  1. Okay, I got to help make a video with 3 NFL players yesterday at Westlake and hang w Casey Thompson! Jordan Love - Utah State/Green Bay #1 draft pick QB - really nice. For the video, we threw water balloons at him which he had to dodge while he hit targets. I can't speak about how elusive he is on the field, but I can assure you that he is very hard to hit with water balloons. Micah Parsons - Penn State/Dallas #1 pick LB. We have a friend visiting whose sister went to Iowa, so Micah talked some good trash. Kyle Pitts - Florida/Atlanta #1 pick TE. He's tall and more thin than a big blocking TE, so he seemed liked a TE/WR hybrid. He won the John Mackey award for the most outstanding TE so I guess he's pretty good. The highlight was getting to spend some great time with Casey Thompson!! What an amazing young man he is! Super cool guy, smart and really nice. I made him throw a pass to me, lol. I can't wait to see what he can do for us on the field and I'm officially a super big fan. Jordan tossing a pass. Super soakers and water balloons in those tubs. Fun times.

  2. CSB - One time around 99-00' I was in the middle seat between a woman at the window and dude on the aisle. This was pre-ipod/iphone so I had all of my music loaded on my work laptop. After takeoff I pulled my laptop out and cranked it on the tray table, then was fishing around in my laptop bag for my earbuds not paying attention to the screen. What I didn't realize was that unbeknownst to me, my work buddies had hijacked my laptop and changed my bios so that upon boot up, my wallpaper was changed to a jpeg called "The Beard": a rather heinous snapshot of a woman spread eagle with a vast, Amazonian bush stretching from mid-thigh to navel. That image sat on my screen in full view of my row mates for a full 20-30 seconds until I finally found my earbuds in the bag that was down between my feet and I looked up to realize what was going on. The lady next to me was looking out the window so I'm not sure she saw it but I know the dude on the aisle did. He didn't say shit and I flew the whole way from LAX to AUS with a closed laptop wondering if airport security was going to meet me at the gate.

  3. A couple years ago, @Brisketexan and I were flying Southwest to a haring or something. We're flying for work, so we've got Business Select and we choose the window and aisle in the exit row. So we sit there chatting and this Karen decides that she's going to take the middle. No problem. Whatever. But we're not going to interrupt our conversation just because Karen sits down. So we keep chatting. She pulls out a magazine, and every 20 seconds or so gives out an exaggerated sigh. Brisket and I think this is mildly funny. Just as the doors close, she looks at Brisket and then at me and says "do one of y'all want to switch so that you can sit together?". Brisket just says, "no--we're good." I think I chimed in with "but thank you for offering." We just continue on with our conversation. At some point about 20 minutes into the flight, I turned the conversation to the topic of air crash disasters in history. Man--EgyptAir 990 was some shit. Because I'm fun like that.

  4. I disagree, I think society at large made tremendous sacrifices to prevent the spread of the illness-- for a couple of months. But that's simply not sustainable long-term. It never was. It never could have been. This virus isn't ever going away. We can't eradicate it. We can't "beat" it. All we can do is manage it. And if we can't create boosters to combat the next variant, and the ones after that, then it's going to spread until herd immunity is reached through infection rather than vaccination. That's not a rosy picture but it's reality. It's all that can happen. It's all that ever could have happened, really.

  8. This thread needs more photos from the folks who have had the opportunity to travel throughout Latin America. I have been going back and re-editing some of my older photos of Brazil and thought I would share some that less typical (not Rio tourist locations, although I have those too). I still have a bunch I need to work through, but here are a few. Many of these will be from 2006/7 when I lived there and shot with a point and shoot. I left my film camera in Texas as it would be a lot cheaper and faster to shoot digital. I wish I had one, had a better camera then, and two, taken my time to frame shots rather than a lot of snapshots. Oh well... Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. I believe this is the closest point in the Americas to Africa, therefore was the location of US base in WWII. Thunderstorm as seen from my house in Campinas, São Paulo. Cathedral in my wife's hometown of Cosmópolis, São Paulo. This town was settled mostly by Italian and German immigrants. São Paulo vs Palmeiras at Morumbi. Palmeiras was originally a team for Italian immigrants. São Paulo won 3-1. Bairro Liberdade is a Japanese neighborhood in São Paulo. Brazil is the home of the most Japanese outside of Japan. Catedral da Sé can be seen in the background. Curitiba, Paraná skyline seen from the botanical gardens. Holambra, São Paulo. Holambra is a Dutch town in São Paulo famous for horticulture, especially flowers. Dutch is still taught in school there. I took this during a festival there. São Paulo, Saõ Paulo, partial skyline as seen from the top of Edifício Itália. I say partial because from this building, Sampa stretches out to the horizon in every direction. Massive city. Church in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina. Door in the historic part of Paraty, Rio de Janeiro. I'll post more if folks are interested. Also, next time I visit, I will take a lot of food photos since people like seeing those.

Now its fuck the mlb, fuck other fanbases, fuck the media etc. We all know the only thing that will happen is a "Fuck Altuve" chant, or massive booing when Tuve and CC come up to bat so taking that from the dumbass fans and media is worth not participating. 12. 1234. He was given a national crisis that he could have milked for a second term. He could have milked the shit out of it. It was the kind of crisis that required very little effort on his part. But he threw a fucking temper tantrum all the time, and whined and whined as people were losing their jobs, losing their lives, etc. He tried to make it all about himself, tried to make it out to be a conspiracy to hurt him.

  13. Last update. It has been a crazy year of updating this info but I do believe it is time to retire. Only 22 cases today overall and the demographic data is borked as Travis County is having some issues, so with that I bid this thread adieu. 56 people hospitalized. This thread definitely served a good purpose and I appreciate all of the positive feedback y'all passed my way over the past 12 months. Here's hoping that more and more folks get vaccinated and that the Delta variant has no impact on Texas. Hook 'em Horns!

  21. Regarding the discussion on pediatric vaccination, the context of the original question was related to a 12 year old boy that had already received the first dose, and a parent concerned about the risk/benefit of the second dose. The points about transmission vectors, COVID-related CV events, risk/benefit etc. seem to be coming from a perspective of no vaccination vs. vaccination, but that really isn't the increment relevant to the particular question. We know that the cardiac ADEs are strongly related to second dose admin in kids, young males specifically. We also know that the immune response to the vax is stronger in children than <16 compared to individuals 16-25, and we know that there is a strong first dose effect in adults. Unfortunately the trial used to secure the pediatric EUA did not report immune response after first dose or include a single dose only arm. That is unfortunate, but we know 1m after 2nd dose the immune response is ~75% stronger among kids age 12-15. The incremental risk/benefit for second dose has to take all of these factors into consideration imo, and those factors will increase the 2nd dose incremental risk side of the equation while reducing the incremental benefit side, relative to an assessment of first dose or two dose regimen as a whole. It's not as simple and clear cut as some of the responses make it out to be. From population health perspective there is no doubt that vaccination is clearly favored across all ages and sexes. The delta variant tilts the scales even more heavily. The CV events are exceedingly rare, and this sort of thing is to be expected when you roll out hundreds of millions of doses of anything. But there also has to be some room for individualized weighing of risk/benefits as well. Like I mentioned up thread my, 12yo daughter has been fully vaccinated, but the calculus might be different for my 10yo son with some CV issues. I would be an easier call if there were not pre-existing CV factors in play. We'll have to discuss the issue with his cardiologist when the time comes.

You have no idea what mental toughness is until you live a day as a queer person with dumbfucks like you all around trying to stop progress just so you can marry the person you love and have access to basic modern necessities like insurance, housing, mortgage loans and jobs.

  25. (If this doesn't meet the intent of this thread, let me know and I'll delete it. I will probably never be mistaken for Latino/Hispanic.) Really enjoying this thread, always been a fan of whatever food and culture I got to experience from any region south of the US. Tried to make corn tortillas a few weeks back and failed miserably, a topic for its own thread. It's very cool seeing how similar cuisines are between different areas of the world. There are a lot of very similar foods between Mexico and south Asia: Jamaica/Roselle as well as cane sugar drinks, ceviche/yum 'raw' acid salads, grilling anything on a skewer, chili powder on fruit, the aforementioned chicken hearts, etc. My favorite churrasco in the US is actually a little hole in the wall in Hartford, CT - Brazil Grill and Pizza. Grab your sides off the buffet line, then go to the grill and have them cut the meats you want, weigh your plate to pay. As it's by weight, the black beans are a much worse deal than the meats. If you are unlucky, the guy ahead of you will have just bought all the chicken hearts (asshole!) Ate there at least weekly for a year. I actually took takeout rice and chicken hearts and mixed them into a ziploc bag to take on a plane a few times. Reviews say prices have gone up, but at the time the most expensive plate I could put together was not over $15. Hartford was a shithole, yet this place makes me want to go back and visit, enough so that I've flown to NYC and rented a car and driven to Hartford twice after leaving, just to eat there again: https://goo.gl/maps/tx8Fdk1ZX82pLYESA Some of my takeout trays. I took a photo of every single one. Most of them feature chicken hearts, some of them are just chicken hearts and rice: Mortar/Pestle (molcajete?) garlic, coarse salt (doubles as a friction grit to help with grinding), white peppercorns. Pound them into a paste. Then add olive oil and wine vinegar. Marinate hearts, I went overnight. Skewer and grill. Genuine laugh at this one, there's a little hole in the wall grilled chicken shack near my work that has a clock hung on the wall in box just like that (not with tape). This place has the best grilled chicken in the world, period. I've taken a lot of foreign visitors and have yet to have anyone disagree. Restaurant: https://goo.gl/maps/GJffzHNPtzRoVmDA8 I can't find my clock photo, but here's a photo stolen from Google Maps. The chicken: This is genius and may be universal. For most ethnic foods in countries with health scores, I will always pick the place with the lower health score - frankly I want the priority to be the food, not the cleanliness and health score. Here in Asia, I pick the dirtiest, shittiest looking place, because if they're open and busy, you know people sure as hell aren't coming for the clean premises. I spent many a teenage summer in China, the money in sock or under foot in shoe was a lesson I very quickly learned. At the very least keep enough taxi/motorbike fare to get home in a separate place under your sock. To this day I keep a separate stash of cash, enough for one-way fare home, every time I travel anywhere. It wasn't robbery/mugging there, it was pickpockets. I'm still in awe of the pickpockets, even knowing it was happening I could not tell how or when it happened.

  26. A few weekends ago we land in a costal Balkan city. SO calls an uber. I can't hear the conversation but infer the following... Uber: Where are you located? Her: We walked out of the airport just now Uber: Like where? Her: I can see the ocean (the airport is literally next to the ocean so from everywhere you can see the Ocean) Me: Pointing to the taxi stand Uber: loooooong silence Her: I can see the ocean. Come pick us up from here Me: Give me the phone!

  27. At this stage, I’d like to have the groups parsed into vaxed/not vaxed so we can see the difference and properly evaluate our individual risk, but good luck finding that data. of half the new cases are of vaxed people but only 5% of hospitalized are, that’s important data.

I’m at the point right now where the thought doesn’t cross my mind to see what day it is and correlate that with what stores might be getting a “drop”. 29. back in the old days, i feel like we were lucky to have an all-star or two, and they would get in near the end of the game, and i was happy if they just put a good at bat together. same with the postseason. any extra base hit was a big deal for bags or biggio. but ever since bregman and springer went back-to-back in an all-star game (not to mention our ridiculous offensive postseason stats across the board), i'm kinda over it.
