COVID-19 and Basketball thread

Recommended Posts

Figured this might be a good time to start a separate thread on COVID-19's impact on basketball.

Ivy League just canceled its tournament.  Yale men and Princeton women get the automatic bids.

My FIL got Final Four tickets for a 70th birthday/retirement present. It'd be pretty funny to me if he didn't get to go.

If they play these without fans do they move the F4 to a smaller gym or play it in a empty dome?

NBA games would be ridiculous in empty NBA arenas.  The F4 in a Jerry World type facility with no fans would be beyond absurd.  If the NBA decided to go the no fans route, they should play the games at the team’s practice facilities.  NCAA should do something similar.

March 10, 2020 1:13pm

NCAA member schools and conferences make their own decisions regarding regular season and conference tournament play.  As we have stated, we will make decisions on our events based on the best, most current public health guidance available. Neither the NCAA COVID-19 advisory panel, made up of leading public health and infectious disease experts in America, nor the CDC or local health officials have advised against holding sporting events. In the event circumstances change, we will make decisions accordingly.

- Mark Emmert, NCAA president

Doesn't sound as promising with more colleges closing up for the rest of the semester

I'm going to the A-10 semis at the Barclays on Saturday, which is always one of my favorite days of the year - general admission tickets so you can sit a couple rows from the court, the beer vendors sell tallboys, 2 games in a row for one ticket, it's just good relaxed fun.

Buuuut I wouldn't be surprised if it gets cancelled - the Tristate is getting more and more locked down.

Out of curiosity, I checked on Priceline last night for flight/hotel deals to Vegas for the first 2 rounds. You could book airfare from Austin (direct on Spirit and Frontier) and 4 nights hotel (W-Su) at Mandalay Bay for $600, Bellagio for $750. That's one week before the tourney starts. I'm guessing a lot of people are cancelling their March Madness excursion.

Well obviously we can't fire Shaka if they cancel the Final Four, because he was gonna make it.  We were gonna make it man!

Flying to spend a few days in a casino is probably not the world's wisest idea at the moment.

Yeah I have no plans to do so, but I was just curious what it would cost, because most years that would probably run closer to $1500-$2000 if you tried to book one week before the Madness.

Holy fuck, this is ridiculous. Just be smart, wash your hands, and go to the doctor is you get flu like symptoms. Shutting down the country is retarded.

I don't get closing the locker rooms. Is it just some way to say you did something? Isn't it the large group of spectators that is the potential issue if someone was unknowingly infected?

To further protect players from viral contact with others during play...

A "No Sweating" policy has been implemented for the Big XII Tournament.  Shaka Smart stand-around offenses are now expected to have the advantage.

Other countries have tried that. It’s not going so well.

I was on this boat. Seeing the virus utterly ravage Italy & Iran changed my mind. First clue should’ve been China (country that has never given any fucks about human life) going through unprecedented quarantines and fucking their economy. They wouldnt do that for something that was no worse than the flu. This thing is not something to take lightly.

China basically deciding to tank 1 quarters worth of economic activity was the big eye opener for me. Once they did that it was pretty clear to me that they didnt consider this just a bad flu year. This may be a big global overreaction but sometimes it pays to err on the side of caution. If they play the tourney in empty arenas, it's not gonna impact my life at all.

James said he wasn't going to play if the NBA banned fans over Corona.  He will now "listen" if that occurs.

I like lebron but that’s a bad, dumb and dangerous take. He’ll be playing in empty arenas in a week too.

Play the tourney, but without fans in arenas.  All the data I've seen says the players(except for BYU) are in the age range with almost the lowest risk.  The risk really doesn't start to rise until the mid-40's.  Have their CV advisory panel set an age cutoff, and limit the traveling squad of assistants to under that age, and perhaps put a reduced limit on the number of assistants.  Since coach's run the gamut in age, to be fair perhaps play the games without coaches in attendance but tied in on a live video feed to their team.  Give the coach's remote access to all the tv live feeds, extend timeouts by 30 seconds to accommodate the added logistics, and they can communicate with their staff and team electronically.  Not perfect, but good enough in an emergency situation.

It is a good idea to play the games for the country's morale during a time when many will likely be in some form of quarantine, whether or not by choice.  We've done similar during times of war and crisis.  And it sounds like most players still want to play.

Have the tourney committee focus on minimizing travel, and seeding secondary.   Better for a team to travel on a bus with just 1 driver than a plane with a larger crew on board.

Though if there is still a significant risk of hospitalization for that age group, say 1%, then forget all that and just cancel the games.  The low morale masses, "Let them watch NBA."  (Magic Johnson will keep those players alive.)

Playing behind closed doors if it reaches that point seems like the sensible thing.

There is the tricky issue Britain is dealing with where if you move to an Italy/China style lockdown too fast, people get complacent right when you actually need them to pay attention.

Who knows (though I'm pretty sure Dan Wolken isn't the guy America needs to be taking its pandemic mitigation advice from).

Yep. The willful ignorance of so many is insane, but not shocking.

This situation is about to get real serious real fast, people.

Interesting to see how conferences/NCAAT proceeds in near future regarding the fans, currently watching the 2008 SECT that was moved from Georgia Dome to GT campus due to tornado and UGa won like 8* games in 3 days to make it to the NCAAT and they limited the number of fans who could attend.  I remember a lot of Billy Joe Wildcat fans pissed they couldn't get in.

I guess these guys play plenty of practice without crowds, but it'll be surreal for the fans to watch these games without crowds. Will it be easier to hear cuss words and other stuff that goes on during plays? Will the players have less emotion without a crowd to pump up? Will a big game winning shot be subdued without a huge cheer afterwards? If nothing else, it will be an interesting reason to watch.
