  1. Spot on. And if I can piggyback on this... The Republicans have, since the time of Reagan, and with the help of Fox news, waged a war on intellectualism. They openly mock university professors for being a bunch of liberal intellectual elitists. Think about that! They've actually managed to turn the fact that the majority of highly educated people are liberals, not conservatives, into a condemnation. This is not to say that there aren't highly intelligent Republicans. There certainly are. The problem is that they're a bunch of scumbags who are happy to brainwash the stupid into believing a bunch of lies (and the smart ones at the top know they're lies, make no mistake) so that they have the numbers to win elections and continue to profit off of the system. They've coached the stupid for years to be distrustful of the smart. When a scientist tells you that the climate is warming at an alarming rate because of our burning of fossil fuels, you can't trust them... That story is on CNN and MSNBC, and they're a bunch of libtards, and it's not on Fox News, and we're Fair and Balanced, so clearly that story must be bullshit. You just go fill up your King Cab right now and don't worry about it. If anyone ever doubted that the Republicans are a bunch of anti-intellectuals, the fact that Betsy DeVos was made Secretary of Education and the Republicans didn't howl, "what the actual fuck?!" along with the rest of us should've put that one to bed. They're no longer satisfied badmouthing highly educated people so that the stupid stay that way. Now they're trying to make sure there are no more highly educated people in this country at all. Pretty much everyone on the Republican side at this point is either stupid or evil enough to take advantage of the stupid. You don't like that? Well, if you vote for Trump again this fall, you don't have a leg to stand on. You're stupid or you're a piece of shit. Which is it?

  7. so let me get this straight... biden makes a ridiculous, offensive statement basically saying "i'm better for black america than trump". i point out that while ridiculous, it is accurate, and certainly more accurate than trump's statement about jewish people. bt asks me to clarify, then takes shots at me, and at biden's statement. then when pushed, finally agrees with biden's assessment after all. then accuses me of some sort of troll setup, and then confuses things by saying i'm the one painted into a corner. are we all caught up?

  9. OU is an inbred wasteland of stupidity masquerading as a school to play football. The entire shit stain of a state is temporarily propped up by the oil and gas industry but eventually will return to meth induced sister fucking and exploiting native Americans

  10. There's a huge difference in being outdoors at a beach and a tightly packed in stadium where everyone is screaming, cheering, high fiving, and congregating in tiny concourses and bathrooms. A Champions League match in Italy in mid-February has been pointed to as the epicenter of infections in the region of Italy that fans of both clubs travelled to so they could attend the match. Unless something dramatically changes, there won't be fan attended games this year.

  12. My first experience in Waco was an ISU/Baylor game at Floyd Casey. It was the most depressing backdrop for college football I’ve seen. Within 20 minutes of being there, our entire group felt like there was an eerie vibe. Like we were on a haunted Native American burial ground. There were more ISU fans tailgating than Baylor fans. There was a strand of porta-pots with no one around them, so I headed that way to piss. When I open the door, there’s a little old lady in an 1800’s style dress taking a deuce. I stand there shocked in frozen terror, and she just silently glared and looked me right in the eye. I took off screaming. That’s Waco, to me.

A go-to when hungry yet lazy: pair of frozen burritos heated up in the microwave, smothered in cheese (in this case, Tillamook pepper jack), heated up some more, and then drenched in hot sauce** and topped with something green. ** Louisiana Red Dot is my favorite for this application. Odd as hell, I know, but it just works.

  16. One of the funniest things about the GOP turning masks into a culture war thing is that like half their base probably already had a bunch of masks at home with the punisher logo on them, or were otherwise “tacticool,” and couldn’t wait for an excuse to wear them in public. But Trump thought he’d look like a pussy if he wore a mask, so now they’ve got to pretend masks are for gay liberal Jews and burn them I guess.

  17. First off and foremost a salute to all those that have served our Country. To those that gave the ultimate sacrifice, and the families that also felt the loss, my humble and heartfelt appreciation. It's is also wise to remember on this solemn day the importance of carefully and wisely exercise our military power. 2nd wave now assured. Well Trump's message is getting though perfectly to the sheep that insist LOUDLY that "we are not sheep!" Having listened to a college educated man enjoy a few beverages over the weekend I found out the following. 1) They don't need to wear a mask, it's a hoax. If they feel sick they will wear a mask. - So they don't know the very basics of why this virus is more dangerous, BECAUSE of asymptomatic transmission by people that "don't feel sick." This lack of basic knowledge by watching Fox and listening to Rush is staggering to a science based and informed person like myself. 2) The media won't even cover the virus once Biden is elected! The news coverage will just disappear and so well the virus. 3) Bill Gates has a patent (or trademark it was confusing) on the vaccine! When I pointed out that there were dozens upon dozens of different entities trying to develop a vaccine, they simply is NOT a vaccine to patent. Just false shit that was fed to the Fox/Rush herd. But this college educated father honestly believes these falsehoods. 4) We are grossly over counting the virus. People are being classified as dying form the virus when they had cirrhosis of the liver! I counter we are grossly undercounting the virus, specifically in states with Republican Governors where the numbers are being purposefully deflated. Again giving specific examples. The "I don't like your facts begins to arise." 5) It would be great if he could buy into Medicare early, because retirement young is so expensive because of the $18K a year cost for insurance coverage his retired buddy pays. It's a fairly legitimate number for a non-group family plan. This is the fault of... wait for it... Obamacare! It was supposed to fix all this! 6) We have to get the economy back open! It was stupid to shut it down and it's the Dems fault. I retort, "Well when you do the dumbest fucking things possible you aren't left with any good choices because of the dumb fucking choices you already made. I never wanted to shut down the economy, but shitting the bed on testing was the problem and lack of pushing for PPE in January was malpractice." Mumble, mumble response, to which I sarcastically respond. "I am a fucking genius! I was smarter than anyone in the Trump administration! I saw this coming off news reports back in early January the SECOND I heard anything out of China I knew it was bad." I think the reply was Obama... something cop board bare. 7) "I don't know anyone who has had the virus." To which I respond, you will. Especially if people are not careful. I state that this will spread through rural communities, even though they live a normal life of self-isolation. The older age and need for the occasional central gathering in these rural areas will provide the opportunity for a concentrated spread. In other words, it will be Republican areas next. I think that visually it may potentially be worse in the rural areas, where reductions in medicare reimbursements have shuttered and removed so many hospital beds. The young kids leave the rural areas so the populations are older and the hospital beds fewer. I point out the "good news" that a lot of those folks may die at home, and not be counted as coronavirus deaths, so that's good GOP news. So we are going to have exactly the outcome we tried to avoid by shutting down the damn economy. A monster second wave. Folks are watching and emulating our Presidents example of 'no mask, no worries." Fox News and the talk radio hosts also hide safely and encourage that the masks are silliness. So the Trump plan is to get everyone back to normal. Just do what you would normally do, and a mask is for pussy Democrats. Not going to a crowded church is for pussy Dems (snd the Trump family as a whole) we need folks to get out there and get the economy going. So expect all the glimmers of college football to disappear by August 1st. Sucks that we had to go right back to the dumbest thing possible. But when the President of the United States makes all his decisions without facts or knowledge, you get a lot of fucking stupid decisions. I was hoping that I would lose some money on my shorting the market and buy back into a Bull Market and enjoy college football this Fall. Instead I am going to risk a hair more going short as 40% of our population believe the 7 things I listed above. So we are going to act exactly as our President did during January and February, we are going to pretend that there is nothing wrong. We could open up much more safely if everyone wore masks to PROTECT OTHERS. But the message from the President is a mask is a form of political protest. SO find a hobby, there won't be college football this fall. Unless you think parents letting their kids risk infection and infecting their families is a risk they are going to take? The reason? Is too many people view NOT wearing a mask as some sort of a "non-sheep badge of honor" BECAUSE they (like our President) do not grasp the simple fact that they are gong to be a big part of the future spread. The saddest thing is that if our President would simply lead with a good mask wearing example this terrible isolation and economic damage might have been worth it, and we could truly start to mend. We might have even been able to have college football (slim tough it may have been). Instead we are gonna see a lot of Facebook confessions from our right leaning friends as they do indeed "know somebody" touched by the virus. Basically the virus is going to start touching white people, and white men in particular more broadly as we reopen. Don't be surprised to see even Trump donning a mask after it's too late to set a good example. Sucks that it could have been so different.

  18. It's really cringey to watch people try to sound smart while they just bull bullshit facts out of their ass. The Paleocene - that period of time, as you know, which directly follows the end-Cretaceous extinction event - had nothing remotely resembling an ice age. Nor did the Eocene, Oligocene, or Miocene. You're only off by roughly 55 million years or so.

  19. So today will be like this: Most of the waking day - hit/miss showers, breaks of sun, cooler (highs in low-mid 80's today), humid. Late late night (later than last night) storms firing up west of us come through again. This time the trigger is a mild cool front that'll sag down after midnight and provide needed lift. Chances good for scattered heavy rain, severe storms, for most of us not that but another definite rain event. While we're at it: Tuesday again a repeat of Monday, with late night/early morning potent storms heading in. I suspect much outdoor stuff can be done today, but as usual for Memorial Day around here (did you get that? Good.) keep radar/communication handy after noon, when diurnal heating can cause - well, can cause what it caused yesterday. About half of the reported rain sites within a 30 mile radius of Austin have totals in 24 hours that exceeded even the "wet" models' predictions. So yeah, it rained in Austin, and often does. Also the NWS forecasts were pretty accurate - no one was calling for more than a 30% chance of rain, and hadn't for the previous 36 hours when the models were updated, before Sunday afternoon. It really wasn't supposed to rain much until Sunday afternoon/evening. Spot.On. Good work to those guys. Looks like though Round Rock and N/NE of Austin got kind of a donut hole, not much rain relatively speaking (.50" avg.). Don't worry, you got a good shot tonight. The rest of the week is hit/miss - that cutoff low looks now to be parked more east in Texas, which means Austin will be on the "dryer" side. Of course at this point it doesn't much matter, we got the rain, but even being on the drier side, we can still get rounds like we had last night. This extends at least into Wednesday, and even lingers almost to next weekend. May rain totals in Austin are now almost double average, and rain is our wettest month of the year. Have a nice, dry day. Watch out for your cornholes tonight.

  23. Lulz. The guy that ran a sub 2 hour marathon is not as good an athlete as NBA players. The guy that bikes 6-7 hours a day for almost a month in the TDF, Giro, or Vuelta is not as good an athlete as an NFL QB or TE. Honest question. Do you think Jesse Owens was a high-level athlete? Michael Phelps? Roger Bannister? Just being able to catch a ball or make a shot does not elevate one's athleticism that much.

  25. Not to call bullshit on your family in particular but in general that generation voted for Ronald Reagan and helped support the 'evil government' mantra and 'evil media' which have manifested in Trump and McConnell, Cruz, Paul, Nixon, Stone, Fox News, OAN, Rush, Rove, Cheney, etc. This corruption has been in the making for a long time. Now they just don't hide it anymore because their supports are the elite who stand to gain the most, their supporters are the stupid ones that have willingly bought into a cult of personality. Lastly, Trump and any republican even getting elected demonstrates colossal failure of our education system.

  26. So I went back to the spot where I lost the Kingsnake the other day. Figured there would be a good chance because of all the rain. I am glad I went. I found my first ringneck. These are rare in Harris county. I also found the speckled king. He is at the very beginning of shedding so his eyes were cloudy. I saw the racer from the other day and a ribbon. So 4 species within 25 yards of each other.

  30. I couldn't find a dedicated thread to BBQ pits / smokers. Seems like there was one a few years back about a BBQ trailer build. May have been on the old site. I did a search, but didn't find anything. If I'm missing the more appropriate thread, fire away with the neg rep. Anyhow, I've embarked on a project. I had my masons build this. Yesterday, I set the vertical pipes for the counterweight pulley system. I'm starting on the bulk of the steel install in a few weeks. Getting the doors laser cut next week. Totally winging it so far. Couldn't find anything close to drawings or plans online, but it's basically a single fire box + main cooking chamber (both on counter-weighted pulleys), and vertical chamber. I'll post more pics as it comes together. Fire away with comments or criticism.
