The Irishman. It's coming.

Recommended Posts

I don't remember if we had a thread about this on the old board or not. I know I talked up the book on the old board. But this is coming to fruition and I'm psyched about it. I didn't realize filming was done and they are cutting it up right now. It's supposed to be released as a Netflix movie next Fall, with limited release in theaters.

Directed by Scorsese, based off of the book I Heard You Paint Houses , it stars Deniro as Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran, Pacino as Jimmy Hoffa, and Joe Pesci as Mafia Boss Russel Bufalino.

100% chance somebody bitches about De Niro playing an Irishman when Colin Farrell is available.

Edit: I just googled and De Niro has some Irish blood.  This awesome-sounding movie may make it to theaters after all.

I'm sure people will bitch about something. Sheeran was supposed to be a massive dude so maybe that will be it. Then again he wasn't a comic book hero or whatever like Jack Reacher so maybe not. But I'm really looking forward to it. Snapped this pic of the house after reading the book 7-8 years ago.

Probably true.

But look man. If you read the book, and you digest the details that Brandt/Sheeran laid out....there is no doubt that SOMETHING happened at that house. Maybe it wasn't the demise of Jimmy Hoffa, but for a guy who did not grow up in Detroit....to describe that shit to the level of detail that he did....yeah, that's not a guy trying to stake a claim to glory before he passes away. He could be twisting stories but between the route from the Red Fox to the left turn on 7 Mile Rd, to the description of the foot bridge on the New Rogel golf course, to the "vestibule". I'm totally inclined to believe Sheeran's version of the events. Something happened at that brown house above. And yeah they pulled the floorboards and didn't find anything but again...did he pull this shit out of thin air? Doesn't make sense.

Been waiting for this to be made for several years now. I hope like hell to be able to see it in a theater but who knows what kind of distribution Netflix will arrange?

Rumor on IMDB is that Scorsese had to ask Pesci 10-15 times to take the part. Pesci's been retired for almost 5 years now. He finally agreed to it.

From looking at his picture above it seems like his being retired was a good call.

That’s a pic of Pacino with DeNiro not Pesci.

Terrible teaser trailer, just a bit of dialogue and no footage whatsoever.

Agree but it leaves you wanting more.  That’s never a bad thing for Hollywood.

Also don't forget Jimmy was supposed to be half-Irish in Goodfellas.  :)

Good cast: In addition to Pacino, De Niro, and Peci...there's Harvey Keitel, Ray Romano, Kathrine Narducci (aka Charmaine Bucco), Bobby Cannavale, Domenico Lombardozzi (Herc from The Wire), Anna Paquin... This should be good.

Wishful thinking, but I hope they can tie in the "Lost to History" connection of this story with Sam Giancana/Chicago. .

Neflix movie? Pass

jfc scorsese has fallen.. hard

Quick...name another studio on the planet that would bankroll a $150+mm drama based on historic characters & events, with a cast & director averaging over 70 years old?  Unless you've got a comic book hero or a robot you're not getting the budget to make a movie like this from the big studios. There's almost no chance this makes a profit. Netflix is banking on it for the type of validation that comes from Academy award nominations & wins.

I read the book recently. The preview looks terrific. The fucking book and the stories intertwined inside it are fascinating, and apparently true.

I've looked into the support for Sheeran's claims and those that are dubious of them. The basic premise is that there's not enough "proof" if you're a doubter to believe his guilt/cooperation in the various events. The flip to that is that this dude knew details in every possible way around numerous mysteries that were hard to otherwise bring up, but from memory.

He knew shit that was never public. He knew details about the Crazy Joey Gallo killing that no one but the cops and witnesses knew. He was connected into the JFK assassination at Forrest Gump levels. He knew the details of Hoffa's last day, front to back (of the head). Moreover on all of this, his claims were corroborated by multiple other witnesses or accomplices.

He was also a fucking war criminal in WW2, along with everyone else he served alongside, if you believe the Geneva convention and his claims.

He told none of this for fame. He was already notrorious. He violated omerta by talking to the writer in his final years. He knew he could be indicted on many charges with what he said, had cops been able to corroborate while he was alive. He wanted to clear his fucking conscience as a Catholic, so maybe he did it.

Sheeran is a complicated character. I found myself sympathizing with him at times in the book and then it's like, wait, this guy is a mass murderer. He's basically a sociopathic serial killer sanctioned by the US Army and then the mob and the teamsters. Fuck this piece of human shit. But he can weave a narrative. Can't wait for the movie.

This, exactly.

I remember talking with friends about how Fincher was basically given 20M more per episode of Mindhunter from Netflix than any other network bidding on it.  Netflix has the money and isn't afraid to use it.  Plus these types of movies almost always play well and especially with this cast.

On another note, I lived on this block where they shot for about a month (Orchard and Broome in the Lower East Side).  They had art departments come in, put up fake building facades, paint exteriors and then have dudes out there 24/7 watching and guarding the sets.  "Umberto's Clam Shop" in the movie was right there on the NE corner of the block.  Cool to see.

The Knick (Showtime) also did something similar years back, but with horse and carriage and dirt all over.

Another greenspoint shitty hot take. I am shocked. Shocked I tell you.

Well in fairness, the trailer sure makes it look like a low budget docudrama that was hastily thrown together. A bunch of no names getting top billing. And who the fuck is the screenwriter, Steven Zaillian? That's the name of a Beverly Hills hairdresser, not a writer. Probably only written a couple episodes of 1st and Ten for HBO in the '80s.

Looked like they did some reverse aging CGI on DeNiro.

Ummm....that's probably 25% of the budget. Making De Niro, Pacino & Pesci look 30-40 years younger.

Echoing what CTJ said, the book is great.  Definitely watching this.

I'm currently listening to the book on Audio app. This guy either lived one of the most interesting lives ever, or he is a compulsive liar.  Either way, it's great so far.

Hoping for middle class man's Goodfellas. We'll probably, literally get Hoffa. I can live with this.

Read the book. Watch the movie. Enjoy yourself.

Side bar :  Stop giving giving English actor Stephen Graham roles as Italian Americans. The guy is OK. but unless you want Hugh Jackson playing Carlo Gambino, it needs to stop somewhere. What made the Sopranos somewhat authentic was Italian actors from Jersey and New York.

Further side bar : Tony Pro and Russel Bufalino were some of the baddest mofos in the history of organized crime.

Provenzano was actually wise and effective beyond his rank, background, and skill set.  He was the envy of everybody from the Genoveses to the Giancanas and everyone in between.

Russel Bufalino has been overglorified time and time again because he is just an easy mark to portray on film because nobody had anything good or bad to say about him, just indifference.  He fucked up every trying outfit from Philly to Syracuse that he touched, including ours.  Now he managed to stay alive and keep earning, so I'll say that for him.  But he was just a constant shitheap from the word go.  He never met a labor deal he could fuck up.  He was just the old guy that kept doing just enough to stay alive to the next sitdown.  He was a fucking idiot and with any luck, he's rotting in hell.

Anyway, I look forward to this picture and the celebration of Italian-Americans' contributions to organized labor.  God bless them one and all.  But the Irishman?  He's aces in my book.

This. Masterpiece over and over again. Holding strong at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The general consensus from the Scorsese heads is that it’s a reflective, and melancholic character study from the master. Pacino kills and steals the movie.

Casual audiences will probably complain about the following: limited release in theaters, long running time, and its not Goodfellas/Casino 2.0.

It looks like the film is being released in New York and Los Angeles only on November 1st.

According to the film’s website there won’t be a theatrical release in Texas. The closest theater is in New Orleans on November 15th.

So yeah, it looks like most of us have to wait to watch it on Netflix on Thanksgiving.
