Not really sure what all of this "let's have a conversation" is supposed to mean. We're a republic because we're larger than a village and thus have too many people to make direct democracy work. So, we elect a bunch of people who are supposed to figure out what to do in situations like this. They're supposed to have personnel and protocols in place to weigh the costs and benefits of various alternatives and determine the best course of action. But nearly every place Republicans are in charge, they've largely decided to wing it. To the extent they really care about anything, they've been motivated by helping businesses, but they don't even really want to think through what would help businesses. It's just too much work for them and apparently thinking hurts their brains, so they just decided to go with a shitload of wishful thinking. The answer to the problem wasn't going to be easy, but it was always simple: Lock down for a time, use that time to surge hospital capacity, the production of necessary supplies and equipment, and test and trace capabilities, and develop effective logistics to ensure that everything gets delivered to those who need it. While locked down, the government could backstop everything: suspend mortgages and rent, guarantee payroll, etc. A real testing and tracing system would give people confidence that, when things re-opened, the risk of going back out in the world would be minimal and more federal aid at that point would've been unnecessary. Of course, that all would have required competent messaging from our officials explaining why we need to lock down and what that time will give us the opportunity to do, and real diligence from government officials at all levels to make sure all that shit got done. However, Republican officials in most states are simply incapable of doing anything with competence and the ones that are capable of competence recognize that actually doing their job competently would put the lie to their decades of propaganda about how government can't do anything right. So this is what we got. The closest we've come to accomplishing any of what we needed to do while locked down is that we've ramped up hospital capacity (though it's not clear if we've done enough) and established a black market by which cities, states, and hospitals can acquire a fraction of the supplies they need at extortionate costs, which go into the pockets of politically connected GOP donors. There's been no real effort to establish a capable testing and tracing system that would allow us to safely re-open in phases. You still can't find any fucking hand sanitizer on store shelves. Nevertheless, we're trying to YOLO this shit and using the threat of cutting off unemployment benefits to force retail and service workers back to jobs in dangerous conditions, in the hope that business will just magically return to normal for everyone if we pretend that it's all done. But very few people are actually going to pretend. Many of us are going to stay in our homes most to all of the time. So those stores and restaurants that now have to re-open because they've got to pay rent are going to be incurring normal operating costs but only bringing in a fraction of the revenue they need, because most people don't feel safe to go out. And those people who do go out are going to spread covid not just among themselves but also to those we've forced back to work, many of whom live with at-risk family members, and to the medical professionals who inevitably have to treat them. So we're going to see a new spike in cases, when it happens everyone will panic again, and we'll probably end up shutting shit back down again for an indeterminate length of time. And we'll probably repeat the same stupid pattern until a vaccine is produced in sufficient quantities to inoculate most people. This slapdash bullshit doesn't help anyone because it's not a choice between keeping everyone healthy and keeping the economy healthy. If we had done it right, we could've endured a few months of pain and then recovered relatively quickly. Instead, we're going to see a death toll in the hundreds of thousands and the economy is going to sink into a depression. All because Republicans don't want anyone to realize that anything better was actually possible.24 points

Ooooh, sexist and stupid! Here’s some histrionics for you - you’re the worst kind of moron. A moron who doesn’t know they’re a moron but still feels the compulsion to contaminate everyone else with their stupidity. You’re mean, you’re clueless, you’re selfish, you’re incurious, and you’re boring. No woman worth a damn would ever willingly want to have sex with you for pleasure. They only do it out of pity, for a transaction, or to have a story to tell their friends about the dumb mean half-man they suffered through. You’re the absolute perfect Trumpkin. You’re sure to take that as a compliment but know that, as usual, you will be wrong. So take this message with a the histrionic effort I can muster - fuck you, eat shit, and go read a book.17 points

QFMF truth. Trumpkins, this is you. You aren't WRONG about your frustration with Democratic governance....what you are oh-so wrong about is that you think that being used and abused as a pawn is an improvement. It's like the poor gal with daddy issues. Daddy abandoned her, so she's thrilled to be with the abuser who tells her she's sexy and pimps her out to his friends and anyone else with $50, because hey, he tells me I'm pretty, he loves me! Before, you were a neglected daughter. To solve that problem, you decided to become an abused prostitute. And you celebrate this as an improvement in your lot in life. SMDH.11 points

Well I have largely quit posting on this subject, because watching the endless avoidance of the obvious is just too frustrating to rehash here. The problem is still exactly the same, we need real testing to reopen the economy. The pushed half ass Russian Roulette methodology that is what has been decided on instead. A strategy that is sadly doomed to fail to do much other than ensure that I will be able to come weekly here in August decrying the lack of testing. Week after week lost, turns into month after month lost, because people are not going to go out until they feel a sense of security. Going to Academy, out to dinner, or anywhere else where the risk involves death is simply not something you can sell via bloviation. You have to have people be confident, to get our economy moving again. South Korea is going to be economically kicking our ass in another month or so as they get back to work, and we flounder due to lack of confidence, due to lack of solid risk information, due to.... lack of fucking testing. Sadly we will eventually get testing, we will just piss away extra trillions to do the obvious. What will get us there you ask? Dead, country boy, gun toting, freedom loving, no pussy mask wearing, good old boys who listen and trust President Trump. Unfortunately only those people dying might compel the President to do what has been obvious since early January. Not sure how high the death toll has to go before Trump's tiny brain can link the economy to adequate testing. Sort of sick knowing that the only hope to save the country right now is the widespread death of good ole boys...9 points

The hospitals are not the doctors - I'd love to see how hospitals ask doctors to classify more deaths are COVID. I mean I'm running a group with several hundred physicians/APP's and I handle the contracts/conversations with hospitals. It's usually my name on contracts and my ass sitting in the meetings. Our group has treated many Covid patients and I can't imagine under any circumstance having that type of conversation. I mean what fucking world do these dipshits live in?9 points

I jumped ahead a few pages so I don’t know if chitowndoc answered before me. IMO it’s dangerous to publish this paper to the general public. Technically everything they “speculate” in this paper could happen but that would require virus mutations atypical from what usually goes on in the wild. It also doesn’t speak to how much the mutations can avoid previous immunity from initial strains of Covid. I can also tell you that scientists are very human and prone to group think and logical fallacies in their work when they get excited about getting published with exciting discoveries. One of the hallmarks of solid research is replication of data by independent researchers consistent with initial discoveries. They also should be able to maintain neutrality about their own biases. It doesn’t always happen.7 points

Well, the thing is, he wore that mask on March 4 prior to voting on the emergency appropriations funding. He later walked the publicity stunt back after not only being exposed to a positive COVID carrier, but also getting into an argument on Fox with Christopher Hahn, and then one of his constituents passing away from the virus. It was a PR stunt by someone with a sophomoric sense of humor and entitlement and he was only sorry after the fire got too hot for him. Some context: March 4: 158 cases; 11 deaths April 4: 311,544 cases; 8488 deaths May 4: 1,180,288 cases; 68,922 deaths You may excuse him for that petty childish behavior when by March 4, Kelly Loeffler had already dumped her stock over a month earlier and the seriousness of the virus was more than apparent due to briefings to the Senate and the House by intel committees and the CDC, but I won't. He and the GOP have been sorry assed, dishonest, and boorish during a time when American citizens are suffering from a variety of misfortunes due to this pandemic.6 points

This is basically what I am dealing with every day nowadays. No, banks are not giving relief. At least our lenders are not. Any restructuring of loans still results in full payment of the mortgage over the same remaining term. Passing that on to tenants is giving them relief that we are not getting ourselves. I have renegotiated at least a dozen leases in the last 3 weeks either deferring rent to a defined period and payback schedule (at 0% interest), or in some cases extending leases (with credit tenants) and accelerating some or all of concessions due in the extension period to now, whether that be free rent or tenant improvement dollars that can be converted. Or if tenants have free rent scheduled for a future month (we usually spread the free rent over the term to minimize risk), we are moving some of that forward. But it is on a case-by-case basis and depends on how we feel about the long term viability of the tenant. But the perception that the big bad landlords have unlimited deep pockets to whether this is misplaced. All of our properties are individual partnerships made up of syndicates, some of which are Wall St investment funds and some of which are mom and pop retirees. We've had to cut distributions to people that depend on them in order to preserve cash. Some tenants have simply elected to not pay and there's currently nothing we can do about it. And when we can, the courts are likely to be logjammed for years with unlawful detainer actions stemming from this. We are going to be working our way out of this for years. We have been judicious in distributing/spending capital reserves, so we are well positioned for the most part, but that doesn't mean we have to pass that judiciousness on to tenants. Because how do we decide who gets it and who doesn't? We can't give it to them all, so restructured deferments are the only practical solution. I should clarify this is commercial space. Mostly office, with some retail.6 points

In the late 70's I lived in Chicago. One of the players was from a nearby town close to our hometown in Mississippi and lived very close to us in Chicago. He contacted us somehow and hired my sister to help his wife with their kids during the day (no lights at Wrigley). He would come over to our house in the morning and pick up me and a friend or two, along with my sister, then head over to his house and drop my sister off. Then his neighbor, also a player for the Cubs, would join us for the drive to the North side. I spent the better part of 2 summers, aged 9 and 10, going to just about every Cubs home weekday game. We'd go in through the players' entrance and roam the stadium until they opened the gates, then we'd go to Will Call and get our tickets and head back in. Those were great times.6 points

I don't know how it's working for all mortgages, but the common way i'm seeing COVID relief in other asset classes is simply deferring payments for X months with missed payments tacked on to the end of the (extended) term. That seems to be how it should work.6 points

When it comes to polling hard to ignore that no polling showed Trump with much of a chance. I think people are saying what they think pollsters want to hear, but their actions will be quite different. Its human nature to be fatigued at this point. Most people outside of NY probably dont know anyone who has gotten sick from this. Hard to get past the idea that this is not a front and center thing to them. On that note I did check the official Illinois stats and noted that for my age and ethnic demographic the total deaths is 43, out of a total population of 12 million. You cant stay closed indefinitely and destroy the economy for a decade with numbers like that. Its too far on the other end of the risk/reward spectrum. We dont all have the same risk profile. Now comes the part where we go with the best info we have and start to put humpty dumpty back together again, even knowing we will have rolling shutdowns.6 points

Get out of here with the utter bullshit. The mental gymnastics that you do to justify your shit is delusionally impressive. Below is verbatim from the first DA's letter on Feb 23rd. He seemed to have enough evidence to think it was all perfectly legal. He didn't seem to need to wait for evidence. Notice the last sentence where the piece of shit DA blames the victim. It's May 6 and still no charges. The only reason this is being discussed is because of the news focus. If there had been no video evidence, this would have been just another example racist pieces of shits killing a black man because he was black and getting away with it and you would have no problems with it. Second As to the case at hand: Itismy professional belief the autopsy confirms what wehad already viewed as shown in the video tape, with the photographs & from the witness statements taken immediately atthe scene. The autopsy supports the initial opinion we gave you on February 24th, 2020 atthe briefing room in the Glynn County Police Department after reviewing the evidence you had at that time. Wedo not see grounds for an arrest of any of the three parties. Third It appears Travis McMichael,Greg McMichael, and Bryan William were following, in pursuit burglary suspect, with solid firsthand probable cause, in theirneighborhood, and asking/ tellinghim to stop. Itappearstheir intentwas to stop and hold this criminal suspectuntil law enforcement arrived. UnderGeorgia Law this is perfectly legal, OCGA 17 -4 -60 A private personmay arrest an offender if the offense is committed in his presence or within his immediate knowledge . If the offense is a felony and the offender is escaping or attempting to escape, a private person may arresthim upon reasonable and probable grounds of suspicion .” Fourth It clearly appears Travis McMichael and Greg McMichaelhad firearmsbeing carried in an open fashion . The investigation showsneither of them to be convicted felons or under felony supervision , they were in a motor vehicle owned by Travis McMichael. UnderGeorgia Law this is legalopen carry . OCGA 16- 11- 126 ) Any person whoisnotprohibitedby law from possessinga handgun orlonggun may have or carry on his or her person a weapon orlong gun on his orherproperty or insidehis orher home, motorvehicle, orplaceof business withouta valid weaponscarry license. (b ) Any personwho isnotprohibited by law from possessinga handgun or longgun may haveor carry on his or her person a long gun withouta valid weaponscarry license, provided thatifthe long gun is loaded, it shall only be carried in an open and fully exposedmanner.” 2 of 3 Fifth The video made by William Bryan clearly shows the shooting in realtime. From said video it appears Ahmaud Arbery was running along the right side of the McMichael truck then abruptly turns 90 degrees to the left and attacks Travis McMichaelwho was standing at the front left corner ofthetruck . A brief skirmish ensues in which it appear Arbery strikes McMichael and appears to grab the shotgun andpull it from McMichael The shot is through Arbery s right hand palm which is consistent with him grabbing and pulling the shotgun at the barrel tip , the 2nd and 3rd wounds are consistentwith the struggle for the shotgun as depicted in the video , the angle of the 2nd shot with the rear of the buttstock being pushed away and down from the fight arealso consistent with the upward angle ofblood plume shown in the video and that McMichael was attempting to push the gun away from Arbery while Arbery was pulling it toward himself. The 3rd shot too appears to be in a struggle over the gun. The angle of the shots and the video show this was from the beginning or almost immediately became-- a fight over the shotgun . Given the fact Arbery initiated the fight, at the point Arbery grabbed the shotgun, under Georgia Law , McMichael was allowed to use deadly force to protect himself. Just as importantly, while weknow McMichael had his finger on the trigger, we do notknow who caused the firings. Arbery would only had to pull the shotgun approximately 1/ 16th to 1/ 8th of one inch to fire weapon himself and in the height of an altercation this is entirely possible. Arbery s mental health records & prior convictions help explain his apparent aggressive nature and his possible thought pattern to attack an armed man .6 points

I am FAR from an Abbott fan -- I think he's been beyond disappointing, has displayed petty tyrant tendencies, and has gleefully become a Trump sycophant. All of that said....we were going to do a phased-in reopening no matter what, no matter who was governor. And I think it's generally the right thing to do. I have some issues with how it's being done, how ready we are, and how basic responsibility has NOT been adequately communicated to the public, but I find the GENERAL approach reasonable. And yes, some of the reasoning is because his "no gestapo on Bastropo" base is yelling at him, the donor class is yelling at him, etc. But the truth remains: we can't stay in lockdown forever, because the economic and social/mental consequences will end up killing people as well. We have to strike a balance. He may not be on target with the exact balance that I would strike, but he's not so far off the mark that I think he's being nuts/evil. Oh, and as to the points that folks are making that "Texas started reopening, cases went up," understand that "confirmed cases" are a creature of TWO factors: 1) the number of people being infected, and 2) the number of people being tested. We have dramatically increased the number of people being tested. So of course the number of "confirmed cases" will go up. We do not yet know if we're seeing a material increase in infections. I'm sure we will see some - it's a natural consequence of increased human contact. But "more cases" isn't a bad thing in and of itself. In this circumstance, it's "more cases to a level that we see spikes that threaten the hospital system" that we have to look for. The numbers to watch are the numbers hospitalized, in ICU, and deaths. So, in summary, just because Abbott is a truly shitty, disappointing governor, doesn't mean that he got this all wrong.6 points

Just double checked to make sure I was in CR which I’ve said I would always avoid. I lied I guess but I can go forward - we need a treatment or vaccine. That’s it. Until we have one or both of those everyone can argue how it would be better or worse depending on who is president or governor or 29 yr old county whatever. we needed a leader that had the balls to say we just don’t know yet what’s going on, but we are trying to figure it out. It’s political suicide but better than this shitshow. We needed a Peggy Noonan points of light speech that might galvanize the country or at least sound good. Did Trump forget to hire anyone to write for him? Tremendously? It’ll be a miracle. Or maybe just fucking someone to say “Hey, stay home. Don’t travel. If you have to work do it and if you don’t you know what, stay the fuck home. And if you are sick, really stay the fuck home. “ Instead we have this mishmash of rules and orders and here we are hoping for good weather so this shit doesn’t blow up. It’s square one, after 6 motherfucking weeks of stay-at-home, which I did, and it’s still not clear whether it’s ok or even legal for me to go to the damn pool.
