Agree that someone will take a run at Lincoln. SDS even mentioned him for Florida.

I think Lanning has a great setup. He’s got all the pieces for an NC. And I think that working for one mega-donor like Knight, is better than fending off the loony SEC donor pool. Knight’s investments in Oregon make sense— he’d love to win an NC but he really wants Oregon football to be a cool brand ambassador for Nike.

The schools opening in the South, especially if Auburn enters the chat, are pressure cookers where almost no one will meet the demands.

He's 87. I think he's a lot more interested in Oregon winning a national championship at this stage of his life versus being a cool brand ambassador than he was when he was younger.

What are you even going to have to pay Kiffin? $15m for 10 years? Is he really worth that?

He can make that Texas UF tailgate party gross over $65k.   PS that man is still my hero.

Considering his past, Kiffin should use this to get as much as he can and stick with Ole Miss. It's finally working for him as a head coach, why mess with what's working?

Lot of money in Arkansas.  Tyson Foods ( John Tyson recruited Calipari and committed the $), jb hunt trucking, Stephens Inc, jerry jones family, Dillard family, and lots of early investors in those companies.

Athletically, Cal could be in the same conversation.

Kind of a split flagship with UCLA.

If you're talking athletically then obviously it's not LSU and there are schools by far worse than Cal - including a bunch that don't play FBS football.

And a fair amount of low-profile timber and oil money that is more likely to have connection to UA.

A lot of Arkansas' high profile big money is to UA as the Bass family is to UT, for example.

This. Depends on what he wants. But he has a chance to write his own history at Ole Miss like Cignetti at Indiana. Neither school has had that type of success. He can sit down with Ole Miss and say “this is what I need to make shit happen.” You will always be compared to who came before you at LSU and Florida. And LSU still has no qualms about firing you even when you do win. Penn State is not an option if I am Lane but if they back up the Brinks truck it’s a conference he’s never really been in. I’d stay at Ole Miss and be a legend. People there can’t really compare you unfavorably to anyone who came before you. My three cents.

Cal has not done shit in the major sports in my lifetime, relative to resources and talent.
2x they've gone 10-2 in football.
In hoops, they made a Sweet 16 and won an NIT

In baseball, they tied for 1st in 1980 and have never been to the CWS.

As a flagship university they certainly carry the water academically; but the question about LSU was sports.  Cal doesn't remotely approach LSU's success in the arena.

He would have a better chance and more money to do what he needs to do to win at Florida.

Mississippi is just as bad financially as LSU, but LSU has more alums so a bigger base.

This was pretty good, responding to Venables saying that OU had the better team on Saturday

Florida is gonna wind up with James Franklin when they can't pull Kiffin or Lanning. Rhule or Matt Campbell to PSU? Kenny Dillingham to FSU when it opens up? What the hell is LSUs backup plan, Clark Lea? And then a bunch of retreads are gonna get new life somewhere with all the movement and everyone is getting raises

Real talk, Iowa is a well-managed, affordable, safe, and relatively prosperous state unlike most of the SEC and that leads to people caring less about college football.

Good, but too long and too actually injured and defensive. Spurrier would have said something like: “They’re the best team already out of the playoffs, I’ll say that. You can’t even spell “out of the playoffs” without OU.”

Freeman is at least going to consider an LSU offer if the $$$ is right. He hasn't really hid that he's aware of ND's transfer limitations. LSU is its own deal and I can see him not wanting to wade into that flavor of crazy, it all just comes down to what your goals are I think. If its national championship or bust for a guy, you have to listen to LSU. If its about quality of life and being in the hunt for a championship, he should stay and see how things shake out for Day at Ohio State.

If Texas were willing to pony up, we could get him.

Thoughts on Dillingham to LSU?

I am operating on the thought that in the next few days their AD goes missing and ends up alligator chow somewhere in the Basin.

Okay well Texas isn't hiring.

I doubt that LSU goes back to the ND well. I think the fan reaction would be bad.

I tend to agree, all my LSU family and friends are legit pissed about the BK contract. They all want Kelvin Sheppard.

The crazy thing about this carousel is the lack of proven candidates. Kiffin is basically the only guy who's done it at multiple schools and/or an extended period. You could argue Drinkwitz or Cignetti. Maybe Satterfield but he wasn't very good at Louisville. Who else - Fisch? Mullen? Sumrall?

The other hot names, Key, Lea, Dillingham, have had 1 good year. Full stop. Joe Brady appears in a bunch of articles but he, like Kliff, is probably an NFL HC soon.

Complete side note - Jeff Choate is 1-7 this year. Another one (unfortunately) on the hot seat.

Second weirdest fanbase in college football? I’ve heard Sheppard a lot too.

He’s 37 and only has been in coaching since 2020. Please do this you corn dog smelling idiots.

Nobody is worth these obscene dollars (and even more obscene buyouts).  One bad season and you can get canned.  Eventually everyone (pretty much) has a bad season.  Hell, Franklin had PSU in the semis and was a play or 2 from the title last year.  Midseason the following year?  Out.  $50 million later.

That seems like it could wind up being a total disaster.

LSU needs to be really careful with the idea that anybody can just walk in and win there.

Who truly is a PROVEN candidate?

Kiffin flamed out how many times before he got his some of his shit straight.

CIgnetti had won at lower levels, but did he have a better track record than Klieman?  Heck, same could be said for Leopold at KU and the track record is mixed on Saban assistants.

Dan Lanning had what track record prior to Oregon?

What Key and Lea fit their schools, but will kids at name brand schools buy into what they ask of their kids in terms of style of play and sacrificing your numbers for the good of the program?

Fisch wasn't great at UA, reminds me a bit of Dykes where you will win some games, but might not compete which obiviously not enough.

Coaching hires have always had a degree of risk which is why giving the contracts these AD's have been giving is just fucking stupid.

They say hes a tough guy that the problem players will listen to, and would pair him with a good X's and O's OC and have plenty of money left over to buy a QB and build a roster.

Have they considered that he doesn't know fucking anything about the higher-level aspects of running a college football program?

I mean maybe he's a diamond in the rough but holy shit talk about rolling the dice.

LSU is gonna do a splash hire. They are not gonna go after a big name. They are gonna go under the radar.

I can see them offering Kyle Flood the keys to the kingdom.

Les Miles, Eddie O, Nick Saban.

Which two were never considered coaching savants and what do all three have in common about their time at LSU?

Les could coach his balls off for a stretch there. He beat OU twice in four tries at Okie Lite and then instantly tore it up at LSU - who Saban had left in a good spot. He had over 20 years coaching experience - mostly in college - before LSU hired him.

Ed O was promoted from within and had been a stud D Line coach going back to the 80s and had multiple, largely successful or competent stints as an AHC, DC and/or interim HC. He was obviously a fantastic culture fit with LSU and caught lightning in a bottle in 2019.

LSU gave Sheppherd a director of player development job for a season after he retired (which isn't a real coaching gig) and since then he has been a position coach in the NFL for four seasons and been a D coordinator for eight games.

He is wildly underqualified compared to both Les and O as well as Brian Kelly.

I agree on Sheppard and in all honesty Eddie O had the worst stint of the three because he hadn't learned from the mistakes at Ole Miss and he let too much shit in his life outside the program bleed into the program

Neither Les nor Saban on the surface would appear to be fits for the program except they were genuine people. Nick a genuine arse and Les a genuine goofy fuck, but they were real and honest and they did hire good staffs.

Kelly was arrogant (so is Nick), but he came across as fake as his accent or his blow ups at the press conferences.

I do think LSU is a place that has some advantages and you don't have to have a huge name to sign talent or be competitive.

Jeff Brohm has done well at Purdue and Louisville. But like Dillingham, Key, and Lea, he’s already at his Alma Mater.

The thing about LSU is their true love is Saban. He’s the one who “got away.” No matter who comes next they will always feel that way. Even if you win a few “natties” you still aren’t Saban. I guess some people would be happy with the money and a professional relationship where your office is just borrowed and not permanent. But it’s definitely not a good basis for a personal relationship. But some don’t care. Lane is probably the best candidate for this job. Because he will bank. He has the kind of ability to not care if he’s sloppy seconds or fifths. He will take the money and do his best to win a MNC with it. And if LSU terminates him down the road he will still be a hot candidate for another P5 school. If he wants the LSU job that is. It won’t bother him unless they make him dress like Saban and color his hair red.
