Saturday Recruiting Nuggets from Bayou Splash

Sonny Shipp

(Some key points - Simmons sticking around in Baton Rouge today.  Also, about Mack - " we shared the same sentiment in LSU was trailing Texas, and probably Florida too ..." and this interesting bit - "Word is he also missed his flight to Gainesville on Friday, so it will be interesting to see if he makes it there today." 👀  👀  👀 )

(Edit - from Gators 247, on Mack "Says he’s in town but not to campus yet" ... so maybe they held that flight for him until he got to the airport ... )

Weather played havoc on LSU’s Bayou Splash last year. This year was a different story, as things went off without a hitch under hot and sunny skies in Baton Rouge.

The staff welcomed an estimated 50 prospects and their families from the 2024, 2025 and 2026 classes.

The day consisted of competitive games around the Football Ops to enjoying the pool and lazy river at the REC on campus with plenty of food to go around, including Louisiana seafood classics, fried chicken, red beans, jambalaya and others.

We will have much more after we catch up with those in attendance, but here are some nuggets to pass along this morning.

*** First off, the weekend is far from over for some prospects as they will be in town longer.

5-star EDGE Colin Simmons, 4-star RB Caden Durham, 4-star LB Tylen Singleton, 5-star WR Dakorien Moore and 5-star QB Bryce Underwood are among a handful of those who will stick around today.

Simmons made it in early Friday morning after staying longer than anticipated in New York and will spend the day with Frank Wilson and others on the staff before taking off for Duncanville on Sunday. He came in with his mother, little brother, grandmother, and one of his mother’s friends.

Durham’s mother will leave to head back home today, but Durham and his sister will hang around to spend time with Frank and Sherman Wilson and go back tomorrow.

At the midway point of the visit, I feel things are moving along nicely on both fronts.

*** 5-star QB Bryce Underwood returned for his third unofficial visit to LSU this year, and there is already talk of a fourth in the fall for a game in Tiger Stadium. Along with his mother, father, girlfriend and a few others, Joe Sloan got an opportunity to host them into the evening and to show why he and Underwood and his father have such a strong relationship.

With a January announcement on the docket, LSU is making Michigan sweat a lot, especially after this trip. We’ll have more on his visit when it wraps up.

*** Inside Louisiana, 5-star DL Dominick McKinley had not made it to campus over the summer. He was there on Friday, along with his mother and younger brother. LSU extended an offer to McKinley’s brother, Darryus McKinley, who is entering his sophomore year in the 6-foot-3, 240-pound range.

Jimmy Lindsey and Frank Wilson got that much-needed face-time with McKinley’s camp, particularly his mother, and the key will be continuing to build that relationship and building on the momentum from Friday.

*** Another in-state target in the trenches Brian Kelly is trying to land is Ole Miss commit Joseph Cryer. The Natchitoches Central product spent part of the last two days in Baton Rouge and is expected to head to Oxford after that. I like where LSU is in this recruitment and feel we will hear something sooner rather than later.

*** One guy missing was 4-star cornerback Wardell Mack. I caught up with someone close to his camp and we shared the same sentiment in LSU was trailing Texas, and probably Florida too, but that things had been trending better for the home team. That was until Mack didn’t show up. Word is he also missed his flight to Gainesville on Friday, so it will be interesting to see if he makes it there today.

*** Jelani Watkins flew out of New Orleans this morning to head back home with the intention of heading to Texas A&M’s pool party. Unless something changes on this visit, LSU should feel good about where it sits.

*** Blake Ivy and Ory Williams, two of LSU’s top offensive line targets, along with Cryer, both woke up in Baton Rouge this morning. Ivy is expected at A&M today and I don’t think it will be long before we hear something on him. I’m still leaning A&M’s way at the moment.

Williams is a different story and I think LSU gets some good news on that front before long after his time in town.

*** Frank Wilson spent time with his top two running back targets for 2025 in the Louisiana tandem of Harlem Berry and James Simon. Things continue to move in the right direction on both fronts.

*** We will have much more on the Splash throughout the day and weekend, bult buckle up because the next 10 days should be interesting to say the least.

Is Brian Kelly even in town for the lsu pool party? Sounds like every recruit is there just to spend quality time with  Frank Wilson. I guess Wilson is feeding all this shit to Sonny Shipp?

Wasn’t Wilson the dude accused of sexual harassment by a former LSU employee last year and LSU just told the lady to kick rocks?

Wardell Mack also apparently has a brother who was posting stuff on LSU’s on3 site saying Wardell was still visiting Florida today.

Gerry Hamilton: Sarkisian winning big in DFW on recruiting trail

Quote

Steve Sarkisian knew when he was hired at Texas that the Longhorns ability to recruit in the DFW area was paramount. The reasons were simple. The DFW area has become one of the deepest talent hotbeds in the country, along with long standing Dade/Broward Counties in Florida, and the greater Atlanta area. And the Longhorns were absolutely dismal in DFW under Tom Herman.

In Tom Herman’s first three classes at Texas (2017-19), the Longhorns signed 72 prospects. Only six were from the DFW area. None of the six made an impact at Texas. Herman’s final class in 2020 saw a slight uptick with six prospects from the DFW area out of 21 signees. That class has produced Jaylan Ford and Jake Majors. Andrej Karic impacted winning, but transferred to Tennessee following the 2022 season. That means Herman’s four classes at Texas netted only two starters, and 12 from DFW out of 93 signees. Of the 12 signees, only two were ranked in the On3 Industry Ranking’s top 100 in the country and six were four stars.

Sarkisian, Jeff Banks and staff have flipped the script since arriving in Austin. The staff kept some key guys in the 2021 class committed led by Ja’Tavion Sanders, and have won a number of huge recruitments in the 2022 and 2023 classes. Twenty seven of 75 prospects in the three classes Sarkisian and staff have signed are from the DFW area. That includes four 5-star’s, and 12 4-star’s.

In the 2024 class, there are four commitments from DFW. And the Longhorns remain in the hunt for 5-star EDGE Colin Simmons and 4-star EDGE Zina Umeozulu. Inside Texas takes a look at the Longhorns resounding success in the most talented area in the Lone Star State.

Blake Alderman (Florida / Swamp247), on Mack.

Spoiler

Blake Alderman (Florida / Swamp247), on Mack.

- Florida's lone uncommitted 2024 target in town on Saturday for their 'Grill in the Ville' cookout was Marrero (LA) John Ehret four-star cornerback Wardell Mack. The feeling coming out of his visit to Florida on Saturday was the Gators made a big impression on him. Mack has been saying he ideally wants to make a decision around August/September range. He's already taken official visits in June to Florida State, Florida, and Texas. In-state LSU has been involved in his recruitment as well, and were the perceived leader early on in the process. LSU currently has a deep defensive back class, and we hear that is something that is making the Tigers pursuit of Mack going forward an uphill climb. Florida has been seen as a constant in this recruitment, but there are different people who see Florida's competition as different schools depending who you talk to. Some feel Texas is a big player, one contact felt the Tigers will weren't a team to sleep on, and another contact we spoke with on Saturday was Florida State. Each of Mack's finalists have ties to the state of Louisiana. This seems to be an interesting recruitment to follow at this time as different contacts feel different teams are competition. Mack arrived in Gainesville on Friday night, and should be staying overnight in Gainesville on Saturday. Florida would take Mack, as Billy Napier likes his game and versatility in the secondary. It was big for the Gators to get what could be his last visit before the 'Dead Period' and last trip if he sticks to an August decision timeline.

Saban hasn’t been around long enough to see his systemic bag advantages porked by legal NIL. I bet he gets real tired of this shit in general these days.

I wonder if Lowder is cutting the checks now that freeze is there. Auburn punching well above their expected NIL weight.

Sunday recruiting nuggets from Texas A&M's pool party

Sunday recruiting nuggets from Texas A&M's pool party

Andrew Hattersley

Texas A&M welcomed many of their top targets back to town for their end-of-summer pool party on Saturday afternoon.

For several players it marked a return trip to College Station and a chance to spend some more time around the coaching staff, commits in the class and players on the team. For some others, it was their first trip and A&M left a strong impression with multiple as well.

GigEm247 has a few notes from the event.

-Five-star athlete Terry Bussey and five-star Ryan Wingo were among a couple of players that actually arrived in College Station on Friday and stayed through Saturday. A source close to both players said the engagement by the staff during the weekend was top tier while also praising the environment and organization surrounding the event. Now when it comes to Wingo, getting him back on campus was big as A&M battles Texas, Tennessee, in-state Missouri and others for the nation’s No. 7 receiver and No. 2 receiver in the Top247 rankings. A&M still has an official visit left to use and will certainly be pushing to get Wingo back on campus later this fall again.

As for Bussey, he continues to keep things close to the vest, but A&M entered the weekend in strong standing and exit it still well positioned when it does come time for him to announce a decision.

-Switching gears to five-star Waco Connally cornerback Kobe Black, A&M had the chance to make a big move this weekend getting him back on campus and it sounds like A&M left a strong impression overall. He too had plenty of facetime with the staff and a source close to him said the staff was in sync throughout the visit and came across as very knowledgeable while adding it was a good trip overall. A&M is battling some stiff competition in Texas, Alabama, Ohio State and Oklahoma but continue to make good strides in this recruitment.

-Texas A&M received a pleasant surprise on Saturday when four-star Allen edge rusher Zina Umeozulu arrived in town for the A&M pool party. He was originally expected to be at Oklahoma this weekend so the fact he chose to head over to A&M speaks to his continued interest in the Aggies. It is admittedly hard to get a good read on this recruitment as information is kept pretty close to the vest but no doubt a good development to get him back on campus.

So nothing from the players, just unnamed sources on the aggy coaching staff patting themselves on the back for how well they did. But no talk of how their NIL possibilities presentation went.  It’s always the staff that makes kids choose them, and always money that makes kids choose elsewhere.

Sonny Shipp (LSU 247), on Simmons & Co.

Spoiler

Sunday Recruiting Nuggets

Sonny Shipp

With another dead period in recruiting going into effect on Aug. 1, the LSU staff hosted a few holdovers from Friday’s Bayou Splash.

Colin Simmons, Caden Durham and Dakorien Moore spent part of Saturday with LSU commits Ahmad Breaux and Tylen Singleton and got some more time with the staff.

Durham headed back to Duncanville early on Sunday, while Simmons and his family were departing in the afternoon after more time with Frank Wilson, Matt House, John Jancek and co.

The hot news to come from Saturday was Durham saying he was pushing up his commitment date that he previously set for Aug. 25. He and his camp are keeping a tight lid on the details, but I don’t think fans will have to wait long.

A lot of credit goes to Frank Wilson for how successful the weekend appears to have gone with both Duncanville guys with big assists from Sherman Wilson and JR Belton.

The same goes for Simmons when it comes to fans having to wait. The aforementioned crew was part of an all-hands on deck approach to making this weekend all about family. The 5-star EDGE had already gotten the recruiting spills and seen everything there was to see from his previous multiple trips, so this was all about chilling with the coaches and players to show that family side once more.

I said going in that this weekend was all about closing those deals, and I think fans see the rewards in the not so distant future.

*** Ory Williams is set to announce his decision today at 5 p.m. and LSU is in a good spot to land the 6-6, 320-pounder.

*** Ole Miss commit Joseph Cryer spent Friday evening and Saturday in Oxford after a couple of days in Baton Rouge for the Splash. He has some family ties to the Rebel program, but I think the LSU offer will be too good to pass up and he also joins Brad Davis’s room.

Cryer told our Ole Miss site he and his family would talk everything over and I don’t think you see things dragged out.

*** Jelani Watkins made it to College Station on Saturday and meets with the A&M coaches early today. I’ll dig into where things stand with him and the Aggies and get back to you.

Blake Ivy, Weston Davis and Kobe Black were three more priority targets for LSU in College Station.

*** When Xavier Atkins flips to A&M, keep an eye on Georgia LB Devin Smith. Matt House loves his game and has been following him closely the last couple of months.

*** Cortez Hankton made a nice move with 5-star 2025 WR Dakorien Moore. I had the Tigers towards the middle to the latter part of his top tier going in, but LSU is now a lot closer to the top. He and Jacorey Watson are two very good receivers out of Texas LSU is sitting in a good spot for in the next class.

*** July should end with a big bang, but the fireworks will continue into August, giving Tiger fans a lot to look forward to, in addition to the 2023 campaign.

*** We’ll be posting more reaction pieces from guys we talk to so check the board for more throughout the day.

The idea is that bags alone can’t compete with actual NIL money. And why would someone continue to give for under the table when above the table is legal and has marketing/tax/whatever implications?

then again, this is auburn.

Some of it may be, but where Bobby Lowder goes, stench follows.  I bet Freeze spent as much if not more time with him before taking the job than with the AD and school president.

Bobby Lowder's net worth is in the 7 figures and bags are for all intensive purposes leagal. Otherwise, carry on.
