Quote

The two men killed as they floated holding onto their capsized boat in a secondary strike against a suspected drug vessel in early September did not appear to have radio or other communications devices, the top military official overseeing the strike told lawmakers on Thursday, according to three sources with direct knowledge of his congressional briefings.

It sounds like there was a good chance they were going to drown anyway.

And if you sank the boat carrying the drugs, then your anti-smuggling mission was complete.

But no, we hit them again to make sure they were dead.

Straight up war crime.  Deliver them to the Hague.

Yeah, we hit them hard enough to kill 9 dudes, but the boat was intact enough that the other two dudes were somehow going to flip it over and continue ferrying drugs to the US.  Across the Gulf of Mexico.

Trump has had masturbatory fantasies of taking war to the cartels in Mexico for a decade or more.

But that would require cooperation with a duly elected leader of a sovereign state who doesn't pretend to be a dictator.  And acting unilaterally would be a gross violation of sovereignty and probably get us internationally sanctioned.

There's also a chance it backfires and American civilians get killed by the cartels, and a more than decent chance Hispanics get upset that he's killing Mexican civilians, and they show up to the polls next November.

So it's Venezuela.

It feels like about 80% of the plot to Clear and Present Danger, with the exception that we are not doing it covertly. Clancy assumed American Presidents wanting to kill people in South America would be a little bit discreet about it.

We'll be nuking brown people from orbit by next year.  It's the only way to be sure.

I recall as a kid that my uncle had a chow. I was 8 or 9 and that sucker chased me one day and I had to jump over the fence to get away. Still don’t know why he did that since I had very little in the way of interactions with that dog. I came back with my mom the next day and he finished the job from the day before as we were walking in the gate and it took a chunk out of my backside. When we’re at the hospital getting patched up I remember my mom believing me about the dog chasing me the day before for no reason. Have not liked that breed of dog since that incident. Only dog in my entire life that was like that towards me.

I love all dogs and I don’t like chows.

Doesn't that directly conflict with previous testimony that they HAD to do a second strike because the victims were radioing for help?

Remember, they said originally that it was fake news that there was a second strike.

The Coast Guard did a great job of catching these people and delivering them for trial and we destroyed the drugs.

But that wasn't good enough. It didn't get Whiskey Pete and Miller and MAGA hard.

Tom Cotton yesterday made it sound like they were about to flip that blown-up boat over and resume their drug dealing activities while calling in for help (and for more drugs, to be given directly to various American elementary schools, probably). He could definitely tell all of that from the video, and that's why he is totally cool with murdering them.

This is a pattern. "Why my goodness gracious, I can't believe you fell for that obvious fake news story. We would never in a million years do something so heinous."

"There is video."

"Um, you didn't let me finish.... Of course we did it and it's perfectly fine and moral and legal and fuck off if you don't like it."

Like flipping an ocean-going zodiac is like flipping a canoe.

ETA, not a zodiac, but has 3-4 outboard engines that probably weigh a ton (literally 2,000 lbs).

Part of me wonders how much of this is mafia-style negotiating.  We'll stop sinking your drug boats if you deliver X kilos of uncut coke to Don Jr's attorney's secretary's roommate each month.

So, what happens when we find out one of these was just some guys deep see fishing?

Statistically speaking, by this point, we have definitely killed a bunch of innocent people.

Hell they could all be innocent and we wouldn't know. It's not like they're releasing any information or, you know, evidence.

I'm fairly sure Tom Cotton tortured pets as a child.

As a child . . . as a soldier.  Some self-hating, closeted guys do the "hoorah / kill em all" shit to further enhance their "normal straight republican" credentials.  Its pathological.

It's frustrating to see other pundits talking about the legality of Hegseth's moves and what consequences he should face without using this qualifier: Hegseth, just like every single Cabinet member and Trump employee, believes he is 100% untouchable. They are not worried about anything they do or anything they say, because no one can stop them. They have the courts and Trump rules over everyone.

Until everyone understands this and strategizes accordingly, nothing will change.

Honestly, I'd have more respect for them if they had said, "They were dead anyway. We were just putting them out of their misery." Instead of whatever the fuck this is.

Lying. Lots and lots of lying.

These people never miss a chance to be absolute ghouls, do they?
