I lost my dad at 16. We were close, and it was very, very hard. But losing my brother to an unexpected illness when he was 34 -- he was 16 months older than me, someone I shared a room with most of my childhood, and who I talked to every day -- was far worse. I still cannot think about it without crying and it has been 11 years. My heart hurts for the Ehlingers.60 points

There then gone. Hard to get your head around the death of the young. I recall watching the programs marking the 50 year anniversary of different events in WWII. Those 70 and 80 year old men crying their guts out in the cemetary at Normandy was so moving. At 70 you get the full picture of what a young man misses when he dies young. The Ehlingers have two such suddenly concluded timelines. They'll be haunted over the years as they mark what was missed. Some Thanksgiving in the 2040s will go quiet for a moment. Maybe there will be a chair simply left empty. It will become a reminder. Tears will flow or be fought back. It's not terribly rare, but, in every case, it must feel so intensely personal. And there is so little a stranger like me can do. I hope all goes as well as it can for the survivors. There's no getting around the fact that this is just bad. Keep moving, my friends.50 points

Fuck you, Cancer. Just got word my stepfather has been given the "there is nothing else we can do" for brain and lung cancer. Home hospice it is. My grandmother had a masectomy two weeks ago... her 2nd time with breast cancer... (My mom is a fucking champ handling all of this.) My neighbor died of pancreatic cancer last week. I was looking forward to 2021 being less traumatic... lost one of groomsmen to Covid in Feb, now I feel surrounded by cancer. Fuck it.36 points

This is so heartbreaking. I lost my sister when I was in 4th grade and she was a freshman in high school. Definitely hits close to home. This photo of the Ehlinger Family brings back sweet memories with my kiddos. Makes me cherish every day I have with them that much more. I pray for peace and healing for their family.29 points

This is something, that while horribly tragic, should make each and every one of us ponder our own life and families. So many of us by Gods grace have been spared this kind of pain. I'll freely admit if something like this happened to me, I couldn't take it. My family better watch out when I get home tomorrow, the hugs and kisses are going to be off the wall, and yes, tears of gratitude will be pouring. I know I've taken my loved ones for granted, and that stops now. Damn, I'm crying like a little bitch.28 points

Kids are morons with undeveloped frontal lobes. You've given them 15 other vaccines, but let's ask their feelings on this one. Be the parent and help us end this goddamn thing forever.27 points

I lost my brother to cancer when he was 13. I can tell you that not a week goes by where I don't think back in time of him or about what could have been. Reflection always helps to realign my empathy for the young folks, however entitled and pissant some may seem, they all breathe air that is precious to us all. Robbery of a full life sucks. My thoughts and prayers for you Sam. This hits close to home.19 points

Came here to Surly to express my deepest condolences to the Ehlingers, Longhorn Nation, and all who love Jake. We love our players, even if we don't know them personally, and this is just so sad. May Jake rest in peace, and rise in glory.17 points

@dcar00 That's because "everyone" doesn't know what they're talking about. Look, the AA thing about being powerless over alcohol (insert whatever other mind altering substance you want) is real. 100%. There are people who do not choose the drink, it chooses them. That said, there is a rock solid way past it and where choice comes in is when the mf'er CHOOSES not to take that path. A path, by the way, that requires serious accountability, honesty, and most of all, removes your victim card. It took a lot of pain for your's truly to take that path and I thank god everyday for the people who loved me enough to turn their backs on me until I did. They loved me enough to not rob me of the experience of getting to the point where the physical & psychic pain was so accute that I was ready to be dipped, dunked, spayed or neutered to find a way out. The ones who kept rescue rangering me kept me rolling around in my dirty diaper for a long time. Nice, warm, and squishy in there and I've got them coming to pat me on my head and tell me it's "ok", why leave that gig? The enablers are killers. They don't even know it, but they are. I know legions of people, many who were homeless for long periods of time who are now kicking ass and taking names in life. And they sure as shit aren't there b/c of the bleeding hearts.13 points

Lou Reed summed it up on his album 'Magic and Loss' which is a meditation on death. "Life's good, but it's not fair at all." Enjoy the great unknown, Jake. I never knew you personally, but I imagine that you touched the hearts of many people during your far too short journey in this realm.10 points

Dropped my hs freshman daughter off at school just now (something I’m painfully aware that I won’t get to do for much longer) and came home this spoiled rotten mutt: That whole no-dogs-on-the-furniture thing is pretty much completely out the window. He loves a blanket.10 points

Yeah, please, don't move it, but you guys should recognize it for what it is: a focal point for the dissemination of misinformation and denialism, and in my opinion the most decisive catalyst for turning the "news" forum into a its-not-political-if-I-get-pos-rep-from-other-CR-outcasts. Just name a thread and look at them individually with a critical eye. Almost every controversial one devolves into a debate where everyone is pretending not to be "political" while also injecting cable news talking points. Consider how the DT thread has unfolded: CR refugees: Hey! There's this crazy virus killing people in China. Haha! Stupid Commies! Everyone else: Yeah, it looks like it's spreading...maybe we ought to do something about it and start taking precautions. CR refugees: Why? It's no big deal (inside voice: because Trump says so). Everyone else: Holy fuck... It's coming and we're not doing shit to stop it. CR refugees: Lockdowns are for Commies. Everyone else: Look, man, until we figure this shit out, it's better to be safe than sorry. CR refugees: Fuck China! They eat bats! This escaped from a lab! Everyone else: I dunno, man. We can pin blame later after investigating. Let's just take care of the now. CR refugees: Masks don't do shit! Open everything up! The hospitals are getting paid to count deaths as Covid. Everyone else: Masks help. Let's be cautious in how we open things up. What the fuck are you talking about? CR refugees: Help! Help! I'm being repressed! Everyone else: Just act like a responsible fucking adult. The vaccine is coming. CR refugees: The schools aren't open and kids are killing themselves! Everyone else: There are risk factors for kids returning to school, but most have opened. Please, just be cautious. CR refugees: The vaccine is here! All praise Trump's Operation Warp Speed. Everyone else: Yay! Let's go get vaxxed!!! (Biden takes office) CR refugees: I got mine! Fuck all y'all for forcing everybody to get vaxxed. Everyone else: I got mine too! We're in the endgame. ERR'BODY GET VAXXED!!! (no one is forcing you to get vaxxed, dumbass). CR refugees: Fauci can't tell us exactly what precise percentage of the population is required to reach herd immunity! Vaccine passports are SOCIALISM!!! Do they even work?!? Everyone else: ...9 points

He didn't get voted out in 2018 because most Texans are idiots. It's that simple. More Texans will vote for the letter R over the letter D regardless of how shitty the R is every time. That's not to say Democrats shouldn't do a much better job in the state of Texas of nominating better candidates most of the time, but Beto was a good candidate and absolutely should have beaten Cruz. Ted Cruz doesn't care about what his job is in the Senate. He doesn't do anything in the Senate except obstruction and theater that he hopes will get on conservative news media because he's perpetually campaigning for his next gig. He's a narcissist, like Trump, without the bravado and charisma, which is why he's completely changed his look and the way he talks in the last few years to appeal to Trump's base. He views his job in the Senate as nothing more than a stepping stone to the presidency that he felt he deserved, for some reason, after only serving in government for a few years. It's why he won't even take messages from his constituents and openly admits to being corrupt. Because he doesn't care. But to your original point, no, his Twitter game isn't strong. He gets clowned on by countless people every time he posts anything.8 points

Bet she talks the way she writes. Gary we need to talk about the attic. There is an animal outside in the bushes. Today I went to the grocery store and I saw Sue. Sue says hi. Sue was buying broccoli. I didn't buy broccoli because that one time I did it was bad. Is that the game, oh OK. I don't want to interrupt the game. The garbage is almost full under the sink. Oh no, enjoy the game. I guess I will do something like cook some ravioli. I got ravioli when I went to the grocery store. I saw Sue at the grocery store. Sue wasn't getting ravioli she was getting broccoli. Sue says hi. Gary, we need to talk about the attic.8 points
