  1. So some positive news, relatively. Had both an endoscopic ultrasound and PET CT this past week. Ultrasound showed a sizable tumor. But PET CT showed very little spread. And that’s the key. Now there is a plan. 6 weeks of radiation 5 days/week and chemo 1x/week for the same period. Then wait 8 weeks or so and if it worked to shrink it down, then open me up, cut out a section of my esophagus, and then hope that’s that. So at least there’s a path to the other side.

  2. First off, that's a lie. Second, what makes you think the subset of protesters in response to the George Floyd murder who engaged in property damage identify or align with the Democratic Party or the left? Have they run for office and been overwhelmingly supported by Democratic voters? Have they been given spots on prime time left-leaning media programs and had their actions be supported by the hosts of the show? Are they being paid to go to left wing political conferences? Has the Democratic party whole heartedly rejected any notion of accountability for their actions?

  4. Texas is the only state that came into the Union by treaty. It retains the right to secede at will. We have heard them threaten to secede so often that I formed an enthusiastic organization—The American Friends for Texas Secession. This stops the subject cold. They want to be able to secede but they don't want anyone to want them to. ― John Steinbeck, Travels with Charley

  5. This is some serious nonsense. It’s the computers’ fault? Come on. Managers and owners need to ask— what of the following can they say has honestly gotten better for employees over say, 30 years. In general and at their own company: 1. Profit sharing. 2. Stock options. 3. Pension plan 4. Retirement plan contribution 5. Salaries rise with at least inflation 6. Health insurance employer contribution at least abreast of premiums 7. Dental/vision. 8. PTO 9. Maternity/family leave For almost everyone that shit is on an accelerating downhill run. Yes, employees give less of a shit about you. What part of the message “you don’t give a shit about them” was miscommunication from you? The glee with which people are waiting for a recession so you can REALLY screw all these entitled youngsters speaks loud enough. Yes, they all know….that’s the goal.

  7. It’s not hard, especially when one views June 2020 in the proper context: https://www.radcliffe.harvard.edu/news-and-ideas/black-lives-matter-protesters-were-overwhelmingly-peaceful-our-research-finds Here is what we have found based on the 7,305 events we’ve collected. The overall levels of violence and property destruction were low, and most of the violence that did take place was, in fact, directed against the BLM protesters. First, police made arrests in 5% of the protest events, with over 8,500 reported arrests (or possibly more). Police used tear gas or related chemical substances in 2.5% of these events. Protesters or bystanders were reported injured in 1.6 percent of the protests. In total, at least three Black Lives Matter protesters and one other person were killed while protesting in Omaha, Austin and Kenosha, Wis. One anti-fascist protester killed a far-right group member during a confrontation in Portland, Ore.; law enforcement killed the alleged assailant several days later. Police were reported injured in 1% of the protests. A law enforcement officer killed in California was allegedly shot by supporters of the far-right “boogaloo” movement, not anti-racism protesters. The killings in the line of duty of other law enforcement officers during this period were not related to the protests. Only 3.7% of the protests involved property damage or vandalism. Some portion of these involved neither police nor protesters, but people engaging in vandalism or looting alongside the protests. In short, our data suggest that 96.3% of events involved no property damage or police injuries, and in 97.7% of events, no injuries were reported among participants, bystanders or police.

  8. Met my folks and brother and sister-in-law at Lost Pines this past weekend. Seeing that Snow's was just under an hour from Lost Pines, I put together an excursion to go Saturday morning. (I also had some items from our charity BBQ event that she served as a celeb judge that I needed to give her.) My 14-year-old son, my parents and I rolled out of Lost Pines around 7:15 Saturday morning. We got to Snow's by 8:15 and the line was as long as I've ever seen it. Two years ago, we'd gotten there around 8:15 upon Tootsie's recommendation and had food in hand by 10:15/10:30. This was a much longer line than I remembered and my parents are in their mid-70's. My dad is in good shape but my mother is not, at least not like he is. Oh well, I put on a brave face and we waited -- and waited, and waited. (Tootsie and Kerry later said they were surprised by the size of the line this week.) After about 90 mins in line, I went to find Tootsie to let her know I was there with what I needed to give her and also ask if we were OK on getting food where we were. I said I couldn't wait to get dive into the delicious pork steak we were going to get. She said we were fine on food but would probably be out of chicken (as usual). Meh. About an hour later, she comes to find us in line and said they were getting low on on pork but she'd pulled one aside for us. Thank goodness she did because we we got in to order they had brisket, sausage and turkey (and white bread) left over. No sides. No banana pudding. Just meat. Not a problem. We loaded up with two pounds of brisket, a pound of turkey and a link of both kinds of sausage and went to sit down. Tootsie pulled the pork steak she'd set aside out of the smoker and brought it over. Hot damn was that amazing of her to do that -- and it was the star of the table (that and the brisket, of course). My parents and son absolutely loved it -- despite the three-hour wait in line. Tootsie came and sat down at the table with us for about 30 mins and ate her "lunch" with us. Her lunch was a fat sausage link wrapped up in a slice of white bread. In summation, my third trip to Snow's was an absolute delight. Tootsie is an unbelievable person and a true Texas treasure. She has really taken to our cause and even toured the school when she was up last month. Snow's is my absolute favorite BBQ place on Planet Earth. There are other places smoking meat that is this good and many places have better sides. But Snow's is doing it the old school way, the way that put Lockhart and Taylor and Luling on the BBQ map and kind of kicked off this Aaron Franklin-inspired BBQ renaissance in Texas. And ain't nobody else got Tootsie. Snow's food is amazing and the atmosphere (and the staff) is even better. If you haven't been, you need to go. Tootsie will not be with us forever and that thought makes me momentarily sad.

  9. No one says that they weren't. But it has been conflated to be the purpose of BLM (which is only to ask for a change to how police and other government systems handle race relations) rather than a subset of bad actors with their own agenda to destroy things. Additionally, a decent percentage of those rightfully prosecuted were those who were not part of the protests and there to make the movement look bad. In contrast, the Jan. 6 insurrection was designed and implemented to stop a transition of power, against the will of the people (you know, our votes) thus stopping our democracy from existing after a couple hundred years. Like comparing apples and hippopotamus.

  12. Some of the bordering nations (Baltics, Poland) are dumping massive amounts in to try and win the fight in Ukraine now, so that it doesn't spread to their nations. They see a kindred spirit in the Ukrainians, and believe they can win (and believe they have to win) in Ukraine. If things go south with Ukraine and Russia continues into the Baltics/Poland, they didn't have the manpower to fight Russia to a standstill anyways prior to February, and they know that the rest of NATO will deploy into their nations to fight Russia, but they still want to prevent that by backing Ukraine to the hilt. You also have NATO nations that are farther back, who maybe believe that things will still go south in Ukraine, and that all of the sudden they are fighting Russia in Poland and the Baltics, and so they are keeping their hardware ready. Some of them do not produce their own military hardware as well, or are limited in what they produce, and so they rely heavily on the US/UK/France/Sweden/etc. and if things go south, they won't have time to wait for new hardware if they've donated a lot already to Ukraine. And a few are perhaps being cagey with the donations because they may have let training and maintenance, etc., lapse, or had a lot in storage, that wasn't maintained. They were coasting for years because they had a helluva buffer with Ukraine/Belarus/Finland/etc., and all of the sudden, people are yelling for them to donate stuff, and they are perhaps trying not to reveal any weaknesses out of embarrassment or whatever. I think this could be true especially in regards to Soviet-era hardware being stored away. I don't think it's a coincidence that the Baltics and Poland have donated so much, and I don't think it's a coincidence that the US/Canada/UK/Australia are all donating a lot - in that last group, three of us have oceans between us and Russia, and the UK has solid seapower. Short of nukes, no battles will be fought on our lands, so we have the luxury or pumping a lot of hardware into Ukraine. Plus, some of us, especially the US, are transitioning between weapons systems (IFVs, etc.), so it's easy for us to dump older, but still solid hardware into the fight. And it's not a coincidence that so many countries have donated small arms/ATGMs/etc., not just because they are easy to donate and relatively easy to replace, but also in the case of things like ant-tank missiles, if they are used in Ukraine, they will in theory be destroying tanks/IFVs/etc. that the Russians will then not be able to use if they move past Ukraine. I could be wrong, but I know the Baltics/Poland are heavily invested in Russia failing, and it's not just emotionally, and I also get a sense that some NATO nations are nervous about having to fight Russia beyond Ukraine and so maybe want to keep artillery/etc. in their own country in case of that. Putin and Co. have been sending clear signals that they won't stop with Ukraine, and the justifications they have used for Ukraine could be used for opening a land corridor to Kalingrad, and could be used to try and bring the Baltic states back into the fold. Now I think the chances of them moving beyond Ukraine are extremely low at this point (Georgia would probably be the max) - Russia can't even get to the Dniper, they won't be able to take Odessa, etc., but Putin and Co. are still running their mouths way too much to and it makes a lot of Europeans nervous that he wants to return to some kind of USSR/Russian Empire.

  13. I mean, for decades the biggest heroes of corporate America have been pushing the ideology that employees are purely a necessary labor mechanism for their profits. WTF did people expect? Also time for “millenial” to stop being a synonym for “young/entry level.” By some measurements the oldest millennials are 40 and by any measure they are well into their 30s. Older millennials and younger Gen-X were asswhipped by the worst of American economic life and policy since the Depression and told it was our fault because of avocado toast so yeah— they (we) are definitely not “live to work.”

  14. Wow, was I wrong. You aren't a Putin apologist, you are a full fledged acolyte. First, not everyone in Donetsk and Luhansk wanted to separate. The Russians moved in to reinforce the minority who wanted to separate from Ukraine. Second, he has taken a large portion of the Donbas region, but has yet to prove that he can hold it. The Ukrainians have shown that holding it will be difficult, at least. Third, the war is far from over. It isn't over until Ukraine submits. They have shown no inclination to do so, so you need to recalibrate your evaluation. Fourth, ignoring Russian aggression will have tremendous consequences, intended and otherwise. Every action has unintended consequences; that is no excuse to remain inactive in the face of the same type and stated scope of aggression the world last saw from Hitler, Mussolini, and Tojo. Finally, spending money we don't have is the American pastime. You just don't like that it isn't being spent the way you want it spent. I would rather oppose Putin's authoritarianism and aggression now by helping Ukraine than later by fighting Russians with American fighting men after he has had time to rearm after you and your ilk remove sanctions.

  18. Generally, employers have earned the contempt of workers by treating their employees as replaceable for decades. It’s very telling how many people in management/ownership roles appear to be longing for a deep recession and high unemployment so that they can turn the table back around and start treating people poorly again. Employees expecting flexible schedules, competitive pay, full bennies, and manageable workloads isn’t unreasonable. It’s been a long time coming.

  19. That’s because being gay has zero to do with pedophilia despite morons who think so. Even comparing the two is pretty fucked up. Meaning why wouldn’t your kid be safe at a gay bar? Do you think adult gay men want to fuck little boys? Do you think all adult straight men want to fuck little 7 year old girls?

  23. Major problem with analytics is employers cutting headcount to the bone and constantly pushing to do more with less. It creates this vicious cycle where a long tenured/valuable employee leaves for more money or less stress and it throws an entire team/department into chaos. Leadership starts hearing the complaints 6 months after the fact and throws money at the problem but recruiting/hiring/onboarding takes nearly another year for the team to recover and then as soon as they do someone else leaves and starts the cycle all over again. This leads to stress and job dissatisfaction which does not inspire loyalty or raise morale. This is the type of shit that the pre 2000s working world didn’t have to deal with and it makes your 8 hours a day miserable.

It seems to grow like a putrid mushroom from our violent culture and love of soldier cosplay. Yes. You're a SEAL. You can kick my ass without getting winded. So fucking what? How does the Navy feel about this fucking lunatic advertising his military record in an ad showing a military attack on a civilian residence? Save our country? 31. I'm sorry, that wasn't a full answer to your question earlier. Actually, I'm very pleased at our response (and that of NATO's and the EU's). No Americans are dying, and this should stop Putin's future endeavors in trying to take over more countries. I think it's about as good as we can do, given how fast this spun up, and Putin has ironically justified NATO's existence. Back in February, most of us believed that Russia would be west of the Dniper in March and that we'd be supplying an insurgency. Instead, Ukraine is fighting Russia head-on, and Ukraine has punched well above their weight class. It's helped that the Russians are so incredibly incompetent and poorly-trained, but having conscripts for just a year does that. Like I said several times back in February/March, having been in the US Army back in the early 90s, I really had it in my head that the Soviets and then Russians would be tough to crack on the battlefield. Instead, they seem to be more interested in living and looting Ukraine than anything else. If I had a complaint, it's that we should be supplying Ukraine with more artillery (up to and including MLRS) and maybe putting PATRIOT systems into the hands of Ukrainians for use in Western Ukraine, and that we should be trying to help with training more of their typical rank-and-file soldiers in Poland or Romania. Language barriers could be overcome with translators, and we have really solid instructors in the US military that could help train up their infantry.

  32. How many different times has Uvalde PD changed their story? I've lost track. Originally they claimed the shooter was fired upon or "engaged" before entering the school. Then we found out that was a lie and that there was an officer present but he decided to just let the dude waltz into the school. Originally they claimed he was able to enter the school because an exterior door was propped open and therefore it was all a dead teacher's fault. Then we found out that was a complete lie and that the teacher slammed the door shut before the shooter entered the building. Originally they claimed -- well I don't remember exactly what they said at the press conference with Governor Wheels -- but they claimed the police were heroes and they stopped the gunman as fast as humanly possible and claimed to follow all established protocol. Lies, lies, damnable lies. Next it came out that they waited over an hour to confront the shooter. So they made up some lame story about an armored door that they were unable to enter because "keys." Now that's been shown to not only be unbelievable but a complete lie. And that not only were the doors to the classroom unlocked but they were incapable of locking from the inside. What a disgrace upon Uvalde PD, their ISD police and the cunty sheriffs departments. They're each packed with liars and cowards. It's a maddening, fucking disgrace they all haven't resigned out of shame let alone been fired and blacklisted. Each member of every one of those departments should have their weapons and ammo confiscated except for a pistol and a single bullet. And then told exactly where to place their loaded pistol on their own chin and which direction to aim. That's the only acceptable way for any of them to use a weapon in the future: a bullet to their own brains. The fact that the state DPS continues to back them and support them tells you everything you need to know about the state of the practice of law enforcement.
