My son's high school teacher bailed out in the middle of a class this week after students refused to wear masks in her classroom. Apparently several students took up the Cult 45 mantra and the teacher had a breakdown. The teacher walked out of the classroom and has not returned.

Getting different messaging from the Superintendent, school board, principal and teachers. Complete shit show.

An English teacher at SVHS pulled my daughter aside yesterday and confided in her that he won't be returning next year because of said shit show.

The Rodeo shutting down in the afternoon was the appetizer for the Gobert/Tom Hanks main course later that night.  What a wild fucking day.

To me the wild day was Friday the 13th.  (Never thought of that until now, actually.)  It's when the panic buying peaked.  I was in a Walmart and it was surreal.  They weren't even stocking the shelves at one point.  They would just drop a pallet and people would rake it out.  Never thought I'd see that and hope I never see it again.

Holy shit, that is a terrific and rage-inducing account. Sure I know what I was doing that day but didn't really understand all of these things because we were traveling on my son's Spring Break. We visited my mom two days in a row at a nursing home in San Antonio. On the 3rd day, she texted me to say I couldn't visit because the facility was being shut down to visitors. We were all so lucky that none of us had it/spread it.

I think Maggie means, it was discussed while Dotard was potus and he didn’t want to involve the ex-presidents then. Could be wrong.

I feel like he wouldn't want to do it now either, though.

He needs the pandemic to get worse to pin it on Biden and run again in 2024.  He would never go out and tell people to get the vaccine.  Shit, he had his fucking chance when he and Melania got it done and no one even knew.

Rant incoming: What is it about a mask requirement that is such a hot-button issue for Republicans, compared to every other thing we have in our lives that regulates our conduct to protect public safety? Why do I have to get a driver's license to drive a car? Why do I have to maintain auto insurance, or have my car inspected annually? Why am I forced to comply with onerous and arbitrary speed limits and traffic signals while driving? Why am I only allowed to water my yard certain days of the week? Why does my house need to meet all kinds of codes for construction and utilities? Why can't I freely discharge a firearm, or fireworks, within city limits? Why do I need a permit to discharge pollution to the air or a body of water? Why can't I burn trash in my yard? Why does a person need a license to practice medicine, law, or engineering? Why do I need a doctor's prescription to buy an otherwise- legal drug from a pharmacy? Shit, why can't I buy liquor on Sunday, or choose to gamble in a casino in Texas?

All these things limit our freedoms, as much or more than a mask requirement. What is so uniquely terrible about masks? Regardless of how this pandemic turns out, when I go out in public, I'm going to wear a $%^&* mask every day for the rest of my life just because it seems to trigger these snowflakes.

Because Trump told them the whole thing was a hoax, wearing a mask is gay and dear leader is never wrong.

The 11th for me was the day I took the afternoon off work and headed to HEB where I, as a single man living alone, purchased $350 in groceries (mostly canned soup, other pantry shit, frozen food, and, yes, toilet paper), which allowed survival for about two months, making space for a decent transition to delivery, avoiding the madness, and everything else. I don't think I physically entered an HEB again until September.

This was among the wisest decisions I've ever made in my nearly 50 year history of making incredibly stupid ones.

It's an outward symbol of tribal affliation, like wearing a sharp polo in the right shade of burnt orange from the Co-Op.

Here's a great podcast that talks about this: https://youarenotsosmart.com/2020/07/31/yanss-185-why-the-reason-behind-why-some-people-refuse-to-wear-masks-during-a-pandemic-has-little-to-do-with-the-masks-themselves/

And here's some earlier work YANSS did about tribalism: https://youarenotsosmart.com/transcripts/transcript-tribal-psychology/

Both MERS and SARS have animal reservoirs, both were squashed by competent international efforts led by the United States.

We were going into month 4 of the pandemic at this point a year ago, so it was quite possibly already too late, but I'd still like the chance to re-run the simulation replacing Trump with a normal dipshit GOP (without Trump there is no Mike Flynn and no Q).

Trump completely shit in the well with China and created an environment of blatant hostility between the governments. He compounded that by pulling the CDC out of China, including cancelling a position that trained Chinese field epidemiologists. Her position was cancelled effective Sept 2019, after she found out, she left in July 2019.

https://www.usnews.com/news/top-news/articles/2020-03-25/exclusive-us-slashed-cdc-staff-inside-china-prior-to-coronavirus-outbreak

Even with that, Trump knew exactly how bad this was in January and blatantly lied. That doesn't happen with a normal GOP. Any other President in US history gets to work on isolating and eradicating Covid the second they find out about it. In January, there was still a good chance to contain this.

Add in all the Trump political appointees and his overriding his own public health experts, poltical control of the CDC, fucked relationships with the WHO and the EU. None of that happens under a normal GOP President.

I'm barely scratching the surface and don't want to prolong it, but It's impossible to overstate how much and how many ways Trump fucked our ability to respond.

Both mers and sars are much more deadly than COVID-19 with mers around 35% fatality rate all comers and sars up to 50% in >65. That makes a huge difference in how they were initially handled. They are in no way comparable to Covid-19. This disease was going to spread globally no matter what Trump did or didn’t do. Neither of the new dominant mutations even started in the US. Trump fucked up. It was going to be endemic no matter who was POTUS

Maybe, maybe not. Doesn't matter though, we only get to run this simulation once and it's already happened.

This is literally all it is.

I've been thinking and it is this, but I think it's also because before now, the only people we ever saw wearing masks were the Chinese.  They don't want to be like the Chinese or any foreigner, for that matter.

Another reason American Exceptionalism sucks.

Not really true.  We can model the simulation and the various outcomes. Case count is just one of them. Epidemiologists and economists will be toe holding their tenure over this shit for many years to come.

It’s pretty much impossible to eradicate a human disease that can hide out in animal populations

The origin of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus causing the global coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic, remains a mystery. Current evidence suggests a likely spillover into humans from an animal reservoir. Understanding the host range and identifying animal species that are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection may help to elucidate the origin of the virus and the mechanisms underlying cross-species transmission to humans. Here we demonstrated that white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), an animal species in which the angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) – the SARS-CoV-2 receptor – shares a high degree of similarity to humans, are highly susceptible to infection. Intranasal inoculation of deer fawns with SARS-CoV-2 resulted in established subclinical viral infection and shedding of infectious virus in nasal secretions. Notably, infected animals transmitted the virus to non-inoculated contact deer. Viral RNA was detected in multiple tissues 21 days post-inoculation (pi). All inoculated and indirect contact animals seroconverted and developed neutralizing antibodies as early as day 7 pi. The work provides important insights into the animal host range of SARS-CoV-2 and identifies white-tailed deer as a susceptible wild animal species to the virus.

That press teleconference with Nancy Messonnier in February where she broke the news about the severity (while Trump was flying back from India) has been tagged as THE issue (where Trump then dug in his heels), but I'm gob smacked that anyone thinks he would have acted otherwise or could have been persuaded at that point in time to mitigate the spread. It's like in retrospect they are trying to make him out to not be the money driven callous narcissist he always has been. He would not have told anyone anything that would have hurt his ability to make money and get re-elected.

I was assisting the elderly and organizing patient flow directly outside the Gregory gym covid clinic this afternoon.

I was treated to 3 hours of yelling and screaming by a team of shitty angry “Christian” preachers. These assholes featured an upside down American flag while spewing all kinds of hate and anti-science Bronze Age idiocy.

Fuck off back to the quad or Guadalupe you fucking fucks!!! Horrific being a captive audience. EABOD

This shit makes me worried that these nuts are going to start treating vaccination clinics like abortion clinics.

Feels like it’s only a matter of time before we get an Eric Rudolph situation or one of them shooting a doctor or clinic worker.

Yep. I have the same concern. But you know what? I’m not going to stop going to the vax clinic to help. Possible threats just strengthen our resolve.

LOL.  Is this how they motivate us to get vaccinated?  By saying if we do, we can have small family gatherings by July?  What kind of motivation is that?  The message needs to be - get vaccinated, live life.  That's what it should be, and that's how you motivate people to get it.  If you haven't had it by July 4th, that's either a choice (and fuck you) or you're just unlucky and should continue avoid crowds.  But everyone else should do whatever the fuck they want to.

I saw a doctor on tv (CNN?) a few days ago say that he wouldn't feel comfortable eating in a restaurant, even after being vaccinated. Now I'm no doctor, per se, but that seems wrong and incredibly irresponsible to say on national tv.
