You cant think like that. You still have to bring in 3-5 every year. Texas cant go back to the days, where they can not field a 2 deep of scholarship OL for the spring game. Not saying take jags, but you still need to hit the numbers.

What are you talking about? One OL in a class works out great as long as he's an exceptional talent like Terrell Cuney

Does the staff not like the Duncanville Safety, Dotson?  Rubell is being recruited as the NB for this class.  Bridges and Gipson at CB.  Is Black a CB or S?

Black is a pure CB.

Bridges is mostly a boundary CB, could be S.
Gipson is a Field Safety/CB.
JJR is a Nickel, Boundary CB

I think this is mostly wishful thinking out of BCS because Sark and Co. slow played Bussey because they wanted to evaluate him further, while aggy offered right off the bat.

I’d be down for a classic meltdown if they have convinced themselves he’s a lock.

Pinocchio.  He thinks Simmons is being dishonest, disingenuous or full of shit is my guess.

Stampede: Previewing Next Week's OVs

Spoiler

The most consequential part of the recruiting calendar is upon us. During the final two weekends of June, the Texas Longhorns staff will host over 30 blue-chip 2024 recruiting targets on official visits.

That starts this upcoming weekend as three five-stars and over a dozen four-star prospects will make their way to Austin for a massive official visit weekend. We'll have the lead-up to the visit weekend covered extensively as more prospects confirm their attendance and as always a few opt against making the trip to Austin.

In this week’s edition of The Stampede, Horns247’s weekly gathering of recruiting intel, the Horns247 recruiting staff of Hudson Standish, Hank South, and Jordan Scruggs break down the recruitments of the confirmed official visitors for the upcoming weekend.

Ryan Wingo, WR, St. Louis (MO) University

The five-star wide receiver will be the highest-ranked player on campus this weekend with the Missouri native checking in at No. 7 in the country according to 247Sports. Sources close to Wingo have maintained that Georgia is the team to beat, but Texas has always had a great selling point with Steve Sarkisian’s offense and Chris Jackson’s NFL background. We’re not counting out Texas in this massive recruitment. (Hudson)

Jordan Ross, EDGE, Birmingham (AL) Vestavia Hills

Texas may have an opportunity to generate some buzz with the nation’s No. 2-ranked pass rusher, per 247Sports. The Crimson Tide isn’t viewed as a main contender for Ross right now, and sources close to the situation feel Auburn isn’t as much of a factor either with the staff changes this past offseason. That means Ross is more than likely leaving the state, at least at this point in his recruitment. The main players right now are Georgia, which hosted him this past weekend, Tennessee, and Florida. With Texas’ need at the position this cycle, Sark and Co. have a unique opportunity to showcase the program and city this weekend. Hey, it worked for one elite Alabama recruit recently. (Hank)

(Photo: Shotgun Spratling | USCfootball.com, 247Sports)
Brandon Baker, OT, Santa Ana (CA) Mater Dei

Five-star offensive tackle Brandon Baker is the highest-ranked target on the offensive line for the Longhorns in the 2024 recruiting cycle. Texas has remained in the thick of Baker’s recruitment with the likes of Ohio State, Georgia, and Oregon. The Buckeyes seemed to crush this past weekend’s official visit, so now Texas will get an opportunity to match. While the Ducks don’t have an official visit scheduled yet, many believe they are the leaders as we get closer to a potential decision likely in August. (Hudson)

Blake Ivy, OL, League City (TX) Clear Springs

Ivy is a major priority for Texas, Texas A&M, and LSU but the unassuming offensive lineman from the greater Houston area is flying a bit under the radar due to his reserved demeanor. Make no mistake that this is one of the biggest in-state battles in the 2024 recruiting cycle.

(Hudson)

Aeryn Hampton, ATH, Daingerfield (TX)

It will be Alabama or Texas for the Top247 prospect come July 4. The Longhorns will get the last crack at Hampton this weekend after he returned to Tuscaloosa this past weekend for an official visit. There seems to be at least some confidence on the Crimson Tide end coming off the 48-hour stay, but that’s been the story for the last few months, especially since he decommitted from UT late last fall. Also keep in mind, kids are riding visit highs, so sometimes it’s best to let the dust settle. You can expect Texas to put its best foot forward this upcoming weekend to get Hampton back in the fold (Hank)

(Photo: Cody Nagel, 247Sports)
Danny Okoye, EDGE, Tulsa (OK) NOAH Homeschool

Texas is treating Okoye as a tier-one priority and has a legitimate chance to steal one of the best prospects from the state of Oklahoma. Okoye only has one official visit scheduled so far (to Texas), and there isn’t a ton of buzz on any other schools besides the Longhorns and Red River rivals Oklahoma. (Hudson)

Freddie Dubose, WR, Spring Branch (TX) Smithson Valley

After tearing his ACL in the first game of the 2022 football season, Top247 wideout Freddie Dubose attacked his rehab and recovery and ended up qualifying for state in track and field at only a self-assessed 75%. Tennessee made a serious move after an official visit to Knoxville, but if Texas goes all out for the local product I’d expect them to win out when he decides on August 25th. (Hudson)

Joseph Stone, WR, Fairburn (GA) Langston Hughes - LSU COMMIT

“JoJo” Stone will be making his return to Austin this weekend after visiting earlier this spring. An LSU commit, sources have maintained that despite his pledge, Stone is taking things “day by day” when it comes to recruiting. That’s evident in that he visited Louisville over the weekend, UCF earlier this month, and several unofficial visits this spring. Stone, a Peach State native, has already made the decision to leave the state once with his pledge, so the going away from home barrier has already been crossed. Texas’ future home in the SEC could play a big role here in the pitch to Stone, who wants to play in the conference, we’re told. There’s been no indication he’s on the verge of flipping, but two visits in two months is at the very least positive momentum for the Longhorns. (Hank)

Christian Clark (Photo: Blair Angulo, 247Sports)
Christian Clark, RB, Phoenix (AZ) Mountain Pointe

Clark has taken official visits to USC, Florida State, and Oregon before this upcoming weekend’s Texas official visit. Sources on the Texas side have remained confident that Tashard Choice will land both of his preferred backs of Clark and IMG Academy’s Jerrick Gibson. Georgia was viewed as the biggest competition for Clark, but after flipping Chauncey Bowens from Florida, trending for Mater Dei running back Nate Frazier, and holding a commitment from Dwight Phillips Jr. I don’t think UGA is a realistic destination for Clark anymore. (Hudson)

Santana Wilson, CB, Scottsdale (AZ) Desert Mountain

Arizona State, Washington, and Texas are the three schools with scheduled official visits for the composite four-star cornerback. There has been strong feedback from this past weekend’s ASU official visit, but sources are optimistic about the Longhorns' chances if they go all out for Wilson. (Hudson)

D'antre Robinson, DL, Orlando (FL) Jones

Robinson was extremely vocal about how much he enjoyed his January unofficial visit to Texas and will now return to the Forty Acres on an OV. Florida and Georgia are likely ahead of Texas heading into this visit but the recruiting pitch of early playing time could tilt the scales in favor of the Longhorns. (Hudson)

Myles Davis, S, Converse (TX) Judson

For some time Horns247 has been reporting Davis’ recruitment has been led by Texas and Texas A&M, and while we still like where the Longhorns and Aggies sit, it is important to mention that USC has also joined the two in-state schools in the top group for the big-bodied safety after Davis took an official visit to Los Angeles in May. With a decision date set for late August, this one has the feeling of an old school Texas vs Texas A&M battle as the Aggies will get Davis’ last official visit the June 23-25 weekend. (Jordan)

(Photo: Collin Kennedy, 247Sports)
Elija Lofton, TE, Las Vegas (NV) Bishop Gorman

We’re still gathering information from Lofton’s Miami official visit this weekend but if the four-star makes it on campus for his Texas OV, the Longhorns should have a legitimate shot of winning this battle. Last week Horns247 reported that the feelings from sources at Miami and Texas were that Texas was a genuine threat to overtake the Hurricanes for the longtime Miami lean. We should have an update here soon. (Hudson)

Eli Bowen, DB, Denton (TX) Guyer

Bowen’s older brother Peyton concluded one of the nation’s most intriguing recruitments last cycle by committing to Oklahoma, but sources around Eli insist that he’s not a lock to follow in his brother’s footsteps. While Eli Bowen doesn’t have the same size as his brother, he recorded the fastest L-Drill time in the country at Under Armour Dallas with a laser 6.67 and is extremely productive for the Guyer Wildcats. (Hudson)

Melvin Hills, DL, Lafayette (LA) Christian Academy

This seems to be one of the more straightforward recruitments for Texas in the 2024 cycle. If Bo Davis & Co. push for the LCA standout, sources at Texas and at LCA believe that they’ll land the three-star. If Texas doesn’t go all out for Hills’ pledge, the 6-foot-3, 270-pounder likely ends up at Ole Miss. (Hudson)

Joshua Lair, S, Fort Bend (TX) Marshall

Baylor, LSU, Texas, and Washington have long been the favorites for the Missouri City native, and it’s those four schools that round out his official visit schedule for June. With Lair’s decision set for the first week of August, Horns247 has a similar feel on this recruitment that we do for Hills’ recruitment. If Texas pushes for a commitment, they’ll win out. (Jordan)

(Photo: Greg Biggins, 247Sports)
Eugene Brooks, IOL, Chatsworth (CA) Sierra Canyon

With a decision set for sometime during the month of July, Texas is in a sneaky good spot Brooks ahead of this weekend’s official visit. Brooks could also set an official visit to either USC or Georgia at the end of June according to 247Sports National Recruiting Analyst Greg Biggins. (Hudson)

Jordan Washington, TE, Houston (TX) Langham Creek

Texas did a tremendous job keeping Washington warm throughout the spring before pulling the trigger on an offer and taking a commanding lead in this recruitment. One source in Houston believes that Texas has a clear lead heading into this official visit with a chance to shut it down. (Hudson)

Khmori House, LB, Bellflower (CA) St. John Bosco

As I reported last week it’s notable that Texas canceled the official visit for DMV off-ball backer Montay Weedon, but still decided to host House on an OV this upcoming weekend. The feeling I get after talking with sources is that House is behind some other options on the 2024 linebacker board, but if the Longhorns decide to push for a commitment they would be the favorite (Jordan)

Deshawn Warner, EDGE, Goodyear (AZ) Desert Edge

Oregon State and Washington are both serious threats for the edge rusher from the state of Arizona. Warner is a bit further down the EDGE board for UT, so similar to House the defensive staff will look to utilize this official visit to keep Warner warm in case they need to push for a commitment later on after missing on edge rushers higher up the board. (Jordan)

Michael Kern, P, Fort Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas

The No. 1 punter in the nation according to 247Sports committed to the Longhorns in early May and will join the first big official visit weekend of June. (Hudson)

Appreciate Hudson getting all the credit for the 10 words on the punter coming

Bobby Burton: No news is good news for Texas after targets officially visited other schools

Quote

Knock on wood. No player Texas was hoping to bring in for an official visit this upcoming weekend committed to another school during or following their official visit elsewhere this past weekend. That means the Longhorns’ staff and their entire approach to recruiting for one of the two big weekend’s of the year remains fully intact. Typically, a couple of major prospects peel off by now. And that may still be the case (like I said, knock on wood). But at least for now, recruiting looks like open season, just the way the Horns had hoped.

**

Be on the lookout for some news on Ryner Swanson, the blue chip Laguna Beach, Calif. tight end who visited Texas last weekend. Swanson has accelerated his recruiting timeline. He visited Oregon over the weekend and now heads to BYU early in this week. The Horns, Ducks and Cougars are his top three, and we’ll most likely have an answer within the next 2-3 weeks from Swanson, if not sooner.

**

I know it’s not major news to some folks, but seeing so many top-ranked young players on campus over the weekend is heartening. It’s the sign of a healthy program. One of the goals for Steve Sarkisian and a program like Texas is not to just win one year, but set yourself up for long-term, repeatable success. The number and quality of young players on campus over the weekend is testament to that goal.

**

I’ve seen stellar pitching performances before but Stanford’s Quinn Mathews was about as impressive as it gets. 156 pitches. 16 Ks. That sounds like an old Nolan Ryan or Steve Carlton stat line.

There's nothing here for Texas to worry about. Most like means he's coming to Texas and flipping kids from other schools.

If for some reason he commits elsewhere, there's nobody from Texas to flip since we only have 3 commits - a kicker, a QB that's not gonna flip, and a guy we've seemingly already processed.

Chuckles and Fuckface would be a great name for a show on adult swim.

I don't really know what to think on Simmons. LSU certainly has to feel good, and if they can get these highly ranked guys to push decisions into November/December then having them be the only OV during the season could really set up well for them. It wouldn't surprise me to see us pick up momentum if we start ripping off a string of wins during the season, but I still don't trust PK to close out on elite prospects. He is a great developer, and a great DC, but not a guy we want to send in to try and close against Mike the Tiger.

I feel the same way, but Simmons has always been leaning LSUs way.. Maybe PK can pull a shocker by grabbing the elite DE out of Bama who is visiting this week?
