Ok I just read the whole thing and here’s my legal analysis:

The suit filed by the felon AG from Texas is so damn frivolous he should be given the choice of either having his license to practice law revoked or tarred and feathered. It is THAT BAD.  The worst ambulance chaser bullshit attorney would reject signing that steaming pile of dogshit Paxton wrote before the SUPREME COURT to INVALIDATE an election.

I agree with twicehorn that because it’s an original jurisdiction case the supreme court may be forced to write some sort of opinion when they dismiss it. If that opinion isn’t 9-0 then this country is in trouble.

If the SCOTUS lets the Texas case go ANYWHERE beyond simply dismissing it.....I hope like a motherfucker that every blue state out there sues the fuck out of Texas in the SCOTUS.  Both for being too Republican in its bullshittery (repressive voting practices, minority disenfranchisement, etc., skewing national elections improperly), AND too namby-pamby in its bullshittery (Texas, you are harming your northern neighbors by letting in too many illegal messicans who head up our way and cost us money).  And everything else in between.  Contributing to environmental pollution by exporting petrochemicals, whatever else anyone can think of.

You want the world to be this way, Paxton?  Abbott?  Patrick?  You want that?

Welcome....

I really, really hope you're right, and we'll look back at this in a couple of days and laugh at all the dipshits who got their hopes sky high before being crushed. And those on the list are make to look like the baffoons that they are. But, like you say, even a 7-2 vote would be a disaster.

Seems like long ago, but recall back in the fall when people were feeling some sympathy for Zelensky? Trying to fight against Putin's aggression and hang onto the fragile democratic attempts after the Ukrainian election. Desperate for money to purchase weapons and gets a phone call....
Now I expect Zelensky is looking west and saying, "you had it all America and you pissed it all away."

The world is doing this. I’m getting despondent messages from friends all over the place saying “if it can happen there, we have no hope.”

Yet 17 other state AGs signed onto it.  The R party is fucking broken.  It's fucking gone.

Are dissenting votes to plain as day rulings held against judges? Like could Judge Beer Bro cast a dissenting vote since he knows the lawsuit will be dismissed, but wants to stick it to the Dems from his hearing by making it seem like there was some legitimacy to it?

So much this.

We are supposed to be the shining beacon of unassailable democratic institutions.  What were revealing is that it can all be undone by literally a handful of sociopaths at the top.  To the world, we looked like an unconquerable fortress of democracy.  But it turns out that our walls are actually made of tissue paper.

We offered a vision of the world that was NOT Thunderdome, that was NOT entirely dominated by whoever has the power in the moment, where the strength was in our institutions.  Anyone who has had their eyes even half open now knows that ain't the case.  The world is and remains Thunderdome.  We're just violent monkeys, beating the fuck out of each other for access to the best feeding grounds, and that's almost certainly all we're ever going to be.

Interesting question. If California tried to secede and become it's own country, would the United States really go to war? How would republicans justify hating California and say it's "failing" while then fighting to keep it in the union? Would they have to admit or acknowledge that California pays more into the federal government that it gets back and that the south is the opposite? I think it would be more of a political clusterfuck like Brexit than an actual war.

Politicians, especially Republican politicians, seem pretty unbothered about being outed as a hypocrites.

I'm not a lawyer.  But even I recognize that the USSC saying that yes, you are allowed to sue these states because you don't like their state laws would create a precedence that would create an absolute avalanche of USSC cases of states suing other states, and regardless of partisanship, that is exactly what the USSC doesn't want.

I know it's not the same thing, but similar.  After CO legalized weed, we were sued by several of our border states for exactly that reason.  They didn't like our laws.  Supreme Ct told them to get fucked.

we all know how this ends.  they'll create a fake oval office at mar-a-lago for trump to waddle into every day around noon, get on phones that aren't connected and computers that aren't plugged in and bark out orders to people who don't work for the government.  it's like the limo with the cutout from cannonball run that makes it look like the monkey is driving.

all to avoid hurting the feelings of one shitstain who claims to love this country but is trampling over every remaining good part of it.  nobody will tell him no.  nobody will tell him get the fuck outta here with that nonsense.  because ~40mm people are stupid enough, triggered enough, and desperate enough to follow his every whim.

when somebody yells fire in a crowded theater, you don't escort him out onto the street then leave.  you take away his fucking megaphone.

enough is enough.

i can't figure out 2024.  i sort of have the feeling that they are only increasing their brand as the retards with shit smeared in their hair, like, even beyond their 2016-2020 version.  you get four more years of olds dying (praise be) and new voters entering that aren't poisoned by fox news yet.  they could really be ending it all.

Seriously, when do we (the royal WE, you know, the editorial) stop pretending they aren't regards with shit smeared in their hair?  Are people going to just pretend it isn't happening as it becomes more and more blatant?  I fear this is a rhetorical question, but come the fuck on.

Missed it.  Roy also hates Paxton, I believe.  So there's that.

Chip Roy, from what I have heard, is a decent, principled, patriotic, nice person who just happens to be both highly ideologically conservative and also a touch gullible.  I'll give him credit on this one that he genuinely believes that Trump was probably shenaniganed out of Georgia but won't support the death of Federalism or "civil war by litigation."* He seems to be in the middle of a Jeff Flake/Justin Amash type journey. Who knows how far he'll get.

Counterpoint: he tweeted at Biden to kiss his ass about wearing masks.  So I refute your entire stance.

What Republican is going to stand a chance?

^^^ This.

THERE. IS. NO.  GOP.  ONLY TRUMP.  That is reality.  As long as he lives, Trump is either the king, or the kingmaker.  He could decree that the only suitable candidate for president is Cartman from South Park, and not only would the GOP nominate him, he'd likely win the election.  But rest assured, it won't be that nuts.  He'll just declare that Donny Jr. or Ivanka is the only choice for president, and the GOP will have no choice but to go along with it, nominate him/her.....and they'll have a good shot at winning.

This doesn't end unless and until the entire Trump clan dies out.  Fuck, even the goddamned Mussolini family is staging a comeback in Italy.

By a much slimmer margin in the battleground states than anyone is comfortable with.  And I think anyone with any sense realizes that without COVID -- both as a political hit to him and as a physical event that changed voting patterns -- he was on track to win a second term.  In short, the Trump fans aren't wrong -- but for COVID, he would have won.

And the party is just him now (for fuck's sake, THAT'S THEIR OFFICIAL PLATFORM).  He controls -- and I mean CONTROLS, like any cult leader does -- the single biggest voting bloc in the GOP coalition.  They are the controlling bloc -- without them, no GOP candidate wins anything.  So, Trump controls the GOP.  The GOP is the self-serving toy of a psychotic deranged narcissist, and he is doing and will do it exactly what you would expect him to do.

It won't get any better until he dies.  That's it.  It's that black and white.

Pretty sure he's talking about the Republican nomination. Trump wins that the second he declares. He already has 70 million votes in the bag (roughly 40M who just vote R no matter what plus 30M MAGA loons). I highly doubt he wins--even though it likely won't be Biden he'd be running against--but it's still another year of being forced to give him a massive platform.

most said he was destined to lose because of demographics from the outset.  he lost by about the amount demographics said he should.  covid only got pollsters excited that it was going to be a blowout, and we bought into it.  but he lost by the amount he was supposed to lose by.

I know you want to believe that.

I do too.

But we all know that COVID had a material effect on voting patterns.  And again, when we look at whisper-thin margins in battleground states, I think it's quite likely he wins but for COVID.  No, there's no way to prove either hypothesis, you've got me there.  It's impossible to do.  But you damned well know COVID was a difference-maker....when the difference turned out to be not very much.
