I drove out to San Angelo for the first shot this last weekend as well. Took maybe 10 minutes and was the Moderna vaccine. I felt like I had allergies or a really minor cold the next day. The wife really did not have a good time, but was pretty much back to normal 24ish hours later.

Welp, it finally happened. I snapped in public today. I went into work for a bit this morning because I’m trying to figure out the safest way to host physicians we are recruiting given our CV-19 sit

  • I don't really know what to say anymore tbh. What happened last night is hard to put into words for anyone who hasn't worked in a hospital healthcare setting. Just unreal. Everyone is getting fucked.

Made the five hour round trip to Stephenville to get round one of the Pfizer vaccine at CVS. It's been about 8 hours now and aside from some very minor soreness on my arm, so far, so good. They managed the line pretty well, so there wasn't a lot of interaction with the regular customers.

Got home and called my mom to let her know, and she told me the unfortunate news that two of her best friends died over the weekend after both ended up on vents. I'd stupidly allowed myself to get into the mindset that this was almost over -- especially now that my wife and I both got our first doses of the vaccine -- but fuck if that wasn't depressing and sobering to hear and it brought me back down to Earth real quick.

Last week, as covid vaccine appointment slots were snapped up within an hour at CVS stores in 20 states, slots remained open all day at CVS pharmacies in Alabama, South Carolina and Louisiana.

The dozens of open appointment slots in the three Southern states stood in sharp contrast to the availability in states such as Delaware, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, where appointments generally were gone by midmorning or earlier. CVS and other retailers typically post appointment slots around 7 a.m. for the next day.

In many counties across the three states — particularly in rural areas — retailers and outpatient clinics are among the few places offering covid-19 shots. CVS and other large pharmacies, including Walgreens and Walmart, are among the biggest providers of the vaccinations.

South Carolina health officials said they noticed demand was waning at some vaccine sites — and, as a result, lowered the age eligibility for the shots from 65 to 55 starting Monday.

“Reports here and there from around the state, not everywhere, indicate vaccine appointments have not been filling, so this was the time to do this,” said Nick Davidson, senior deputy for public health at the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Marvella Ford, a professor in the department of public health sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, wasn’t surprised by the vacant appointments.

I believe this UTMB lab study was just reported a month or so ago. Better than bad results, but of course, grain of salt warranted. They did make the vaccine after all. They’re not gonna release a study saying “lol fuck it didn’t work”

Seeing as how everyone I work closely with - and a full 93% of our employees have received both shots - I GET TO HAVE MEETINGS AGAIN WITH NEW MAKS!!!

It’s such a small, insignificant thing but it made me so happy to hear that. First change that makes me truly see some light at the end of this yearlong hellscape.

Also, I’ve helped some people in private messages but if any of y’all have family or friends in North Alabama (Huntsville over to The Shoals; basically the geographical area of the Huntsville Hospital Health System), please message me and I’ll do what I can to get them set up for an appointment.

I have a client whose management is pretty Trumpy and has been wanting me to come out there for some in-person sessions for awhile. I'll be vaccinated soon and I'm actually excited to get on a plane and go to suburban Georgia for work. What the fuck?!

Stop by Douglasville and pick me up an ounce of that good old Georgia meth. If’n ya have the time.

My 83 year old dad was finally fully vax'd so I went to visit him out west for the first time in 6 months with a box of oysters and some prime rib. Also got my first vaccination at San Angelo today.  20 minutes in and out.  My kid and her college roommates also got their first this weekend at COTA.
Best weekend I have had in a year.
This has probably been posted but it was a good tool for finding the doses.

20 minutes? Shit where I went they wanted to make sure you didn’t react and we waited about 15-20 after the shot.

It took about 10 minutes to get the shot and then I waited 10 minutes to see if I had a reaction and then said fuck it, my dad could drive me to the hospital if needed.  We had to get on with our rat killin'.

I expect that will change before I actually end up out there. I told them mid April, since that'll be my 2nd shot +2 weeks.

I was worried he might run out of material after Trump but this is great.

It’s all adding up. Constantly bringing up Trump in every thread. Traveling to rural Georgia first chance you get. You’re a closet Trumper aren’t you? Like those priests who demonize the gays while gargling cock and balls every weekend.

Wait, wait. You can just buy extra vaccines and give them to Americans? What a novel concept. But let's talk about Biden's reduced mental capacity.

Only a dumbass equates the importance and value of vaccines with mass testing at this phase of the pandemic.

So the running tally is something like 600MM total doses of PFE/MRNA by July.

And for JNJ 100MM by July and another 100MM at some point tbd.

We're going to seriously need to start considering where these extra doses are going. I would think the majority of those 100 mm JNJ ones will be going abroad, no?

I'm thinking they're setting them aside for the under 16 crowd after the safety trials for that set have been confirmed. But yes, it would be good if we can simultaneously send some out to countries worse off than us.

Right now they probably want to be absolutely sure they have enough to get everyone here vaccinated this year. Agreed though, there is a point where passing those doses on to Mexico, Europe, or the developing world makes more sense.

I think that we need to build excess supply to account for waste, pediatric administration, and for JNJ the potential for a boost regimen as the prime/boost arm of the JNJ trial completes. Also consider if the durability data suggest that the vax needs to be administered on annual basis then we need a stockpile to start rolling out boosters in 1Q 2022. Assuming 80% vax adoption, those numbers would cover approximately 2.5 yrs of vaccination administrations for the adult US population. Assuming pediatric coverage, less than 2 years.  Assuming that JNJ evolves into a two shot regimen with annual booster, only maybe 1.5 yrs. That's all before accounting for waste. Seems prudent to make sure that we can get through the end of 2022 with supplies under contract.

yep, vaccine diplomacy coming.  Canada and Mexico first and then will start allocating elsewhere.

China isn't building up goodwill after releasing this godforsaken virus on the world.  Someone said it better than me regarding China's relationship with other countries around the world, China is like the husband of a housewife with no education and no way out that just found out he's been banging 5 chicks on the side.  She fucking hates him but she's got nowhere else to go

So glad COVID is over!

While the story is unduly alarmist, the core conclusion is one that makes much sense.  We are NOT going to "eradicate" COVID -- at least not anytime soon.  Just like we've never eradicated the flu.

Our goal should be to knock it down to not being a worse problem than the seasonal flu.  Here are the conclusions of the article for best path forward, which aren't off-bse:

Quote

The two experts lay out five strategies to prepare for this unpleasant possibility: 1) Help intensify global vaccination to squash the emergence of variants; 2) Step up monitoring for variants; 3) Ready hospitals for winter surges; 4) Work to reduce transmission in the off-season; and 5) Prepare high-risk individuals for winter mitigation efforts, such as seasonal physical distancing.

1 -- yep, we're going to have to stay in the vaccine game (updates and boosters) for some time.  Just like we do with the flu.

2 -- yep, we'll have to pay attention to what strains are coming to the forefront.  Just like we do with the flu.

3 -- yep, be ready for outbreaks of expected seasonal illnesses.  Of course, one thing the article doesn't touch on much is how the current vaccines, while they may not prevent ALL illness, are VERY effective at preventing serious illness leading to hospitalization and death.  So, we may still have people with a nasty cold....but not many getting sick enough to overwhelm hospitals (IF...we can get enough needles in arms).

4 -- yep, get people vaccinated, to make them less likely to have a highly transmittable case.  And monitor local outbreaks.  We've always been willing to shut down XYZ elementary school for a week when there's a big flu outbreak there.  We should continue to do so.  Again, modify our existing flu protocols to handle this.  And be willing to take lesser measures as appropriate -- maybe your office requires masks for a period when there's been a couple of positive cases in the building, that sort of thing.

5 -- Hopefully not necessary.  The best way to help high risk individuals is to get shots in their arms.  That should be the #1 focus.

We can get COVID to a place where it's just like the seasonal flu.  Which is a risk that we've already established that we can live with.  Let's get it there.

Opening day is the only day they’d have sold out. It’s essentially operating at 100 percent capacity for them while getting to cover themselves by being able to point at mitigation measures.

Add soon as Wheelie announced the removal of all restrictions last week I went out of my way to drive over 6 hours round trip to get the vaccine in west Texas last weekend. I was willing to wait for my demographics' turn as long as we kept things status quo in the state but once he announced full Thunderdome rules it's every mofo for himself.
