Does pate mention the fact that if the contracts have stipulations related to performance that they are not NIL deals and aren’t allowed?

and as to the on3 update, only sydir moved up the list?  That seems to go against what other schools say about Texas commits.

Interesting to look at differences.

On3 is really high on Bowen and Calvin Simpson Hunt (name I havent heard much on)

Down on Hill, Owens, Jayvon, Thomas, Hale.

We offered when he started blowing up from under-the-radar early Tech commit, but he immediately fell in love with Ohio State when they offered and we never found a way into it.

Yea, the Johntay drop is really odd considering he balled out in camps and also won state 7 on 7 tourney over the summer. Some of the drops are honestly puzzling regardless of schools. Not sure who are the big risers that are dropping other guys, but glad to see they at least gave Sydir an appropriate bump.

Arch Manning keeps No. 1 ranking in 2023 as contenders close in

Cooper Petagna

Spoiler

Arch Manning keeps No. 1 ranking in 2023 as contenders close in

Cooper Petagna

When it comes to the race for No. 1 overall in the 2023 class, the distance between Arch Manning and the field is shrinking.

While Manning maintains the top spot in the updated Top247 rankings, there has been no shortage of dialogue — nationally and among the 247Sports rankings committee — as to who should be the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect.

For now, I believe keeping Manning in the driver's seat entering the fall is the right call. I also believe the notion that Manning is not one of the nation’s top quarterbacks is misinformed.

A three-year starter at Isidore Newman in New Orleans, Manning has posted a 25-6 record as a starter, completing more than 65 percent of his passing attempts entering his senior season. It’s also important to note that from an experience standpoint Manning owns the most passing attempts of any quarterback in the Top247. With almost 750 throws in three seasons at the controls of Newman’s offense, there’s no lack of context in evaluating Manning’s ability to play the quarterback position.

With most critics centering on the level of competition the nation’s No. 1 player faces at Louisiana’s 2A / Division III level, Manning’s opposition has not impacted our long-term projection of the New Orleans native.

After evaluating Manning in-person in May, I still favor Manning to the field as I believe he possesses the combination of the most potential and the highest floor of any signal caller in the class. He’s shown uncanny pocket awareness throughout his prep career and consistent ability to make plays on the move. Projecting Manning’s success three to four years ahead is why he maintains poll position this go-around.

The way it’s trending, the Texas commit will have to fend off a number of talented signal-callers. Manning's chief competition right now is Dante Moore.

An Oregon commit who moves up to No. 2 overall, Moore checks many of the desired boxes at the quarterback position. Moore is one of only three Top247 quarterbacks with more than 600 live throws entering the 2022 season. He’s the youngest quarterback in the Top247. With a 30-8 record as a starter at Martin Luther King High School in Detroit, Moore is one of the safest bets of any passer in the class as he possesses the ability and the experience to enter the starting quarterback conversation as soon as he steps foot on a college campus.

Between a proven large body of work and the physical makeup at the position to be considered the nation’s top quarterback, there’s no question Moore should be considered in the debate for the No. 1 prospect in the country.

With no shortage of differentiating opinions, Moore doesn’t lack support behind the scenes at 247Sports where some believe he has the most legitimate argument to be crowned the best prospect in America.

Every exposure we’ve experienced, Moore’s proved he’s a winner and most importantly he’s proven it time and time again on the gridiron. Coming off a state championship season at MLK last year, Moore was about as clean as they come on the stat sheet, posting an immaculate 40-to-3 TD-INT ratio and completing 72 percent of his passes on his way to a 13-1 season.

As the race for No. 1 tightens, Moore continues to prove himself as one of the surest bets in this year's class, checking every box and erasing any lingering doubts as he approaches his senior season. With one more go-around left at the high school ranks, there’s not much left to prove on the field, maybe other than making an undeniable case that he’s the clear-cut No. 1 player in the country.

DARK HORSE

Outside of Manning and Moore, the race for No. 1 becomes a little bit of a cloudier conversation. Although Nicholaus Iamaleava is arguably the most physically gifted quarterback in the class, with a sample size of only 13 starts under his belt, the California signal caller would need another electrifying year to have a legitimate case for the No. 1 player in the Top247. With Iamaleava oozing with potential and in need of live game experience, it would be smart not to discount him down the line as a “dark horse” contender to make things interesting come December. Iamaleava is committed to Tennessee.

THE WILDCARD

Recently crowned the MVP of the Elite Finals in Los Angeles, you’d be wise to keep an eye on newly-minted 247Sports five-star Jackson Arnold as a late-rising contender for the nation’s No. 1 overall spot. Although he ranks No. 15 in the most updated version of the Top247, it’s difficult to imagine there’s a prospect with more runway to gain ground than Arnold.

A standout from Denton (Texas) Guyer, Arnold completed more than 66 percent of his attempts last season while guiding Guyer to a 14-2 record and a Texas 6A Division II state championship appearance. Arnold was nothing short of exceptional in his first year as a full-time starter, posting a 34-to-5 TD-INT ratio while rushing for more 600 yards and 12 TDs.

After taking home some hardware from the most prestigious quarterback competition in the country, Arnold will look to capture a state title at Denton Guyer before he departs for the collegiate ranks. With no question as to the level of competition Arnold has faced in Texas and in Los Angeles, the Sooners commit could still have a couple of more moves left up the board as he aims to finish his high school career in style and establish himself as one of, if not the best, signal caller in the country.

DON’T DISCOUNT

Now to the “Don’t Discount” portion of our show. Here are the names of some guys who we’ll want to pay attention to down the stretch as the race for No. 1 continues to barrel toward the finish line.

Let’s start with Malachi Nelson. He’s long been regarded as the primary threat to unseat Manning from his No. 1 overall ranking, but has moved behind the Nos. 2 and No. 3 passers in Dante Moore and Nicholaus Iamaleava in the latest edition of the Top247 rankings.

Although Nelson finds himself within striking distance of the No. 1 overall spot, some up and down quarterback play throughout the offseason, including an appearance at the Overtime 7-on-7 event in Las Vegas, has found Nelson on the outside looking in of a No. 1 overall ranking. It’s important to note that Nelson had been dealing with a shoulder issue in Las Vegas and performed well a few weeks later in Los Angeles at the Elite 11 Finals.

With no shortage of talent at his disposal in Top247 receivers Makai Lemon and DeAndre Moore both returning for their senior season at Los Alamitos, don’t expect Nelson (a USC commit) to go away quietly.

Next up, Mr. Keon Keeley. A longtime personal favorite, what’s not to love about Keon Keeley? A smooth mover at 6-foot-6 and 245-pounds plus, the Notre Dame commit can beat you in a multitude of ways off the line of scrimmage. Whether that’s with an explosive first step, outstanding foot and body quickness, or with his length and flexibility, Keeley is a nightmare for opposing offensive linemen off the edge.

Although Keeley has continued to rise with each update to the Top247, a new question arises as he prepares for his senior season: Is a run at No. 1 possible over the next five months for Marcus Freeman’s crown jewel?

The short answer to that question is yes. That being said, Keeley certainly has his work cut out for him, but with his ability and value at a premium position it’s something not to rule out.

The last candidate that we’ll touch on for the race for No. 1 is no other than Top247 ATH Nyckoles Harbor. The owner of a well-documented and one-of-one track and field background, it would be foolish of us not to mention Harbor’s name in the conversation for the nation’s No. 1 spot. At 6-foot-5 and 225-pounds plus, Harbor is another player who benefits from not only his rare athletic upside, but he also plays one of the most valuable positions on the field. If Harbor can develop into three-quarters of his athletic potential at the collegiate level, there’s no doubt he could find himself in the mix to be one of the first players to hear his name called early in the NFL Draft a few years from now.

I see on the top 247 composite crystal balls for aggy for David Hicks, Anthony Hill, Dalton Brooks, Adam Hopkins (GA), TJ Shananan, and Johnny Bowens.

Their hit rate is gonna be far from 100% on those players and they still need a lot more players since they only have 5 commits.

Hale is odd

Cook is ranked 60 (ON3), 46 (257), 43 (ESPN), and 52 (Rivals).. So On3 is the lowest, but it is not crazy.

Hale is 133 (ON3), 66, 38, and 75..

Pettaway 136 (on3), 40, 33, 56

Braylon James 278 (On3), 96, 48, 205

That 73 is his on3 consensus ranking (their equivalent of the 247 composite) not his previous on3 ranking.

His previous on3 ranking was actually 138, they’ve always been lower on him than the other sites.

Inside Scoop: Realignment, news from the trenches, edge and corner recruiting

Eric Nahlin•10 minutes

(Photo by Pouya Dianat /Sports Illustrated via Getty Images)

The Inside Scoop has information on realignment that is beneficial to Texas leaving the Big 12, the latest on the development of the #BigHumans on both sides of the ball in the Longhorn football program, and a recruiting rundown on top targets, including a few who could decide on a school this week.

Realignment

USC and UCLA could be the domino that helps untether UT and OU from the Big 12. We‘ve heard OU does have the exit fee, but now we’re hearing the schools may get out without penalty due to the timing of contracts.

There is a very strong chance schools from the Pac 12 and Big 12 will merge. That doesn’t mean all schools will make the cut but that’s not really important for UT’s purposes. What is important is contract negotiations for the Pac are scheduled to start this year ahead of a 2024 expiration. Any merge with the Big 12 obviously could not include UT and OU as far as contracts go.

Stay tuned.

The Trenches

The current starting offensive line is Andrej Karic-Junior Angilau-Jake Majors-Hayden Conner-Christian Jones. When Majors is out, Angilau moves to center, Conner moves to left guard, and Devon Campbell goes to right guard.

If a fab five freshman line were to be rolled out early in the season, the most likely lineup as of now would be Kelvin Banks-Malik Agbo-Cole Hutson-Devon Campbell-Cam Williams.

Agbo has been coming on of late and is slightly ahead of Neto Umeozulu when it comes to processing info.

Per one source, the three most impressive freshmen right now are Banks, Campbell, and the early enrollee Hutson. A couple other sources have singled out Cam Williams for his ability to move well at his size.

Back when this class signed we heard it was expected two true freshman would eventually start this season. That’s still the case, however at the time the two were believed to be Banks and Campbell. More freshman are going to push for snaps than just those two.

In checking in with sources on the D-line, the two first names to pop up were Byron Murphy and Alfred Collins. Murphy showed up ahead of the curve but he’s already taken the next step. Last year he went from kid to college football player, displaying disruptive potential along the way. Now he has an even better understanding of his role and capabilities. Sources cite his strong hands and nonstop motor.

Sources are pointing towards this being Collins’ breakout season. We’ve known he’s an immense talent dating back to high school, and he made some freakish plays as a freshman. After being somewhat miscast in 2021 he had a quiet year. ”He’s just an obvious monster waiting to explode,” a source said. We’ve heard the same from a different non-UT source with unique insight.

That same non-UT source loves Jaray Bledsoe’s upside but doesn’t think he’ll contribute much as a freshman.

True freshman Kris Ross and Aaron Bryant were named as great program fits from a mentality and work ethic standpoint. We already know the same of Justice Finkley.

One Edge to watch? Barryn Sorrell. His attitude and work ethic remain impressive so his growth and development continues to trend in the right direction. Don’t be surprised if he’s playing meaningful snaps in the fourth quarter this fall.

Recruiting

Jalen Hale, WR, Longview (Texas) High: The Texas Longhorns continue to trend for the On3 Consensus four-star wide receiver. The chatter out of the UA Future 50 over the weekend was all Texas over Alabama. Hale said he knows where he is going already, but intends to make official visits to Alabama and Texas before announcing September 22. Two questions remain. 1) Will Nick Saban still bring him in if the belief is he’s headed to Texas? 2) Can Alabama sway Hale or his family if the visit happens? Texas is in a very good spot as of today.

Anthony Hill, LB, Denton (Texas) Ryan: The Longhorns continue to trend favorably for the On3 Consensus five-star linebacker ahead of a scheduled Texas A&M visit the last weekend of July. There has continued to be growing confidence in this recruitment since the start of July. And there was already confidence coming out of the June OV.

The recruitments of Friendswood (Texas) EDGE Braylan Shelby and Austin (Texas) Westlake EDGE Colton Vasek continue to be very hotly contested. Shelby is in the process of deciding between Texas and USC. Nothing has changed on IT’s thoughts on Shelby. He can envision himself at both schools. He has a genuine liking for both schools, staffs, and cities. His parents have always preferred closer to home. If it’s a tight decision that could tilt things in UT’s direction. Vasek is deciding between Texas and Oregon, with OU still pushing. The UT legacy may want to get a little further from home but UT still has a solid chance to win out. Both prospects are expected to make decisions in the coming days.

One announcement with a firm timeline is Malik Muahammad’s decision. Texas continues to be the team to beat for On3’s No. 30 player in the nation. Look for a Wednesday evening announcement.

If Texas does land Muhammad and then Jordan Matthews by mid-September, could that affect Javien Toviano’s thinking? That remains to be seen, though we know he’d certainly remain a top target for the Longhorns. That dynamic will probably become something that needs to be assessed as UT is the the favorite for both Muhammad and Matthews. Texas has made headway for Toviano and is in a good position, but it would be a stretch to say Texas has confidence. Proximity, academics, and the Arch effect do give UT a good chance to win out when the time comes.

Overall, On3’s update did fuck us over though. Derek Williams lost his 5th star in the composite and Cook just barely held on to his, he’s the lowest ranked 5-star there is now.

Not that anyone here didn’t already know, but BOMC is such laughable aggy confirmation bias, any evidence that refutes it just gets ignored.

Chad Simmons Intel:

5-star EDGE Damon Wilson

The buzz: Damon Wilson took an official visit to Alabama and an unofficial for multiple days to Georgia in June. The two SEC programs set the bar high. A return visit to each school for games is possible this fall and Wilson is planning to take official visits to Miami, Ohio State and Texas. Out of Wilson’s top five, four schools are out of state, and at this time, he is likely to choose one of those programs. Alabama and Georgia really impressed the five-star EDGE out of Venice (Fla.) last month. Wilson is keeping his options open, but both SEC schools have some buzz around them. This is expected to go until late in the fall, possibly to the Early Signing Period.

5-star defensive lineman David Hicks

The buzz: David Hicks is not saying too much about his recruitment right now, but numerous schools appear to be in the mix. Based on intel, Texas A&M may hold a slight edge with Oklahoma still right there with the Aggies. He has strong relationships with each staff. He was back in College Station for an unofficial visit in June and he is going back to Norman later this month. Hicks took official visits to Miami, Michigan State and Oregon in June, and all three schools impressed. There is some level of confidence in East Lansing due to his connection with Brandon Jordan. He worked with Hicks before taking a job in East Lansing. Texas is back in this race too. There is a solid chance he takes one of his last two official visits to Austin. This recruitment still has a long way to go. Hicks could even take his recruitment to February.

5-star safety Caleb Downs

The buzz: This one is coming down to three schools. Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State. Notre Dame received an official visit in June and the Irish are trying to hang around, but they look to be on the outside looking in for Caleb Downs. This one could still go a few different ways, but Alabama is a school I am hearing a lot about in the last few weeks. It doesn’t hurt that his close friend Justice Haynes committed to the Crimson Tide Sunday. Georgia and Ohio State are still very much in this too. Downs has mentioned the possibility of taking a visit to Texas or Texas A&M later this month, but that is unlikely. Whether that happens or not, this is expected to come down to the Crimson Tide, Bulldogs, and Buckeyes. All three schools are still in this race. A decision could come by the end of July.
