VA funding measures from the House. This at least guarantees SNAP/WIC funding for the year regardless of what happens on February 1. Republicans will, in theory, not be able to starve children and the disabled to force Democrats to negotiate on the next stopgap solution February 1.

I would love for Democrats to constantly remind everyone the Republicans could have passed an actual budget with full year funding for 2026 by now, since they have control of both branches and the Presidency.

House just needs a simply majority, right?  Are the House Republicans stupid enough insist on the RIF and refuse to even hold a vote on healthcare when there's a 0% chance of it passing?

If the house changes anything it goes back to the Senate for a revote. The Senate is, in beltway parlance, "jamming" the house, in that Thune will say if you change this deal, it won't pass the Senate, the shutdown will continue, so take it or leave it.

The admin seems to largely still be compliant with court orders and we just held elections. There’s still more to fall before it’s midnight in the arctic circle

They were never going to get anything. They got through last Tuesday, won big, and now they have the healthcare issue saved for the next election.

Oh, and they saved the filibuster, which is very, very, very important to senators.

Isn't politics fun?

I’m frustrated with capitulation, too, but don’t we want the ACA vote to fail, I.e, the GOP passed a bill with clear consequences for them electorally and the Dems need to let them have it?

There won’t be a vote. And GOP already owned it bc the subsidies expire because of the only funding bill they just passed.

Vaginas are actually strong AF.  Even by aggressive internalize mysogyny standards, equating vaginas with the weak sauce that is the Democratic party is a low blow.

Yes.

But it doesn't matter.  The Republicans can actively ass-rape the American people, and the voters will just blame Biden and Obama and the Democrats.

Here's where the Democrats are really hurt by not having an organized propaganda wing like Fox News. Guarantee that my in laws already have their Thanksgiving meal talking points lined up for them as of this morning.

It must be a riot to look down at millions of americans struggling to afford health insurance, many of whom may be forced to go without for a year or two, while they happily accept their heavily subsidized health care and tell us to stick with them. Meanwhile Trumpco is steamrolling the lot of them while they sit around fingering each others assholes and calling it a strategy. Fuck that noise. Vote em all out.

Whelp.

I guess nothing to do but sit back and see if they manage to save the ACA funding anyway. If they fuck this up they have only themselves to blame. It sure feels like they just surrendered.

Ah well. We had almost a week to feel like things were turning around for this party we are all stuck with.

Reminds me of how McConnell wouldn't allow Obama's pick for Supreme Court be brought to the floor. It's the games these guys play and get away with.

Making the GOP abolish the filibuster to push through harmful and unpopular legislation would've been a win. But too many Dem senators still want to preserve the filibuster, so they didn't really have any achievable goals.

That's not what they did last week, nor what polling is indicating with the decline in Trump's popularity.

I'm with @David Dennison that this was always going to be a losing effort.  The only silver lining would have been the elimination of the filibuster, but that's still on the table if the Democrats regain Senate control.

No.

It's a pinky promise to hold a vote.  Without a commitment from Thune to guarantee it's part in a future mini or omnibus and to try and jam the House in a must pass bill, it's meaningless.

It's very clearly not, unless several Dem Senators lose primaries. Some caved today because they're worried about people going hungry, others caved because they're worried about the impact to air travel a longer shutdown would have, but they all caved to protect the filibuster. Trump was leaning hard on the GOP Senators to eliminate it and they would've folded to him sooner than later. It's very likely that all Dems actually needed to do was wait another week, but they didn't want to risk it because there's still too many Dems who think the filibuster is important.

The filibuster, the ultimate grand standing tool that also doesn't actually accomplish anything.  I can see why they cherish it so much.
