You haven't seen him take a significant snap in a year. If our program is a grade above dog shit, he has improved enough to "contribute" if called upon. That's all I am saying.

He played "significant" snaps against Maryland four months ago.  And he shit all over the bed.

If our program is a grade above dog shit, then Kyle Porter will never see another carry in a meaningful situation. The only reason Porter would play is because we have done a shitty job of stocking the RB position the last 4 years. There's no coaching that magically makes Porter a good runner all of a sudden.

he had 1 rushing attempt for 2 yards (went for a TD) - for comparison Watson had 12, Danny Young had 8, Ehlinger had 7, Ingram had 6 and Jamison had 2. Porter literally had the fewest rushing attempts of anyone on the team.

he had 3 catches for 10 yards.

those were his season stats. all in the Maryland game.

he didn't play "significant" snaps then.

I think he was actually on the field many more times than he touched the ball. Part of the problem with Porter, if memory serves, was that he was great in pass pro, but sucked with the ball. When he was on the field, the defense didn’t respect him as a potential threat. He was either run blocking or picking up the pass rush. But he got snaps and tipped off the defense in the process, regrettably.

Porter can play on special teams and given we have no depth at RB, it would definitely be a positive development if he stays.    If we have injuries next year there are teams we can beat with Porter and he's always been pretty decent at picking up a blitz.

Is Jordan Moore a backup to Catalon or do we think he's a take as a transfer regardless?  Assuming Overshown stays we're pretty damn loaded at safety.

I'm thinking that throwing the ball three times to the running back on the final drive maybe isn't Porter's fault.

Playcalling is definitely not on Porter.  But you'd hope your running back would give a little bit of fucking effort when his name is called.

You're so extremely wrong it's not even funny.  Porter was on the field for our final drive of the game.  Here are three examples of him playing "significant" snaps and doing a really shitty job.

Play 2:

1DiHDf.gif

It's the next play.  Texas still down five.  3rd & 13.

Porter runs the same route.  He does a better job of not running himself out of bounds this time, and because of that, he's got a lot more space to work with when he gets the ball.  Texas needs a first down here.  But after making a pretty shitty attempt at a juke, Porter lets the first defender nudge him out of bounds.  What an absolutely shitpile play this is.  Basically the opposite of the LJH pass plays for 1 yard which turned into 15 yard gains because LJH didn't give up.  Porter surrenders himself, forcing us into a 4th and 5, instead of fighting for extra yardage which could have made converting much easier.

Nevertheless, Sam comes back the next play and converts the fourth down like a fucking boss.

Fighting for extra yards and getting tackled in bounds would have been a worse decision than going out - especially considering he had a DL, S, and DB all converging on him.  Clock was at 1:30 and Texas had no timeouts.

LJH can go hulk - he's 6'4" and 225 pounds.  Kyle Porter is 5'9" and 205 pounds.

Spoiler

Play 1:

kc8aj6.gif

Texas is down 5.  It's 2nd & 10, with 1:45 left.

Porter is outlet man on the pass, but he runs way too far out on the route.  Basically, he should have stopped when he turned around, but he keeps backpedaling while waiting for Sam.  By the time the ball gets to him, he is against the sideline, and a single defender is able to drop him for a 2 yard loss.  He runs a shitty route, and basically runs himself out of bounds/into a tackle.

Play 3:

oQhxOM.gif

Same drive.  2nd & 10.  1:17 left.

Texas is in it's 5 WR look.  Porter is split to the top of the screen.  He's got no one over the top of him.  He runs a 5 yard sit route.  Sam puts a ball right on his hands, and Porter drops the freaking pass, because he totally sucks ass.  That forces us into 3rd and 10 instead of 3rd and 4 or 3rd and 3.  The next play, Maryland drops 8 defenders, because they know Texas has to throw the ball, and Sam throws his second pick of the game.

So, yes.  Porter played "significant" snaps in the Maryland game.  And he totally shit the bed.

that's fair, i would argue that there are scheme issues with having Kyle Porter on the field with the game on the line/in the 2 min offense - and with having Kyle Porter as part of your 5 wide package in general when his weaknesses are well known at this point in time but that's fair.

i thought you meant significant snaps as in a large number. you meant significant snaps as in important, so that's my fault

The first and third play show his total ineffectiveness. The second play actually was the smart play. Was he supposed to try to fight up field against 3 defenders with 1:30 of clock time and no time outs?  Gain 1-2 yards, burn 25 seconds of clock?

Fuck you Katfid. I could have certainly lived without watching three clips of Kyle Porter being used as our savior against the mighty turtles.

Yeah, but it sure shut up the parade of posters who were saying we should be trying to bring back Kyle Porter next year.

We should bring back Kyle Porter next year. We need the depth. Derrian "Jim" Brown can't be expected to take all 80 or so snaps a game, despite his alleged immortality and ability to wield Mjolnir.

Kirko get carries in 2019?  He looked good on the handful of plays when he was a freshman.  Maybe he's the "in case of emergency break glass" back for when everyone else is injured.  Two coaches have to turn keys simultaneously to open the vault where his helmet is held.  I understand we were never in a position to get guys like 5th string backs playing time this year but who knows what 2019 will bring.

When he sneezes, alert the training staff and book the imaging center for an MRI.

In your emergency scenario, kirko is the glass that you break.

Wells:

Spoiler

poster: TFB is reporting that Jason Washington wants to take Jordan Moore.

Wells: That’s a little inaccurate.

Texas is interested, including Washington, but nothing more right now.

///

poster:  I think it's telling that @Eric Nahlin dropped the idea that the staff probably thinks that going after Barlow would be *redundant* with Brown already in the fold.

I read that as acknowledging that, yes Barlow has skills, but they're the same skills that Brown has, and we don't need two of the same; if we go after another one we want him to bring something different to the table.

Wells: Proper assessment.

I actually was not trying to be facetious.  Reminds me of EF--looks to be a great pass-rusher.  But appears to be undersized for a hand-in-the-dirt DL (especially in Orlando's 4i system).  Might have a future as a B-backer, though.
