E.J. Holland: Who's next in 2020? A look at five commit candidates

Texas made a splash this week as it landed a commitment from four-star offensive lineman Jake Majors. He became the third member of UT's 2020 class. So who's next? Here is a look at five candidates that could join the future.

RB/ATH Mookie Cooper, St. Louis Trinity Catholic (MO)

Texas signed his teammate and four-star wide receiver Marcus Washington. And it might not take long for Cooper to join him in Austin. After all, Cooper has already made multiple unofficial visits to Texas, and the Longhorns seem to have the early momentum in this recruitment. Texas is looking at Cooper as more of a slot receiver that could also see time in the backfield.

OL Jaylen Garth, Port Neches-Groves

Texas is in a great position with a handful of its key offensive line targets for next cycle and as mentioned, the Longhorns already reeled two in the trenches. Garth seems to be a slam-dunk land for Texas. After all, Tom Herman has a close bond with the coaching staff at Port Neches-Groves, and Garth is a teammate of 2019 UT quarterback commit Roschon Johnson, who he views as an older brother. UT will, however, have to fight off Alabama and Texas A&M.

OL Chad Lindberg, Clear Creek

Look, Lindberg doesn't want to make an early decision, but it's clear the Longhorns are making a huge impression on him and his family, especially after last weekend's visit. Lindberg has developed a strong relationship with the Texas coaching staff as well as the commits in the 2020 class. Stanford will host him for a visit next month and is the biggest threat. Schools like Clemson and LSU are also in play. Texas may try to push Lindberg to commit early as he has a chance to be the ringleader for this class.

DL Alfred Collins, Bastrop Cedar Creek

A three-star prospect, Collins has been to Texas on several occasions and is a legacy — his mother played basketball on the Forty Acres. Collins has stated that he might pull the trigger soon. Right now, the Longhorns have the inside track in this recruitment thanks to his ties to the program. Though, he is also strongly considering Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

ATH Kelvontay Dixon, Carthage

This recruitment seems like an easy one for Texas to win if it pushes hard. Dixon attended every Texas home game this past season and is the younger brother of freshman running back Keaontay Ingram. It would be very surprising if Dixon didn't join his brother in Austin. This one is looking like more of a when rather than an if. The three-star prospect has the potential to play wide receiver or defensive back at the next level.

I'm not sure if he'd be a top target if it wasn't for Evans

Yeah, his junior film isn’t out, but he seems to me like a guy who just uses his weight/size to lean on people, but doesn’t show the technique/footwork to excel at the next level. We’ll see once he has more film out there, but he’ll be one to watch as far as weigh in measurements at camps.

right now, if we could get Evans without him, I’d definitely prefer to pass on him and look for a late riser.

In sorry, you think a high number of those fucking weird ass dorks were popular enough in HS to actually enjoy it? Its a great joke, but lets be real: their best times in life were 18-22 when they were locked into a shitty town with other losers like them for 4 years.

A stone cold fact.

E.J. Holland: Texas recruiting tidbits from Orlando Pylon 7v7

— Elite 2020 Duncanville athlete Ja’Quinden Jackson remains high on Texas. Jackson loves the program and has developed a great relationship with the entire staff, including assistant Ra’Shaad Samples. Jackson told me that he is not going to be able to make it to Texas junior day next month, but he does hope to visit at some point this offseason. Along with Texas, Jackson is looking hard at Alabama, LSU and a few others.

— Five-star 2020 cornerback Dwight McGlothern still has Texas in the mix and is planning to make a visit in the near future. While schools like LSU and Texas A&M appear to be in a better position at this time, McGlothern likes what Texas has to offer and was impressed with the Longhorns’ win over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

— Top 2021 wide receiver Latrell Neville is also looking to visit Texas soon. UT head coach Tom Herman stopped by to check in on Neville this week, which made a big impression on him. Neville likes both Texas and Texas A&M early on and is also looking at a few out-of-state programs. Neville wants to take his time with the process.

— Four-star 2020 defensive back Bryson Washington made his way to Texas last weekend for its elite prospect day. Washington had a great time on campus and really enjoyed spending extended time with safeties coach Craig Naivar. Texas is in a great spot for Washington early on. He plans to make a commitment in July.

— Texas running backs coach Stan Drayton recently stopped by West Mesquite to see 2020 target Ty Jordan and has been keeping in contact with him. Jordan still has Texas around the top of his list, and he is excited about making a visit to Austin at some point this spring. While the focus has been on Zach Evans, Jordan would make a great compliment back.

— Texas recently put an offer on the table for three-star 2020 cornerback Jalen Kimber. UT cornerbacks coach Jason Washington recently stopped by to see him, and the two are building a strong relationship. With Kimber, it’s all about getting him on campus as he is still learning more about the program. Texas A&M appears to be in the lead early on.

— Four-star 2021 Florida linebacker Branden Jennings told me that he is excited about his new offer from Texas. Jennings added that UT is in his top group early on. While Texas has had success in the Sunshine State, landing Jennings is going to be tough. He has a brother at Miami, and the Hurricanes appear to be the consensus team to beat for him.

— Rising 2020 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) athlete Jovan Ferguson is releasing a top schools list in the near future and made it clear that the Longhorns would be on it. Texas has limited spots for next cycle, so it will be interesting to see if they push for Ferguson. If they do, they would be in a great spot. Ferguson has family in Houston and loves the program.

— Texas is still evaluating four-star Dallas Carter defensive lineman Branard Wright. UT defensive line coach Oscar Giles recently stopped by to see him, and Wright said he would like to make a visit. While Texas has yet to offer, Wright said it’s not too late and made it clear that he remains very interested in the Longhorns.

— Texas is also taking a closer look at rising 2020 cornerback Ryan Watts. In fact, Texas cornerbacks coach Jason Washington stopped by to see him this week. Watts is one of the hottest prospects on the trail and has notched several P5 offers over the last month. His height and length make him extremely intriguing.

— The Longhorns are also monitoring fast-rising 2020 Arlington athlete Jahari Rogers. UT safeties coach Craig Naivar stopped by to see Rogers this week. Rogers made an unofficial visit to Texas this fall and is close to assistant Ra’Shaad Samples. Rogers plays quarterback for his high school team, but Texas likes him as a defensive back.

— Four-star 2020 Southlake Carroll cornerback RJ Mickens wore a Texas hat at today’s tournament. Mickens said he likes Texas and would really appreciate an offer from the Longhorns. But he also added that it’s getting ‘kind of late.’ Mickens holds offers from several major programs.

Was listening to Nahlin and Wells latest podcast on drive home from work.  Not a bad listen. One prospect they were talking up was Bryson Washington from Houston King.  Apparently Naivar went to see him last week after the Elite event.   Couple of interesting tidbits about him, he almost transfered to Mater Dei because his dad lives out there, so he’s getting a lot of attention from PAC 12 schools, and his current high school coach is Brock Fitzhenry’s dad.   I watched a total of one play from his hudl but is the one where he chases a guy down from about 60 yards away on the other side of the field
