Who do they actually lead for in recruiting?  Miller seemed aggy bound, but looks LSU now.  Maybe McFall and Bussey?  They seem to be going all in on TyAnthony Smith and using the bleak depth chart at LB for them.

Jimbo isn't gonna have to recruit any more....he just believes that great recruits will just show up and wanna play for him.

i think it's really weird they focus SO much on on the Texas part/trying to brand as "Texas"

no other non mainline state school really does. top of my head - FSU, Michigan State, Louisiana is weird but even then they own "LSU", Kansas State, Mississippi State, Oregon State, Washington State, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, NC State, Arizona State, VaTech, Utah State - all own their title/who they are. meanwhile out here we have Texas A&M wanting to be something else entirely.

even schools like Texas Tech aren't out there focusing on the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Auburn has a weird history - became Ag & Mechanical College of Alabama in 1870, then Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1899, then Auburn in 1960 " to acknowledge the varied academic programs and larger curriculum of a major university"

come to think of it there is no other FBS team that has A&M in their name other than Texas A&M - everyone else either changed it like Auburn, never had it in their name like Arkansas (Ark Industrial University for like 25 years then U of A), have it in their name but don't use it (to be fair Louisiana State University and Ag and Mechanical College is a long ass name) or Mississippi State University for Ag & Applied Science

basically all the other large land grant universities either changed their name (in the 60s for a ton of them), still have it as their name but don't use it or never really had A&M in what they use anyway?

very strange. just own who you are. it's easy. you spent how many years screaming from the rooftops how you are the anti-Texas only to now try to be the university of and for "Texas"

they can't avoid being weird no matter how hard they try.

edit: i left out my favorite part of this entire thing. in 1963 when the legislature changed the name officially to Texas A&M they said that the A&M is merely a symbolic link to the schools past and it no longer stands for "Agriculture & Mechanical" lol

Clemson A&M was founded as an all-white, all-male military school. They finally realized the name was lame, so they dropped the A&M part. That happened back around the time of the last fightin' Texas aggy natty in football, so you can file it under the heading of archaeology.

Just aren’t any qbs in Texas I guess

Crazier shit has happened than them pissing King’s dad off and him shitting all over them with people in the Texas HSFB and 7 on 7 ranks. It’s almost cliched that that would happen. They seem to be obstinately only looking at OOS QB prospects for whatever reason though.

They'd never admit it, but right now they'd kill for Trey Owens.

QBs in Texas w/ 247 composite rank. * = has A&M offer

  • *4 - DJ Lagway (Florida)
  • *44 - Marcos Davila (Purdue)
  • 53 - Michael Hawkins (OU)
  • 60 - Mabrey Mettauer (Wisconsin)
  • 65 - Trey Owens (Texas)
  • 83 - Cole Welliver (uncommitted)
  • *85 - Will Hammond (TTU)
  • 114 - Hauss Hejny (TCU)
  • 122 - Deuce Adams (L'Ville)

for comparison, Hammond is slightly higher rated than Anthony Mattox (.8833 vs .8826)

they have made 17 QB offers in this cycle. 3 from Texas, 14 elsewhere.

Lagway is going to be a no for aggy, but they’ll try. I think Mattauer would listen if offered. But in Jimbo’s mind Maddox sets the floor for their 2024 QB class and they can go big game, national hunting for QB2. They will try and they will fail.

Has he been practicing this spring? LOL either way.

I don't think so, but he started last year and probably was going to this since Bryce Foster tore his ACL and doesn't seem interested in football.

Question now is, who hell is going to be the aggy Center?  A true freshman?  Some guy named Remington Strickland?

I don't think that's right. There's no way they have someone who works for MI6 also playing on the OL at ATM. If so, that dude would be fucking entire defensive fronts on his own, using gadgets hidden in helmets and cleats and shit.

A charming article.  (I think he means the '24 class, btw.)

A few choice excerpts:

(Edit - darn, the whole thing is choice-excerpt-worthy!)

"The good news is A&M already has a quarterback in the class in Hattiesburg Oak Grove (MS) quarterback Anthony Maddox, who they are very high on, and he will be back in Aggieland this weekend for the spring game."

"First and foremost, A&M fans should be pretty excited to have Maddox in the class. Not long after arriving on campus, offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino zeroed in on Maddox and. got him in the fold."

"Needless to say, with Noland committing to Ohio State this past weekend, A&M certainly feels better already having the Oak Grove quarterback in the class to serve as one of the leaders of the class rather than having to head into the summer without a quarterback commit for the second straight year."

"Little Christian Academy quarterback Walker White was one of the first players that Bobby Petrino offered when he arrived in Aggieland. While he ultimately ended up canceling his visit to Aggieland, A&M could opt to make another run at the Auburn commit."

Mapping out potential options at QB for A&M in 2023 cycle

Andrew Hattersley

Texas A&M missed out on one of their top quarterback options on Saturday night when Top247 quarterback Air Noland committed to Ohio State.

It was a disappointing blow for the Aggies who had made Noland a priority for quite some time. The good news is A&M already has a quarterback in the class in Hattiesburg Oak Grove (MS) quarterback Anthony Maddox, who they are very high on, and he will be back in Aggieland this weekend for the spring game.

There is still a feeling that A&M will likely look to take two quarterbacks this cycle thought and a couple different directions they could go. Here is a look at a couple different avenues that they could choose to go.

Pursue Flips?

With over six months to go until the early signing period, Texas A&M is not likely to stop pursuing other quarterbacks to join him.

The Aggies landed four-star Montgomery Bell quarterback Marcel Reed just days before the early signing period and the staff has shown they are willing to stay on guys even if they are committed elsewhere.

With that in mind, A&M will likely continue to recruit Noland as well as five-star Florida commit and Willis signal caller DJ Lagway. To be certain neither of these would be easy flips to pull off and both players appear to be very comfortable with their current situations but A&M still has some time to chip away in both recruitments and potentially try to get them back on campus either during the summer of fall.

Washington quarterback commit EJ Caminong picked up an offer from A&M in late March and the Garfield (WA) signal-caller told 247Sports’ Brandon Huffman that A&M, Oregon, Oregon State and Cal have continued to reach out. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound quarterback told Huffman that he remains firm in his pledge to the Huskies, but he did just make a trip to Oregon State and has indicated a willingness to take official visits which means leaves the door slightly open for other programs. A&M has had some recent success in the Northwest including landing Mark Nabou out of the Seattle area so Caminong represents at least an option to keep an eye on.

Little Christian Academy quarterback Walker White was one of the first players that Bobby Petrino offered when he arrived in Aggieland. While he ultimately ended up canceling his visit to Aggieland, A&M could opt to make another run at the Auburn commit.

The Aggies also have an offer on the table to four-star Purdue commit Marcos Davila, who had 36 touchdown passes against 12 interceptions last season for Midland Legacy. Davila is rated as the No. 180 prospect nationally and No. 11 quarterback in the 2024 class, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

Uncommitted options

While a good portion of the top quarterbacks in the country have committed to schools, there are still several who have yet to make a pledge to a school.

After picking up an offer from Texas A&M earlier this month, Highland Springs (VA) signal caller Khristian Martin wasted no time making his first trip to College Station this week. Martin had over 3,000 yards passing and 43 passing touchdowns last season and has several Power Five schools in the mix.

A&M will likely continue to evaluate other quarterbacks as well and it would not be surprising to see new offers continue to go out.

Roll with Maddox

First and foremost, A&M fans should be pretty excited to have Maddox in the class. Not long after arriving on campus, offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino zeroed in on Maddox and. got him in the fold.

The Oak Grove (MS) native The Oak Grove (MS) native has already made one trip to campus and is gearing up for another this week for the Maroon and White spring game. With Reed arriving this summer, A&M could opt to roll with one quarterback as well and then potentially look to add another arm via the transfer portal down the road if they feel it is necessary though it would likely have to be a younger quarterback who could be ok with sitting for a year given the presence of Weigman.

Needless to say, with Noland committing to Ohio State this past weekend, A&M certainly feels better already having the Oak Grove quarterback in the class to serve as one of the leaders of the class rather than having to head into the summer without a quarterback commit for the second straight year.

As a junior, Maddox led Oak Grove to a 10-3 mark while completing 62 percent of his passes to go with 20 touchdowns and three interceptions.

How dare you besmirch the name and reputation of whatever they can dredge out of the portal from Akron to be a day 1 starter sir.

As someone who grew up in Sugar Land, I can tell you this is the least surprising profile ever between the name, picture and the high school

As someone who also grew up in Sugar Land, the thought of someone being expected to contribute meaningful minutes in the SEC less than two years after leaving FBCA is hilarious.
