Unfortunately Austin is going to be one of the first large showcases of the abject incompetence of this administration. SXSW is a $350+ million dollar stimulus to the Austin economy. Many small businesses invest heavily to attempt to profit from the event and now all those costs are simply not going to produce the planned revenue. A lot of bars and small businesses that get the overflow will see one of the biggest profit weeks of the year turn into the dust of unrecoverable expenses. This will be seen on a large scale, and it will be replicated on a smaller scale all around the country and the true extent of the spread becomes clearer as testing begins to catch up. Right now I nearly view Trump's Presidency as over. This thing is loose and is not going back in the box. In my mind there are probably 8-10,000 infected people right now with mild or no symptoms in our country. All having the ability to spread the disease. We haven't had enough kits , and still don't to test the contacts of all the KNOWN infected. If you can't do that, then you have no ability to control the spread, as you can't identify who should be isolated. This FACT is going to become much more clear as time goes on. By the election we should be on the backside (hopefully) of the infection, and things will be getting back to normal. Except a lot of the small businesses you used to frequent will no longer exist. Unemployment will be spiking, and the costs that those most on the frontlines of contact (the working poor in restaurant and retail) get their unpayable health care bills. I don't think Pence is going to be able to take all the blame for this FUBAR. This pandemic is going to highlight the fact the GOP does not give a fuck about facts, not a fuck about healthcare, and that their love of lies and misinformation was a poor plan indeed. The one thing I will plea everyone here to do going forward. Give local small businesses your money. They do not have the luxury of having the profits of another location to offset their losses. Often they have very little in reserves and a couple bad months can shut them down. So give them your patronage rather than the chains and help your friends and neighbors survive what is going to be a very tough slog looking ahead. If you do not, many of them will not survive.12 points

you guys don’t seem to fully grasp how much it just absolutely owns the libs to have a President who is super fat and stupid, shits his pants in public, is a complete embarrassment on the world stage, and sells out the country on the reg. -Republicans12 points

South Korea is not testing 10,000 plus a day for shits and giggles. And trying to increase that number. We should be testing, because every person you can find, doesn’t mean you’ve stopped them from spreading already, but it means you might keep that person from spreading it to one more person, who then doesn’t spread it to 10 others, and so on I don’t know at this point if it’s incompetence or not wanting the public to know the numbers, but the whole testing thing stinks, and how they are counting stinks. The President of the United States is out there on national TV saying he cares more about the numbers doubling than getting people off of a ship and into treatment. There’s so much going on with that, just kind-bottling. I’ll leave it at that - his statements speak for themselves. But when you see a healthcare provider saying it’s endemic and they see no point in testing and the numbers don’t matter, that’s not about their patients, that’s about trying to salvage their reputation and possible financial responsibility The families of those folks are starting to scream bloody murder, and that shit is going to be out there. It’s a lot harder to cover up these days The media loves grieving families This head-in-the-sand approach is not logical, given our lack of open beds to handle this. Testing is not about stopping it, it’s about getting it slowed down so our healthcare system can cope. Austin could probably handle a few hundred cases over a month, given those folks need 2-3 weeks in the hospital. We can’t handle a few hundred cases a week. And we won’t take the hard measures needed to try and stop it, so we’ve got to try and slow it down and buy our hospitals time. And that means testing to get as many people isolated at home as we can.9 points

Our middle school packed up 80 kids and adult/ teacher support on 2 buses and drove down 500 miles on Friday so that they could do the "Explore UT" event today. At 5:20 yesterday afternoon, basically as they arrived to Austin; they were told the event had been cancelled, due to precautions around the coronavirus. Of course, everyone from our school was crestfallen. This morning someone with the State Capital reached out to them and said they would give the students a tour today. The University of Texas added that our kids would be treated to tickets to the Okie Lite/ UT game this afternoon. What could have been a miserable day has turned into a day the kids will likely never forget, mainly due to people being generous with their time and resources. For all the rivalrous banter and shit we talk on here, Way to go, Bevo & Company!!!7 points

Other reasons testing is important: 1. To identify common characteristics among those who test positive to be able to advise who is most at risk, who might want to stay at home vs go to the Longhorn season opener, etc.., 2. This is not our last viral outbreak. If we understand the characteristics and measurables of this one, we can better identify, assess and react to those in the future. It is never a bad idea to have more data and knowledge about a problem (this coronavirus) or classes of problems (viral outbreak and pandemic). Especially when this class of problems has a future potential to threaten life as we know it. This is bad, the next one could be much worse. It might be goodbye honey, goodbye junior, goodbye bro instead of just goodbye mom.7 points

For real you people saying to stop testing are just ignorant. Lots of people still think this isn't a big deal and dont get why SXSW was cancelled. St. Louis cancelled social gatherings immediately when Spanish flu was detected. Philly down played it. Testing and social distancing is the right thing to do.7 points

It’s fucking comical watching other people shit talk how Houston would handle a region-wide crisis. Houston had a fucking curfew after Ike. People lived with it as supplies in the region dwindled and stores were completely closed. Same thing with Harvey. It just handled a full city-wide boil notice on a weekend without a hint of controversy. We don’t have to predict how Houston will handle a fucking thing. Now, predicting how the dipshits on this thread will spin out if the mayor of Austin sneezes? Chaos. Complete, bawling, handwringing chaos, buttressed by even more hyperbolic doomsday predictions and absolute declarations of a full-blown federal conspiracy with Trump as some sort of genius mastermind pulling strings behind the scenes. That one is an easy call.6 points

It’s not exactly about waking Trumpkins up and changing their minds; it’s like the constant drumbeat Republicans deployed against Hillary Clinton. 99% of the crap they spewed about her was either exaggerated or flat out lies but that messaging being constantly dripped into the public’s ears effected the way voters perceived her. So people who aren’t politically engaged and who aren’t solidly aligned with one party but do show up to vote for president every four years either voted for Trump or third party or left the choice for president blank. Democrats don’t have 10 years to blast this message but 9 months of Bloomberg ad buys will seep into those voters brains. Look what two months of his ads did for his poll numbers. If he weren’t such a terrible debater with negative charisma he could very well be sitting where Biden is right now. Because let’s face it, his ads were everywhere and they were pretty damn good. Bloomberg is a complete toadstool of a human being but if he truly puts his money behind blanketing the airwaves and the Internet and social media with blistering anti-Trump ads then give that toadstool the Presidential Medal of Freedom.6 points

I picked Biden enthusiastically because Trump is so bad by comparison. Simply saying he’s the lesser of two evils feels insufficient to communicate the degree of difference between them. To be clear, Biden still sucks and the likelihood of a more competent fascist wing of the GOP growing while Biden tries to meet them halfway on shit like a good ol boy scares the hell out of me.6 points

If you’re innocent you have nothing to worry about. Well except for maybe being wrongly accused and forced to spend a fortune on lawyers and then maybe being convicted anyway. Or maybe having your cash confiscated for no reason and used to buy a margarita machine for the sheriffs department. Or maybe being shot to death for no reason while you sit in your apartment. Or possibly having an imaginary CI say they bought heroin from you.5 points

F**king aggy "space lab" ... They lobbied and whined to get the *awesome* Shuttle Mission Simulator sent up to aggyland. And, it has sat *UNBOXED AND COLLECTING DUST* since 2012. I have friends who are trying to get aggy to release it back to the Lone Star Flight Museum (at Ellington, near JSC) for at least a static display. I'm sure it'll have aggy shit plastered all over it ("donated by the amazing and awesome generosity of aggy", etc.). It also turns out that aggy stored all of the *priceless* equipment in a *NON CLIMATE-CONTROLLED FACILITY*, which makes returning it to any sort of working condition almost a non-starter. This effort was over a year ago, without any updates, so I can only presume they were unsuccessful, either in getting aggy to release it or getting the funds necessary to restore it from its aggy-overseen-and-deteriorating condition back to something that someone would be willing to actually pay to see.5 points

exactly. Republicans have made it crystal fucking clear that there is no one to “reach across the aisle” to, and nothing to talk about. vote out as many as you can, and ignore and marginalize the rest. 100% of them act in bad faith at all times.5 points

In a reddit thread about why other counties are getting their test results back much quicker than Travis County, one of you must have posted this (maybe @Armybrat ) “For each test, they have to do an environmental impact statement, get a code compliance officer to check it, decide how it works with CodeNEXT, check it for cultural sensitivity, and hire consultants to do a study. They're also looking for free-range, cruelty-free, fair-trade, organic, gluten-free testing materials. They're also not allowed to use single-use plastic items in the process, so they have to use 1950's style reusable needles and glass syringes, which take a long time to sterilize between patients. Then to top it off, for some reason Capital Metro is running the process and it's REALLY screwed up. Don't worry, they're using the same lab that handles rape kits, so the process will be fixed any day now.”5 points

Well, Beto and Kamala were absolute savaged by bad faith bullshittery from the left wing from the moment they announced and unfortunately those narratives stuck. Pete eventually got the same treatment but the attacks came much later once he became a threat. (And, yeah, I’m a hypocrite because I’m okay with his downfall because at least he got a chance to show himself before the Twitterati ate him alive.) And running a campaign based on copying another candidate’s platform is dumb and doomed to fail if those beliefs aren’t sincerely held. Look at Warren. Beto and Kamala basically shared 85-90% of the same goals but maybe had different plans to achieve them so they were thrown in the bin as “centrist neoliberal shitlibs”. Too bad. I bet the Bernie camp and every other Democrat would prefer one of them to have been the “compromise candidate” over Biden. Because not only are they much closer to what Bernie stands for than Biden, they’re also smarter, better speakers and debaters, and not 107 years old. Hindsight’s a bitch.5 points

It's revenge. And I'm perfectly fine with that in this case. Some crimes are so horrific that a measured amount of revenge is a valid legal consequence. He's not being executed, and we're not even doing anything except sending him back to Germany. If they want to punish him, they can do so. We're simply saying that we will under no circumstances knowingly allow Nazi concentration camp guards who enabled the Holocaust to live comfortably within our borders.4 points
