  3. https://www.kxan.com/news/local/austin/austins-homeless-residents-fear-whats-next-once-camping-ban-takes-effect/ Abigail Wilson is among those who just found out about the Prop B ban. She said she had no interest in going to a shelter, and instead would seek refuge in a more isolated spot. “I like to live off the grid. And living outside and in a tent,” she said. “And living like I want to.” Rebecca Shivers said she came here from Missouri and was surprised to find there weren’t more homeless resources in a state as wealthy as Texas. “Texas has got all this money, they should not be out here like this,” she said. “They got all them apartments coming to them, they need to give us all one.” Fuck these two bitches.

  7. I know this is going to come off like I'm "triggered" to you, but I'm really just annoyed that I'm going to have to explain this like I'm speaking to a small child. The "criminalization" aspect gives the authorities a legal pretext to order the campers to move. Without it, the cops can't ask the homeless to leave - they are breaking no law. We are not going to be locking up scores of bums, nor are we expecting them to pay tickets. Instead, the goal is to make this lifestyle much more of a pain in the ass for them . . . they have to move every few days, they keep losing all their shit because it gets confiscated, they can't camp out right across the street from a convenience store, or in places with easy access to drugs or shit to steal. Some will slip back into the shadows. Many others will simply leave and go back to where they came from, like the dipshits from Missouri in the story above. If you don't think the current policy is encouraging a significant number of people to come here because it's easy to live the lifestyle they want to live, you're even more naïve than your posts here suggest. This policy made the city a much, much worse place for its residents. It's time to go back to the old policy. This isn't rocket science and it isn't about "fixing" homelessness. Yes, let's read more economics. I like the stuff about people responding to incentives and also negative externalities. Seems relevant here.

  9. You called her a liar without evidence, and when asked to provide evidence what you provided wasn't evidence of a lie at all. You, in fact, lied. And you're right, I wouldn't react the same way if you called Trump a liar, because he is one. Great point! I also wouldn't react the same way to you praising Dave Grohl as I would you praising Adolf Hitler. What a total fucking hypocrite I am, huh? It's perfectly fine to disagree with AOC's politics. It's fine to think she's misguided about the green new deal or whatever, or that the tax rates she supports would be inefficient. You didn't do that. You called her a liar and a terrible person, as terrible as Trump. That's very different. She's not a terrible person. She is one of the very few people in politics who very clearly genuinely cares about helping people and, as I said and others have echoed here, has done more for the people of Texas than any of the actual pieces of shit we keep electing, who have destroyed our infrastructure and left us all to die because all they care about is abusing transgendered children and making sure black people can't vote. But yeah, go ahead and call someone who actually tries to serve people a horrible person because you feel a reflexive need to pretend that you're smarter than everyone by being politically independent. Jesus christ man, you're 34, not 18. Grow the fuck up.

  15. and you sound like what's wrong with the left. support every fucking feel good cause out there, damned to common sense and who's actually going to pay for it. in the same vein that austin leadership created councilwoman fitlump, the fucking idiocy of the left created Trump and his MAGA supporters. if you want to help the homeless so much, start giving money directly to these carpet bagging shitheads. also open your home and yard to them. if you aren't doing either, then fuck off coming in here preaching to the majority of austinites who see this shitshow for what it is.

  17. San Francisco’s problem is that it is a municipality taking on a regional - even national - problem. Certainly, San Franciscans deal with homelessness, but in general the city is taking in homeless from other parts of the state and country. Many trace this back to California’s significant mental health budget cuts in the 80’s. Likewise, I imagine the majority of homeless in Austin are simply there because they were drawn to an easy place to be homeless. It has never made sense to me why homeless drawn to SF or Austin need to be provided housing in SF or Austin. These are extraordinarily expensive cities where even high-income households struggle to afford housing. We need to reframe homelessness as a state and federal issue as well, and not solely a city one.

  24. That's not a lie. There were absolutely people in the mob that stormed the Capitol hunting for AOC. AOC not only serves her own constituents, she's done more for the people of Texas than any of the piece of shit GOP officials this moron fucking state constantly elects. To say that she's the left's Trump indicates either that you're a complete troll, in which case you can eat ten gallons of shit, or that you're so deep in the GOP propaganda swamps that your bullshit about being in the middle can't possibly be true. In both cases you're a liar.

What will happen is, the Chicoms will sell us big 3D printers, we'll happily install them everywhere, then one day while we are all watching memes, they will all turn on AT ONCE and each print out an auto-driving TANK, sure it's got light armor that'd barely stop a .22, but the traitor Demoncrats took away all the .22s, plus they have forced a generation to have FEELINGS, and you can't improvise a satchel charge when you've got FEELINGS, can you, Bucko? This is so obvious.

  28. look, surly would consider me a libtard, but i was more poking fun at the moving of goal post with yearly lockdowns for flu vs just saying get vaxxed. As time goes by and the vax is available to just about everyone, i start to lean to the yolo side of covid control. should people who can get the vax and don't be mocked and made to feel bad? Sure. Should the gov require/request mask mandates continue until we reach some magical % of Americans vaxed? No. I don't have a strong opinion on vax passport either. I have the vax. CVS knows i have the vax and that I like to also purchase chocolate everytime i am in the store. I am cool with that. the gov has my name, rank and serial number. how much i (legally) make. They could get a warrant for my phone and track me all over the country. Companies can run a credit check on me and decide whether to or how they do bidness with me. Why can't businesses ask if i have been vaxed? People were cool with answering questions like "have you been in contact with a C19 case in the last x days", "have you had a fever lately", "have you tested positive for covid" to do all sorts of stuff like enter buildings, fly, travel, even get a vaccine. Why were people not refusing to answer those invasive medical questions. well now there can be one simple question that takes care of all that crap. Have you been vaxed? Yes, OK please move to the free and clear VIP line. No, Well then please prepare anus for swabbing and move to the left with all the other degenerates. Is the end game Gattaca for the vax passport? is that the fear? I can squint and see that in the future. Too much money to be made denying insurance to 'genetically predisposed'. Would the vax passport usher that in...probably not. I don't get the GOP rush to pass laws banning vax passports.

I was astounded that ~66K voted against the idea that their fellow humans shouldn't be allowed to just camp out wherever they want, trashing public and private spaces, shooting drugs, shitting wherever they please, setting fires, etc. But then some feckless hipster wanders in here without a modicum of coherent thought and starts babbling about dick size and karens and race baiting and it makes more sense now. 33. Dearest Bertha, The reports are true and the worst has happened. I should have you hear the truth from mine own lips, rather than the papers of those wicked newsman. Some of the lads and lasses of our group have killed Mother God and decorated her face with the powder that glistens, and her body with the illuminating mechanical apparatuses of Christmas, so that we can see her and offer tributes without the aid of torches. She was secured inside the bag of sleeping, as Clem couldn’t keep his hands and his pecker from worshipping her holy temple in an inappropriate way. The group had become particular about the words coming out of her mouth, and the resulting action has led to my feared prognosis being proven correct. The winds were rife with rumors, and we quickly broke camp and began our march. After a short pause of half a day, I felt myself completely vigorous and rested, so that I, after some hours of rest, should again be able to put behind me five or six miles without any aggravation, for which I initially thanked the Universal High Soul and Mother God. After the march, our group numbers four men and three women. Unfortunately, even with our march, we were unable to have a good opportunity to put things in order, and the local officers of the law quickly ensnared us in their cuffs of hands. I have asked those officers of the law to keep you instructed as to my condition. I am now fully focused on repairing my clothing and occupying myself with the protection of my posterior, as some of the residents of my prison have taken a liking to me. Their tongues ask me about Mother God, but their eyes have a more personal interest. I have several times done services for others to earn the friendship of those who share my enslaved condition in the hopes that they may protect me, but it is to no avail, and I fear that the main assault is but a few hours away. My one good fortune is that my sense of smell is no longer being assaulted by the emanations arising from Mother God slowly joining her ancestors. My love always, Jebediah

  35. So many notifications about this thread today. It looks like it’s all about masks? Here’s a fascinating idea. You can think both of these things. Our leaders at the beginning, specifically Trump, should’ve pushed masks more at the beginning. Also, our leaders now should push masks less, for the vaccinated. How cool would it have been for Biden to walk out with no mask for his pseudo state of the union and say hey guess what? Everybody here is vaccinated in this big room. Y’all take your masks off and let’s talk business.

  38. I once thought like this, and understand where it comes from. Lower taxes and less regulations sounds good. It sounds responsible. it makes sense. Why wouldn’t I want to keep more money? Who likes red tape? In layman terms, spending beyond ones means is irresponsible. I have to balance my checkbook, so should the government. The reality is this viewpoint is a fallacy. Why? There are no fiscally conservative political parties. Bill Clinton might be considered the only “fiscally conservative” President in the past 100 years, but that was a bit of luck. He had control of Congress the first 2 years and passed a big stimulus and raised taxes on the rich (what Biden is trying to do now), but then Republicans had control the last 6 years so he couldn’t spend anymore. This one time stimulus preceded and helped usher in the tech boom economy and with high taxes on the rich, led to a surplus. His repeal of glass-steagall led to the Great Recession in 2008. Because regulations are created for good reason. We don’t allow chop blocks in football because it leads to injury. The Glass-Steagall act of 1933 prohibited banks from investing in risky securities (like sub-prime mortgages) because we didn’t want the banks to fail from being greedy assholes and cause the Great Depression again. And of course, history repeated itself. Unlike last time, thankfully smart fiscal policy people stepped in and the public bailed out the banking system. there are a million more example why regulations are a good thing. Don’t get me wrong, some regulations need to be more efficient, or modified or overhauled. A fiscally responsible policy means high taxes and cut spending. No political party believes in both of those. I’m not saying it’s not a good policy, it should be implemented at times, but when people say I’m “fiscally conservative” they usually mean cut spending and lower taxes, which just increases debt, and is not actually fiscally responsible.
