If Trump, who lost the electoral college by the same margin he won in 2016 that was a "historic blowout" by their own standards, is somehow President of the United States after 12:01pm on January 20, 2021, the entire country will rip apart.

i wonder what would happen if his shenanigans pay off.  he lost popular vote by 7 million, huge, but dont agree that he "lost electoral college" since that is what is still being litigated.

The lawsuit is fucked up for multiple reasons. Obviously, there is the question of standing and states' right - "the law".  Obviously there is the fact that the basis for the challenge lacks any compelling evidence - "the facts".  But something I think what is being under-appreciated is how fucked up it is that the official state governments are using not only the tax dollars, but the authority, of the state to pursue a purely political endeavor.  This is not fighting for water rights for all Texans, or even a partisan policy issue like abortion rights.  This is purely an attempt to install a political ally, and using the state government to do so.  It is extremely similar to what Trump got impeached for - using the government's funds and position for purely political gain.  It is corruption, right out in the open.

Yup, our current constitutional government is not sustainable. I fear there will be serious unrest within the next decade and possibly succession or at worst civil war. A country cannot exist if half of its people and politicians are willing to ignore the constitution if their side doesn't win and to undermine the winner's administration.

Not gonna happen. The bigger problem is as I've described above, a complete undermining of our constitutional democracy which is not sustainable.

Here's the thing about Trump: if you look at any time he declared bankruptcy, he was claiming that it wasn't going to happen up until the moment that it did.  He's never going to publicly concede the inevitable.  But, he still signed the papers in the end.

Interesting question. If California tried to secede and become it's own country, would the United States really go to war? How would republicans justify hating California and say it's "failing" while then fighting to keep it in the union? Would they have to admit or acknowledge that California pays more into the federal government that it gets back and that the south is the opposite? I think it would be more of a political clusterfuck like Brexit than an actual war.

People can't hardly get up the energy to pick up their own food from the restaurant. There'll be a bunch of TikTok videos in camo but ain't nobody gonna go to war.

All 50 states have certified their votes.

He lost the Electoral College 306-232.  You're letting objective facts be clouded by nonsense.

In 4 days, they'll meet and certify the EC results.

Exactly. Everyone understands that the EC hasn't formally voted but we know the basic results, minus faithless electors, unless Trump can get SCOTUS to give him the election.

Acting like the EC vote is unknown at the moment is like when your football team is down by 40 with a minute left, the announcers are declaring that you've lost, and you're screaming at the TV that the refs could still declare a forfeit of the winning team.

If Trump is declared the winner of the election without any evidence of large scale fraud, the legitimacy of the federal govt seriously comes into question. Why pay your taxes if you don't believe they are the real govt. Why follow any law, other than the immediate fear of prison? I don't think America is over with SCOTUS giving the election to Trump but its a big step to what could be considered the eventual decline of the US.

You're just gonna discount the Regulators in Alamance County in 1770? Or the New England secession movement of the first decade of the 1800's?

Nah, taking your marbles and going home is an American tradition. We're sore losers from the get-go.

You're overthinking this.

Because Team MAGA doesn't think critically about anything anymore.  It's A) stay in power, and B) piss off libs.  The end justifies the means. Rinse and repeat.

The Mitt Romneys would wring their hands and point out the revenue concerns and whatnot, but their voices would be drowned out with the chorus of "let those tofu eating motherfuckers survive on their own".

Yep. They're in the BOGO bin until somebody makes some long boring movies about them with inspirational full-measure chords swelling up while cameras pan across 50-year-old reenactors playing teenagers.

You could probably make a pretty compelling case that America is over if the highest court in the land rules that all mail-in votes don't count after the fact, paving the way for state legislatures to assign electors based on only the in-person votes without a single case of "fraud" being proven in lower courts.

There had better not be a single dissenter among the judges on this one.

I always love the discussions about California seceding.  We're talking about a single state that supplies 1/3 the United States' vegetable crop, 2/3 the fruits & nuts (NTTIAWWT), and almost 1/4 the national dairy products. Throw in Silicon Valley?  No way could they go quietly into the night.

I don't think anybody's seceding, but if anybody did, people who have things to sell still generally want to sell them.

Sure, but they would gain leverage, and as others noted, there's the whole "contributes more to the federal budget than takes out in services" thing.

The military would step in at minute one.

Holy shit, these morally bankrupt dumbasses are actually saying out loud they want nothing to do with the people who are paying for their depravity.

FUCK THEM ALL.

I've been silent on the blowback to "Hillbilly Elegy" because I thought it was stupid. But let me tell you -- I vacation in Appalachia, because it's beautiful. But the people? The LAZIEST, STUPIDEST motherfuckers on the planet. White trash doesn't even begin to describe them.

Go ahead. Secede. And when your rent comes due, don't fucking come crying, bitches.

I think our military only fights brown people these days. Sure there are plenty of Hispanics in California, but I'm really skeptical it would be an actual civil war fought by the military. I could be wrong. I just hope things can fix themselves, I'm just not optimistic. We were already heading towards extraordinary polarization, and trump was the nuke that may blow our democracy to shit.

trump's reactions to all this have been exactly as predicted.  his immaturity and insecurity have formed delusions of grandeur.  he's a spoiled little rich kid with a sense of entitlement and a belief that the law does not apply to him.  he made it clear he wanted to be president for 20 more years, and wasn't going to let the constitution stop him.  what bothers me is congress going along with it, never slapping him back down to reality.  they should have learned by their obstructionist party of no stance during Obama, that the dems can (and have) do the same thing.  if they allow trump to not disclose his taxes, well now no president has to.  if they allow this kind of attack on innocent, legal, fair voters, then every election from here on out will go to the supreme court.

the fact that none of them are coming forward publicly and acknowledging biden's win, and reprimanding trump for his actions, is way more disturbing to me than trump's behavior.

How exactly would Cali secede? Are they going to purchase all federal property within their borders? What about citizens within their borders who don’t want to be California citizens? It’s stupid.

Not to mention if congress ratified such an agreement why wouldn’t Mexico immediately annex the territory? Same with Texas

Agree completely, I guess I could have worded it differently, but this is my primary concern, in addition to the 20 years of partisan build up that trained voters into actually voting for a man-toddler conman. There is no coming back from this. I doubt it will happen, but it would help if SCOTUS issued a unanimous per curium opinion stating that the state vs. state clause does not cover this type of case and that they cannot be brought ever again. Otherwise, this will happen every 4 years.

It actually makes more sense for Cali/Ore/Wash than for anyone else. And no, they wouldn't purchase shit. They pay more to the rest of us than we do to them. No, they'd take it all, and say "Come and take it" and the Cialis swilling pantywaists in the Republican party would bitch and moan and do nothing. Kinda like what they did during the Vietnam War.

Yup. Those issues arise with any secession. I would hope they would say "If you don't want to live here, GTFO." And likewise "If you want to come here, welcome." I'd strongly consider moving there to avoid the red nightmare the south would become.

Again, I'm not saying this is at all likely, but something is going to have to give soon if republicans refuse to acknowledge the legitimacy of the duly elected president over the next four years, and if they pull this shit anytime a democrat wins.

Lol, how exactly would that happen? California would secede as it's own republic. Mexico would probably sit on the sidelines and be nice because they'll need good diplomatic relationships with the new California if it were independent.

Just a thought experiment. Fact is what is currently happening is not sustainable. If republicans refuse to acknowledge Biden as president when he is inaugurated, the country is going to implode one way or another. Secession may not even be necessary. Everyone is on their own.

Can’t help but laugh at the dumbassery behind “election should be decided on election night, it shouldn’t drag on for weeks”.... it gets called within the week of the election, prob shoulda been called a few days earlier. then maga drags it out for months.
